O.K., this one is a bit of a trip for those of us who live in Central San Diego.  It's really a much better bet for those who live in North County.  According to Google Maps, I traveled 63+ miles to eat at Lei's Hawaiian BBQ.

Why, you say, why would I go so far to get Hawaiian food when quite serviceable alternative restaurants abound down here?  O.K., my primary reason was to go check out my friends in the group Makena perform at the opening since I've never gotten to check them out live.  Getting Hawaiian food was a happy bonus.

I went to Lei's for their Grand Opening celebration.  It may not have been the best day to go though because it was really crowded.  There were some problems with my orders and those of other folks as well.  But I figure that sort of thing is to be expected with any new place.  The kinks still have to be worked out but more importantly the kinks don't appear to be with the quality of the food just the correctness of the orders.

I got the Hawaiian plate special.  It's not specifically listed on the menu but was there for the day.  I'm sure that there will be a variety of the same at some point regularly.  I got lau lau, kalua pig, lomi lomi salmon, chicken long rice, poi, and haupia for about $14.  It also came with a free shaved ice.  I made sure to request a couple SPAM musubi for $3 but it's not normally listed on the menu just written in.  This was weird though because to me a Hawaiian place without SPAM is like a McDonald's without hamburger.  All was well, it was pretty tasty and the portion size was pretty good (especially the lau lau).  There was a problem though.  I was about 3/4 of the way through the food before I realized that I didn't get my poi.  What's sad is that I didn't have enough food left to eat with my poi.  I just can't eat poi straight without anything else because it would be like eating steamed white rice all by itself.  I did mention it to them but I didn't raise a ruckus because they were desperately busy back in the kitchen and because I was enjoying the entertainment.  It is a testament to the food that I didn't notice the missing poi until so far into the meal.  It did take a little while for the food as well.  It's not going to be as fast as going to other places like L&L, etc. if that's what you're used to.  Expect waiting something like 15 or more minutes if it's really busy and DEFINITELY check your food before you run out the door with a take-out order.  I made a take-out order before leaving because I won a $10 gift certificate in their raffle and got a completely different order and had to return it for the right one.  I'm sure that quality control RE:orders will improve quickly as the staff gets up to speed.

Lei's has more than just the typical Hawaiian food.  It also has a variety of salads and even has has Hawaiian-style pancakes for those of you unlike me and able to wake before 11 AM.  They have announced that they will be offering portobello sandwiches as well sometime soon.

So if you happen to be way up North County near Temecula/Murrieta way, stop by and try Lei's Hawaiian BBQ.  The food was good, the folks were friendly and the prices were reasonable.

The food here is good! unlike Dale, i can eat poi straight so i wasn't crazy about it having been sweetened but hey i guess gotta cater to the "haole" tastes. everything else on the hawaiian plate was really good - laulau, kalua pig, haupia and the chicken long rice was so ono! the chicken for the chicken katsu is really good and tastes a lot fresher and juicy inside than most other places.  i always get burned on lomi salmon (see my review on Bob's) but here there were actually substantial pieces of salmon in there!  but i know better than to expect that at any other place.
anyway, this place is well worth it - prices reasonable and i think you'll find the food tastes much fresher than most L&L type places. i am told the owner is from hawaii and had a very successful and popular eatery there, too.
