Review from Julie H.
VERY bummed out that this place is closed down (permanently?) because of the extensive construction needed in the area.
This was one of the only places that I would drive into Lawrence for- and brave the CRAZY drivers!!
Good hot dogs (but better years ago when they used ESSEM)- I believe that their most recent dogs were Kayem's.
My dad used to tell me they tasted so good because they dipped the hot dogs into the dirty merrimack river water. I still half believe him!!
Couldn't beat the hotdog special. I will miss this landmark of my life. -

I'll keep this simple. These are the best hot dogs you will ever have.
Period.
Please beware- this is not a restaurant. It's nothing more than a sidewalk shack. There are no seats (though there are benches nearby) and it's closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Get the dog with the works, and sprinkle on a little celery salt.
Everything from the buns to the meat are made locally- so savor and enjoy a truly unique local experience straight out of 1956. -

According to the age old saying- If you are going to do something Bad....Do it GOOD.
Some people grill their dogs- some boil, some steam- Lawtons fries them in oil right before your eyes in their landmark shack in downtown Lawrence.
I recommend getting them with the soft sauteed onions on the bottom- and relish as that offsets some of the grease. Your dogs will be served of course, in a box on top of french fries.
The landmark building has always cracked me up- count on New England to take a hot dog stand and have to build a roof over it and enclose it with walls- they have left the sidewalk however- in tact.
Warning- Do not run, swim, or work out, for at least a day after enjoying. -

CLOSED ON SUNDAYS & MONDAYS
I was going to eat here, based on Yelp's recommendations, but today is Monday and Lawton's is closed. Nice small place with 20 minute parking outside.
So, today is Thursday and I'm driving back through town. I stopped by and indeed, Lawton's was open. So, now parking is a bit difficult. It's around 3 pm in the afternoon on a Thursday and there's a line outside this place. They have two doors to enter -- actually, one to enter and one to exit. No seats -- outdoor seating is benches by an old canal. Just a counter. I had one with the works and another with kraut MO. Great dogs -- crunchy. I'm a fan. While I was in line, a family screwed up on their order for 8 to go and needed another two. Lawtons gave them two more (what was going to be my order) on the house. Very friendly staff. You get faster service if you call ahead. -

You have to go to Lawton's at least once - just for its old timeyness and to say you've tried it. But really - it isn't good. I love greasy junk food now and then, but these dogs were just greasy tasteless dogs and the fries were limp and greasy too.
The building is cool and worth the price (money and gastric distress) just to hang out it in for a bit.
Look - it used to have an evil twin in California! http://www.yelp.com/bi... -

This authentic hole-in-the-wall box car sits right on the canal in Lawrence. It's got the most amazing lobster rolls anywhere at an unbeatable price. I dream of these rolls. No restaurant, even in seaport towns, has ever come close to beating them. I hear the also have good hot dogs but have never tried them.
Come in for lunch, order your meal and sit on a bench overlooking the canal to eat. There is barely any standing room in the box car so this is nothing fancy, but this gem of a place is always on the top of my places to eat list. -

Ah, Lawton's by the Sea! The only thing better then a hot dog is a hot dog fried in oil (or, as they say in Jersey, rippers). I can't put into words how good these dogs are. One day a friend and I took a drive to get some good Merrimack Valley junk food and ended up here TWICE! I hear the lobster roll rocks but for me it's all about the dogs. Oh, and watch out for that hydrant!!

I don't live in MA anymore, but this place is legendary for friend hot dogs. I got a lobster roll last year, and it was amazing as well. Can't wait for this place to reopen in the summer... though the new location won't be as convenient!

Review from Brian D.
yup, this place is historic you can tell that by the long line of greasy old geezers sitting in their cars out front of this take out only hot dog and fish fry joint. please dont ask me why i was in Lawrence, but i was, and i saw the signs for Lawton's hot dog shack and i had to react. I pulled over and went in, thank god it's cheap because they dont take cards and i only had a few bucks. this was enough for a chili cheese dog and a order of onion rings. the rings were hand cut and battered and really good, the dog was big but pretty meh on the flavor scale. the chili was bad at best and it was way under cheesed. aside from that, the surly staff and colorful locals were worth the stop. i'd hit this joint again but wouldn't make a trip all the way up to l-town just to do so.

Peronally I've never been to the place, a lot of my friends have though and they loved it. The landlord is reopening it with. A new chef/manager. The old owners arre trying to get the finances to open a new one on south union st. Don't go to the old location. Theres something going on with the land owner...

I have heard about this place and wanted to try. Stumbled upon it running errands and had to stop and try it.
This is a shack where they supposedly cook the hot dog in a special oil concoction. Not deep fried in 100% oil but some combination of oil and other liquids! Didn't look very appetizing but the dogs were very good. Got a combo special that came with fries and it was crinkle fries fried perfectly and was also delicious. -

I haven't been here in years, but they have the best hot dogs ever. They were huge. I used love the chilli and cheese ones. The Chilli was very spicy though. They also had the best lobster rolls and gave you a lot of lobster. The Chicken Barbs were pretty dry, but I used to get them with extra mayo and they always tasted a lot better.

good greasy and i have no idea how they call their 'chili' chili. long thin dogs fried in oil leave you as fast as you can put 'em down. not for every day, but a nice treat.
