Update April 30, 2008---I loved this place so much I returned a week and a half later.  Had a delightful tea with one of my favorite Yelpers!

Warning....the Devonshire Cream is so heavenly.  I'm sure each 1/4 tsp has a million calories!

Original review:

Delightful!  Charming! Too much fun!  I want to move in to Leland!

Four of us gals had the loveliest afternoon teas recently.

When we walked in the friendly staff asked us if it was our first visit.
They explained to us that we could choose our tea. There were several tiers of tea. All were in containers that you could sniff.  There were easily 30-40 kinds if tea (black teas, green teas, organic, herbal and more)  The staff happily answered all our questions

While we were thinking Mama Carmen gave us a plate of yummy Madelines.

We shared two Tea for Two tiered platters:

Each platter included:

4 half sandwiches
Fruit salad
Green Salad
Two scones
Two shortbread cookies
Two Madeline cookies

Plus we each got a pot of tea of our choice!

The tea for two id $21.95--a bargain. We were stuffed!

Curtis, the co-owner was very sweet.  When we complimented him on the decor he proudly described how he and his family and friends designed the place using inexpensive items from Urban Ore and Home Depot.  The result---classy Art Deco with the homiest of touches.

Even the bathroom is wonderful..see my pix!

There is a colorful compass design on the floor as you walk in..  It is actually a decoupage from magazines.  It is beautiful!  A customer thought it was made of gold leaf!!

I'll definitely return!  And soon!

P.S.
Reservations recommended on the weekends.

You can just get a pot of tea.  No need to pig out like I did  8)

I think what I love most is that Leland isn't  pompous or more serious.
I don't even have to get dressed up or wear white gloves...not that I own anything remotely high brow anyway..... 8)

I really like this place for personalized gifts for friends! You can get great, high quality loose leaf tea with names like Brooklyn Serenity etc. They encourage blending and then make labels that can say anything you want on them. They guys there are super nice and the place is so cozy. I have not eaten here but I will soon!

Cute concept, and so adorable inside. The owner is super nice. So sweet, great tea selection, the food is tasty and light. Only comment - the scones could use more chocolate chips! =)

I really loved this place and I can't say enough good things about it.  I met some girls here for brunch this weekend and everything was so cute and wonderful.  We were served freshly homemade scones and jelly (the chocolate scone was great), cute sandwiches with the crust cut off that were garnished with thinly sliced cucumbers, and fresh salads.  The owner was a really nice guy and came over to check on our table and make sure our group was taken care of.  They also  had a great selection of loose teas that all smelled wonderful!  I'm not sure how I made it out of there without buying any, but I did.  And the overall atmosphere of the place was just warm, inviting, relaxing -- not to mention the music playing overhead included some soulful blues by Big Mama Thorton which I absolutely loved.  Definitely one of my new favorite places in SF.

Steve is really nice and has the most nurturing personality. He loves to commisserate and feed people, and I'm so glad people like him are operating businesses in the neighborhood -- he is really a great addition to any community.

But on to the tea and delicious crumpets and other baked goods. In case you hadn't heard, there is a big difference between a lowfat scone and one baked with cream. And although you may think you aren't interested in a chocolate chip scone for whatever trivial reason, well, don't miss out. Wow. I'm glad the scones are small so I can eat about three.

One day I went in and asked for some lapsang souchong tea to create smoked flavor for ribs. He set me up with some amazing brew. I wish I could get in for tea more often.

Support Leland's!

I worked here one day when I wasn't going to the office and my apartment just smelled too awful (don't ask). It's super-laid back, has outlets for your laptop, free wi-fi. The guy at the counter explained the tea options so I got just what I wanted. He checked back often, but not too frequently, to make sure everything was okay. Lovely presentation for the tea, sandwiches, salad, and desert. The aroma of delicious baked goods tempted me the entire time. And no one pressured me to pay till I was ready to leave. So mature it hurts. Visit the bathroom for an extra plus. It's so clean and, if memory serves, spacious.

Will has been a great family friend for over a year now. He has made most of us our own special blends, and knows all of us by name. amazing for someone who works so hard and is so busy. he is a delight and did a great job on the place. oh, and his mother, carmen, is  the best! she is so sweet, so puerto rican. together they make a great atmosphere, and the help is really something. the prices are agreeable and there is always a little something extra if  you're nice. i plan on coming back and as often as i can. this is my favorite tea spot in the cuity. hope to see you there!!

Sooo cute!  I stopped for a bite to eat on my way to class and I'm sitting here Yelping about this place (RIGHT NOW with free WiFi) as I enjoy my tea lunch.  My meal includes a sandwich (with the crust cut off and cut into four triangles), fruit cup, salad, a hot pot of tea, and madeleines!  Perfect!

They have a wonderful selection of teas, tea cakes, and scones and I'm going to have to return over and over again to try them all.

I met several friends here yesterday for a high Easter tea and it was a quite lovely experience.  Their tea selection was vast, thankfully Rosie (who was my Easter date) and I agreed to have the Pear Carmel with our "Tea for Two" tea service.

The tea - and, the rest of our lunch - was delicious.  As was the ambiance of the Leland Tea Company - quiet, not too crowded, out of the way, full of good smells and nice people.

Lovely.

Nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon, even if I did have to leave the Mission to do it. ;P

My favorite tea place in San Francisco. William's passion infuses the tea and the friendly atmosphere. The teas are divine, the soups prepared by his mom are healthy and delish. Very cozy, quiet enough to read or study even when pretty full. I go there to work sometimes and somehow always have some breakthrough moment. Maybe it's the Snow Buds flowering in my synapses. Or the chocolate infused black tea (uh huh, yes, it exists) just gushing goodness and firing off some spark of creativity. An oasis in the otherwise shady Polk St area.

I flipping love this place. I work nearby, and it is my go-to for nice lunches. Will is amazing (he even recognized me one day when he was driving and I was walking, and freaked me out by honking his horn and waving maniacally). He knows his tea, knows his customers, and strives to unite them in the most harmonious combination. He picked out the tea that cured my cold last month ... and his madeleines are to die for. Proust fans, you must come here.

Today will be remembered as containing not one, but two iconic tea experiences. The day started at Samovar, and you can read my review at your leisure. In summation - overpriced, small portions, disappointing service, and did I mention overpriced? Two stars. Never going back.

In dramatic contrast, I'm currently sitting at Leland Tea Company, about to finish up a solid five-star experience. Awesome across the board.

It was fate, really, because when I yelped Samovar this morning a stellar review of Leland was in the right hand corner. I knew I wanted to go somewhere this afternoon to do some work and sip something warm, but coffee wasn't appealing with my health (see ya soon Coffee Bar). Seeing that yelp review combined with the relative ease of getting there via the 49 made Leland the easy choice.

I was impressed from the minute I walked in. There seemed to be 30+ teas to choose from, and you could mix and match to create your own. I was also hungry (thanks to the minimalistic portions at Samovar), and wanted something to eat. That I was able to customize their combination offers to have a cup of soup (homemade chicken dumpling, how could I pass that up?!) and a fruit salad with granola was very cool. Sandwich, salad, soup, fruit - take your pick.

So how was it? Awesome. My tea came in a pot for refills, which made the $7 cup at Samovar look like an overpriced joke. The soup was perfect, and while my fruit and granola was about the same size as what I got at Samovar, that's fine, because it was half the price.

And throughout, the service was beyond exceptional. Will (owner? all around good guy? my personal hero? i think all apply) made sure I was enjoying my meal, and upon learning I was sick, gave me a complimentary glass of his special afternoon brews that would help alleviate my cold. Much appreciated.

I don't know what the bill is yet, but I'm pretty sure it won't be the $18+ ripoff that calls itself Samovar. Plus I felt better every minute. You can't put a price on that. The tea, the service, the free Internet, the vibe, everything - it's my new preferred destination when illness strikes.

Update @ 3:10pm - Will just gave me a Halls throat lozenge. How do I give a sixth star?

Is Leland Tea worth waiting in the rain for the shitty Muni #47, which, when it actually shows up, rolls ever so slowly along what must be the ugliest route in SF, while street hustlers attempt to engage you in a shell game? Yes, it is. Leland is a very inviting sort of place smelling of freshly baked scones and hot pots of tea. The owner makes you feel like a long lost, but recently found, member of the family. There must be thirty varieties of tea from black through herbal and a wide selection of food. I highly recommend the Brie and tomato sandwich, especially in combination with one of the awsome scones. Sit down with your food, a pot of tea, and a good book, and forget how crappy the weather is outside.

When I get a new job, I come here to celebrate with tea.
When I'm laid off, I cuddle a pot of dessert tea and nibble on the awesome fresh scones, and I know that my life is just fine.
When a friend has a rough week, I bring them here, partly so they can distract themselves with tea and sandwiches, and partly to recharge myself, because I'm going to need it to deal with them. ;)

This is certainly a gender-neutral enough place to be comfortable for guys.

also, the salad has a light oil and vinegar dressing, and it's perfect.

Also the owner is awesome. you can see patrons come in and sadface when he's not around.

Have you ever had a butterscotch scone?  Yeah, neither had I till yesterday.  Damn, I didn't know what I had been missing.  When we walked in we asked what that incredible smell was.. it was the fresh baked scones in the oven.  When we got our order (2 each with jam) they were still hot.  And of course, after finishing 2 large scones we went back up for more.  The tea (Irish Breakfast) was the prefect compliment to the scones.  The owner was awesome.  he gave us free shortbread cookies due to some pint size customers causing a ruckess.  That cookie was to die for too.  I think i might just have to become a regular here.

Stumbled upon this place one weekend and finally got to try it for lunch today. Really fantastic little place with an excellent tea selection. I had the turkey & swiss sandwich with some fresh fruit and the house blend tea. It was perfect for such a rainy day in the city. The owner is really sweet and very welcoming. I will definitely go back to try some more of their wonderful tea selections.

What a great find in the city! This place is awesome. I stumbled upon it, only to be blown away by the food, tea and fantastic service. The owner was SO nice and was educating us on all the different teas. He also let us try one as a little 'taste test'. I am VERY picky about places being clean and this place was immaculate! You can tell the food is fresh.

Tip: It can be hard to find because its off the main street (polk) so make sure you don't pas by it.

Tea selection is broad and well selected. I got the tea lunch, including the Pu-er Le Chat something, the roast beef and gorgonzola sandwich, salad, fruit, and the chocolate chip scone. EAT THE SCONE FIRST. warm, flaky, fresh. $13 dollars totally, completely worth the 2 hours I stayed there. would have been 5 if I didn't have contracts class looming over my head.

Worth the uphile trek too, I just need to wear more sensible shoes.

The owner made my sis and I feel at home. He walked us through the varieties of teas. Some of the blends were created onsite by the owner too. The scones and madelines were made fresh that morning and the tomato bisque soup was delicious. If you are looking for a place to enjoy high tea with some girlfriends, this place may be a bit too casual. Although we had a window table and got good service, there was a lot of foot traffic from locals grabbing their morning coffee/tea. Don't expect to see any teddy bears, tea pots/cups or jewelry for sale here.

After a rather disappointing brunch at Brenda's, the SO and I wandered down Polk Street, slowly dragging ourselves back up the hill.  Then we remembered we wanted to try this little tea shop since we are both nuts about tea and coffee.

At first, I was not impressed by the tea selection--HOWEVER--the owner, came up to me and suggested I blend my own tea from what he had available.  Excuse me?  You mean, I can have exactly what I want?  I got the dragon pearl tea, which by the way, is a steal here considering they charge the same for all pots.

After we sat down, I noticed the decor.  How charming, how lovingly, how painstakingly they had renovated the place.

I took a step outside and then the owner came out and we start to chat.  Next time you're there, take a look at the mosaic--made from magazines.  He and his friends handpainted the tables, his mother re-upholstered the chairs, and the trinkets that adorns the place were given to them by people in the neighborhood.

If you're not sold on this place by now, you just have to go there and see for yourself.  Upon entry, the smell of fresh baked scones will hit you in the face (cream cheese frosting!), and the smiles will make you swoon.  Everything here is warm, bright, and sincere.

Just writing this review makes me happy.

I was hoping to really like this place because of the other yelp reviews.  I went last Sunday with a girlfriend.  We drove all the way from the peninsula to check out this place.  The environment was clean and quiet.  The food was good.  We had the tea for two service (with bottomless house tea!).  The gal at the counter was neither friendly nor informative.  I was hoping that she could explain and educate us a little bit about mixing teas or what have you.  Maybe she's having a bad day.  Customer service was not very good.  They forgot our napkins and silverware (how are we to eat our fruits and salad?).  Not once did they come to our table to ask if everything was to our liking, never checked our teapot to see if it needed to be refilled---i actually had to get up and ask!  I mean come on!  The only thing I REALLY enjoyed......my friend's company and our conversation.

What a cute place!  My friends and I had been talking that very morning about Good Places To Get Tea In The City, and this name didn't come up; we happened into it later in the afternoon, and were glad we did.  It has many interesting teas, all of which you can smell beforehand; they pour it in cute cups (which you can buy).  They've got everything from two kinds of pu-erh to a "Kisses" blend (rose hips, black tea, and cacao nibs -- and not even overwhelmingly chocolate-y).  Adorable place; good tea (especially on a rainy afternoon!) -- I'll be back.

Thank you yelp!  This place was well worth the cross city journey.

3 of us got the tea for two (affordable) and the sandwiches, scones, and salad perfectly complimented the tea and the conversation.

The place was cute, quaint, and not over crowded even on a Saturday afternoon at tea time.  I stumbled out of the place 2 hours later with warm cheeks, a full belly, and a pleasant caffeine buzz.  Felt as good as alcohol to me.

I live in So Cal, but discovered Leland Tea via the internet and saw the great reviews.  Well, was in SF for a few days, and checked out Leland Tea.  Very wise choice on my part.  Great staff, great tea, great atmosphere and great scones.  I had a tea lunch for about 10 bucks - includes pot of tea (2 cups worth), sandwich, salad, fruit cup AND a scone.  The owner gave me some VERY generous samples of tea to try (not just an ounce, but a full cup of hot tea and a full glass of ice tea).  The next time I'm in SF, Leland Tea is definitely a place I will visit again.  I can't wait to try more selections of their tea.

That well known line from Cheers - "where everybody knows your name" - always seemed to baffle me a bit.  Perhaps it's because I could hardly believe that any establishment would go beyond mumbling "thank you for your patronage miss (glance at credit card) so-and-so..."  When I went to Leland, that  notion went out the window.

Leland Tea Company is fabulous for the relaxing setting (cushions by the window, paintings on the tables) and fragrant assortment of teas - but it is even more fabulous due to the service.

The owner kindly asked my friends and me if we were enjoying ourselves, and later on gushed to us about the shindig he holds in the joint every few weeks  with homemade cooking and music, can you ask for more?  And every so often our table was graced with a polite and ever-so meticulous youth (there, I said it - I couldn't think of a better synonym) who asked if he could clear away some plates for us.

I went there with some friends to read, relax, and enjoy my Sunday.  It was a great experience to unwind with a pot of fragrant passionfruit tea (delicious, by the way) without getting glares or being hurried along.  Next time I won't take too long on the cushions near the windows - I'll let someone else enjoy it for a bit too!

I was on a quest for donuts when I came upon this gem.  Being a tea enthusiast, I stopped in and was delighted.

Upon walking in, the man behind the counter tried to place my face to see if I'd been there before.  I admitted to being a newbie and he helped recommend some great blends.  The woman who walked in behind me commented on the mini-scones he had made while I silently adored the teapot-shaped cookies.  Without words exchanged, the man took out 3 teapot cookies and gave one to the woman behind me, one to the man who'd just entered, and one to me.  No charge.  The cookie was pretty much my idea of a perfect cookie - buttery, not too sweet, not too soft, and a good snack size.

In short, Leland is not too sweet, not too crowded, not too expensive.  As Goldilocks would say, this place is just right.

This place is AMAZING! They have my business forever, and with high recommendations. I have never had a poor experience - the tea is great, the service is great, the food is great, the whole atmosphere is peaceful and inspiring. It is the perfect place to bring a friend and have relaxing conversation, to read your favorite book or write in a journal, do homework or work projects, or spend your afternoon - they even have FREE wifi. And everything is decently priced for what you're getting! Seriously check it out, it's hidden away and you'll never know what you're missing if you don't make a point to try it!

I'm so sad I found this place only 4 months before I'm moving out of San Francisco.

Aside from the free wi-fi, pleasant atmosphere, and great tea, this place gets my enthusiastic recommendation because they never bring you a check.  What you do is you go up to the counter to order, then  you just sit down and do your work.  The food and drink will come and when you're finally ready to leave, you just go up and pay your bill.  Now THAT is service.  They don't try to hustle you out of there by putting on shitty looped music at just the right level so you stay there for 45 minutes and get sick of it and leave (READ: Starbucks).

No, everything they do there is to make sure you have a good, relaxing time.  If I could give six stars, I would.

TIP: If you order any food, the cost of the tea goes down from $5 a pot to $2.  Each pot gets a free refill of water, which basically comes out to 6 cups of tea for the life of a pot.  Insane.

This is truly one of my favorite places in the city, and I am so lucky to only live two blocks away from it.

I am not the kind of person who wants to interact with strangers very much, but Will is one of those incredibly vibrant people who is quite clearly in love with the world and he made me feel instantly at ease.

On my first visit, I tried the Cocoblanc and was there with a friend. It was very laidback, not at all busy, and the perfect setting for some tea and sympathy. The second time I went back and had some of the peppermint chamomile tea and took advantage of the free wireless to get some work done.

I think this is one of the hidden gems of the city -- I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to get away from busy coffee shops. Great atmosphere, great tea, great service, and great prices. I will be back repeatedly!

This place is awesome. I had walked by it a million times but only recently went in as I am trying to get into the "tea thing."

Will is truly talented and caters your brew just to your liking. He asked me what I typically drank and offered suggestions for a blend. I went in just to investigate and left with the most amazing cup of tea (on the house, no less) I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. I was back two days later and bought the largest size tin available. In fact, I'm drinking a cup right now and it's absolutely delicious.

Will makes all his own teas and owns the shop with his mother, so you are guaranteed freshness and quality. He really knows how to run a business and get his customers hooked! I will be back and I'm bringing others!

Wow. A true gem. I'm so grateful my friend took me here this morning. It was gray outside and misting rain and there couldn't have been a better place in the world to spend two hours of our Saturday morning. For this cozy little tea house, the music could not be more perfect. It is gorgeous inside with antique style and decor-- copper pipes lining the ceiling, shabby-chic cabinetry, hand-painted tabletops-- even the bathroom is adorable! The staff is very cheerful, attentive, and knowledgeable.

We enjoyed a Two for Tea that came with four 1/2 sandwiches-- we tried the chicken salad (SO awesome, much better than I was expecting), turkey, tomato and brie, and cucumber with cream cheese. They were all fantastic. The Two for Tea also came with bottomless house tea that was perfectly blended. Additionally, it came with a full plate of salad, a nice small bowl of fruits, two scones, and two tea cookies. ALL for $21.95. WOW!

I suggest you do like I, and compensate with a generous tip-- I can't think of a place or people who deserve it more.

A San Francisco MUST!

Wow this place trully is amazing and the coolist thing about this tea bar is that I was able to make my own tea blend, custom label it, and enjoy it all in the same day. Life is good, really.....I enjoyed a hot panini cheese sandwich, a cup of fresh tomato bisque, my custom tea blend, and fresh baked short bread cookie, for a total of $12.65 and yes I was full.

Wil was very attentive and althought he was busy he made it a point to quickly come to my table and inform me that although he was busy (obivously) he didn't want me to feel as if I was beeing neglected. Who is this man? and why isn't he offering customer service classes to the planet!!

I have to say I have NEVER bussed my own table at any establishment that serves food, and I totally bussed my own table. That is how good I felt at Leland Tea and when he saw me bringing up my plates he was ringing up some other folks,  he reached into the pastry case pulled out two madelines and said thank you very much that was very kind of you to do that.

I'm simply taken by the kindness that just raidiated from him and everyone that was there. If this escape is only for an hour a day for lunch make it worth your wild and go, the decor, the food, the ambiance, all well worth five stars.

Cute place and the tea is tasty.

Today, me and two of my gal pals had our Holiday Luncheon at Leland's. My friend Lisa had been here many times and Cathy and I had been excited to finally get to try it out.

It was quite brisk outside so it was nice to walk into such a warm and cozy place.  They were just about full to brim with customers and were obviously preparing a large catering or to go order.  We scanned the menu and each decided on the tea with 2 1/2 sandwiches and salad.  I chose the brie and tomato and  ham and cheddar.  Also sampled at our table were the cucumber/cheese, roast beef and chicken salad.  There were no complaints I seriously thought we were going to lick our plates. We also each got a tea cookie and scone each- Delicious ( I had a choc chip one!)  Each of us got a different type of tea and let me tell you its not easy to narrow down - their selection is huge.

The staff was very friendly and stopped by frequently to tell us thank you for our patience.  Remember I said they were full and preparing a large order we waited quite a while for our food hence the 4 vs 5 star.

I highly recommend this spot for tea/lunch or a snack.  Don't forget to bring your friends or your computer for the free WIFI.

My girlfriend and I went to Leland for afternoon tea this past Sunday.  We had the tea for two service.  Tea selections are great.  I had the Pear Caramel and it was great.  My gf had the Earl Grey mixed with Vanilla Bean Crme.  She said her tea was not strong enough, but it was good.  The tea for two service comes with four  sandwiches, romaine salad, fruit, scone and tea cookies.  We ordered salmon salad, cucumber & cream cheese, and roast beef & gorgonzola.  The sandwiches were great.  Salad was good (but it's a bit weird to have salad and fruit during "afternoon tea").  The cookies were okay.  The most disappointing thing was the scone.  The texture was nothing like how it should be.  It tasted kind of stale.  The marmalade jam was okay (tasted like any store bought jam), but I wish they had something more "special".
Overall experience was good.  I just wish the scones were better; after all, it is high tea.
