Mmm New England clam chowder! Why didn't I get the bowl size?
The lobster roll was pretty well packed with meat but didn't taste as great as I imagined in my mind before stuffing it into my mouth. Won't get that again but thanks Ms. Waitress for telling my the price since it was listed as market price.
If you need to hit the bathroom, it's down the spiral stairs with the water thing. Downstairs looks like a neat place to hang out. The restroom looked pretty cool too. It reminded me of the restroom in Hogwarts where Harry speaks in parseltongue and it opens up to reveal a secret entrance to the chamber of secrets. *cough* anyway...
We stopped in for dinner before a flight ... The service is very friendly and quick to meet our every need !
The food was so tasty and fresh ! The clam chowder is out of the world - it is heavenly !
Great for a crowd - grab all your friends - order drinks, dinner, apps... You will have a blast !!

Atmosphere: Old Dingy
Service: Below average
Food: Good
Price: Expensive
Bathrooms: They don't have them........
Soup was cold, service was spotty had to ask for everything!
Legal Seafoods is an upscale chain that consistently delivers quality calm chowder, lobster and fish.
The prices were reasonable. I received a great deal for a full-course meal under $50 that included a clam chowder as an appetizer, a 1.75 lb lobster with a choice of two side dishes and a dessert.
I definitely recommend this place if you want to try fresh lobster in Boston. This is the chain to go to....
This place is always packed so I recommend a reservation in advance. You can make reservation by calling the restaurant or doing thru http://www.opentable.com.
Okay, so us tourists (from San Diego) wanted to check out this place, thinking that we would be "on the water" since we kinda like that stuff - but no - you get a view of tourist kiosk stands and no water view. Ah well.
It was my Dad's birthday, so we ordered the Seafood Bake: 2.5 lb. lobster (yum!) , corn on the cob (eh), mussels (tasty), clams (best I've had in a long time), and chorizo. A LOT of food (thank goodness, 'cuz it was $70), and the Albarino wine went very well with it (a "steal" @ $40). Chowder was tasty - very thick, and great clams. Could have used some fresh pepper, but it wasn't offered?!?!!
So, food tasty, but.............Service = HORRIBLE!!!! I mean really, she wanted to continually up-sell us - after ordering $70 plates! Never came by unless she was unceremoniously delivering the food, and was all-in-all a horrible person to be around. Not to mention that you then have to PAY this person to do this to you. Wow. No thanks.
I've eaten at many different locations of legal seafoods, and it never really disappoints. I recall getting the lobster roll a few times (which was super filling), as well as the scallops. I got the butter sauce on the side. I also ordered a few of their oysters (not much variety) and their clam chowder. (Their clam chowder was not the best.)
Trip to Boston: $2500. Seafood sampler plate at Legal Seafood: $25. Spending the next 18 hours driving AND riding the porcelain bus: PRICELESS...
I enjoyed seeing and eating my meal the first time, not the second. I ate at Legal this July while on vacation. Excellent food, I must say, when eating it. The next morning, I wake up at four and puke every 10 to 20 minutes for the next 18 hours or so of my vacation. This was the most miserable I'd been ever. It's horrible to be stuck in a hotel room in a city on the other side of the country. What's worse is that we're on the outskirts of the city and precious vacation time is wasting away. My dad and I both had scrod, and he also started to feel sick. Never again will I eat scrod or at Legal altogether.
Went here with my parents the other day and its a good thing they were picking up the tab because the food is a bit pricey.
During the summer season, Legal is packed both inside and out. On nice days you can always put your name down and post up at the bar or wander over to the nearby Seal tank at the aquarium and say hello to my little flipper ridden friends :)
The inside is massive, with an oyster bar, fish tanks, and tons of seating. On nice days I would prefer to sit outside and people watch. Also, the outdoor seating is not conducive to large parties which will lessen your chance of sitting next to a baby flinging crab legs at your head.
I started with a steamed shrimp dumpling appetizer with seaweed salad which was delicious and for my main course I opted for the fried clams and fries . They were really delicious and the portion size was huge. There was no way you can finish it.
Of course there is always room for dessert though, and we ordered the Boston cream pie, which wasn't a pie really, more like a gelatanous blob, but a yummy blob indeed.
My mother ordered the lobster which they can crack open for you if you like and my dad went for the filet mignon and lobster risotto. Poor dad, he asked for his steak rare and it came well done and the risotto was a bit bland..no flavor and it was fried which i think is a bit unsual.
However, Legal brought their "A" game in the damage control department and gave my dad complimentary shrimp cocktail while he waited for his steak which came out within minutes.
This continues to be the place we always talk about and say, "Ooohhh...I miss Legal Seafoods!" It's always been a good family place for us.
When in Boston, I always recommend this place and especially the clam chowder. Nothing is better, not even the San Francisco Pier clam chowder!
My friend Matt and I had just been up and down Boston on foot all day, with nothing to eat or drink. My feet were badly blistered and I was exhausted. We decided to go "back" to Legal for some early dinner and much needed hydration. We were seated right away, which was awsome because it was the weekend and the place was packed. After we threw back a few glasses of water we ordered and I couldn't wait for their famous clam chowder and the crab cakes I ordered. The ice cold lemonade and the warm clam chowder hit the spot. The shrimp and crab cakes were all good, but I ate way too fast to enjoy the food. I hope to go again and really enjoy the food when I am not famished or dehydrated.
An upscale chain that consistently delivers quality calm chowda, lobster and fish. It's a safe bet. Your taste buds won't have a love affair, but they won't be disappointed either.
My boyfriend & I usually really like Legal's (especially the one in the Pru) but we had an underwhelming dinner at the one by the Aquarium Friday night. It was a gorgeous night and we sat outside, which was really the only good thing about the evening. Well, that and Emack & Bolio's for dessert).
Anyway, service was terrible. Our waitress asked us not once, but 3 TIMES if we had any food allergies. Once is polite, I guess. But is it really even necessary for her to even ask us, considering we ordered raw oysters? Clearly we had no shellfish allergies (unless she thought we were on a mission to commit suicide). Anyway, asking us 3 different times throughout the night was just absurd! Plus, the oysters weren't as good as usual.
Oh, and get this, now, they bring the machine to your table and you have to swipe your credit card yourself. I did not like that at all!
This applies to all the restaurants in this chain, which has not much going on except the freshness of the seafood. boring and repetitious, they ride on the vast ignorance of visiting tourists and indifferent business expense accounts to keep them afloat. Although admittedly better than outposts in Washington DC. Sampled clam chowder, lobster bisque both good flavor but overly thickened with a greasy grainy mouth feel. Tasty lobster roll is the only good thing on the menu, but completely over priced. served with limp coleslaw and soggy fries.
#####
Update- cornmeal crusted softshell crab crunchy and tastey but fiendishly expensive. Fish Fillet staid and boring- served w/ frozen veg mix.
Service was spotty on all ocasions. Space was crowded and waitstaff poorly trained and distracted by larger more demanding parties with kids (devilspawn). Long wait for an outrageously expensive meal.
Why have I been more than once? you ask. I admit to family pressure. My cousin likes it there. But never again.
In general, I don't think you can really go wrong with Legal's...assuming that you like seafood. This is a relatively large location, but they lose one star for the insane crowd of tourists who flock there in search of the perfect cup of clam chowda.
This review is for the restaurant located at 26 Park Square.
The staff members were UNWELCOMING & RUDE upon our arrival.
((That should have been our clue to leave. )) The night did NOT get any better. They were out of LOBSTER!!!! (And this is suppose to be a known and popular seafood restaurant?) It took a long time before we got our main course. And to top it off the assistant to the server rudely clanged and banged the dinner plates and silverware onto of each other causing the unfinished food to splatter on our attire!
And if this information that I have given you isn't enough to deter you from dining there... so be it.
I work for the AIRLINES and I am very conscientious about rendering excellent service to the public who is keeping me employed. (Got the hint Legal Seafood employees??) I definitely WOULD NOT recommend you to spend your money or time at Legal Seafood. Instead , go to the Barking Crab Restaurant. I received only the BEST SERVICE with a GOOD ATTITUDE from the BARKING CRAB restaurant staff.

Yes, it's a CHAIN and I normally don't like chains. I also am not a chowdah-head - but DANG the fish chowder here is SUPERB. Grilled fish entrees were consistently good as well.
The food was great and I thought the prices were very fair as well. I didn't have the clam chowder since I'd just had some for lunch but the king crab legs were some of the best I've ever had. Although that could be that I'm from the midwest and our seafood isn't up to par like the East Coast. We had a very good crab dip for an appetizer although the seafood chips for dipping were very salty/spicy. Others in my party really raved about the lobster ravioli and some sort of seafood antipasto that they had for their meal. Someone else had the surf and turf and I believe they really liked the steak portion but the stuffed shrimp were just okay. We also had a fantastic bottle of wine here for only $24. The total for 4 of us with tip and a decent amount of alcohol was only $210 which I thought was a great price for seafood.
It was disappointing that to eat outside was just walk up and wait. No reservations or even the patio reserved for only people with reservations. The room we were seated in was very loud at first although they kept telling us one of the large parties was leaving and it would be quieter. It was still pretty loud throughout the meal. Our waitress was so-so. She wasn't particularly friendly, never brought us water at the beginning of the meal, and took forever to bring us a bottle of wine.
Their Lobster Bisque is very tasty, and their famous Boston Clam Chowder lives up to it's name. I love the east coast oysters, there the most delicious out of the four selections of oysters. The fried clams with corn bread! hmmm.. What I remembered most was the really Friendly Service! I was with three other people eating here about to fly out back to Oakland and they gave us 5% off from the Receipt and wrote us a "goodbye Have a Safe Flight" note on the bill. I dunno but i think it just struck me as really really good service.
I came here a few times and I love it, especially the lobsters and Cajun Shrimps. they were so delicious. I'll probably come back.
My first ever experience with Legal Seafood. Hopefully this is the one down by the aquarium, but nevertheless I have eaten at many Legal's across the Boston area and they are always so good! Even the one in Logan International Airport. The seafood is always so FRESH! You must get the clam chowder!
I popped in for drinks and apps with a friend tonight, and had a great experience. The line for a seat outside was long, so we snuck inside to find two seats at the bar in front of an adorably cute and subtly accented bartender, who sparkled his eyes at us and treated us like queens. The food was good, the service was wonderful, and even though there was a Red Sox game on TV, the crowd was tame. Next time you're on the waterfront, skip the line and head for the bar. Oh, and don't leave without ordering the onion strings. Yum-my!
my rating may be biased because i had SEVEN lb lobster....even though that lobster was gigantic...the meat was not tougher or anything...it tasted the same as any delicious lobster from a restaurant...the clam chowder was the best i had...then again i'm from southern california, so what do i know when it comes to clam chowder
never had anything else on the menu...but i did enjoy my lobster and clam chowder...inside decor is very nice and clean...a little on the upscale side
great clam chowder, no wonder it was served at the last 7 presidential inauguration. creamy, smooth, full of all the ingredients, each bite there was clam meat. if just to go for a bowl of chowder, it's worth it.
however, the service is relatively bad. we waited for at least 20 minutes to get some water and a waiter to remember us. and their other dishes were not really worth the higher-than-usual price just because of the name.
I'd say, go for the clam chowder, and leave room for seafood elsewhere.
We went to the Copley Plaza branch of the chain. The chowder was good and the raw oysters were good. The other $100 of food might have been good at one point, but sitting under a heat lamp will eventually ruin anything (especially mussels). I'm assuming our terrible waiter forgot to pick up, especially pathetic when you consider we were sitting right in front of everybody. We were impossible to miss, sitting there without any food. Where was the floor manager, by the way? Hello guy in tan suit with the earpiece! In the end, we forked over a ton of money for something worth very little. Lesson learned, it's a chain now. Skip the restaurant and just buy their fish to cook at home.
I LOVE Legal. I could deal with some lower prices, but then again I'd pay almost anything for their clam chowder. I've been here a lot, and one of my favorite dishes was the fish sampler (via the chef's choices). The mahi mahi was to die for.
great New England clam chowder!
