Ok... I'll start this off by saying that there are breakfast places that my wife likes more... and there are breakfast places that I like more. My wife is more into places with organic sprouts and other similar things mixed in... I'm more into the traditional "American breakfast" with toast, hash browns, and other things that are typically nice and greasy. As I was driving here for the first time with my wife, she asked skeptically if there was going to be anything for her to eat... I told her that I wasn't sure if there'd be anything for ME to eat...
We were both completely wrong. We ordered pancakes and the crepes... I thought the pancakes were gonna be too small to fill me up. Another wrong assumption. The perfect blend of crispy and chewy, and so thick that 3 actually filled me up. The crepes with scrambled eggs were also really tasty, though both of us had expected the eggs on the side, not the inside.
A cute little spot with flowers to buy if that's what you're into... otherwise you can enjoy looking at all of them while waiting for your meal. Very friendly staff, who unfortunately initially overcharged us by about $10, but they were quick to fix it when we pointed it out.
Definitely a better breakfast, especially when you consider that you don't have to wait for 40 minutes like you would have to at Griddle Cafe, for much better pancakes. We'll go to nearby Nick's when we're up for grease... here when we want things a little more to my wife's liking
After seeing a 4 and a half star rating of this place and realizing it was one luxurious Sunday morning walk away, I headed over the Le Petit Jardin.
My feelings are incredibly mixed on this place. The food is, just as said by many of the critiques, quite excellent. I had the fruit crepes and he had a really fluffy and delicious vegetable omelet.
The service was poor. As soon as I walked into the restaurant it started going downhill. There was only one person at a table and the employees were busy working on their morning tasks, including an owner counting out bills in the corner. And we stood there in to door, awkward, not knowing to sit or to wait while no one paid us any head. I asked if they were open. A very stressed looking employee looked up and let us know to have a seat and came over and gave us menus as soon as he could.
In the middle of our meal, a waitress showed up late and we suddenly realized this might be why we got the cold shoulder coming in. I'm normally sympathetic, but somehow our meal went downhill after she came in! She managed one water refill and my boyfriend (thirsty from the walk I made him take this morning) eyed his empty glass like a sad eyed pup. I never got a coffee refill and for $2.50 for coffee, I would have gotten more coffee if I walked down the street to Starbucks.
She wouldn't come back to our table and give us a bill. I'm not sure if there was a battle for who's table ours was... but we were the only table at the time. The bill took forever to come, I had my credit card out on the table as my subtle indicator I'm ready to pay and that poor overworked guy had to come out and give us the bill. She came and collected it and now for the first time tried to start up a conversation with us, telling us why she was late and that she had to go see her "kittens" in the alley. Mind you, this was not an apology. When she finally brought the bill back, she thanked us for coming in again, as if we were regulars she recognized.
I'll probably give this place a try again in a little while for the food. But I'll be avoiding this waitress.
"You can't be like pancakes, all exciting at first, but by the end you're f'n sick of 'em." --Mitch Hedburg
Not at Le Petit Jardin Cafe. I went in on a weekday around noon with a friend hoping that I could still partake in their breakfast menu. When we sat down we were greeted with lunch menus.
Unfortunately, I had come for the pancakes.
I asked Celine, the nice lady in charge of Le Petit, if it was possible to order breakfast items. Initially she explained that the cook had just put away all the breakfast ingredients and that I could come on Sunday for brunch which lasts until 2pm. Bummer.
My friend ordered the Avocado Burger and I ordered a Spicy Chicken Burger. It seemed I was destined for lunch and not the pancakes of Yelp lore.
That was until Celine came back to our table and said she had talked to the cook who was more than happy to whip up some pancakes for me. I was excited but even that couldn't match the excitement I felt when I took a bite out of these bad boys. You can go wrong with pancakes and finding good pancakes is about as rare as finding a guy who likes to plan dates or is into fashion. But these pancakes took the cake (pun intended). The texture is the right amount of fluffy with crispy edges that make for a sensational pancake.
The Avocado Burger wasn't half-bad either. (Pictures included!)
Having great food while being amongst a fantastic floral collection is quite an enjoyable experience. After lunch, Celine and I talked about flowers and she was extremely helpful and a very genuine person which was refreshing. She asked if the female friend I came with was my girlfriend to which I replied that we were dating. She then told me I should get her flowers as that would be the way to her heart.
In any event, Le Petit Jardin Cafe is definitely worth checking out for the food and the flowers.
This is one of my favorite nooks in all of SoCal. And it's all because of Raul, Celia, and their pancakes. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that they have the best pancakes in LA. Period. No one knows this. Sucks to be them. Let 'em stand in line at The Griddle, while I, well, eat cake.
Let me take a brief moment to wax over their love cakes. It takes a good 25 minutes for Raul to whip up these suckers, but it's all part of the process. Here's how you do it:
Start with a cup or 3 of Celia's wonderful cafe forte. Then, take a big dookie and clear up your belly for the world's best panqueques. Order a side of damn-near-perfect bacon to take this experience to the next level. When Raul arrives, maybe smiling, maybe not, brace yourself for for a life-altering experience. The pancakes are velvety on the inside, crisp on the edges. I sometimes find myself picking off the edges and dipping them right into syrup. What perplexes me is how Raul's joy cakes maintain their lovely texture, even though they are 1/2" thick. Most pancakes dry out with thickness (like the Griddle's, ahem). I can go on and on, but my point is, just try 'em. The blueberry pancakes are pretty phenomenal, too.
I come for the 'cakes, but there are some other treasures on the menu, too. Raul cooks in a style "tres francais", perhaps from his days in Paris. Omelettes are thin, simple, and focused - not overdone and overzealous. You won't find 87 different choices for your omelette, but that's not the point, is it? Focus on the basics and achieve the sublime. Raul also musters up a pretty mean crepe, again, showcasing his talent with cakes of the pan sort.
Le Petit Jardin is a mini-oasis, anchoring the pretense of Robertson Blvd. with good, old-fashioned love. I often come with my dog, and we'll sit outside in the garden, steps away from the urban din, yet worlds apart. Celia will stroll on out, smile beaming, coffee steaming. Raul may or may not come out, and you'll mistake him as stern. But suddenly, he'll smile so brightly and genuinely, it will jar you. This is all part of the charm. Marvel at the roses, as large as my head, and wonder how Raul and Celia manage a cafe and florist shop simultaneously. Perhaps this is why the service is slow (again, tres French), but it doesn't really matter. Le Petit Jardin is the product of love. Raul + Celia will slowly melt your heart...and the butter on your pancakes.
What a great place! The food was simple, reasonably priced, and fabulous. (I had the angel-hair pasta and the avocado appetizer.)
The service was excellent. It's obvious that the people who work here really care and put love into what they do. I wish they served wild fish. I'd be willing to pay more for that.
I love this place for a nice, relaxing weekend morning bite. It's within walking distance to my gf's place and right across the street from petco (so the dog always gets a new treat when we go there). I used to live out in this area and my commute took me right past this place, but for whatever reason i never got the opportunity to eat or get flowers here - man was i missing out.
Food: Their food is good. I would classify it as something a gourmet chef might make at home (my sister is a gourmet chef... so yeah). It's not michelin star worthy or anything, but the ambiance with the flowers and the down-to-earth service make it a great place to chill out and sip on some tea while smelling the flowers. Last time we went there, they were kind enough to make specialty orders (wasn't anything too elaborate, but nice to know they make an effort to please their customers)
Flowers: I've frequented here several times for flowers and what they keep always seems to be fresh and pretty. They have a good selection, and are great and friendly about picking out flowers, making custom arrangements, and giving some womanly advice. They are also open pretty late for a flower shop (which, believe me, comes in damn handy)
The only negatives i would point out about this place is -
1. the parking or lack thereof (street parking it is)
2. robertson can be a busy street, and thought the outside area is somewhat walled by plants and flowers, it doesn't kill all the traffic zooming up and down the blvd.
Conc: great date place, good food, great flowershop!
All the charm of a cozy little French cafe without the language barrier, this little European cafe off of Robertson is very much like a shop you'd find in a quaint village. The staff is fantastic and goes out of their way to make the place feel personal for each patron. Whether you're there for the flowers or the fantastic food, you should come prepare to relax, chill and spend some time soaking in some life. Unlike most LA restaurants, you might hear a glimpse of intelligent conversation or at least a discussion of something other than some whining idiot's complaining about his/her life.
The food is great and feel very unique to the place. If you judge a place solely on the decor, this place is deceptive. They take very good care of their offerings and the prices are very reasonable. The flowers and plants add a sense of uniqueness to the place and ordering a bouquet is to set in motion an artistic endeavor by Celine. Definitely a place that has much love from the locals and those in the know of a good bite, great hospitality, and amazing florists.
I wouldn't have written this review since it's a place special to many who know of it and we'd all loathe to see it crowded and full of the Beverly Hills "Coffee Bean" crowd. If you don't know about them, they're basically loitering-trust fund-hippies who use too much cologne, are terrible at parking their Bentleys, talk on their phone while they eat, and basically using up air that could otherwise be productive. But, like most restaurants in this economy, I want to see the place make it through this recession and maybe even find some worthy patrons.
I had a lovely lunch for one in the beautiful garden patio of Le Petit Jardin. The owners are the only two full time staff, so they work their butts off during the lunchtime rush. I ordered a sandwich that requires a homemade sauce--which they make to order! as well as a complicated grilling and toasting process. It too a while to get my food, but it was well worth the wait!
The lack of speediness and the fact that there are not any organic or free range options are the only reasons that this beautiful cafe didnt get 5 stars!~
I've only eaten here once. I had a burger that was out of this world.
The five stars are really for the flowers.
My grandmother and aunts live close to Le Petite Jardin. When I am invited to various family occasions and dinners, I will often stop in here to get them flowers.
Now, I'm a quintessential guy. I used to just stop into a Ralph's market and look for something in my price range and buy it. I do not know how to make my own bouquet. I do not know flowers at all. The only skills in color coordination that I have is not mixing my stripes and plaids.
What happens is that I come in and talk with the people who run the place. They know my folks, my aunts and my grandmother. We make small talk and then I let them know how much money I am willing to spend. Then I am given a gigantic gorgeous beautiful bouquet.
Then I pass that bouquet to my aunts and grandmother who will then think that I am the greatest nephew/grandson ever!
(I'll never buy flowers from Ralph's market again!)
The main thing I remember about this place is the waitress who kept returning to our table and asking me personal questions. She also created an awkward moment when she asked my male friend if I was his girlfriend; and after he said I wasn't she continued to proclaim that we make a grand couple and should definitely consider it. Wtf?!
I ate their gargantuan hamburger, not because I think French people make the best burgers but just because I was really craving one all day. It was delicious but not especially better than others I've tried. If my friend had suggested we go to In 'N' Out that day, knowing how this burger would've tasted, I would've been totally fine with In 'N' Out. At least there you only spend about two bucks and nobody tries to set you up.
The flowers and decor do make this a great date place. I would recommend Le Petit for a guy who wants to take a girl out to a nice, cozy dinner for a special occasion who's most likely to forget a gift - since he can conveniently purchase one right there and pretend it was all planned out. Slick!
I have been going to Le Petit Jardin for the past four years and I find this small bistro one of the finest in Los Angeles. The food is always consistant and very fresh, being one of my favorites The ALmond Trout.
Because is a family run restaurant expect a slower service, they don't rush you, they want you to enjoy your meal. I certainly enjoy mine everytime.
been coming here for years. not sure why i haven't reviewed it til now.
awesome little place. food, flowers, assorted little weird trinkets and cards for gifts...
the owners are super cool. their daughter works there as well. they have an incredible memory. after my first time going they knew my name, what i ordered and would reccomend things to try.
their burger is delicious! sauteed mushrooms, blue cheese crumbles. it's $12 but i think it's worth it.
i've also tried their pastas which have all been good.
the sandwich i usually order is turkey with bacon and avacado. excellent.
i've purchased flowers here before as well. always fresh and the owner will hook you up if you're nice.
there's a little pation outside to sit in. with all the plants and flowers around it smells awesome.
i've seen people bring in their own bottles of wine, but i'm not sure if they charge a corkage fee.
i suggest putting a few bucks in the tip jar on the counter, as they very much appreciate it and will be even friendlier next time you go.
you may want to call before you go to make sure that they are indeed open. they keep somewhat strange hours and close the place from around 2-5, i believe to prep for dinner service. sometimes they just don't open at all. i guess it's cause they only have 3 people on the staff.
i highly advise giving this place a try.
The flowers are beautiful, but I'm here to write about the food and ambience. The food, especially the sauces, are delicious. Try the sole meuniere, my favorite thing on the menu. It's good French food at a very reasonable price, which you enjoy surrounded by the flowers of the flower shop. But even better, nice quiet ambience with no pretense, no lines, no attitude. I was looking for a place like this in LA and found it. Why isn't it more crowded? It' soooo much better than 99% of the restaurants out there. Go for a nice quiet meal, relax and enjoy.
I took my doggy here for a little Easter brunch. Had the crepes with fresh fruit and a coffee. The crepes were perfectly made and the fruit was ripe and juicy. The owner was very sweet to my Frenchie, Violet and the other diners didn't seem to have a problem with her snuffling around.
Quite a few creepy, weirdo, zombie-looking people wandered by and a couple actually came in and petted the dog. That was the only negative, well, that and the fact that taggers came and tagged the wall across the street while I was eating. That was really sad and aggravating and the owners of the restaurant were really upset. Aside from those things, it was a very pleasant morning and I'll definitely be trying this place again.
Been here for brunch and dinner.
The food is delicious. If you order the Eggs Benedict, be sure to order some extra potatoes on the side. These are the best breakfast potatoes I've ever had.
I've had Chicken Marsala for dinner - yummy as well.
But the HIGHLIGHT of Le Petit Jardin has to be the bread pudding. $6 for a chunk of warm, carmel-y goodness with raisins and served with whipped cream on the side. I order this every time I come here.
Prices are reasonable, the place is cute, and the owners are nice. Come and give your local restaurant a boost!
My wife and I stopped by here last night. We're new in the area, (just moved off bedford two months ago), and we'd seen this place driving to the freeway a bunch of time. Finally last night we had already eaten but we were up for trying some desert at a new place in the neighborhood.
It was a bit late, and when we stepped in the door the lady at the counter was super apologetic and said they were closing, but the chef came out and told us to have a seat and he'd make some something for us. They were very nice.
We ordered a tea for me, coffee for the wife, and we both split the crepe with ice cream and chocolate syrup. It was delicious and I can't wait to go back and try their food. This seems like a great place to bring the dog and have a light brunch sometime. Very nice.
Well I guess a quick sentence summarizes this place.
Go and enjoy a well made meal and awesome service.
To boot, if you want to pick up lunch after work and pick up some flowers, therefore, scoring some brownie points with 'yer sweetie well what other place can compete?
All in all, this place, even without the flower shop, is all around awesome. chat with the waiter, his name is Wade. very funny and attentive.
My husband and I have been coming to Le Petite Jardin since we moved into the neighborhood about 2 years ago. It is such a find in a neighborhood that does not have great food options in walking distance. The food is excellent. The service is friendly, and the beautiful flowers in the shop make it smell wonderful.
We normally walk here with our dog for brunch, and as you would expect from a good Parisian cafe, we can sit with our dog outside in the their little patio area. Their croque-monsieur is excellent and a great change of pace from eggs benedict for brunch. Their sandwiches and salads are also fantastic. The bread for the club sandwich is a good, crusty french roll. The pommes frites are fried nice and golden.
I hope more people find this family run restaurant that deserves to stay in the neighborhood for a long, long time.
Keep in mind the 2 *s are for I've experienced better.
I just moved here and found the restaurant while going to Petco. I waited a whole month to try it out though (had no one to go with :-( ). I was kinda disappointed.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the flower shop in the restaurant. Amazing idea! And, I love the European feel to it. It's a restaurant that you can go to alone and just sit with your dog and a book. Fantastic!! And the lady there is very sweet and friendly!
But, the food...I love brunch. I normally get the fruit crepe at Stack's in Northern California and I love it. Here, not so good. I guess I'm used to the straberries, blueberries, and bananas with yogurt. Here, they stick melon with plenty of bluberries (go antioxidants!) and whipped cream. I got mine without the whipped cream, cause that's just not a breakfast food to me. This dish left me wanting more...
Ambiance Ok, a bit too empty, price too high for the food you are getting. Food is OK, but nothing earth shattering or even close to it. Too much salt and butter does not always make it more tasty.
This might also be known as Le Petit Jardin, I'm not completely sure. This is a florist shop and French cafe and I can't speak for the food, but I rate the flowers highly. I'd usually swing by to pick up a bouquet and tell the woman I presume to be the owner how much I was looking to spend (usually $20-25) and if I had any overall flower or color preferences. She'd make a beautiful bouquet every time, and she even seemed to have a hard time stopping adding flowers. Since I've moved it's not as easy to hit on the way home anymore, but I would still be more inclined to come here than Rita Flora.
I guess I'm the 1st to comment on their food. I live a few blocks away and tried this place when I moved in last summer. It's a very small french restuarant/flower shop. The owners are very friendly and warm. I ordered a burger and a salad- both were great! I brought my mom and we befriended the party of regulars next to us who go every Tuesday night and bring several bottles of wine to taste- as there is no corkage fee here. They generously shared their wine with us and one woman even gave me her phone number to call her if I ever needed anything- what a peach! I haven't been back, but that's no reflection on this cute restaurant- more just my insatiable cravings for sushi, which is usually what I go out for. I'd like to go here for brunch sometime soon- the menu looked delicious.
the owner of this place's name is celine. she is a real friendly lady and her spot is really nice. its a flower shop and a cafe, and unlike other places, their open 9-10pm every day, so easy to pick up some flowers after work for working stiffs like me. the order i placed looked great, albeit i know nothing about flowers. i ate at the cafe and the food was really good, like the french dip wasn't all dry like most places, ahem philippe's. fresh flowers on every table, a great date spot, feels like a hidden bed and breakfast homey feel. kudos to celine and she told me that my flowers will be the best around and i believe it.
