I FOUND A NEW STYLIST!!! I took a half day the Friday before Memorial Day, and thought the best way to start my long weekend was with a new cut , color, and style. I wanted to find a new stylist and in doing my homework I found Lather through Yelp! I made an appointment with Maggie and was THRILLED with the result! What a lovely way to start a holiday weekend - with a cut and color that I LOVE. I have not loved my hair in a long, loooong time. (o: THANK YOU, MAGGIE!
Added bonus: The products they use at Lather smell wonderful, and the staff - especially Maggie - is really friendly! In addition, Ventrella is half a block away. You can grab a coffee on the way to sip on while you're waiting for your color to take. (o;
Carrie's my gal! I have super straight, short hair and she really knows what she's doing in order to make it not look like boring super straight short hair! Thanks Carrie!
***UPDATE*** - Carrie and Heather have moved to their new salon, Barbarella Salon on Broadway! Can't wait to check it out!
Best salon ever. Hands down. Lou takes her time, tells me what to do to my hair when I get home and wash it for the first time (I don't even own a hair dryer, don't know what to do with myself when it comes to hair, and she STILL has solutions for me that work!), and is straight up honest when I ask for something that's not going to look good. Plus she's a ton of fun to talk to while I'm in her chair!
Great prices for even greater service, not intimidating like a lot of salons, just plain fun. And sexy. Ask for Lou, although all of the stylists rock.
Lather on Montrose saved my hair. I have been going to Lather since May based on a friends reccomendation. Prior to going to Lather, I had recieved a horrible cut where a chunk of my hair was taken (see review for Zea). Needless to say I was frustrated. Then Lou entered my life. Lou is the best hairstylest I have ever had. She is honest and makes sure that you know what to do at home. She also creates a goal to work on. She even came in on New Years eve just to do my hair- and I got rave reviews. For waxing, I have seen Kathy, and she does a wonderful painless job every time. All of the staff is wonderful here and they work together unlike many salons where the stylist don't even say hi to each other. Also, the price is right $44 for a cut. I even got a pink streak extension for only $8.
This is really a wonderful place I can't say enough great things about it. The staff is fun, creative, friendly and will do whatever it takes to make you look great.

I have incredibly thick, coarse hair. I mean, it's ridiculous. Lo and behold I do some yelping and find Lather! My hair was cut today by Linda who was awesome. For the first time, someone actually listened to me and gave me one of the best cuts I've ever had. This salon is not snobby like others I've been too and they're reasonably priced ($44 for a haircut). It is also one of the friendliest salons I"ve ever been. I don't think I shut up from the moment I came in until I left. I'll definitely be back!

I started going to Lather when Carrie, my friend and hairstylist, started working there. It's only 3 blocks from my house. How convenient for me! It's only 2 blocks from the Damen Brown Line stop and there is plenty of metered parking. How convenient for you!
It's a cute, little neighborhood salon that is decorated nicely and when you walk in the door you feel like they know what they are doing, but it doesn't feel pretentious. If you are lucky you will be there when the owner has his adorable doggy running around.
They carry a variety of styling products and the services are reasonably priced. They do the usual cuts, color, and styling, but also do extensions, facials and other skin treatments, and waxing.
It's a small place, but it has a very good vibe and they will make you look beautiful which is what we all go for anyway!

Carrie worked on me, and might i add, that this time of year I tend to develop "white girl dreads" a specific type of horrible frizz/knot that matts the back of my head. It is gross.
I also had some year old highlights that were halfway down my head. All in all I was a big old mess-
I am now, newly and brighly highlighted (blonde and beautiful if i don't mind saying so)-
My cut is flattering for my face, and makes me feel more professional-Thank you Carrie for getting my hair back on track!

This is such a fun place to go and get a haircut and/or some great color! It's got a casual, artsy and very unpretentious atmosphere. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the prices are comparable to any good independent salon.
I'm sure that all of the stylists there are great, but I personally recommend Heather B. and Carrie, especially if you're looking for something more on the fun and funky side.
Street parking isn't too bad (much of it is metered), and Lather is walking distance from the Damen el stop on the Brown line.

I go to the Montrose salon. I have rather thick nappy/curly hair, and almost no one knows how to cut it. Very few people want to take the time to deal with it.
Well, Angela at the Montrose Ave. location will. So, all you guys with curly hair should go to her. I had 31 years of bad haircuts before I started going here.

Here here! I go to the one on Damen, and little blond Heather always cuts my hair. She is fun to talk to and always does a great job. Much better than pricier salons I've paid for downtown.
The one time I saw another stylist, I was not so happy with the results. But I got back on track with Heather, and have been happy ever since! (I have long curly hair that she makes perfectly straight--love it!)
I went to Lather Chicago yesterday for the first time based solely on Yelp reviews. I headed to the Damen location and had an appointment with Maya.
My hair is wavy and coarse, and I like to wear it short and professional-looking, but hair stylists seem to have a really hard time with doing a razor cut and making it look good (not too long, not too bald!). It took me a looooooong long time to find someone who could cut it right...and then I moved out of state. So I've been trying to find someone here in Chicago who knows how to work with my hair.
MAYA'S THE ONE!!! Not only is she extremely nice and friendly, but she understood EXACTLY what I was talking about when I described how I wanted my hair to look. She took the time to ask me about the top, the sides, the nape of the neck...to get a picture of it in her head before she began cutting. She also told me that she'd rather cut it longer and we could always go shorter...rather than cut it too short and have it be a disaster. When she was done, it was PERFECT!
She's going on maternity leave in a few weeks, but she'll be back part-time shortly thereafter...and I highly recommend her.
UPDATE: Maya's back!!! Yayyyyyyyyyyy!! But she's now at the location on Montrose, and only on Saturdays. Man, does she know how to cut and style hair. I'm really happy she's back. :-) Book an appointment with her. You'll be happy, too.

They actually have a second location on Montrose right by the Brown Line stop. It's a small, friendly place and it is very reasonably priced - at least for a guy's haircut.

I've been to both locations, and they are both fantastic. The owner cut my hair at the Montrose location and I love it! He is the first stylist EVER to not blow dry my hair straight at the end of a cut. I have really wavy hair and he put some curling stuff in it and made it even more curly. It is awesome--he really understood the way my hair works rather than trying to make it look all sleek like every other woman out there.
At the Damen location, I too, had Maya, and she is great. Big congrats to her on the baby though!
After reviewing Lather on Yelp and commenting on my failed perm, i was contacted by the owner and offered a complimentary perm. I just got my hair done again yesterday and Angela took her time to work with my hair to ensure a successful and fabulous perm... I had a great experience at the montrose location and refer them to everyone for quality hair care.

been there twice and both times it was for a major overhaul...especially this last time. have been extremely happy both times. i think i went to lu? lou? she was very nice and listened to what i wanted and delivered. also, they sell pureology products which are fantastic!!

I discovered lather when I lived down the street from the salon - and I have kept making the drive from the south loop!
Heather (my stylist) always has great suggestions for my hair, and is always honest about which cuts/color will best suit my face. I never have trouble making an appointment, and am always charged very reasonably for the services - in fact, when I had super short hair, I was charged for a men's cut rather than being up-charged simply because I am a girl. Now that my hair is long again, I still think that for the quality of service, the price is excellent.
lather carries m.o.p. and pureology products (my hair says, "YUM!").
Also, you can't beat the friendly pup who goes chair to chair for cuddles.
On my ride home from my haircut this evening, I noticed two people checking out my new 'do (I made sure there was nothing on my face or in my teeth when I got home - it was definitely the hair!).
Lather is a great deal with an incredibly talented and friendly staff. Go check it out!
