I love this dump!
Every time I go here I have a roaring good time. Lots of dancing, loud music, and people who just wanna have a good time. Beers are fairly priced, back room with different music from the front (sometimes of a theme), little outside gated off spot to get some air. Good mix in the crowd, too. All different kinds of people. Its hard to find bars you can dance in that still have the divey bar feel to them. This is a good one. -

went there for a b-day gathering, not knowing what exactly to expect. turns out that this place attracts a super obscure crowd, with a mix of hipsters, hip hoppers, and lesbian rockers. not saying that I didn't like Legion, I just spent way too much time trying to get a feel for the crowd. the dj's odd selection of 90's jams cranked up to nearly maximum levels wasn't helping much either.
I will say, however, the beer selection was good, and 5-6 dollar pints go down really smooth! some friends were having cocktails that were reported to be very strong, which is always a good time. the service wasn't bad either.
all in all, Legion is an eclectic little dive, but probably more tolerable when visited during off-peak hours.
cheers! -

The bartender was wearing a green Heineken logo tanktop and had green sleeve tats and acted like a perfect green gentleman.
They were out of most drinks on their menu but $5 whiskey/beer combos worked well enough. -

Really unfortunate time here. Where to begin?
I've lived in the general Graham stop vicinity for years and occasionally stopped by here for the cheap specials, and because there aren't that many options in the area. I just moved 2 blocks away and was assuming this was going to be my fall-back neighborhood bar...
So last night, I had some buddies over for dinner and afterwards, we decided to go down for a round at the bar. Earlier that day I had given my gf my ATM card to do some shopping etc. and she wasn't home yet, so I didn't have any cash. But as we were just going for one round, I reckoned it would be no problem to gather quarters from my laundry can, seeing as how it's just a neighborhood dive; who would care?
We go inside and sit at the corner of the bar (3 of us). For a solid five the bartender does not even look at us as he yacks it up with a group of his friends at the other end of the bar. He finally comes over and semi-apologizes and says he'll be right back. He then goes off to slowly mix another few drinks for his friends.
At this point it was no big deal. We were just carrying on our own conversation and were in no great hurry.
A few minutes later he finally comes back to take our order...
My stack of quarters were sitting on the bar. Before even asking what we want, he just looks at the quarters and says "Just so you know, I'm not taking those.I can't use quarters." We were all a bit confused, but just proceeded to order. While he' off getting the drinks, my two friends get a little riled up. For one thing, quarters are legal tender. What do you mean you won't take them?
I understand it's a somewhat annoying thing to be paid in a stack of quarters, and I was a little bit embarrassed to do it, but I didn't have my ATM card, and I didn't want to make my buddies buy my round when it wasn't necessary. And it's not like we're at some class joint; it's a local neighborhood bar. Who the fuck cares? Make a crack about the quarters and get over it. But no... The guys insists that he cannot accept them, offering logical fallacies like "I can show you my change drawer, it's empty. I can't do anything with change." Again, what do you mean, just logically? It's legal tender. Will the bank not accept it? What do the contents of your drawer have to do with the national monetary system?
We were pretty calmly, bemusedly, jokingly/sarcastically just asking the guy what the big deal was about accepting $6 in quarters. He gets super huffy and says "Really guys? We really have to have a big thing about this? I'm really disappointed..." etc...
Well us too, man. Here I am just offering some legal money for one drink so that I don't have to mooch off my buddies. I'm in a pinch because I don't have my card, and you make me feel like an asshole, refuse to take my money, make me borrow from my friends, and make my friends into assholes when they confront the irrationality of your stubborness.
Pretty sure I'm not welcome back there anymore. And very disappointed that this is what I get from the place I was hoping would be my local hangout, now that I live 2 blocks away. It just doesn't make sense on a business level, or a human decency level.
That saddest part was that it was completely full of cute girls. A rare concentration, and we had to leave because the guy was such an uptight jerkoff to us. -

I want to give this place 3 stars just because it's in Williamsburg (I kid, I kid) but I can't because I actually really enjoyed myself. I went there for a 90s sing-a-long which was excellent. They have a good-sized back room with a huge projector screen. The DJ played lots of fun 90s songs and everyone sang. Much more fun than karaoke.
The bartenders were a little slow due to zillions of people in there but nice. Cash only at the bar, though there's an ATM inside. The music on the dance floor was good too, and didn't "leak" into the back room where the singalong was.
It was crowded as fuck and there was no TP in the one bathroom which is why I docked it a star, but I'll probably be back. -

How I do enjoy furthering my adult education in particular with explanations of certain *American* cultural practices and definitions of many new *American* terms and phrases (it is tough sometimes coming from across the big pond). I mostly have BT and Stef to thank for all that I learn, so one fine Hallows' eve, we had decided to flex some of this exciting new vocabulary in a practical sense (I had just be informed what a "an Edward 40 hands" meant) and party like it's nineteennightytwothousandten...
Just providing you with some context of the introduction to the night which ended in legendary-legioness.
We also had inches of fake blood and metal erupting like cyborg acne from our pretty faces which we had applied rather masterfully whilst allocating the contents of several bottles of cheap red-wine on fast-track straight to the pits of our stomachs.
Ok so house party in Brooklyn- sitting on a car after having completed (in a spectacular messy fashion) my first attempt at "shotgunning" as the presence of duct-tape was sadly a negative. Utterly trashed, (with the addition of jello-candies and blue cake to our already *sightly* facial attire) we are somehow mysteriously lead down the road to the baron carpark in front of White Castle (only recognizing the significance of such an institution thanks to LadyC).
Whoops- wrong corner- make for the diagonal across the road- got it! Legion- open wide your gates of ingratiating squalor- the night has just begun!
But wait- problem first! In my inebriated stupor I have not my wallet on me! Nothing in my pockets except...wait for it... my metro-pass and work ID. Wicked that'll do. There's a picture of me, a company logo and my name. That's it. Certainly no DOB.
Doorman: IDs please
Me: (confidently whips out work ID) dah-daaaaaaar!
Doorman: What is this?
Me: my KPF ID (duh- don't you recognize it? Why wouldn't you know of this company that I work for in a Tishman Speyer building in midtown)
Doorman raises an eyebrow
BT: (to the rescue) yeh I have one too (flashing his own in the doorman's direction)
Doorman: ok in you go.
(What-the...?!) Only at Legion.
I think we closed down the place that night but not before knocking out everyone on the dance floor with some fab-tastic-propeller-like dance moves and at least 3 more g+t's down the gullet (thanks BT).
Even scored a free cab ride back to the island with some random ass White (Castle) chick who had no idea who we were but was going all the way to the bloody UWS, and didn't know that dropping us off in Chinatown was a complete (and pricey) detour... man you gotta know this city better gurl. -

Mildly entertaining for a Graham Avenue stop on the L evening. You can get a tecate and a well shot for $5 and there is a DJ playing a mix of generally danceable stuff (last time was Cyndi Lauper and some freestyle dance music). If you are starving and want to top the night off, White Castle is across the street.
You may feel too old for this bar if you're over 25. -

Lame, dismal and dreary bar with a couple of options: you can hang out in the back room and have a bad time, or you can hang out in the front room and have a terrible time. Dimly lit, and super loud. I was picking up some heavy bad vibes from the patrons of this dump.
CAUTION: DO NOT GO TO WHITE CASTLE ACROSS THE STREET. -

This place is really odd. Right in Williamsburg. A friend of a friend who lives in Greenpoint suggested this place. I thought that it would be halfway decent, but the music was horrible, and the crowd was even more horrible. There were djs there, I swear, on a Saturday evening, I swear they were playing crap 90s hip hop just to make everyone go home. Even the bartender was making faces to the DJ with a "what are you doing?" face. The only good thing was that the beer was cheap. There were also booths which was comfortable. The crowd though, was that horrible suburban crowd. I can't imagine they came all the way out to Williamsburg to go to this place.

I came here for a 90s sing music video along. What an excellent experience!
They have good scotch here. That was completely unexpected.
I did feel a little old here, and I'm 26.
Very croweded place! When the 90s sing along (which was totally packed) was done, I moved from the back to the front, only to find everyone had packed in there for a dance party. I just wanted to get out of there at that point. -

So the only reason i stopped by this bar was because its super close to my house, and PulseJFK listed it as having a free open bar. Turned out it was just Jello shots if you do some karaoke. Not to bad of a deal. But i chose to skipped the singing and ordered a beer, it was still early so the bartender was just hanging with some folks who i figured were his friends not really paying attention.
Ok i get it, its a bar i don't expect to have the bartender to rub my feet and serve me beer in a golden pimp cup. BUT i do expect him to be polite. I don't expect to be spoken to in such a rude manner. He demanded to see our id's no problem, it is a bar, that's gonna happen, it was just the way he said it. "I wanna see your id's right now!" OK officer, can i have a bud, please. I feel like maybe he thought we were underage. He threw my friends change on the bar and walked back to his friends and left over Domino's without a word. It felt like we broke up his party.
We took our rage poured beers, outside and chilled out there, wondering if we were just being overly sensitive about the bartender's attitude. As we pondered some guys walked out uttering the words " what's with the dick behind the bar" So it wasn't just us.He might have just been having a bad night, but still no need to take it out on the customers.
Other than that, the beer was great at 3bucks, the outside area was basically a fenced in sidewalk with a few benches but comfy. But the bathroom was beyond gross, nothing that couldn't have been cleaned up with a little elbow grease. A chill bar just to grab a drink, maybe on another night when Mr. Grumpy pants isn't working. -

A pretty cool bar with cheap drinks and good djs. They actually played classic gangsta rap and the songs classic gangsta rap sampled. The point is, they were jams, not your usually "my record is more obscure than yours" dj set. This is more than refreshing.
The crowd is made up of really young hipsters who dance like Mike Myers in that old SNL sketch "Sprockets". I'll leave the judgment of whether this is a positive or a negative to you. But I will say that if you are in your mid-twenties, this probably isn't the place to mingle with strangers. -

Friend wanted to come here after she randomly popped in some time ago to check out why there was a line. When she went in, they were playing some good club/dance music and place was packed. Unfortunately, she had to go home early that night.
Fast forward a few months, she decides to take me and a few others there on a Saturday night. When we get there around 10pm the place is pretty empty.
Around 11pm, my friend decides to request better music to dance to because what the DJ was playing was putting everyone to sleep. You could tell people wanted to dance but the crowd was NOT feeling the music. The only person that probably liked the music was the DJ himself. He was playing some old 80s music and very alternative music that people in their early 20s would have never heard of.
My friend requested nicki minaj Super Bass and that was the ONLY time there were a few people on the dance floor. After that, the music probably pissed everyone off because huge crowds of people left and the bar was PRETTY EMPTY the rest of the night. People kept trying to enjoy the time but gave up because the DJ's music was that boring.
We stayed till about 12:30 because we decided we couldn't take it anymore. The terrible music was too loud, which means we couldn't dance AND we couldn't talk to each other. epic fail.
Friends and I did not have a good time. The 1 star is for the cheap drinks at the bar.... Cheapest beer was the Atomic Lager $3, which tastes terrible, but at $3 what do you expect? Mixed drink like a baybreeze was $6. -
Review from Jeff O.
Woodside, NY
It's probably my favorite selection of beer of any bar. That's right. I can't believe it either. More than a few intriguing taps plus 2 ever changing cask ales. Love that cask stuff. Always a wild ride. Now, you can obviously go to Spuyten Duyvil and get more of a variety, but the selection here is strong. Very strong. And more concise. I like concise.
2 rooms. The front gets crowded and when walking the bar's length, a trip to the back room is sometimes hampered by stillness. Utter stillness. That privacy can get depressing when people are only dotting the corners if at all and a different DJ's dance music is playing.
The bartenders are nice. The visitors are not annoyingly young and dumb like that of BCC. How come no one makes me want to throw up here? Is it the lighting? Most people still wear black, and there's still sideways caps and people from the midwest, but the pretense isn't as prevalent here.
That being said, I have yet to have a "conversation" with anyone there. It seems like people come with groups and stay with their groups. Check that, I talked to some idiot who was telling me that I looked like a writer and he had a cartoon about the most perfect weed that was too beautiful to smoke. Seriously annoying idiot. I asked him if he came here alone and if he lived in the neighborhood, and just when I realized these were the questions of a pickup artist, I got up and left him dry. or wet. Ugh, that's nasty.
Sometimes a lack of a jukebox is frustrating, but I dig the DJs most of the time. I like 90 percent of the music, with 80 percent recognizable to me. Which, at my elder age, when I no longer care about new music, is appreciated. I'm sorry!
Getting back to the alcohol, there are some cheap options, but also high marks beer and liquor. It's the breadth of beer and liquor makes this a beerdrinker's bar. The space and music make it a bar for hanging out. The combination makes it a bar I always say Yes to.Listed in: I Drink and I Smile, Where Bushwick At? Don't say…

Decent bar with a ton of hipsters, drunk hipsters, flirty hipsters, and drunk hipsters, oh... cheap drinks, that's why...
Music is LOUD, i mean scream to your ear and you would still go "huh?" loud. The selection isnt half bad, they have events like sing along, karaoke and live DJ.
Usually packed on weekends but if you like to enjoy some random people dancing next to you, its the place to go. -

I am on a quest. For the Holy Grail of bars. The scrolls have outlined the destination I seek...
Not too crowded, but not too empty
Good music (This is relative, but I'm pretty easy going. Put on some new wave, some old dance hitz, The Clash..you feel me)
People that aren't begging for me to projectile vomit all over their bodz
*Fairly* priced drinks
Lacks the scent of urine
Many places fit this bill on the weekdays, but I have yet to find a bar that can measure up on my time off. I spoke to Jeff O. of my quest and the other day I received a message with the recommendation of Legion. If you know the legendary Jeff O., you know he generally speaks the truth.
I made the journey to Graham Avenue (a taxing couple of stops on the L train) and walked to Humboldt. The view from Legion's doors is exhilarating. My eyes fell upon a giant ivory and blue castle. Perhaps my quest was complete.
Walking in my eyes were met with a sight that is rarely seen in these parts....EMPTY BOOTHS! There were three of them. I wondered if someone had defecated or regurgitated upon them, but that was not the case. They were pristine in condition and very comfortable.
The apothecary (you call these...bartenders?) was clothed in black, with dark lined eyes and a scowl. Much like I imagined the famed sorceress Morgan le Fay. He poured stiff drinks and refreshing ales. The music, while very loud (difficult to have a conversation at times), was a pleasant surprise. "New Order" and some serious "disco" were blasting in front, while the awkward dance party in back was fueled by the melodies of "Blondie". Most everyone at this bar seemed to live in the neighborhood, but wasn't as menacing as many of the other bars I had been to.
A feeling in my gut told me that I had not arrived at the Grail, but I was definitely heading in the right direction.

Get past the annoying (but sometimes fun) music, crowds of 21 year olds and the occasional obnoxious bartender and you (honestly) will have a good time. The beer + wine selection is pretty good and their scotch + whiskey selection is surprisingly stellar. Legion is a great place to let loose and dance or take your drinks outside, find a lil spot and camp out for some good chats.
Try it at least once - if you do not like the crowd, just run across the street to harefield for an older, more private crowd.Listed in: Williamsburg Graham L(ish)

Legion is a personal favorite of mine for a lot of reasons. I usually go there on weekend nights and I always have a good time. The bartenders are mostly nice and very friendly. The music on weekend nights can vary quite a bit, but with the exception of the occasional lousy DJ the music is almost always great. Most weekend nights the music definitely is geared to towards fun and dancing with some downright tasteful things mixed in. My only complaint about the music is it is always too loud, even during the week when there are only 3-4 people in the bar.
The drink selection is great for the most part. There isn't much selection in terms of cocktails which is a weak point, but the selection of beers and liquors more than makes up for it. Also everything is very fairly priced.
The small fenced in outdoor area is nice though sometimes cramped. It's great during the summer when it gets too hot and crowded inside and it's always nice to go outside for a bit if inside is too loud for a real conversations.
One thing I really enjoy about Legion is I've always had a good experience with the crowds there. Aside from the occasional drunk weirdo who smells bad and wants to talk my ear off (these dudes are at every bar though), I've met a lot of nice people there and I can usually rely on having a great time with new or familiar faces. -

You know those crappy bars in midtown that are super loud and full of obnoxious bridge and tunnel types? Places you end up at because some friend of a friends is meeting people there?
Well, put that in Brooklyn, replace the Jersey and LI douchebags with dudes in skinny jeans "rocking out" "ironically" to music from the 80s and 90s, and you've got Legion.
It's sad, because this used to be a kind of mellow, low-key neighborhood spot called the Pourhouse. -

Brooklyn, NY
There is this one bartender there that looks exactly like Morrissey, only short and ugly. I am convinced that he is the Danny Devito to Moz's Arnold in the horrible real-life experiment that inspired the delightful 80s comedy Twins.
That said, Bizarro-Moz is a bit of a dick, slamming pints down onto the bar and walking away in a huff after apparently mishearing Mrs. R.'s order. The rest of the staff has been helpful and generally friendly in my experience, so I guess this guy might still be sore about losing his gig as lead tambourinist of the Smiths before their label debut.
Beer selection is good and the prices are right, but the DJs are really hit or miss sometimes. The irony of Bob Dylan to Black Rob might get some hipsters wet, but it's not the most danceable fare for those of us with normally developed self-esteem.
I've had some great times here, but considering I was solicited with offers of "good fucking blow" half a dozen times last Saturday, I would say the weekend crowd is falling off. Just don't sleep on the live bands and stand-up in the back room during the week. -

Seriously, always good fun. Even when it's absolutely packed.
Always a fun unpretentious eclectic crowd. I've discovered that the slightly buzzed to absolutely hammered people are always friendly and we all get excited about the same tunes at the same time. Legion is the epitome of brooklyn fun - beer, music, and people.

Perfectly nice place. I was here last night to see a free comedy show in the room in the back. I actually really liked the space back there. My biggest gripe was that the bartender, though she was nice enough, poured my Guinness in one long pour instead of two. It took a loooong time to settle.

Went here the other night finally. It opened maybe 2-3 weeks ago making Harefield (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) the only choice around these parts since taking out the Pour House. Beer selection is trying too hard. They've got some good breweries on tap, but their worst brews or nothing too special. The crowd is young (maybe too young? or maybe I'm getting old, sigh). The music is WAY loud (I must be getting old), and the bar seems to suffer the LES identity crisis-syndrome: Punk bartenders, 70s DJ sampled music (poorly at that), classic decor with fireplace and sidewalk benches for smokers, and a not so known unlevel $1 pool table in the back. The pool table will make for some interesting games since it is not level, on a tile floor, and slides. Oh well. I think I may have liked the smoke-hazed video game room of Pour House better.
Nevertheless, at least it's something else when Harefield Rd. is too crowded or too "classy."Listed in: My Neighborhood

This is a decent local bar in a decent neighborhood. It is close to Whitecastle and the Graham Avenue stop on the L. I wouldn't call the drinks "cheap" by my standards, but they are...uh...less than what you would pay in Manhattan? So I guess the place has that going for it? The atmosphere ranges from laid back and nearly empty for weekday happy hours, to rowdy and packed on weekends. I would have given Legion four stars, but there is one bartender who is an absolute bitch.

Had a great time last night, no real complaints here. Ample varied space at the bar, on the dance floor, on the few couches and in the few booths, and in the back room with pool table. Staff was not the fastest or friendliest but I'd happily go back again regardless. Loved working it out to the great music - very upbeat - very fun - and even the tiny little bathroom the opened up onto the dance floor (eek!) didn't bother.
After walking through the 20 degree cold following the questionable directions, "It's to the left, to the left, to the right and then next to the white castle" I was very happy to arrive, and hours later, sad to leave. -

Did you know I've lived here 3 months and have never ventured up the street in the direction of White Castle? I only live a block away. For some reason, I've restricted my travels on Metropolitan to anything south of Graham. How limiting.
Indeed, when I have a) a very cool bar just up the street with an extensive beer menu and b) a fast food legend (ie, the East Coast version of In and Out). Okay, maybe I'm giving b) too much credit (it's not like the In and Out has its own frozen food line, but there's never been a movie made about it -- other than honorable mention in the Big Lebowski).
Sorry, what were we talking about? Ah yes, Legion. Good bar and atmosphere, although the music does hurt granny's ears from time to time, and stumbling distance from my house. I don't really know what else to say about it.Listed in: A Brooklyn Queen

I like legion - the bar itself is nice, there's a good amount of seating as far as bar's go. The outside area is a bit tight but its better than having no outside area to bring your drinks.
The music is pretty good most of the time and I generally have a good time when I go but, a couple of the bartenders are kind of assholes. I get it, drunk people are annoying when you're trying to work but if a girl gets a beer in a broken glass - just replace the damn beer. Is it that hard? If another girl asks for water twice because it seems like you didn't hear/weren't listening the first time... don't shoot her nasty looks for it.
When I used to bartend, I got really good at the fake smile. It made me more money.
On the other side, I did have a guy bartender tell me he liked my top once, so that was nice.
Lastly, white castle is a REALLY good idea at 3am. white castle is a REALLY bad idea at 11am the next day. Beware. -

Legion is a very solid bar, mixing dive/club/lounge perfectly. They have $3 Atomic Lagers at all time, which is awesome, and they have a very cool atmosphere across two different rooms. So chances are if you don't like the first room, you'll dig the second.
Also, they have DJ's but they don't get too dancy (if that's a word... which it's not). So I def enjoy my times there. -

I give this place 5 stars because I could not get thrown out. I tried my damndest and it just didn't happen. I was soaked in beer, spitting beer, had foul things written all over me in Sharpie, shirt ripped off, humping another man in the middle of the "dance floor" while smashing into other patrons, yet no one would eject me from the establishment. I finally got too tired and fell on the floor a couple times. I got back up and left shortly after. Maybe people thought i was some sort of performance artist and they were witnessing my latest work. Williamsburg folk do love that sort of thing.

They have a great revolving selection of beers on tap and in bottles. It is hard to find cask ales and they constantly have two different casks that change about every 2 weeks or so. The fact that they usually have a good mix of types of beer rather than 10 different brands of lagers says a lot. The price points of different drinks are extremely diverse and uncommonly fair; another bold statement.
Their cocktails are fairly standard, definitely not their selling point like The Richardson, or Hotel Delmano or anything, but they serve the purpose.
The music is too loud usually, but the DJ's can be pretty good. The DJ who posted below me is definitely one of the best I have heard in the neighborhood. He spins with his friend every 2nd Friday.
It is a pretty mixed crowd on weekends of both regulars and different faces. I have always managed to have a great time and talk to interesting people (and have rather interesting experiences) out on their small sidewalk area. A lot of people dance, some people stand around, some people come in huge groups and have conversations. All in all it is a solid bar with a variety of different people with different stories to tell.
Don't bring an umbrella. It will get stolen. Trust me. -

Good times, good beer selection, unpretentious crowd, 2 min walk from my place, cheap... It's as yelp says - "A-OK". I prefer it during the week though.
