Delightful indeed! How is it that I've driven down Santa Clara St. more times than I can count and have never noticed this place? Open for breakfust and lunch, Laurel's Delights is a wonderful little downtown deli sandwich shop! Inside is spacious with black & white checkered-tile floor, green table cloths, and dark red walls - classic deli-cafe look. The tables are well-lit and spaced far enough apart that you're not crashing chairs with your neighbor.
The menu is extensive, with a variety of sandwiches and salads. Being my first time in, I went with a (#4) Turkey w/ avocado, bacon, red onion, and may on sourdough sliced bread. A complimentary cup of soup was offered, but I declined as I wasn't hungry enough for both, and I really wanted to enjoy my sandwich!
First impressions were that the sandwich was well constructed - not too thick, not too thin. The bread looked fresh, and was it ever! Although not toasted, which could easily improve this sandwich, the sourdough was some of the softest I've had - a definite treat. The bacon was chopped before being added to the sandwich, a detail that I greatly appreciated. There's nothing worse than biting into a sandwich, only to pull out an entire strip of bacon that inevitably drops down and smacks you in the chin before breaking off and landing squarely in your lap on your just-cleaned pants. The turkey was fresh, soft, and without that "slime" you sometimes find on pre-sliced cold cuts. Taste was excellent. The red onions were just the right amount as not to be too overpowering in their flavor, and the mayonnaise was smartly dressed. Over-mayoing a sandwich is a killer, and these ladies clearly know the line between "just the right amount" and "too much."
At $7.92 (with tax) for my sandwich, it's not the cheapest sammy in San Jose, but I feel the price is justified based on the quality of this 1st visit. Remember, this included soup as well, though I didn't partake this time. $5.95+tax will get you a custom job a Zanotto's that will surely tip the scales more than Laurel's offering, but the weight difference would be mostly bread. To add avocado at Zanotto's would be an additional charge, as well. Z's sammies are positively huge, but there's probably the same amount in the middle of these at Laurel's Delights, and the freshness of the bread really stands out above the rest.
I'll definitely be back to sample their salad menu and perhaps an ice cream sundae! -

Food is great but a little overpriced!!! 1/2 sandwich and salad about $8. But it is enjoyable!
They will charge you extra for any extra thing you get....even extra chips for a salad (Mexican Ceasar)....geez!!! -

Went here last Wednesday and got a pesto chicken sandwich. It was awesome, I suggest it.
We just got take-out but it was a nice looking little place and I wouldn't have minded staying to eat there. They have very good cookies and a pretty decent chicken soup from what my friends said. They also loved the pesto.
The only thing that made me kind of sad was I went by there today and it is closed on the weekends. Oh well. -

Wow this place is good! I walked by this afternoon and decided to try it out and I'm glad I did. There's a huge menu (30+ choices), so I just asked the lady at the counter to make me a half sandwich of roast beef.
She then asked me if I wanted a #1 or a #2, which she then explained to be:
#1 = horseradish
#2 = blue cheese and mayo
I got a #2, and it came out great. Really soft wheat bread, with a few slices of freshly carved roast beef with lettuce and #2 sauce. Delicious! Loved it so much, that I circled the block after I got back to the car to make sure I got the name right! The only drawback was that the sandwich was small, think smaller than a few slices of white wonder bread sandwich bread.
I would've given this place 5-stars if the portions were a little larger, but I'm definitely going as soon as next week again. Like the last reviewer said, it's easy to miss, but if you go diagonally across from Mission Ale and directly across from the Chevron, it's right there. -

I stopped here for lunch. I was actually on my way to another place, but saw pictures of food in the windows of Lauret's delights. Amongst the pictures was a photo of a Rueben, it looked good, a mound of pastrami, sauerkraut, melted swiss, on rye. The sandwich was shown with potato wedges and a dill pickle spear. It looked good so I proceeded into the place.
I knew exactly what I wanted. The rueben with iced tea, I chose to dine there. I gave the guy $10.11 and put a buck in the tip jar, told him my name, he handed my a plastic cup with ice in it and a proceeded to the tea dispenser. From here on out it was downhill. The tea dispenser said "refills $1.00", WTF, it is water and tea bags and I am fetching it myself. How do you justify charging a buck for self service tea refills! After about a 5 minute wait my sandwich appears, immediately I notice potato salad, not the beautiful potato wedges in the picture, and also no pickle. I could look past this if the sandwich was any good, but unfortunately it wasn't. A proper rueben is GRILLED Rye bread, Russian or 1,000 island dressing, Pastrami or Corned Beef, Kraut, and melted swiss cheese. What I got was barely toasted rye (not grilled), 1.000 island dressing (you clearly specified russian on the menu), pastrami, kraut, and swiss (hardly melted).
Shame on you Laurel's delight! This was not even close! Why don't you folks take a trip to NYC and visit any random deli and find out what a rueben is supposed to be. Also take down the photos in your window! It is pretty bad when Arby's makes a better reuben than you. -

Their sandwich selection (categorized by meat) is truly immense, and they ALL sound so good. Indeed, they are. Though their food is delicious, their puny portions don't quite match up to their steep prices. All being said, their spotless atmosphere, friendly service and delicious food, makes this place a delightful lunch spot.

I like to pick up a half sandwich (ham and cheese) and a cup of soup for around $7. Good place for lunch.

Sandwiches are yummy, people are nice, but can be a bit $$$ for the average, poor college student. They also close shortly after the lunch rush, which is a bit annoying.

Went here for lunch today. I bought the New York Pastrami sandwich on the traditional portion of their menu. The sandwich cost me over $8, it's about $6+ and I guess cheese is extra. I was a bit disappointed on the price, I could have ordered take-out at a restaurant and have enough food for two meals at that price. The sandwich was decent sized and tasted pretty good.

Laurel's Delights is now open for dinner. I swung by to order dinner to-go a few days ago for the first time. I got the meatloaf dinner which includes vegetables and mashed potatoes or rice for $12.95. I substituted extra vegetables for the mashed potatoes or rice--I'm watching the carbs. Dinner was ready to go in just a few minutes.
At home, I found the meatloaf to be as good as I remembered it. Nothing earth shattering, but good, and better than I've had at many sit-down restaurants. The vegetables were cooked just right--not too raw and not too mushy.
The dinner menu I picked up says they're open M-F 7:30am-9:00pm, with dinner served after 3:00pm. Items on the dinner menu which I haven't tried yet include prime rib, pasta alfredo, creamy pesto pasta, pasta puttanesca, and pasta bolognese.
I've been to Laurel's for lunch too on rare occasions over the years when I've been in the downtown area for lunch, and have always liked getting their non-conventional sandwich options. Currently they have sandwiches like marinated lemon chicken, Paris chicken, Cajun chicken, turkey brie, and others I haven't tried yet or had so long ago I can't remember how they were. -

The Sonoma Salad is light, tangy and a perfect side to a sandwich. I had the Turkey with Bacon on soft sourdough. Yummy but a little expensive.

I think people who frequent downtown San Jose need to try Laurel's. It's a quiet place on Santa Clara. It's a bit easy to miss, but my friend and I happened to walk in one day and never stopped going...about once a week we end up in there. The staff at Laurel's are really friendly and helpful about what we wanted. We ordered the Sonoma salad (vinagerrette tasting dressing with mixed greens, feta cheese and pecans...my friend is OBSESSED with the dressing), turkey pesto, and i got the roast beef sandwhich...all I have to say that it's different here, because they're tasty, healthy and very FRESH. Every time we go in, it's always really empty :(, but I notice that the do a lot of catering. The menu is huge!!! It overwhelmed me at first, but you'll definitely find something you'll want to try. They also have sweets, smoothies, breakfast, and dinner entrees. Today they were offering pasta 50%...which came out to be less than 7 per pasta plate. I ordered the creamy chicken pesto...each pasta dish is offered in penne or linguini...It was good but it was a little too creamy. I think this place is underrated and this secret little place in downtown SJ needs to be spread! TRY THE SONOMA SALAD ASAP :):):)

Ah, Laurel's. I've enjoyed their tasty sandwiches and salads. They offer good sized portions and their prices are average for this area. My fomer company frequently had lunch delivered from them. Their owner is very nice as is their delivery person. There were a few times where they where late in delivering our orders to the office, but were mostly on time. Their location is nothing to get excited about. There are a few tables and chairs inside. I would phone in an order and take it to go. But, again, their food is worth the trip.
