I hate Legal Seafoods. In fact, it should be Illegal Seafoods.
How can this dump of a place actually be featured in the book "A Thousand Places to See Before You Die." The only conclusion I have for that is you have to experience the bad before you can know the good..
The food isn't fresh, good, or worth your money. Please stay away. Thank you very much.

Sure this place was touristy but who the heck cares? I had the biggest meal ever - lobster, mussels, and I can't remember what else.
The food was good, but the service was slow at times. The cool part was that we were seated fairly quickly even though there was a huge line of folks waiting to dine too.

for BOSTON seafood. it's not very good. and way too pricey and way too corporate for me.
i just have one thing to say.
don't get the LITE clam "chowder"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i don't understand how they can even call it chowder... when i ordered it, i thought i would be saving some calories because they would use light cream or 2% milk instead of whole or something... however, they did not use cream or seemingly any ingredient that goes into chowder.
it was basically like eating clams in luke warm water. gross.
3.5 Stars.
Legal Sea Foods is a dependable, if expensive chain. You always know you are going to get fresh fish, and more often than not, very good service by your waiter or waitress. Of course you are also going to pay for it.
I had the opportunity to go to the Legal in Copley during a recent trip to Boston. I was impressed with the decor and location. It is inside a shopping tower so to speak, yet retained an upscale feel to the restaurant in my opinion. I was a bit perturbed that our party of 5 (myself and my girl Friends' family) were originally seated at a table for 4 "oh we can move a chair on either end". Huh? I wonder if they knew that the 5 of us would be having 3 courses, drinks, etc. if they would have subjected us to such a seating. In any event we asked to move to a more suitable seating, and they obliged.
The drink menu is pretty good and well executed. I had a Widmer Hefeweizen, my girlfriend had a Sam Summer, her Mother had some sort of Creamsickle Martini, her brother had a jack and coke and her Father had a Spicy Bloody Mary. He said it packed a real kick with some horseradish in it. I saw a girl at another table water her's down, so it must have been really spicy. We also split a bottle of summer Malbec. I say "summer" because I thought Malbec's were always big, Brazilian reds. This particular one was more of a rose'. It was good, and complimented the seafood well. It was also pretty reasonable, somewhere in the mid $20's range.
For starters we shared some oysters, an order of calamari (they have 4 or 5 options on the calamari preparation, we went with the spicy), and a few salads. All were good, the calamari was a table favorite.
I had the crabcake dinner as an entree. I did not like that the crabcake dinner did not have options as to the sides- it only comes with a side salad. The crabcakes themselves were good, if a little greasy. On the whole I was pleased that they were almost entirely jumbo lump, with very little filler. They had a mustardy sauce rather than mayo as the base filler. Pretty tasty on the whole, but I wish the bread crumbs or whatever did compromise the filler, were a little less greasy. My gf had the scallops which come in kabob form. She got about 16 small scallops, on 2 kabobs. They were very good, grilled simply with salt and pepper. Her father got one of the specials, I forget which fish, which was cooked on a cedar plank. I must say the server's description sounded amazing, but the execution did not live up to the billing. He said it was not particular flavorful, and the 2 sides it came with were both very small in quantity- one of which was hidden under the actual wood plank!
Our server was knowledgeable and friendly. The only other gripe I have is I am not sure if they validate parking or not, but they certainly did not offer. As a result we got stung with a $34 parking tab. If they do in fact validate, shame on them for not offering to do so.
All in all an enjoyable meal. I appreciate my gf's Father's generosity in taking us there. It could have been even better if Legal ironed out the few gripes mentioned above.

I'm at my conference in Boston, staying at Copley Place.
My co-workers drag me here, telling me "I got to go here".
Meh.
Chowder was very good.
But, later that evening, I actually hit up the vending machine down the hall......

Oysters.
Just went to Legals for an afternoon Oyster snack (Glidden Point and PEI. Glidden Points are large and sweet, less briny than the PEI). God, I just love the vinegarette spooned all over the meaty oysters. And I paired it up with a moderately spicy bloody mary, complete with cuke, celery, lime, pepper, and a healthy does of horseradish AND ketel one, with a side request of olives. Mmm mmm! And what's wrong with enjoying those warm, crunchy, but chewy little rolls that they serve with the meal?? On a cold, crappy, rainy day.... I think nothing.

If you took one of the Legal Sea Food restaurants and dumped it in the middle of, say, Nebraska, you might have a reason to visit. But when you're in a town that's brimming with wonderful seafood restaurants chock full of fresh offerings, it just doesn't make sense to spend your money (and you will spend quite a bit) at Legal. Having said that, it was my wife's first time to Boston, and a trip to Legal is probably required as much as a cruller at Dunkin and braving the crowds at Faneuil Hall.
Our first food item was the complimentary sourdough bread, which was amazing. From there, it was all downhill. We both got the chowder, and it had a distinct flavor which we found unappealing. My Caesar salad with crab meat was practically inedible: the crab was flavorless, and the salad itself was shabby. They even left in the stem of the iceberg lettuce, which is a first for me in all my years of dining out. My wife's fish & chips was pretty good, the fish light and flavorful, with excellent tartar sauce.
Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else, anywhere else if you want a good dining experience in Boston.
Ugh. I don't see why everyone gets so excited about Legal Sea Foods. Everything I have ever ordered there is bland at best. This particular location is a bit heinous because of the hordes of people from the shopping area crowding the place. Unfortunately this happens to be a default meeting place for both work and friends' family events.
The mussels taste about equivalent to what I could get anywhere in Boston; the sea scallops were rubbery when I ordered them. The caesar salad dressing also wasn't that great (certainly tasted creamy and fatty).
The service is slow and what is the point of waiting for food that is so tasteless?
Two stars for the fact that they offer a gluten-free menu and the usually yummy oysters.
This Legal at Copley was perfectly situated for me to run over to everytime I got too claustraphobic from my conference. I've floved the chowder and lobster roll for forever, so I had a couple while I was there.
And to the bartenders, thanks for being so nice to a lonely conference goer. And for not laughing when I asked if they make you all get matching haircuts, or if that was the Boston fashion?

Legal is consistently good. I've been to their various locations probably about 10-15 times and I have never been disappointed.I highly recommend the Rhode Island style calamari!!! Prices are fair on all menu items which keeps me coming back. I heart Legal.
I like this location in Copley way better than the one in the Prudential (less crowded, less tourists). I never really found Legal Sea Foods to be that great. It's always been fairly average to me, especially for the price you pay. The service has been mixed... sometimes they're attentive, other times it's really trying to even get their attention. Last time I came here I had a great time, though that probably had more to do with the bottle of wine than anything else.

Copley gets the shit end of the stick in the Legal's food chain. They're massively crowded most of the time, but they're astoundingly understaffed. As a result, most waitstaff is too rushed or too incompetent (except for the bar, but more on that in a sec.) They've gone through manager after manager in the last five years (including the noxious and notorious Scotty Pee-Pee Pants, who is the 27th avatar of Satan Incarnate Himself) and more turnover than any other Legal location.
The bar is about three feet long, unheard of at a LSF, and is trying to parch the thirst of the 200 people crowded around it. The bartenders at Copley, however, are fucking rockstars.
As for the food quality...well, it's Legal. The food is all processed at the QCC on the pier and shopped out to the various outlets, so you'll find that LSF is pretty consistent across the board.
I miss working with Mel R...she was a real sweetheart. She may still be here for all I know.
Despite above shit-talking, I have had a nice meal or two here. The room is pretty nice, very bright and airy with a great view of the South End. The space is not decorated in all dark wood and blue glass, the same way that every other fucking Legal is decorated. I was also fairly impressed with the speed and neatness with which the bartender shucked my Blue Points (they can be a tough shuck because the meats can be delicate) without hacking them to shreds.
For more insider info on LSF, check out my review on the Framingham location.

My expectations were really high, which is never good because it becomes impossible to please me. This place was all the rage when I went to grad school in Boston, but never had a meal because I was a veggie at the time. Now was my chance.
Can you say, "average"? I found a new beer, but that really wasn't Legal Seafood's doing. I got the special which was described as Cajun spiced coated salmon with a handful of scallops and shrimp, and a side of spinach. I thought that would be a good, "sample type platter." The scallops and shrimp were good but the salmon, overcooked, and that was most of the meal.
Service was good and they kept the beer flowing. If you're going to get seafood in Boston, don't go the chain route. Seafood is much more difficult to do well when you have 20 orders of salmon going at once.
I've been to other Legal's locations but this is the one I dined at most recently, so I'm reviewing it (and only based on it's merits, not an aggregate). The wait is long because the Pru shopping area is always crowded, but even more so the last time I went because it was marathon weekend. I was on business so I ate by myself and sat at the bar so I didn't have to wait 45 minutes to an hour for a table. The bar service was prompt and they kept my drinks refilled. I ordered a cup of chowder to start, duh, and it was as expected - very good. My main course was the crab cake combo served with scallops and shrimp; I substituted spinach for the mixed greens. The crab cake was awesome as were the shrimp and, most notably so, the scallops, but I was disappointed that the mustard sauce that accompanied the crab cake was almost overpowering. The spinach was far too garlicy, I was only able to eat about a third of it. Overall I'd definitely recommend Legal's, and everything I got with the exception of the spinach.
I'm not exactly sure how they were able to accomplish having the most clams I've ever seen in a bowl of clam chowder, while at the time it being the blandest chowder I've ever had?

So I've been in Boston for about 2 years and still haven't gone to Legal. This weekend I was feeling like a tourist and thought, "Hey, let's go to the Pru and eat at Legal... maybe take in a Duck Boat ride." Overall, I'm pretty underwhelmed. Granted, I did not partake in the clam chowder (which did smell pretty good), but what I did have (fried calamari -- pretty good, crab cake entree -- kind of greasy and the salad was overdressed, and bloody mary -- super duper spicy and kind of weak) was ok, but not outstanding. The server was very nice, but disappeared for a good ten to fifteen minutes when we were ready to order. Legal itself was pretty busy and filled with rich suburbanites wearing their favorite furs. Gross.
The madness of the Pru and Legal during the pre-Xmas shopping free-for-all snapped me back to reality. Gone was the wide-eyed tourist wanting to take in the sights, the sounds, the glory of Boston... snarky, slightly-cynical Jennie returned as I murmured, "OMFG, I have to get out of here!!!"
Legal Sea Foods is good. Legal Sea Foods is not great. I'd MUCH rather go to Atlantic Fish. Better fried clams and clam chowder there. I go to Legal Sea Foods and enjoy it, but it's not my choice seafood restaurant in Greater Boston.
Clam chower. GOOD
shared lobster bake with my friend. got fries and seaweed salad. nothing special. the lobster was all right... not worth the ridiculous amount of money it costed
Service was terrible, we got our food over an hour after we had ordered it.
the legal experience (appetizer) was only an experience in being ripped off.
but did i mention, the clam chowder, GOOD.
When I lived in Boston, Legal was just 'eh touristy and another chain restaurant.' Now that I live in LA, kinda miss it. East Coast does fish RIGHT! And their clam chowda....... um hum!

I agree about the best location ... out of the Legal Sea Foods chain.
This chain seafood restaurant always has me debating about its quality. The service at Back Bay is definitely more chic, compared to even the one at the Prudential.
The only food I've been satisfied overall is the clam chowder. They do have lobster roll, however it's not the best ever. It's convenient to go for a seafood meal at a reasonable price.

This is specifically for the Back Bay location near the theater district. I've been here several times and have found that the consistency of the food to be solid. The ambiance is good whether on a date or for business. Their menu includes Asian fusion style dishes that I found to be better than your typical New England style fried seafood. The one dish that I would strongly encourage that you order is the blackened tuna sashimi. The quality of the tuna is excellent, and was grilled perfectly. It was almost like eating a fine piece of filet mignon. The crab meat from the crab legs was sweet, and the coconut curry sauce I had with the mahi, mahi complemented the fish very well. So I would suggest that if you're looking for fried seafood or your typical New England steamed lobster go someplace else that is cheaper, but if you are willing to try seafood that is prepared a little more creatively give Legal's a try.

Strange experience. The food was good, but the service was pretty odd. Highlights include: wife asking for drawn butter for her steamed clams. Waitress says in response: "are you sure you need it, have you even tried them yet?" Also the patrons next to us requested no cheese on a salad as the man was allergic to it. When the salad was brought out with large chunks of cheese on it, the man told the guy who brought it out that he specifically had asked for no cheese on it. The guy running the food then instead of taking it back and making him another one which is what any normal restaurant would do, just with great annoyance and disdain picked off the cheese with the patron's own fork and left the salad there. Wow... never have I seen anything quite like that.

I usually like legal sea foods but this is the time probably start being skeptical about it. My friends visited me from out of the town, so I just thought we need lobstar for guests. We ordered England clam bake.
It is so much volume and all of my friends will be happy about it. However this time the clam were unpleasant looking. It looks like horror movie.
Anyway, they are still happy about lobstar. As always, I asked box to bring some back. Our plan after the dinner was having alcohol at the top of the hub. So I expected nice paper back to carry around, but they just gave us shabby "Thank you" plastic bag. You may be familiar with Chinese take out. That plastic bag was totally pooper for our nice plan. However I was glad that they didn't have smile on the plastic bag.
You know! I don't have a special moment frequently. That is why I care very small thing like bag....
Charles hotel legal gave me nice bag.....by the way.

The last few times I have visited Boston, I stayed at the Marriott Copley (which itself deserves a Yelp) that is conveniently attached to both the Prudential mall and the Copley mall. What could be better than that? Oh wait, I know. Having a Legal Seafoods restaurant inside both malls (where you don't even have to walk outside and down the wind tunnel that is Ring Road). Convenience has a brand new definition.
Because it's so nicely situated in the mall with a beautiful view of the South End, I haven't even tried the Legal in the Pru. Why mess with something that's already workin' for you? Everytime I've called for reservations it's been seamless and a table has been waiting whenever we arrived. The service in this place is really good and pretty consistent (except for the younger kids who just want to get out of there at the end of the night, but then again, who can blame em?). You can always expect a good experience at Legal, no matter which one you happen to visit.
Onto the best part of the place - the food! Actually in my wine-loving mentality, the wine list they have is the best part, but I'll say the food just to save face. The New England lobster bake is full of clams, mussels, a lobster, corn, linguisa and prefaced by a piping hot bowl of clam chowdah. The ciopinno I indulged in was equally good with the light tomato broth and dozens of clams and pieces of scrod in the mix. The seafood gumbo is also one of my favorites, but the one dish that takes the cake is "Shrimp and Garlic". BUT, ask for it with fresh shucked lobster instead of the shrimp (you'll get charged a little more, but it's worth it). The dish comes with linguini pasta, mushrooms, a whole lot of garlic and fresh lobster meat! You can't beat it. Order up a nice crisp Pinot Gris or a Malbec and you'll be in foodie heaven.

So overrated and overpriced due to their legendary status from great marketing through the years. Yes, you will get some pretty decent seafood and chowder here. But you will pay a couple of arms and legs for it.
Bottom line: Good seafood but there are better and less touristy places than Legal's in Boston like Atlantic Fish and No Name.
Okay here's the story...
My daughter who is a handful (3 years old) loves lobster so we took her to the Copley Mall Legal Seafoods. I know this sounds like it could have been a nightmare, but the server that we had was excellent. I believe his name was Bryan C...he took care of us and made my kid's birthday a great day! My wife and I greatly appreciated it and hence she and I decided to do this review. The Surf & Turf was amazing and the Boston Cream Pie is my favorite desert by far! Kudos to Legal Seafood for some of the best service we've received since we moved to Boston 3 years ago. Now if they could only tell me how to ensure my daughter doesn't pick up the accent....hmmmm
I ate here with a huge group of people after a long week and it was just the thing. The interior drips of old-world New England with lots of dark stained wood paneling, nautical themed design elements, and various ships models displayed around the dining area. The service is prompt and kind (diligently filling my water glass on a very regular basis), and the staff was quick to assist us...although we were a party of 25 and came there late, so we were probably the only major group of people eating there.
The food was all delicious. My salad was good, with a nice mix of chopped greens, walnuts, and apples, and not too much dressing. The highlight was definitely the entree, however. I got the Lobster Bake and I was not disappointed. A healthy sized lobster was presented on a bed of oysters and mussels with an ear of corn, a bowl of broth and a cup of melted butter. The bib that came along with it was also nice. Every was prepared well and I heartily enjoyed eating my delicious crustacean. The oysters and mussels were great too, many of them were very well sized and had nice meaty insides that filled their shells.
If there are any complaints I have, it would be the fact that all you get to eat the lobster are a seafood fork and a nut cracker. There are better tools to eat a lobster with, and a place that serves as many lobsters as Legal Seafoods ought to considering buying these tools. Other than that, it was great.

The wait for a table can sometimes be a little long, but that's to be expected at a place that's consistently packed most nights. The seafood is fairly decent.
When is the best time to eat here? When you are looking for a place to bring guests from out of town who want seafood in a setting way more upscale than a great little hole-in-the-wall clam shack where they'll get served on styrofoam plates. Also, when you've got to dine out with your brother's noisy children - Legal is always so busy and loud, no one ever notices just how obnoxious your nephews really are.

Call me a tourist, because this isn't my home town, but I sure do visit a whole lot! I like stopping by here for a variety of reasons. I think it's become a tradition every visit to stop in and get some yummy hush puppies and stuffed lobster. Service has always been prompt, and efficient. Food was 4 stars. Service was 3.
My friend and I each ordered the 2lber. Mine set me back $55. Gulp. (That's more than the price of an entree at a high end restaurant!) My friend's lobster was $60 b/c she ordered it baked. I will have to admit, they were very juicy and yummy - way better than the ones I got from Boston and Maine Fish at Faneuil Hall Marketplace. We also enjoyed the steamers.
I think our server was handling too many tables. Service was slow. In addition, it took us forever to get a check and his attention.
Thanks to Toro E and my bf for the recommendation to come to Legal Sea Food - even though it's so corporate but at least you know it's fresh.
Overrated! The seafood is average, nothing super amazing or spectacular. I think the best Lobster is from Maine. I tend to judge a seafood restaurant by its clam chowder anyway. But if I rated Legal Sea Foods just by their clam chowder, it would only get one star from me. ALL Legal Sea Foods serve the same cream of onion soup with clams in it. It would be nice to have clam chowder that tastes like clam chowder. The best clam chowder I've found is at Wells Beach Lobster Pound on Webhannet Dr. in Wells ME. Creamy, rich, and clammy(but in a good way). I know thats a heck of a drive for clam chowder done right, but if you are vacationing in ME you have to stop there. And right down the road a ways is Billies... really good lobster rolls-- not too much mayo, generous portions, no added celery or crap you don't need like lettuce.... just pure fresh lobster meat *drool*.

This is THE BEST Legal location. Awesome view of the South End, including the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and a much nicer atmosphere overall. This location tends to be a lot less crowded than the one on Boylston Street. The bar scene at this one is a lot less happenin, however, so if you are looking to hang out at the bar and meet lots of people opt for the Boylston location instead. However, if you want a good meal overlooking the South End, check out this location. The food is pretty much the same at all locations. I always find it to be quite good. I've never had a bad Legal experience. My absolute favorite menu item is the jalepeno cheddar polenta side. Yum.

LTK (Legal's Test Kitchen)
Not exactly the best place to bring your grandmother for lunch.. but I heard good things. I must have heard wrong..
Drinks: I had water, grandma had tea. I'd have to give them the thumbs up here.. the waiter came out w/ a book of teas for us to choose from. Grandma was confused. But she enjoyed it very much so... she had seconds. My water was delicious w/ the lemon, no hint of tap whatsoever. 4.5 out of 5
Appetizers: We had the fried clams, it was okay for 11.95..a bit of a small portion.. there was about 14 pieces of whole baby clams on top of cole slaw and mash potatoes and a thousand island dressing on top. We also had a cup of clam chowder , which of course is always good at legal's. Complimentary bread was a big disappointment. Two pieces of cold hard sourdough bread accompanied by a side of mush dipping sauce. 3.5 out of 5
Entrees: Grandma ordered the Yellowfin Tuna (medium) with a side of spinach and mash potatoes. 19.95 ..There was a variety of sauces to choose from for the entree, she chose the Lemon caper. It was okay, fish a bit dry, might be a little over cooked. Sauce was too mild. 3 out of 5
I had the crazy lobster, it sound good. 23.95.. Out came a deep fried whole 1 1/4 lb lobster ontop of stir fried lomein and black beans. Presentation was real nice, but how am i going to eat this thing? There was no sauce, which made the lobster very boring and made the deep frying almost pointless. 2 out of 5
Service: The waiter was very nice, but he was very busy running around. He forgot to give our ugly bread and was a bit slow coming back to take our order after bringing over our drinks. Never offered to see the desert menu, therefore didn't order any. 3.5 out of 5.
Setting: Very casual, bright airy atmosphere.
Everything was either a disappointment or on the brink of disappointment...Inconvenient location, next to the seaport hotel. A restaurant basically catoring to tourists and hotel vistors. A place i will never go to again. thumbs down, sorry legals.

COMMENTS ON ALL LEGAL SEA FOOD LOCATIONS:
Any place that attracts tourists usually gets bad reviews from locals, which is the case for Legal Sea Foods. To add more fuel to the fire, due to the success of the restaurant, Legal quickly expanded into a big chain with restaurants all over New England and even in Virginia. Should a chain restaurant that is popular among tourists get 5 stars?
I believe that restaurant should not get penalized just because it's popular. When there is success like Legal Sea Foods, there are underlining qualities that enabled it.
With that said, you need to be careful when ordering here, because not everything on their menu is 5 stars. More involved the cooking, worse it becomes. Try to stick with dishes that made them so popular: lobsters, clam chowder, steamers, broiled fish, oysters, etc. Everyone has their own favorite style of clam chowder and my favorite is at Legal Sea Foods. Their dessert, especially their soft chocolate cake, is awesome!
Service is consistent and usually very friendly. Place offers lively atmosphere good for families, students, and even business crowd. Every time I visit a city with Legal Sea Foods, I make an effort to dine here at least once.
SPECIFIC NOTES FOR THIS LOCATION:
This branch of Legal Sea Foods in Copley Place is one of my favorites because it tends to get less people than Prudential Center location (5 minutes away). It's sort of tucked away and hidden. For that reason, this location is a little more quiet and calmer than other branches.

You can't beat this place for the freshest, tastiest seafood and an amazing assortment of wines. They also have a great, knowledgeable staff. Have a glass of the Caymus Conundrum or a Harpoon Old Salt Ale, which is made exclusively for Legal Sea Foods by Harpoon. Start out with the Thai Calamari, the best calamari you will ever have. Request 'rings' only, if that's your thing. Also have some clam chowder, served at the past 7 presidential inaugurations. If you like sushi the Tuna Sashimi is to die for. All of the Entrees are great, but my favorite are the Alaskan King Crab legs, braised in sherry wine with garlic. Then complete your meal with the best Boston Cream Pie in Boston!
