Pesto chicken panini was good and their fries are like fat chips. Their bread is super crusty on the outside and super soft inside. I could eat just that with butter and I'd be happy.

My husband had the salmon burger. It was good. A little plain but good.

Chicken noodle soup was good. It's made with the skinny little noodles which I love. Small pieces so great for little kids.

Stopped by with my mom for a quick lunch after shopping. The place was empty so we had the luxury of choosing where we wanted to people-watch from.

Le Diplomate is usually known for their fresh, hot baguettes that they serve you at the beginning at the meal. Nope. Ours was disappointingly cold. We had to ask them to warm them, which they were glad to do.

We ordered the lasagna special and a croque monsieur to share. Due to having walked a smidgen of a mile around the mall, we were pretty famished. Waited for our food....and waited....and waited.  Unbelievably slow service. I was hoping the food would make up for my stomach continuously churning.

Unfortunately, the food wasn't stellar either. The croque monsieur was very blah, and so was the lasagna. I apologize for not having a more descriptive adjective, but it sure does fit.

Ah well, at least the baguettes (when warm) are still great with lots of butter.

The bread has a nice soft, chewy center, but I don't particularly like the tomato spread they accompany with it for free. And it doesn't look appetizing visually to me. Hey, visual stimulation is like foreplay for food too. =P

I ordered the spinach pasta. It was flavorful, but too salty. Not inedible salty, but It was bordering inedible. I didn't feel like returning it.

On a previous occasion I've had the salmon salad. That was pretty good.

    The coffee was okay.

The service was excellent without being too intrusive throughout the meal. Food came out quickly.

Came here due to Nordstom Cafe being too busy during lunch rush hour, but I prefer Nordstrom's.

The diplomate cafe is a hidden little gem in the brea mall. I actually work in this mall, so I come here to eat a little too often. Sometimes my managers will bring me here for lunch, so that's always exciting. The staff is really friendly, and the service is always great. A few of my favorites off the menu are the lasagna, turkey burger, savory mushroom crepe, and their chicken burgers. I love trying new things here, because they have a pretty big menu. Come shop at the mall, and afterwards, come unwind with a glass of wine, or 3 in this little French cafe.

I only come here for the bread and dip. Other than that, the food is gross and the servers are not very friendly. I don't get why they need the electronic device to take orders... waste of time. Cute seating on the outside of the restaurant though.

It's a quaint little cafe right in the Brea mall.  After a couple hours of shopping we were hungry.  Luckily, we didn't wait long and they gave free bread.  I had the Salmon Salad which was delicious and surprisingly fulfilling.

I wouldn't go out of my way to go eat here, but next time I'm in the mall I'd probably eat here again.

My body can be sustained on the iced tea and bread and butter here alone. I've witnessed girls order bread and iced tea and make a meal of it. The pressed sandwiches are pretty good here and so is the Italian Wedding soup when they have it. The service is usually pretty good and the food comes out fast.

I really want to like this place more, but my California Connection sandwich on croissant with cottage fries was really mediocre.
The avocado in the sandwich was really unripe and hard. The cottage fries were circular potato things that were frankly kind of gross. They had so obviously been frozen and then stuck in an oven. ): They were kind of crunchy but had no flavor and they had air pockets in them--pretty unappetizing.
I love fries, so ordering "cottage fries" and getting circular disasters was pretty disappointing.
    On the other hand:
    1. my boyfriend's eggplant sandwich was good, and the humus it came with was also good
    2. it has a nice interior and a clean bathroom
    3. it has a nice location
and 4. the service was wonderful.
I would recommend this place as a nice sit down place inside the brea mall, but I would avoid the cottage fries.

From all the mix reviews i had my doubts on this place but to follow my motto "you never know unless you try it" i decided to drop by this place last weekend.

    Friday 7/15
It was mid day and their was only 2-3 tables taken.  The service was good maybe due to less diners but i found was really attentive.

    Food:
"Le Diplomate Cafe special Crepe" with Chicken
    "Passion Ice Tea"

The food came with complimentary bread, butter, and house olive oil and tomato.  The bread and spread was a nice touch.  Then came out the crepe with side of fruit.  The crepe was delicious but was very heavy with the Alfredo sauce that i only finish half.

Came back with the BF because we had to pick up more stuff at nordstorm due the anniversary sale -_-* boy did that place drive us broke ahaha anyways...

    Boyfriend Food:
    Chardonnay Salmon or something
    Imported beer from Canada

    Me:
    Seafood Linguine
Passion Ice tea ( I like the tea)

The bf salmon was cooked to perfection and he enjoyed it really well.  Oh if you like dark beer like my bf ask for that canadian beer they carry it will hit the spot because he was a bit tipsy after the first bottle -__-*

My seafood Linguine was good but i wish it had more favor in the sauce.  The portion was huge with the right amt of seafood so no complaint but it just was not that memorable

So you may be asking and thinking to yourself.
    "hehhh?"  "where??" "whatttt???"

Because I totally did. Got invited here for a mini dinner with a good friend of mine, It went something like this:

Him: "lets go to Le Diplomate Cafe"
    A: "hehhh?"
    Him: "in Brea...."
    A: "whereee???"
    Him: "Brea mall? near Nrdstrm"
A: "whattt?? that one?? where people can pass by us while we eat??"
    Him: "-_-"

    Anyway,

So FREE opening bread room temperature was soft. They gave lots of butter, and they have the *I don't wanna say salsa* but the tomatoes salsa look alike. lol.

I got the chicken penne (not the spicy one), the sauce was thick and creamy the chicken was okay.

My friend got the panini thingy I forgot which one, but its true.. as rumor has it, their fries look like poker chips!!! I likey!!!

But all and all, if I have to choose this and CPK chicken tequila pasta (as far as in Brea mall for almost the same price) I'd probably choose CPK. Sorry! But maybe here, for the date atmosphere :)

I was feeling a little adventurous and ordered the BRIE, AVOCADO & APPLE PANNINI at Le Diplomate Cafe and boy, was that a mistake.

The combination intrigued me but the flavors didn't blend well together and were a complete disaster. Totally inedible & just plain strange

a french inspired cafe in brea? great idea, the execution is very good as well.

first of all, you will notice the decor. street lamps in the restaurant... completely genius. the food is excellent. salmon sandwich is something i actually copy, the portabella roast beef sandwich is earthy and rich, the new croque-monsieur adds avocado to a french standard. onion soup is classic and full of substance. i rarely have room for dessert, but i've heard it's great.

service and pricing is on point.

dernier mot? be diplomatic and pay them a visit. it's much better than the food court stuff and a very very viable alternative to the nordstrom cafe, which is on the 3rd floor of nordstorm... bon appetit!

After doing some shopping, I came here on a Friday evening and my party was seating quickly.  I love restaurants that offer free unlimited bread baskets!  The bread came with the usual butter and some tomato/basil concoction that went great with the bread.  I ordered the spicy chicken penne and I loved it.  It wasn't that spicy but the flavor of the sauce was to my liking.  The service here was pretty good.

A better alternative to mall court food if you're willing to spend a couple of dollars more to sit down in an albeit cozy cafe and get waiter service.  Had the tuna melt sandwich with the cottage fries and a bowl of french onion soup.  I love french onion soup and my mom always made it for dinner every time we ate steaks - ahhh fond childhood memories.  This was okay and just a bit under average tasting, but passable for my standards.  The tunamelt was pretty good and I'm thinking they used albacore tuna since it had a mild flavor and it was lighter or "whiter" in color.  The fries, though decent and crispy, are much better than the fruit.  Their fruit was unripe and had no sweet flavor; all bland and tasteless from the honeydew, to the strawberry and watermelon.  Didn't eat the cantaloupe.

Le Diplomat Café is a quaint restaurant inside the ever busy Brea Mall.  I give my compliments to the owner(s) for trying to re-create a true café experience within the confines of this brick and mortar behemoth.  A large French mural stretches the expanse of the restaurant, portraying an image of happy diners eating casually outdoors on a bright, sunny day.  A prop door and window give off the impression that you're on the outside looking in and some cleverly inserted street lamp posts throughout the restaurant add to the illusion.

As for the menu, I'm not certain as to what decidedly makes this place French (assuming that is the theme, given the name).  Most of the items are your typical American staples, including sandwiches, salads, pastas, and pizzas.  It's all very good mind you, just not quite consistent with theme, except for the baguette slices served in the bread basket.

Though for what it does, the restaurant does well.  The seafood linguini is richly flavored and topped off with many a succulent crustacean.  The eggplant sandwich is scrumptiously prepared with the appropriate amount of firmness and dabbles of feta cheese to add taste and contrast.  I like that the kitchen is open air so you can see the cooks honestly hard at work preparing your food and making sure everything is to satisfaction.

Nice place to stop for lunch after some serious shopping at Brea Mall.

To top it off, it is located by Nordstrom, so we didn't have to walk too far :o)

Service was surprisingly fast, despite our visit during the lunch rush hour.

There were 3 of us, so we shared our dishes:

Nice bread basket with a yummy bruschetta style tomato topping..lotsa garlic and basil.  mmmm.  The french baguette is soooooo good.  Even at room temp and not toasted, it was yuuuummy!  It had a nice scent of a French bakery.

Shrimp and Crab Ceviche - with cucumber, tomato, avocado, onion, serrano chili, cilantro, and citrus zing.  Served with tortilla chips.  Love the citrus dressing.  It was fresh and limey, lemony.  Cool treat for a warm day in So Cal.  Marries well with the Tortilla chips.

Fattouche Salad - Romain lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, mint, radish, bell peppers, red onions, and toasted pita bread, tossed with traditional Fattouche dressing.  Great veggie dish.

Spicy Penne with Chicken - Penne pasta, grilled chicken, mushrooms and chopped tomatoes all tossed in a Cajun-Alfredo sauce. - This is nice. When I want to carb up, this is it...nice flavor all around.  Every bite was well coated with the yummy spicy sauce.

    Gotta go, back to shopping!

I was expecting something like Le Diplomate in Irvine. Boy, was I surprised (in a good way)!

Figure I would give this place a try and boy, I was really freaking impressed. Their tomato thing with their bread -- like freaking cocaine. You can't and won't stop asking for more. Really.

I got the Salmon Sandwich -- decent... It's just fish in a sandwich. Okay, my bad. Won't get that next time.

But I ate my girlfriend's FRENCH CONNECTION because we went halfsies. My god, it was SO FREAKING AWESOME. The brie was so soft, the roast beef was tender and it was AMAZING. Got their fries -- really unique, they're like thick potato chips but soft. Like little poker chips.

All in all, $30 for two people -- but we had left overs (a whole sandwich aka my salmon sandwich) too so good enough for dinner.

Please keep in mind, rarely give out 5 stars. I'd give this a 4.5. I wish the service would have been better. I WANT MORE TOMATO STUFF SO BAD.

this is one of my favorite lunch spots @ brea mall...but today was a FAIL... ULTIMATE FAIL :(

came in with my mama to have lunch...it wasn't too packed, but automatically i realized that there was only one waiter...which sometimes can lead to hungry ashley being very grumpy lol

but my mom wanted to eat here so i gave in...we got seated and waited and waited...and waited...*hungry**thirsty**bored* and waited *thank god for their free wifi...what?! i need a PW...DAMN* and finally after 15 minutes our waiter came by we ordered right away: i got the chicken papaya salad (with onions) with a cup of french onion soup and my mom got the seafood linguini (with spinach linguini) and we both got water (i never say when i order water...but this water was funky...which isn't too pleasant. thank god we had bottle water with us lol) we got our complimentary bread with the tomato dip (feta cheese, olive oil, basil, garlic, vinegar...delicious so freaking delicious mmmm) and softened butter...mmmm buttttterrrrr i wanted more tomato dip, but after asking a few times i kinda got annoyed...but finally got it from the bus boy

so the soup came out within 5 mins and i love the french onion soup here...but man it was soooo salty and the onions weren't caramelized and soft...WHAT HAPPENED LE DIPLOMATE CAFE?! after another 10 minutes our meal came out. my meal was great...but then i saw the chicken and some parts were awkwardly pink...i wanted to tell the waiter, but i couldn't flag him down so i just discarded it. my moms pasta was the SHIETTT mmmm the pasta was perfectly cooked and there was pleasantly a lot of seafood. the sauce was perfect and not too overwhelming. after we ate we wanted to get our bill so we can go shop, but man...it took another 15+ mins to flag him down. i know it's not the waiters fault i mean lunch hour, during spring break, 1 waiter?! commonnnnn

will i come back?! honestly i was disappointed in my regular dishes and honestly the soup is what i come for...after this experience i'd rather find another place to get my french onion soup fix...if you're at the mall and you're looking for a sit down with good food i would check this place out...but if there's only 1 server TURN AROUND!

Fine dining at a mall?  My initial expectations were that Le Diplomate only tried to look and act the part.  But somehow I became convinced that a bit of wine-tasting would take the edge off shopping, and I am so glad that I did!

First off, the bread and bruschetta were amazing.  That and some pinot grigio alone could have been my dinner.  But I had already ordered the ceviche and chips, so I had to save room for that.  I loved the ceviche and the fresh chips.  The ceviche had lots of avocado, less shrimp and more crab, which is perfect for me since I'm not a big fan of shrimp.  It was a good sized portioned appetizer that I was able to share with a friend.

Being so full from the bread, wine and ceviche, I ordered a salad as an entree which I split with a friend.  The Cobb salad left me less impressed, and wanting more ceviche.  The dressing was too tart for me and overall-I've had better.

I was too full for dessert, but would definitely come back again to try it!

Le Diplomate is reasonably-priced fine dining that's been tucked conveniently in the mall.  Great service and great food!

4.5 rating. Had a lunch special here today - half a panini sandwich and soup of the day. There were various choices for the sandwich, I chose the chicken and garlic. It is a very popular choice over at the Le Diplomate Cafe in Irvine and I thought I would try it here. The soup for the day was chicken gumbo.

They brought out french bread and butter. It was good but I have to admit I prefer Vie de France's french bread. Le Diplomate's sandwiches, on the other hand, are better. The chicken and garlic sandwich is excellent, I think the subtle amount of garlic they use is just the right amount. I can understand why this sandwich receives many positive mentions in Yelp reviews. The chicken gumbo soup was on the salty side but still tasty. The special cost $5.99 plus tax and tip.

Service was helpful and efficient here.

I give this place 3.5 stars.

For the second time this month, I've eaten at a place inside of a mall. Kinda weird, but... what the hey.

Le Diplomate has been around for a long time. When I used to work in the Brea Mall as a freshman in college, this was always the fancy place across the way that I couldn't afford.

Now more within my budget, I'm pleased to report that Le Diplomate has stood strong all these years despite it's wacky location due to the more-than-decent food and friendly service.

Definitely more of a lunch spot, and they serve complimentary baguettes. The bread is warm and soft. I had an excellent spinach salad and some french onion soup- both were excellent. My friend had a croissant club sandwich, and it looked pretty hearty. Our total bill was about $31 before tip- so be sure to factor that into your shopping budget if you are planning to spend the day at the mall!

The Good: It's a cute little restaurant located inside the mall.  Not too many crowds pass by, so it doesn't get that awkward.  The staff are nice and helpful, even letting us pick a new appetizer when we were dissatisfied with the first choice.  The Italian dishes were just par in my book, but they were worth the price.

The Bad: There was only one server during dinner, so we had to wait a while for our order to be taken.

    Try: Spinach Linguini, Meat Lasagna

Don't Try: Chicken Port Pate.  This was the first appetizer we ordered, and we took two bites and couldn't eat anymore.  Gross. :(

This is a nice little Italian restaurant in the mall.  The main reason why I go to this place is that complimentary baguette bread they give you when you dine-in.  It's really good, the crust is crispy and real soft inside, my sister who's living in Paris says it's comparable to the bread she eats in Paris.
The decor is rather nice and the waitress are rather friendly.  The pastas are pretty good and the portions are filling.

Downgraded.  The service is pretty slow here.  The bread isn't as good anymore.  The pastas are good but it's more actual pasta than other ingredients (like seafood, vegetables).

A friend took me here for my post birthday lunch.

The highly praised baguette was as good as everyone yelped it would be and more. Love the garlicky tomatoey basil goodness they call a dip. I could imagine living on their baguette and dip. Although with so much garlic, only my Korean friends will be able to tolerate me..

I also had onion soup which was tasty but a tad too salty. The soup temperature was barely warm so I didn't like that at all. Also my onion soup didn't came out looking as pretty and appetizing as Ryan N.'s picture. Boo to that. :( My eggplant sandwich didn't taste anything like I expected. It was a little too gooey. All their sandwiches comes in their house French baguette.

Overall experience was pleasant but it was more because of who I was with rather than the food.

A restaurant that's actually good in a mall? Heh. That's like saying you found a REALLY good McDonalds. I had to see, yet try, for myself if such a place exists.

Making my maiden voyage to Brea mall. I wasn't really impressed with the mall. So being that the mall was already a  semi disappointment. I wouldn't expect  much from the restaurant as well. Boy was I wrong.

The menu had an extensive list of salads, soups, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, fish, and meats! The decor of the place made you feel like you traveled to some European restaurant / cafe.

After going through the menu a couple times I finally went with the following :

    - CHEESY! ONIONY Goodness!

    | * Spinach Pasta [ http://static.px.yelp.... ]
    - My friend's Spinach Pasta was a bit on the doughy side. I think the dish could have been a little better.

    - I had the Pizza and it was GOOD!

The Service was pretty good. I mean the place was pretty empty. Nevertheless he was attentive. I think Le Diplomate has resurrected my thoughts that a restaurant can be good in a mall. But I'm still going to be weary.

    Terrible Service but Great Food.

Baguettes are TDF along with topping or even the butter.  Sandwiches, Soups, Salads, Pasta's and Dinner items have all been tasty.  I personally love their Cobb Salad, Garlic Chicken Sandwich (deadly but oh so tasty!) and yummy hummus.

The only reason that I don't give 5 is because of their slow service.  Although I must say, sometimes we do luck out and get a good waiter or waitress but that is few and far between.

Also, a few years back, there was this creepy guy with a long pony tail in leather pants that hung out there - EEEWWW!.  Don't know if he was a host, owner or what!  But whenever he was there they played HORRID music that was WAY TOO LOUD!  Kinda creepy jungle theme type - YUCK!!!  Haven't seen him there in a while so I hope he's only working behind the scenes now...

Bottom Line:  Pay your servers what they deserve and you'll have fantastic luck with quality people and more business than you can imagine.

Le Diplomat Cafe is awesome. I have never had bad service, and I have never had to wait for a table here, as there is plenty of seating.

They start you off with delicious fresh bread, butter, and a tiny little dish of bruschetta. They really should give you more of that.

Their French Onion Soup is amazing. Their Caesar Salad is very good also.

I always order the Spinach Pasta, which as far as i'm concerned, is perfect. It's spinach linguine with just the right amount of olive oil, garlic, basil, tomatoes, and feta cheese. It's not too saucy, and it is never dry. It is just perfect.

I know I have tried other things here, and it has all been good, but I always come back to my Spinach Pasta. Yum.

They really should open more locations - they would make a killing!

    BEST BAGUETTE ever!
You get it free when you're dining there or it's about ~$3 if you want to just order one togo.
I get hungry when I shop, so I just stop by and buy a baguette...it takes about 5min b/c they actually throw it in the oven so it gets nice and toasty!!!
Their pasta dishes are prettty good too and I do agree with some of the reviews regarding the service.
Sometimes service is really slow b/c they only have 1 or 2 servers.

There is not 1 single Italian place I can think of around there that is semi decent...
Maybe Pane e vino (but not really good as the one in la) and there used to be a place called Papa Mio's across the mall(but now it's called something else and wasn't the same).

I come here quite often and I love the food!  The bread, butter, and tomato spread tastes so fresh, all the time.

I used to always get the turkey burger, which I love, served open face with the freshest ingredients - onions, cheese, tomato, lettuce.  I like the french fries, which are tiny round rigged pieces, which always are moist and flavorful.

The other day I had the chicken parmagean pasta, which was so delicious.  It was huge, and I had plenty for lunch the next day.

I give this place 5 stars because I have been here so many times, and I am always happy.  My appetite is satisfied and the food has all sorts of different flavor.

First of all, the bread is amazing. A perfect baguette that's crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I would have made a meal from the baguette, bruschetta, and a glass of wine, but I ordered the Portobello Cajun-Salmon Salad (portobello mushrooms, bell peppers, and red onions all grilled and then joined with a Cajun-style broiled salmon filet and fresh tomatoes. Served with our house Cabernet-Vinaigrette). The grilled veggies and salmon had so much flavor that I didn't really need the cabernet-vinaigrette. The only suggestion I would have for the dish is more portabello mushroom - they were so yummy! This restaurant is a hidden gem inside the Brea Mall.

Okay, the food here is pretty good.  Strike that, the food here is pretty awesome!  The baguettes are to die for (soft, fluffy specimens of bread perfection).  The tomato topping is basil and some sort of cheese and blends perfectly with the bread and butter...note that I haven't even gotten to my entree yet.  The bread is that bomb!

I got the turkey burger and the patty was just the right amount of season and juices.  The fresh fruit was a bit mushy but other than that, I don't have any complaints about the food!  My friend had the cajun ahi tacos and she said it was pretty good too.  Service was super attentive given the lunch-time rush.

Le Diplomate Cafe has the BEST baguettes ever! Seriously, I would give them a billion stars for their baguettes if I could. I am salivating just thinking about the crisp, crusty exterior and the soft as a fluffy cloud insides. I eat as much bread with yummy tomato topping as I can when I'm there and then I usually get a baguette to take home with me too!

Sometimes even after all that bread, I will get a sandwich made on more bread! All of their sandwiches are excellent and come with your choice of fruit, home fries or hummus. I don't like fruit and I'm not a big fan of home fries (I'd rather have bad for you deep fried skinny french fries), so I usually get the hummus. The hummus is good, but they don't give you anything to go with it! Now I usually eat hummus as a dip for veggies, crackers whatever, so it's kind of weird to eat spoonfuls of it, but it's still tasty. If I'm feeling like I need something healthy I usually go with the tabbouleh with chicken. Nice tart and parsley-y.

The service here is great and it's a nice spot for lunch or dinner. This is my go-to spot whenever I'm at the Brea Mall.

My friend and I stopped here to get some coffee - we didn't realize it was like, a restaurant, until we sat down and looked at the menu. The entrees looked appetizing but we'd already had lunch, and only had room for a slice of the delicious White Chocolate Truffle/Raspberry Cheesecake.

    Service was exemplary.

But! The hot chocolate is not as chocolate-y as a "real" French chocolat drink would be, and for that they get one less star. Dommage!

Soooo yummy.  You can sit in the mall hallway (sounds odd but it's really great) and people watch while you sip on your i. tea and dip your fresh bread in oil and vinegar.  I've tried too many dishes and they're all just as great as the one before.

    Yummo...recommended!
