I don't have a dog but I loved this park! It's so relaxing and really brings you out of the city. There is something relaxing about staring off at the mountain and watching dogs play with each other. I brought a picnic and just relaxed and I have found that hard to do when staying in Downtown LA. If I had a well trained dog, I'd bring them here for sure! (too bad cats dont fare too well in situations like this!).
The only thing I wish was that driving here was a tad bit easier. The google maps directions were a bit confusing and ended up relying on the GPS system.
I really wanna stress that the size of the park is phenomenal! I was able to play chuck it with my pup for a good half hour without bothering anyone around us. I also really like the scenery of the park and how it's tucked away from traffic and noise.
So why only 3 stars? It stinks. Literally. It smells like a fire hydrant that was visited by every dog in la and left out in the sun! I had to hold my breath in certain areas because it was so bad and can't say I enjoyed the visit as much as my pooch did.
Maybe I'm just sensitive to smell? I dunno. I found it strange no one else mentioned the odor in any of their reviews.
I would def come back if it weren't for the stench!! I just couldn't enjoy my time there. Although beautiful, the smell left a rotten impression on me. Boo.
Used to bring my dog here, but haven't been for several years. It should be great for people and the dogs, because the setting is bucolic, there's lots of room for lots of dogs and the views are excellent.
But as so often is the case with canines, it's not the dogs' fault - it's the dumb owner. Anyone who thinks public rudeness started with Kanye West and Joe Wilson has never been to the Laurel Canyon Dog Park.
No one cleans up after their dogs - I guess most of them think that since it's a city park, some city employee will come along and clean up after Fido. Reminds me of my neighborhood, where quite a few dog owners don't bother to clean up what their dogs leave in other people's yards. And brag about it.
Observance of the "small dog" area is hit-and-miss. On one occasion, I saw a man with a 90-100 pound Rottweiler immediately outside the small dog area. The dog was repeatedly jumping up on a woman who was holding her Yorkie in her arms and trying desperately to get away from the Rottie, while the man yelled "It's OK! He's just playing! He loves little dogs." What...as a snack before dinner? The woman finally left; the guy with the Rottie stayed. In the same place. When I left, the same scene was replaying with someone else's small dog.
Any polite attempt to ask an owner to rein in a misbehaving dog was usually met with a surly response, if not a tirade of profanity. And that was from the female owners. The guys were worse.
A majority of the dogs and owners I saw at Laurel Canyon were having a good time. But a good 25-30% of the people who bring their dogs there should have been spayed or neutered. There's always an odd feeling in the air, as if a disaster was about to happen.
And they do. I've witnessed a number of fights and at least three unprovoked attacks on dogs that were minding their own business, and all three required expensive visits to the vet. At least two dogs have been killed in this "great" dog park. In the two cases I know of, neither of the owners received any sort of restitution, or even an apology, from the owner of the dog who killed their dog.
But I guess the biggest reason we don't go there anymore is that my dog never wanted to spend any time there. She would walk around for a few minutes, and then head for the exit gate. Smart girl.
I love this park, and I've never had the problems that other people seem to have. Maybe it's just them... I have a very happy and friendly English Bulldog, and he has a fantastic time here. He always has much more fun here than at any other dog park that we've tried. The only possible way it could be better would be if it were next to a beach. Of course, we've only ever gone during the day, and maybe the peeps that can make it out during the work day are of a more positive and friendly variety. But, I still think this is the BEST dog park in LA. It's huge, lots of fun, friendly dogs, and it's always been clean when we've been there.
The place is a little hard to reach during busy traffic hours, but is also nice and secluded. It's also pretty easy to get to if you live north of hollywood because you don't have to go into or through the city.
The park has a very woodsy feel and nice, pleasant views. It's quite large as some people remarked, at least for the big dog section; the little dog section is a little pathetic but doesn't seem to be used much. At the two times I went, the crowd was very friendly (dogs and people). There's plenty of seating as well.
The major drawback for me was the lack of grass. Expect your companion(s) to get dirty, especially if they like rolling in the dirt like mine do... but even if they don't.
The drive is trying, but considering its in Laurel, that's to be expected and doesn't have any weight on this review.
The small dog area was closed for months (no ETA of completion) and the entire area smells. I agree with one of the other owners that many dogs here aren't well-trained and the owners don't keep an eye on their dog.

We love this place! Big, open, and lots of friendly dogs. The only down-side is that you gotta watch where you step sometimes because it's so big, people can't always keep up with their dogs. So wear you crappy shoes just in case. I was able to get the crap off with all the water that was lingering.
Oh yea, awkward yelling match between an old man who didn't want to let his dog in the pool and a guy who did. It's a dog park for cuteness sake!
We had every intention of taking the pooch for a day of Fun Adventure in LA but the poor thing wound up being locked up in the car most of the time or being kicked around downtown by people intent on getting their tacos or bacon-wrapped hotdogs. So, to reward her we decided to take her to the dog park.
First off, the drive over... ahem... if you're not used to crazy turpsy-turns, and blinds spots like crazy... this ain't yo drive. After pints of cold sweat and white knuckling the steering wheel we arrive... to see that there were cars parked along the side of the road where it clearly states "no parking". (this should be a blinking indicator right here)
We drive down the winding hill to find a packed lot. After many minutes of swearing under our breath (thank god dogs don't speak english) we forged our way into a spot. I use the porta-potty (i know, eww gross) and meet the them at the fence.
We walk down the spriraling hillside to the "small pooch" area, since our Lola is an 8 lb. yorkie. We were greeted by a few unanimated pooches. They say hello and their owners smile at us. Cool, let's just ignore the noxious fumes of too-much doggy piss and poop and try to have a good Sunday afternoon. Within minutes my dog gets sexually harassed, and, her being a virgin, I try to protect her from the little devil, they decide to leave and we decide to brave it out in the "big doggy area".
Yeeelp. Not this yelp but an actual dog YELPS!
I saw that there were a few dogs that were fighting and biting (not the least bit playfully) and one pitbull mix was always in the mix. We noted the problem area and moved over to the other side of the field. There were about 4 more tissy fits all involving the same dog... then that dog returns to the owner with BLOOD on its face and teeth. The other doggy parents told the owner that they should take the dog to a vet.... while the owner looked concerned, they made no efforts to leave. More fighting. More yelping. Enough.
We took Lola back to the deserted "small dog area" and there were a few ladies with small dogs. One of these ladies wore some sandals and was about to get "marked on" by a dog so I called out a warning... "he's about to pee!" She gave me a snide, snotty-haughty look, mimicking me to her friend... "on YOU." I finished, but turned to my bf. If she doesn't care that the ammonia in the dog pee is soaking into her cheap imit-leather sandals, then that's HER bad. I guess.
And these dogs started to crap... all over the place. At the park, (and generally ANYWHERE) you are responsible for your dog's mess. I said loudly, "this dog is pooping" only to be cut off with a rude/mean stare and the words, "SO?" from that girl. ugh. some ppl.
I would SO go back to get a shot of this sloppy bieatch who looks as sloppy as her dog-caring ways and post it on Yelp. BUT, that would be the only reason. :( This dog park sucks.
Oh and the drinking water area for big dogs has about a15 ft radius of Mucky Muddy Grass. Your dogs may trot over for a drink... but come back with blacky brown legs. Try cleaning THAT off in the car.

This dog park is a great place togo if you want your dog to try and procreate with Jessica Alba's poodle. Seriously, everytime I go here I see a random celebrity. The park is huge, there's a ton of grass, and it's surprisingly serene. I've thought about having a picnic here but I think there may be one too many poo poo platters being served in the area. But it's great fun for you and your dog!

Oliver loves coming here. He runs about 3 laps grinning like an idiot with his tongue hanging out. Sniff a little tail, run some more. Look at the big dogs, but don't engage, those guys are scary sometimes.
Give me a look that says, "give me some space, don't worry about me, I can take care of myself"
Oliver does a few more laps, interacts with a few other smallish dogs, almost gets raped by a confused girl pug who mounts him from behind.
Then looks for me in a panic.
I usually manage to step in dog shit here, it can get pretty stinky.
We hate the small dog part, it's insulting segregation. Separate is never equal. It's like sitting at the little kid table on Thanksgiving.
We only go the day before a bath, because that place stinks on ice and so do we when we leave.

This is one of the few dog parks I bring my dog to in LA. He's a 22lb Dachshund. He normally finds a playmate or two here. I've shown up mid afternoon in the middle of the week, to the weekend, to sunsets and there always seems to be a good group of dog around of all sizes and personalities.
The other good things: it's a huge park, there's a water area with bowls, there's a 'small dog' area that's separate (though nobody really uses it), and there's grass most of the time in most areas though he stills gets super dirty. I don't think I'd take him to a dirt park like in Silver Lake.
The downside is totally the drive up the hill. I live in Hancock park so it's a bit of a drive but worth it I think. It would be perfect if I lived along Mulholland. Most people pick up poop but there is some here and there. Get over it, it's a dog park not your front lawn.
I haven't really met any interesting people but I'm not really there for that, I'm there for my dog to socialize.

I've taken my Cattle Dog puppy here a few times and have yet to have a bad experience. Sure the park smells a bit like dog pee but most of the dogs are very well behaved and the people are incredibly friendly. I went once and the next time a few of the regulars remembered my dogs name. If you go on weekday mornings there is a very nice group of dogwalkers and their charges there that are so helpful and nice. The owners for the most park keep an eye on their dogs and if a dog is "acting up" they usually handle it quickly.
Most people are pretty good about curbing their dogs but there are a few that get missed so watch you step.
Nice large water area and a few little "trails" for the more adventurous dogs.
I understand why this park is often reffered to as the "good" dog park.
The drive way is seriously easy to miss so be on the lookout.
This is a pretty good park! My biggest problem was finding the place! The driveway is pretty easy to miss, but now that I know what to look for, that won't be an issue.
It is pretty big, but right now half of the large dog section is fenced off as new grass is growing.
When I went, the parking was pretty full, so I had to park along the driveway. There were probably around 50 dogs there, so my pup had tons of dogs to play with. I did notice a lot of people so wrapped up in conversation that they weren't aware of their dogs. I'm not worried about a fight or anything like that, I just want everyone to clean up their poop.
There are several picnic tables, which is nice.
The water dish area is somewhat poorly set up and can ends up as a big mud puddle.
I am only giving 4 stars because I am used to the Laguna dog park, and this one just isn't as good. But, we'll definitely be back!

I really like the vastness and variety of this park, and being down in the canyon away from traffic lends it an out-of-the-way tranquility. There's plenty of room for your dog to run around and play, meander aimlessly, lay in the shade, or hunt gophers as my dog likes to do. She's never caught one but is undeterred. Like any dog park, you can run into a few aggressive dogs here and there, or owners who are just jackasses, but I've never had any real problems. Check this place out if you're looking for some variety for your little prince or princess.
This is the largest and most attractive dog park I've been to in LA. It's surrounded by mountains and actually has grass (apparently they close down a half of it at a time to replant every January). My only issues: 1) it takes a while to get to (but is a scenic drive if you have the time) and 2) some people let their dogs keep coming back to hump the same dog over and over even after some fighting has broken out.

Half the park is still cordoned off lengthwise to grow some green. Can't wait till they open it up. Dogs are forced to interact more because of the small space. It was so crowded today people were parking on the driveway to the parking lot.
Too many small dogs in the big dog area. And then they freak when their yappers can't handle the big dog tussle.
I like this park because its close to home. And its secluded from the rest of the world. It sits between some hills and can barely be seen from Mulholland.
The crowd is ok.

In search of finding a new local place to take my dog, I had the chance to go to this dog park.
First off, in my oppinion, it was almost a drag trying to find parking. I get the feeling this park is mainly geared towards large dogs as there is an entire open range for them to play. The small dog area is super tiny. There was no water supplied to the dogs that I saw; people seemed stand-offish and uninterested in their pets, and more into just being out and about in a 'hollywood lifestyle' setting. I did not get the greatest vibe from this place, which is unfortunate because it is close to my house.
I normally take Sailor to a dog park in Culver City [see my other review], and I think I'll stick to taking her there.

Stay out of the large dog area unless you want to be pulling some pitty type off your dog. The small dog area is, well, small, and crappy, and next to the kiddie area. By the way, you can't get your small dog into the small dog area without walking through the large dog - and pulling some pitty type off your small dog - area...unless you walk illegally through the kiddie area. Which kind of defeats the purpose.
I bring my own water because the bowls, if any, look diseased.
Not all bad, I'm glad it's there. But the place is definitely large-dog prejudiced. Also expect a fair amount of purebred dog snobs, dumb blondes wondering if they should allow their purse dogs to have puppies, clueless people bitching about the spay and neuter ordinance (not true animal lovers, just gross breeders/breed snobs) and even MORE clueless people who bring UNneutered animals to the park, which makes them much more likely to start a fight and/or unplanned pregnancy. Ew.
The dogs are fun but the people get on my damned nerves.

Okay, well I've been wanting to get out to this dog park for years. Finally did today. Uh yeah why did we bother? Usually go to the Encino at Balboa & Victory dog park and after today will continue. Beautiful canyon/tree views! Once again it's not nature's fault but in fact people are to blame. We witnessed over 8 different dogs pooping and no owner in sight to pick up. I mean there was crap EVERYWHERE!!! Well, there were 2 different dog walkers with 10 to 13 dogs a piece when we arrived. Do you really think their going to clean up after all of those dogs? Well I witnessed the male dog walker watching a sweet canine baby dropping a load and yep, didn't pick it up.
Never mind I experienced a horrible sight of a black dog in a black car with the windows rolled all the way up and nobody around. ( It was about 85 outside so imagine the inside of the vehicle) I looked around for one minute then walked back to the car and started to call 911, a sec later a clueless guy came out of the porta-potty.
I could probably write a book from what I saw in just that short hour we were there. So, the bottom line is this place was more of a wanna be actor hang out then a grassy, fun doggie haven. Try once if you want to but there are cleaner places for your poochies to roam.
I like this dog park a lot. My dog likes to go up into the hill on the side. Its pretty clean and the people and other dogs have always been really friendly and well socialized. I like that its kinda hidden in the hill.
Beware wearers of white clothing.
I am the handsome well-groomed yellow lab with the big smile on my face, the dog who gets all wild-eyed and makes a bee line for that little kiddie pool- that some human was genius enough to bring to the dog park- and then jumps into the water--splash, splash splash.
I then will be the ridiculously dirty, yellow-ish brown labrador covered in dirt and grass with a silly look of content mixed with that "oh, no. my owners gonna chase me around with a towel" kind of worried look on my face. Look for me... I will see you there! Fun will be had at this sometimes grassy, sometimes dirt covered place where all my friends from the valley and Hollywood unite.
Sometimes there are snacks from a roach coach in the parking lot.
Sometimes there are crazy people (ok, always).
Sometimes there is a skirmish or two.
But it is always cool.
If you are going to come on a Friday, be aware that is closed for cleaning from 6am-11am.
There is now a small playground for kids in the corner next to the small & timid dog area. No dogs are allowed there.

Great dog park, convenient, huge. Most of the dogs are well-behaved, but more importantly, so are the owners--they know the difference for the most part between rough play and true fighting. Some are still idiots. (Hint: small yappy dogs that like to antagonize big dogs? Put them into the small dog park, people! or don't be surprised when your king charles is chased by that husky!)
I'd avoid early mornings--there are a few regulars who are a little nutso, but harmless, and one or two creepy trawlers who I'm not even sure have dogs show up in the mornings and on weekends. There's a crazy trainer with a great golden retriever who will rope you in with his dog's tricks and then try to sell you his services, too. You've been warned.

Not only is this a fun place for Rover to run around, but it's a great place for you to get some flirtatious excercise in too. Loaded with cute guys, girls and everything in between, it's a great spot to spend an afternoon at and hang with happy pups and cool peeps. Parking is a little packed on the weekends, but my dog owner friends have always been able to find a spot here.
Also I hear they do AA meetings here which seems pretty neat. :)

This place is great for dogs and people!
Let your doggies loose and have them play with the other doggies. This dog park is pretty big, with benches in the shade so you can relax and watch your doggy have a blast. People are nice, enough, but you're not really there for the people, just your doggy.
Caution: Your doggy will get dirty! So will the inside of your car...

Great dog park! My dog Sarah however was a little anti-social today probably from the killer walk I gave her yesterday. So I guess I would give this park 5 stars and Sarah would probably give it a 3, so that averages out to 4.
A lot of great dog owners, but also watch out for the owners who can't become the leader of their pack. From what I observed today some people don't have any Dog Whisperer in them at all. Maybe I'm just lucky with a very well-behaved dog. Some dogs were playing so rough that there was actually blood shed, maybe they were no longer playing, who knows.
Highly recommend this park if your dog is very social or does not have anxiety disorder.

Very large and grassy dog park. There is a section of brush that the dogs can potentially run off into, so watch out for that -- however, it is still inside the fence line.
People keep the place nice and relatively poop-free. When I was there, owners were generally attentive to their dogs -- but there are always exceptions.

This is the largest fenced dog park I've been to in L.A., although apparently Sepulveda is larger. Still, atop the hills off Mulholland, the escape from the smog is always nice and the dogs at this park are generally well-behaved. The park is as clean as a dog park can be, aside from some of the grassless permanently muddy areas. [An aside: I know there are rolling hills and all, but this is a dog park, people! Who are the fools who insist on sitting on the grass? I love dogs and I would still never sit on that nasty crapgrass.] Parking along the narrow road down to the entrance is hard to find at busy times, like weekend mornings.
The people are usually friendly, more so at some times than others - almost like a singles bar, if you like that sort of thing. Remember to pick up!

A vast doggie wonderland, and the best dog park I have ever been to hands down. There is ample room for dogs to run their hearts out, picnic benches, parking, and even a fenced off area for small and timid dogs. The only thing to watch out for is the large packs the dog walkers bring up there, since there is one person who is supposedly watching ten dogs. As long as you keep your eye on your furry friend at all time you'll avoid any doggie confrontations.
How to get there: Laurel Canyon Dog Park is on Mulholland very close to Laurel Canyon. If you're coming up the canyon from the west side, turn left at Mulholland and it comes up pretty quickly on your left. It's easy to miss, so keep your eyes open. If you're coming down Mulholland from the other direction you don't even see the sign, so when you see the back of what looks like a sign and you're almost at Laurel, turn right into the lot.
On a side note, Laurel Canyon Dog Park was featured on Entourage, and if one more guy asks me if "I come here often" I will break. It does seem like a great place to mingle, but it certainly doesn't look like the babe wonderland it does on the show. So quit it with the creepiness, don't hit on married women, and maybe learn an original pick-up line.

What an awesome park! I've been taking Zoey, our little Jack Russell Terrier the past few weeks, and all I think I really have to say is she gets back into my car and immediately goes right to sleep!
Anyway, I guess it's normally much nicer of a park with more grass etc, but lately the dry weather has led to a ton of dirt everywhere. This means just take your dog there on bath days and you've got nothing to worry about.
Everyone around tends to be pretty cool there, though a handful of people seem to take dogs that might not be quite ready to go yet. Word is a couple of months ago a Rottweiler killed a Dachsund here, after which the owner just took off. Just keep an eye in the general area of your dog, and watch for the occassional bully dog.
Interesting spot to see random celebrities too...
Anyone know of other good dog spots?

I have mixed feelings about this park, but my Borzoi loves it because he has so much room to run. There are a lot of "cool" looking dogs here which sometimes means their owners are more concerned about looking cool rather than the safety of other people's dogs. This is the problem.
There are also a lot of dog walkers here who keep their dogs on leash, which is so DANGEROUS.
However, I have met some great owners and great dogs at this park too. If it wasnt such a pain to get here then we would come everyday.
But like I said, my dog loves it because of the huge space for running and natural grass.
A great park, but be alert when there.
And remember that humping is an aggressive, dominant behavior that should not be tolerated. It is not cute or funny, it is dangerous and leads to dog fights.

laurel canyon dog park is my favorite park in los angeles to take my dogs to--a doberman, a terrier mix and a tiny 3lb. chihuahua. i'm a little taken aback at all the yelp reviews that say the park is gross and review it poorly due to some of the crazy pet owners they've encountered. that isn't the park's fault. i'm grateful the city has a property like this developed for us pet owners ... and i realize that sometimes other people's pets aren't going to be well behaved ... but it doesn't detract from the fact that MOST people are considerate and mind their dogs. most people pick up after their pets and in general its a very nice space. a huge large dog enclosure and a smaller small dog enclosure, lots of grass and surrounded by trees. if your dog is well behaved and social then it is an ideal place to spend a saturday or sunday morning letting him get some exercise.
Laurel Canyon dog park = fun fun for everyone!
Especially for Kiley and Maggie, my two lovely, rescued 40 lb rottie mixes.
BTW, if you're ever there and you're curious -- Kiley is the one who looks like he's frothing at the mouth with rabies (he's not; he's just dehydrated and refuses to drink water because he's terrified of it), and Maggie's the one who likes to get every other dog in the park to chase her in circles. You'll know it's us because I'll be the Dog Mama running around going "Maggie, don't eat that," and "Kiley, get out of the poopy mud hole!"
I swear, having dogs is like having children. And out of all of the dog parks I've been to, my kids seem to like this one best. Hilly terrain to run down, lots of grass to roll in, tables for mom to sit down at, and tons of purebreds to tease and be teased by.
Ahh, doggie heaven.

I wish someone would help this little park, it has so much potential.
Today was much better for large dogs, very few little guys. I assume because the little dog area is a tad on the small size. There were also alot of dog owners who seemed to be unaware of Dog Park etiquette . Alot of large dog "surprises".
I love this dog park! Besides that occasional owner or dog walker who doesn't pay attention when their dog(s) "drop off the kids" the park is relatively clean. I have 2 small dogs and we stay in the small dog park which I think is pretty scaled to their size, of course I would love it to be a little bit bigger, but my dogs seem to be happy with it. I bring my own water and bowl for my dogs because the water bowls are lacking in fresh water and a good scrub, plus my dogs happen to be a little anal about drinking out of other people's dishes. In regards to parking, I just don't go to the park at those busy times (the weekend). Or I go later in the day! Also, go to the 99 cents store and buy some tennis balls before you come! You get 3 for a dollar and it helps replenish the ball supply.
