if you are looking for no frills but very well executed fried seafood this is the place for you.
clam strip rolls and fried shrimp rolls and fried fish sandwiches are great tasting and don't break the bank like their hot buttered lobster roll, however, if you're in the mood and in the money, it is delicious and worth it.
service is at the counter where staff is always friendly and helpful.
it's also BYOB, which is nice.
all you can eat fried scod on wednesday nights for a tenner. -

Lenny & Joe's is a Ct institution...and this year, my kids learned why. Despite the fact that L&J's attracts a crowd where the average age is upwards of 60, my family of four had a great meal. My lobster role and coleslaw were outstanding. My 11-year-old ordered salmon and even though he polished off the whole thing, I stole a bite and it was moist, fresh and flavorful. I was also pleasantly surprised that L&J's served Sam Adams. Nice lunch all the way around!

My husband grew up in Guilford, and every time we are back in town we absolutely HAVE to get our Lenny & Joe's fix. The clam chowder is the best I've every had - so light a flavorful, and the lobster roll is utter perfection - a huge amount of sweet buttery lobster on a delicious buttery roll... loves it. The steamers are also great, especially in the summer. If you're in the mood for fried seafood, you can't go wrong w/the fried clam or shrimp platters. The ice cream stand in the summer is also really awesome. This one is a favorite of the entire family!

The food was pretty tasty but I would suggest ordering the single portions and NOT the doubles. I should have known better since everything that I order was deep fried. It was just too much food (not that I'm complaining!). I think next time, if somehow I end up back here again (since i'm about 2 hours away by car), it would be a wiser and healthier choice to try some of the non-fried items.
I tried the clam chowder. It was more on the brothy side but I'm guessing that's the style? It was still pretty good. The raw clams on the half shell were sweet and fresh. The deep fried oysters came in a big heap (single order next time!) The fried seafood platter was good but I thought the fried scrod was not as good as the fried tilapia that my friend ordered. The fried shrimp and scallops were good and the fried whole clams is recommended over the clam strips. -

Family style restaurant serving seafood, burgers and ice-cream. It's a hodge podge of food attracting families and seniors. You're not here for the setting nor ambiance, but come for the freshest seafood.
I've had the best lobster roll ever. The bun was buttered and toasted perfectly containing freshly peeled, warmed lobster chunks. We also shared their New England clam chowder which is different from your typical Boston clam chowder. The chowder had a clear broth with a touch of milk and plenty of clams. It tasted a littly gritty as you can almost taste the sand from the clams. We also shared a fresh scrod (cod) fish which was broiled accompanied by pilaf and steamed veggies. Fried options were available but figured with the high cholesterol consumed from the lobster roll I would take the healthy route. Highly recommend this place which is in close proximity from the Premium Outlets for a quick bite. -

I have only been here once on the way back from Essex and I must say that I enjoyed the experience. The seafood menu is very expansive and there are many price ranges to choose from. I also liked just ordering and picking up your tray when your number is called as opposed to waiting on a server and tipping. The food was really good and the place always seems to be crowded and lively. If you have kids the carousel in the back is a must.

Absolutely loved the lobster roll. It was honestly one of the best sandwiches I have had in my life.
Huge chunks of lobster stuffed in a buttered bun.
I have had several others but this one reigns supreme. -

I LOVE LENNY & JOES!
I only come here about once a year, but every single I've been, its just heaven. The lobster roll is soft, and warm, and buttery and just pure deliciousness. The coleslaw is awesome, and a side of fries was a nice way to top off the artery clogging feast. I love this place.
Its such a festive, summery place to come. The madness of waiting in line and anticipating your food, and getting soo excited when your number is called--its all part of the charm :) I love love love it.
I love lenny & joe's. (wait, did i say that already...) -

If someone wants to move here because of Lenny and Joe's food, they either a) live under a rock or b) just got out of prison. If you want frozen, mediocre seafood served on a paper plate where the fries are soggy and want to spend $20/head, this is the perfect place for you. This place prints money in the summer and we laugh every time we drive by to go to any other restaurant in the area. Chips in Clinton..better. Log Cabin-Clinton--better. Splash-Guilford--better. Coulda given it one star, but the ice cream and carousel are great for my kids and they like the ambiance, but even the outdoor area is filthy; food, ketchup, ice cream on all the seat/picnic tables. Sucks too because 10 years ago when we first moved down here, it was actually pretty good. I think between the beach, nostalgia, summertime and lack of local-area options forces your mind to think 'hey--this is great'.

Can't figure how this place has stayed around so long. The food and quantities have always sucked! Just met friends here tonight and dropped $17.99 on there daily special, a lobster roll and shrimp bisque and slaw. Thats a special? The bisque had more carrots in it than shrimp and the lobster roll was way over priced for the amount in the roll!

Growing up, this is where I ate fried seafood.
I always order the whole-belly clams, because this is what I have always done.
Much better batter/oil flavor than a certain local competitor across the street.
Cheap t-shirts too. Save you a trip to the mall. -

Stopped here on a Saturday afternoon. We all ordered different varieties of fried seafood. Just didn't find any of it to be particularly good. My clams especially weren't of the quality I had expected.
The accompanying fries and onion rings were lousy. Could scarcely find the onions in the rings.
Coupled with the fact that the prices seem high ($14.99 for a whole clam dinner, which came with those lousy fries and a little cup of cole slaw), I just can't imagine coming back here. It also makes me appreciate Stowe's in West Haven so much more, which is tastier, cheaper, and so much more convenient to New Haven and points south. -

Whats not to love about this place.. Just minutes off 95 on to Route 1, we try to stop here whenever we pass by.. Its just a great little fish restaurant serving some local fish at great prices.. I dont know how many people are familiar with a hot buttered lobster roll but, they are just amazing.. Will put those cold mayo laden lobster salads to shame.. We arrived at the resaurant at 11 am just as the were opening.. What a great breakfast..
Here is the spread: The hot buttery lobster did not disappoint.. Served on a buttered long New England Hot Dog Roll, its a thing of beauty.. Lots of there food is deep fried and done really well.. Scallop rolls, clam rolls, deep fried fish.. All comes out perfectly.. I normally hate the fries and today they were good..The place is always packed but, so early in the morning, they had time to concentrate on the fries..
Just incase anyone is not familiar with the difference between a clam strip and a whole belly clam.. This is a whole belly clam.. Bursting with flavor and the creamy texture of the clam.. I will forever be thankful to Holly Moore for showing me all these great places up here..

Another of my national treasure-Eat here before you die places.
I found this place in a book called the I95 gourmet.
If you ever want to understand what new england seafood is all about..find this place, wait in line and order up a big ole plate of scrod.
I find this the yankee-equivalent of a my favorite tex-mex joints. A one shop, mom and pop place that just serves great american food the way it was meant to be.Listed in: Places to eat before you die

San Jose, CA
HEADLINE: Joe and Lenny why did you franchise the goldmine???? 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3 ... and only because I have decades of fond memories eating here back in the 80's and 90's ... now, not so much.
I'm doing my own DDD's tour of clam shacks, lobster shanties and chowdah dives this week in CT with me Mum as I cannot, CANNOT find similar suitable seafood treasures back in California unless I travel up to San Fran. I guess you'd call it SSD ... (shacks, shanties and dives) ;-))
Joe used to work the ice cream truck business in East Haven.
He used to go to Jimmie's at Savin Rock to contemplate the various eccentricities of New England seafood. Good and bad. Jimmie's grilled their Hummel hot dogs slit down the middle ... point taken.
Jimmie's had fabulous fried whole clams ... point taken.
ALERT: Jimmie's has fallen into categorical disrepair.
BUT, Joe saw the vision .... and he wanted to start a restaurant. Lenny, was tending at a sandwich and beer bar joint across the street from a factory in Syracuse, NY having attended Syracuse University.
He had visions around a beer and sandwich joint.
The two bro's got together and formed a consortium located at Madison across from the Hammonassett State Park and ... later .... out in Westbrook at the old Black Angus.
Joe, in particular was an aficionado of Jimmie's Hummel hot dogs (slit down the middle for grilling) and fried whole belly clams .... he "borrowed" the idea of slitting and grilling dogs down the middle and brought it to the drive-in at Madison.
The rest is history ... it's been a fabulous success with T shirts, a "magical" carousel ... lobster on the cheap, and fried clams and corn on the cob for the masses.
The only problem with the drive-in is that, I believe, Lenny and Joe have franchised this particular location to a loyal manager ... at a distinct disadvantage to their loyal customer base.
The results are now less that expected.
We had a dozen relatives arrive here this Friday evening .... picnic tables abounded out in the back and we sought those out.
I ordered a single side of whole belly clams ($12.99), two sides of slaw (because I knew it was my favorite ... a little under $2.00) and two Hummel Brother's slit dogs (a total of just around $5.00).
Others in my party ordered the clam chowdah, the lobster roll, and other traditional sides.
The Fish Tale's lobster roll, according to those polled, came in a distant THIRD behind the Lobster Landing in Clinton and the O&S Oyster House in Mystic. This would have been 'heresy' a few years ago!!!!!!
I must say the 'dog', something Joe was adamant about in terms of quality, was basically plebeian ... while, indeed, a Hummel Brothers' frank, there is no crisp, no pop, no grilled browning, .... no nothin' ... very disappointing. My hot dog barely showed signs of being anywhere near a grille.
The whole belly fried clams are simply not as good as I remember them to be a decade or two ago. My whole belly clams were tiny versus the massive Ipswich clams I've been accustomed to enjoying here.
Quite honestly, they were just OK ... granted they are universes better than I can find in California ..... but not what I remember this place was capable of dishing out. ... nor is the accompanying tartar sauce out of a push dispenser.
According to my Mum and brothers, the chowdah was just ...... ahhight.
To grant them three stars, I must commend them for the cole slaw which adheres to Lenny and Joe's original recipe .... It is the quintessential example of what a slaw ought to be ....
green cabbage / red cabbage / carrots / mayo / vinegar / celery seed ...
The role model that ALL slaws must be measured. .... SERIOUSLY!!!
BUT ...
The 'Magical' Carousel was simply a source of annoyance out in the back yard, given the shriek bell signal every time it was to start up ...
And the final straw was the arrival of the gnats around dusk ... they chased us off premises.
This place was MUCH, MUCH, better when Lenny and Joe owned and ran this location.
When I lived in Madison and Branford, this was THE PLACE to come to for seafood. The franchising decision, as is almost always the case, has changed the place considerably and not for the better.Listed in: My own DDD through CT ...…

I don't usually do updates, but if I were to do only one, this would be the one.
My fried clams last night were probably the most greasiest most chewiest fried clams I've had in my life. Picture this: the image of a dog chewing and chewing and chewing on a greasy tan rawhide bone. That was me last night.
However I'm not surprised because I've been around long enough to realize that these joints, not only the Fish Tail, are hit or miss. I know the pattern well: your meal will be great during one visit and the same meal will be awful during your next visit.
I'm smart enough to know that the folks working behind the counter aren't culinary institute grads and the clams aren't exactly pulled from Long Island Sound. But by-golly, the formula for good fried clams isn't overly complicated. Three things are needed: fresh clams, good lightly breaded crumbs, and good frying oil. I'm gonna say the guys working the kitchen last night probably struck out on all three.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Jenny F.
I have been eating here since I was a little one. My grandparents were big fans of this place, as are lots of senior citizens from the sheer amount of them in the dining room. My grampa would always buy me the $6 dollar Fishtale t-shirt and it would always be a staple of my childhood summer wardrobe.
The one thing that is really annoying about this place is the ridiculous number of people looking for a seat. As soon as you place your order you have to hang out by a table so that you can grab it once the other diner's leave. This can lead to a not so pleasant dining experience.
On our last trip I ordered the clam strip platter and my husband had the fried scrod. We were lucky enough to have the counter all to ourselves since there were no booths available. My clam strips were not greasy and were served piping hot. I am not a coleslaw person but I like L&J's especially because of the lack of mayo. Fries are eh but at least they have malt vinegar to dip them in.
The food was good as I had not had any fried seafood in a long, long time. On the other hand L&J's is a tourist trap. It's not cheap, the lines are long, and forget trying to drive down route one in the summer months. So that is why it only gets 3 stars.Listed in: CT is not so bad

If you visit the shoreline of CT, this is the MUST GO place. It is an icon of the coast. It is kind of a McDonald's style restaurant, where you order, they make it and you take it to your seat. They get very crowded in the summer!!! But the service is fast, they have a lot of staff members to make it quick.
I get the fish because I am allergic to shellfish, and the fish is always excellent. My cousin gets the clams, and is her absolute favorite. We make it a point to go when we camp down the shore.
They have a carousel and an ice cream parlor outside for kids too! They sell shirts and salt water taffy.Listed in: Family Fun

Seafood platter is the say to go if you want to try everything. Also, everything is fried in soybean oil so it's supposedly good for you :) This place is great in the summer and not as busy in the early spring.

Another joint with so so fried seafood? Well, sorta only a great atmosphere with loads of outdoor seating and bring your own cooler filled with whatever drinks you prefer....my wife and I love to share the clam strips, lobster roll and scallops and wash it down with a fresh bottle of Pinot from home. Food is a little better then average, but the experience and location make it worth the trip!
Ps- the now available broiled seafood menu makes it possible to not bust the diet! -

Lenny & Joes = Beautiful, greasy + foods.
I eat here sometimes when I am tired of the delis on the shoreline and am craving some greasy seafood. I usually have indigestion afterward, but am seldom disappointed, because I expect it.
My family used to come here on weekends when we moved back to the States from Japan. Now it is a place for me to meet up with old friends and reminisce. It is much better than the Dolly, is inexpensive and is close to Hammonasset which is always a plus because you can go fishing/camping afterward! Keep in mind that you will probably need to lie down and take a nap after you eat here;) -

Sweet greasy deliciousness! Golden fried beauties! Oh what I would give for a Lobster Roll!
Having moved to landlocked Colorado a year ago from the jolly New England, one thing I do miss. On a whim seafood. Out here your ingestion of the fishy variety is a calculated maneuver but back East you could guess whether or not it would be a good bet. Which brings me to Lenny and Joe's (half-fast) Fish Tale. Get some french fries, get a lobster roll, and have a birch beer. Sit outside and enjoy the hoards of traffic going down route one or take it to go for an impromptu dinner on the beach at Hammonasset. -

If you're going to travel over an hour to Long Island for fried clams you should consider going to L&J's instead. I grabbed a late lunch at L&J after I was done shopping at Whiteflower farms in Litchfield, CT. I ordered a big belly fried clam platter with onion rings, a hot lobster roll, and a clam chowder to go.
The clams are very good. The coating is a bit heavy but is lightly fried. The clams are big, juicy and have that crunchy skin texture on the outside and soft texture in. Some of them taste like they're soaked in to much freshwater but otherwise they have a subtle brine finish. The onion rings are a bit of a paradox. The breading is a little thick for my taste but the onions are naturally sweet and crispy. The clam chowder is a simple clam broth mixed with chopped whole bellies, potatoes and milk. Very effective and very delicious. The hot lobster roll is also simple. A wonder bread hot dog bun and lobster meat, pan fried in a ton of butter. If there's anything I like it's bread and seafood pan fried in a ton of butter. The bun is crispy brown on the outside and moist on the in, the lobster is amazingly not greasy and holds its taste and texture.
Coleslaw and tartar sauce is a little above standard. They both go well with the clams. None is needed for the lobster roll.
I should point out that the fried fish filet is very popular and looks divine. I can usually tell how some thing will taste by their appearance. The fish is perfectly brown on the outside and has a nice aroma.
The staff is extraordinarily friendly and helpful, and the restaurant very clean.
Lenny and Joe's fried seafood ,while not beating the Clam Shack in Kennebunk, Maine, certainly beats anything you can buy in New York City and Long Island. It's worth the trip. -
Review from Mike D.
New York, NY
Lenny and Joe's has been doing fried and fresh seafood the right way since I was a toddler. They do seafood in a fine New England fashion - from the huge boiled lobsters with potato and corn on the cob that my parents love to the foot long hot dogs and lemonade enjoyed by my brother to the perfectly buttered lobster roll enjoyed by all. But the true highlight is the fried seafood menu - from the fried whole clams to the fried juicy shrimp to the best dish on the menu - the fried whole soft shell crab. Simply put, Lenny and Joe's is a Connecticut shoreline treasure and Madison's finest food. To top it all off, the spacious outside yard has plentiful benches and a BYO policy, an excellent treat for an enjoyable summer evening with the family

This is, indeed, an icon.. a classic roadie stop on Boston Post Road. Great fun for kids and bikers alike. There is ample seating both inside and out, plenty of room for intense summer traffic. A carousel and ice cream stand are also open in the summers to help please the crowds. Let's face it, people love this place.
I really wanted to like this place, simply based on all the great reviews I read. The food, however, left us running in more ways than one. First, the prices are higher than average. You're paying top prices for fast food counter service? Fogetaboutit.
We sampled the fried fish, tartar sauce, fries, and clam chowder. This is the worst chowder I've ever had. Watery, bland and tasteless. The potatoes in the chowder were undercooked.. and the whole thing wasn't seasoned properly. We regret getting the pint - should have just shared a cup and tossed the rest. The fries were undercooked as well. The tartar sauce was good, however I really doubt it was house-made.
Finally, the fish - it was the best part of our horrid meal. Fried to perfection, perhaps.. It looked great, inside and out. But the taste was off. I've had good scrod.. crave it sometimes. I don't know what they did (or didn't do), but it just didn't taste right. Still, I looked forward to finishing it just to wash the chowder flavors out of my mouth.
Would I go back? I seriously doubt it. Not only because I hate fighting the crowds but also because they just didn't have anything to offer in the way of tasty foods. IF I did go back, I think I'd stick to the rolls and lobster. Forget the rest of the menu.. Rolls and lobster only and maybe I'll write an update.
I really wanted to love you, Lenny & Joe.. but you failed me. -

I came here on a recommendation from a couple of friends since I'm from out of town. Nothing fancy, and priced just right for the quality of food. Lenny and Joe's got the job done. Fresh, fried seafood, fast.
Ample parking and plenty of seating inside and outside. You place your order from the counter, and my order came in about 10 minutes. The staff behind the counter were very friendly.
I got the whole fried clam roll with a side of krinkle cut fries. The whole clams were fried perfectly. Not chewy or greasy, and very flavorful. They were piled on a toasted hotdog bun, and they weren't skimpy with the portion of clams either. The coleslaw that it came with on the side was somewhat bland and unimpressive, but I didn't come here for that. Besides, I was too full to finish it anyways. And now to the french fries. To be honest, I think the fries were among the best I've ever had. Period. Again, nothing fancy. Cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of crisp and starch.
Overall, I'm impressed. I gave it five stars because it was relatively cheap, fast, and delicious. I'll definitely be returning for more fries and to try their soft shell crab roll.
[update]
I had a chance to go back a couple of weeks ago. This time was almost better than the first. I went for dinner this time, and the place was packed! We had to get picnic bench seating outside, and despite the mosquitos, it was still a great dining experience. I got to order the soft shell crab roll, and it was amazing. Breaded and seasoned perfectly, it just melts in your mouth. Pair that with a nice BYOB cold brew, and I was in heaven. -

I grew up in a small new england town that had as many as 3 dairy bars open in the summer, where you could head for a plate of fried goodness and a creamy - and have been astonished that New Haven doesn't have anything like this. Thankfully, a couple years ago I found Lenny & Joes.
This isn't fancy, and it's a little more expensive than I'd like (about $30 for 2 ppl, which isn't crazy - but we're talking about fried clam strips on a paper plate) - but sometimes you just really crave fried seafood, and this place delivers.
And as you head out, grab a box of salt water taffy - it's pretty tasty. -

I can't remember what I have eaten at Lenny's & Joe's - I'm pretty sure it was probably fried and came with french fries. Oops. The lines to order are always a little crazy, but the food seems to come out really fast. Someone in your party usually scores a table while the rest of you wait for your number to be called. This is laidback, summery, t-shirt and flip flop shore town dining at its finest. Friends of ours always bring a pretty tablecloth, fun plates, and some nice things to set one of the picnic tables outside. The best was the time a woman headed straight toward the decked out table ready to throw down her plates of food, yelling out, "HONEY, LET'S SIT HERE, THIS IS A NICE ONE!"

Stopped here spur of the moment on a Sunday afternoon. The place was packed and we had to wait, but that was OK. We sat in a back corner and had lobster rolls and french fries. It was delicious and perfect for what we wanted. The place was busy and noise, but it was what we expected. Would love to go back!

I don't know why this place doesn't have more stars. They are awesome. It's been around for a long time and the food is always GREAT. I'm only giving it 4 stars because it's a tourist trap. It's always full of tourist, so you may want to go off season if you are a local. We usually avoid it until August, when the vacationers start to leave.
Lenny & Joes = the greasy fried fish and chips, shrimp that you love when in New England and the baked fish and salad if you are watching your weight. Everything is good. If you go, plan on waiting in the tiny waiting area or outside, because this place is always crowded! -

I've eating here a zillion times. It's an icon, a seacoast treasure, a place where people from other states, damn even other planets will come to eat. But what is actually so special about it. I don't know?? The food is certainly good, but I've had better. The decor is nothing to get excited about, it fact it;s actually pretty crummy. Most of the time it's crowded as hell and sometimes hard to find a table. Why do people love it. I don't know. I wanted to be objective in this review and give it what it really deserves. But all I have to do is think of Lenny & Joe's and I smile. I have had so many great times and memories here. How can I give it anything less than 5 stars.

New York, NY
Downhill alert--I've had a number of lobster rolls here over the years and the portions get mingier each year.
My last time, which will be my last time, not only was the portion of lobster meat tinier than before, the pieces were tinier, too. I had way too many overcooked bits of lobster (the thin, antenna-like strands at the end of the claw) and too few chunks of meat.
Also it did not taste 'fresh'. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't spoiled, it just tasted like it had been in the refrigerator too long before being rewarmed and had picked up those off-odors. -

I love Lenny & Joe's. My only complaint is that I don't live closer. My favorite is the fried shrimp, crispy and cooked to perfection. Lobster rolls are always fresh. They're made with butter, not mayo, and served hot. This is what a lobster roll should taste like. The souvenir items are cute and inexpensive, and it's fun to shop while waiting for your food.
