I went here for lunch today and ordered the chimichanga de carne (see picture). It was delicious! The rice was a miss though. And the chips and salsa were nothing special.

The service was pretty slow. (I watched the waitress hold my bill and card in her hand as she talked to another waiter for about 5 minutes before she decided to walk over and give it to me).

The chimichanga was more than enough to satisfy my hunger - I would come here and order it again... but maybe order it to go.

Las Placitas can be hit or miss for me ... and I wouldn't give them more than 3.5 stars at their best moments.

The service is SLOW and the food is barely borderline OK.  I don't care if they can seat me without a reservation at dinner time if I have to wait forever for drinks and food!

Have you ever paid to eat vomit?  I have not either until I ate here.  I am very surprised by all the positive reviews.  This place is GROSS.  Well, at least what we ordered was.  I got the chili relleno and it was awfull.  I couldn't even eat it.  My girlfriend got the tacos al carbon and they were pretty bad too.  All the meat was really fatty and chewy.  My chili relleno had nothing but what seemed to be some sort of carbohydrate filler in it.  No flavor at all with either dish.  Yuck.  This place was packed too.  Maybe people know something I don't....or maybe vomit is supposed to be good for you or something.... I dont know....  All I know is I hated the food here.  Service was good.

I don't make it to the Eastern Market area terribly often, so when I do, I try to go different places.  I was with an out of town friend and we were visiting another friend who lives over here, and on the way to her apartment, noticed a Mexican restaurant, which we both agreed sounded really good, so we ended up eating here.  Run on sentence much?  We were quickly seated, since it was largely empty since most people were out seeing the fireworks, and brought out water and chips and salsa.  The salsa was nice and chunky with a good amount of flavor, and the chips were warm and fresh.  What more can you ask for?

The menu has all the standard Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes, as well as a good selection of Salvadoran food.  I went that way and ordered the lomo saltado, which is served with black beans and white rice.  The food came out (well the other two, mine took slightly longer for some reason), and what I got was a giant plate of delicious steak, peppers, onions, and french fries all sauteed together.  So, so good.  The steak was nicely seasoned and the veggies all well-cooked without being overdone.

So why only four stars?  The service.  It was spotty at best.  I"m guessing as a result of the emptiness of the night, they were kind of bored, so when we finished we were asked by multiple people if we wanted them to take our plates (no, we want a box), and the check, which we asked to be split, wasn't really done properly.  Not bad, but it kind of hurt the experience.  Our table was also seated in the light of a lamp that was above a ceiling fan, so we had a slow strobe effect that was just a bit distracting.  But other than that, it was a definitely a good restaurant.

Walking in with a party of 8 at dinner time might be a problem for some, not for Las Placitas!  They accommodated us and ensured we had our drinks and tasty chips and the BEST salsa I have ever had.
It was happy hour, so we got a pitcher of margaritas for a great price, but they tasted AWFUL.  Maybe I am just spoiled by the fantastic ones I get at Vivo's back home, but these were awful and had a horrible after-taste.  That would be
That being said, when the food arrived, I was in Heaven.  The fajitas smelled so good and tasted even better!
The corn tortillas were fresh and tasty.
The service was fabulous.
The food was oh so yummy in my tummy.
Those margaritas were the only thing keeping them from the big 5.

AMAZING! My friend convinced me to eat here....my expectations were low. (All other Mexican food that I've had in the East Coast had been a shame and just plain embarrassing excuse for Mexican food.) But this place was surprising sooo very good. It is a cozy place to be with a group of people, the drinks were strong, and the service was pretty good. On my next visit to DC, I will request to eat here again.

Las Placitas is the restaurant we choose when we've got out-of-town visitors in the mood for Mexican food.

The mix of traditional Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Salvadoran food makes for a nice set of choices. Chips and salsa at first, as one would expect, and the salsa is fresh and chunky. Their chips are thinner than the usual kind, which makes for a nice, crunchy salsa dipping base. The guacamole dip that I got was smooth avocado with chunks of onion and tomato. And lord, was it rich. That plus a bowl of tortilla soup was a complete meal. The soup had a rich broth and vegetables steamed to perfection, plus just enough chicken. The platanos fritos appetizer is good, though I expected to see fried plantain chips rather than whole sections. Be warned that if you're not hungry, this one appetizer will fill you up; it comes with rice and beans.

El tipico is a popular menu item because of its variety, and the vegetarian plate has corresponding variety. My husband has had the pollo encebollado, which I found tasty, especially with the sauteed onions. The puerco al horno is quite good and will remind you of any of a number of Caribbean recipes.

The service is friendly; its speed depends on how much of an impression you make on the wait staff, i.e., if they're busy and can't really connect with you and where you are in the restaurant, then don't bet on things going quickly. But don't take it personally, either.

Note that the restroom is in the very rear of the building, and that you'll likely jostle waiters around the bar trying to get to it.

I met up with a friend for lunch there on the first warm spring day in May.

We ate outside.  I ordered El Tipico.  Service was good, the food was also tasty.

For the next two days, I was very sick and spent the nights running to the bathroom with cramps.

I called my friend the following week to see how she was doing and she also had been sick.

Perhaps they had a bad day.  I might try them again in the future, but I cannot give them a good review at this time.

Stop number two on Mary Kay and Laura's South of the Border Queso (or Guacamole) Comparison, Culinary Discovery Tour and Gastronomic Extravaganza.  I was excited to try this place out and little did I know it sat in my own back yard for the whole year I lived in Eastern Market, but I digress...

I arrived first and the server showed me to a table in the window and then more or less informed me that I would be having a margarita (in this very charming sort of question/sort of not a question manner).  Um, if you insist pal, I'll have a margarita.  I chose  to start out with the House margarita and see what it was made of.  It was actually really good - lots of tequila, not too sweet.  And for $2.65 during happy hour, the price cannot be beat (not that $5 will break the bank if you don't make it during happy hour).

This was a cute little place that seemed to be increasingly popular as the evening wore on.  Lost of regulars coming in throughout the evening led me to conclude that this place is an important part of the 8th street section of Eastern Market.  I still don't know what to make of the lady with tuburcluosis sitting behind Mary Kay, but she was having a great time too so hopefully she didn't die later on in the evening or something like that.

The meal started out well.  Chips and salsa were good.  Actually, the salsa was really good - lots of chunks of tomatoes, with cilantro and lime.  The average chips didn't deserve that great salsa, but they were a great delivery method for the salsa to my mouth.

Mary Kay threw me for a loop once again, this time ordering the guacamole for our starter.  Fine with me, since the guac was delicious!!!  As MKS mentioned in her review, it was served in this fried flour tortilla "bowl" that made for some interesting scooping before she dove in with her knife to break it apart.  Five stars for the guac.

For dinner, I had the El Tipico, one of the Salvadorean specials.  I realized halfway through the meal that it was a LOT of carbs on one plate.  No true vegetables of any kind.  (Not that I minded)  The Yucca and the plantains were the best thing in this platter - wonderfully cooked and yummy.  The black beans were rather bland, the pupusa was dry (not nearly enough cheese) and the tamale was a little unusual.  Nevertheless, I was full and did enjoy trying each of the selections.  It looked like MKS enjoyed her beef burrito (ordered based on suggestions from other yelpers), and I think she mentioned something about it being pretty good in between bites.

Service was good, people were friendly and this is definitely a neighborhood "spot."  I so wish I had known about this place when I lived in the area.  Wait, maybe it's best that I didn't since I know as it would have contributed to a double digit weight gain!!!  I would love to come back here sometime and try the fajitas.  I do recommend giving Las Placitas a try if you're in the area.

MKS and I are on to our next stop.  Stay tuned...

I'm still in physical pain from our evening at Las Placitas, which was Stop Number Two on the South of the Border Queso (or Guacamole) Comparison, Culinary Discovery Tour and Gastronomic Extravaganza.

I met Laura V. at the designated location at eighteen thirty hours on a Thursday night.  Well, I actually arrived at eighteen forty-five, and she was already seated at a table in the front window.  She was on her cell phone saying repeatedly, I kid you not, "Can you hear me now?"

While I waited for her to finish her audio quality test, I put chip to salsa and started chewing.  Crappy, standard chips, and really great salsa!  I can't quite place the flavors, but it was exceptionally fresh and chunky.

I needed a margarita ASAP, and as is my usual M.O., went for the expensive one first -- here, this is the Cadillac margarita.  It's not clear from the menu what differentiates the various margaritas, but this one definitely had Grand Marnier.  That usually gives it a sweeter, smoother flavor. I decided, though, that the tequila they were using didn't really need the added liqueur, so my second drink order was downgraded to a "Gold" margarita.

We tossed around the idea of ordering queso.  I mean, I'm supposed to be comparing quesos at all these places.  But previous Yelpers had warned me that the queso here wasn't really, um, good.  So we got the guacamole instead.  I was sure glad we did!  It was very good guac -- smooth, but with some chunks left in it, tomatoes, cilantro, plenty of lime.  It tasted so fresh.  Too bad about those cardboard-y chips.  Plus, the guac was served in a makeshift flour tortilla bowl.  It looked really cute in the initial presentation, but in practice it was pretty tippy and difficult to scrape the bottom of.  We debated picking it up and eating it, but I finally attacked it with a knife, and we were able to continue snacking on the debris.

Several other Yelpers had recommended the beef burrito, so in a pique of adventurousness, that's what I ordered. I normally get fajitas, but.......  yeah, I probably should have gotten the fajitas.  The burrito was good!  No, really it was!  But three hours later I'm still a bloated burrito bomb.  Of course, that could be the refried beans.

By the time we finished up, the place was completely packed.  This is clearly a popular place, and there were many regular customers that were recognized by the waitstaff. I liked the feel of the crowd, with the exception of the drunken tubercular woman behind me that alternated shrieking laughter with a hideously dry and hacking, retching cough.

In sum -- if I lived closer to Las Placitas, I would love to be a regular here.  As it is, though, it's pretty far off my regular beat.  I don't know if I will make a special trip to eat here again. But if I'm EVER back in this neighborhood again, I will most certainly suggest a meal here.

This cute stop in Eastern Market was a delicious and welcome refuge from the cold last weekend.

It may not look like much from the outside, but that's only a sign that it's got great food inside, right?  Well it does.  We sat down and everything on the menu looked great.  My girlfriend got El Tipico and I tried out the Puerco al Horneo (sp?).  The chips and salsa came out right away, and the service was very prompt and friendly.

The chips were a bit greasier than I would have liked, but the salsa was fresh and delicious.  We tried to go with El Salvadorean food since we felt like we don't get chances to eat it that often.  El Tipico was very carb-heavy but tasty.  The yucca and plantains were great.  The pupusa was good, but I've had better.  The pork dish was okay, but nothing special or very memorable.  Also, the black beans we had were pretty bland/tasteless.  I hear such good things about their burritos that I can't help but want to go back just for that.  I'd recommend going here if you're in the area.

It was a bit pricier than I would have expected.  However, the dining experience was well worth it.

The best Salvadorian food I've ever eaten! Even though it was my first time, I gave the menu a good test. I ordered the mussels appetizer, a shrimp appetizer and two pork and cheese pupusas. A la carte dining. The shrimp came in a clay pot in a rich Spanish sauce, and they were outstanding. The pork and cheese pupusas were the best I've ever eaten, by far. I was starting to give up on ever finding an outstanding pupusa that met all of my lofty expectations, so thank you, Las Placitas!  The relative low point were the mussels, served in their shell in a huge mound. They would've been terrific, but they weren't very hot when they arrived.  The other downer was that the place was packed, and our food didn't arrive until an hour after we were seated.  But that reminds me, we had fantastic margaritas in the meantime. So it was all good!

Las Placitas is pretty much the exact same restaurant as La Lomita, La Lomita Dos, La Loma, La Plaza, and La Paraiso (on 14th).  I sometimes wonder if there is a salvadoran food distribution company like those that run the crappy pizza and chinese joints.  Don't get me wrong, these salvadoran places are much better than those, but it freaks me out that they are so similar.

Anyway, because these places are doppelganger madness, I'm going to review each one with some quick pros and cons:

Pro: If you're a straight female or gay male, the marines sometimes run by here in their tiny shorts.

Con: If you hate the marines for participating in an unjust war and can't even look at one without getting upset, don't come here.

Pro: Tapatini's down the street closed.

Con: The decor in here is almost worse.  How can I compare salvadoran restaurant decor to a failed attempt at late 90's sex and the city rip off mostly derived from cheap Ikea products? I don't know.

I have to agree with Kate H.: the burritos are addictive. In particular, I recommend the beef burrito plate - the beef was so tender.

Everyone at our table was happy with their selection. The service was reasonably fast (caveat: except getting limes for a person in our party, which required asking 5 times!).

I'd rate this particular restaurant tops among Mexican/Salvadoran in the DC Metro area.

Wide range of choices, sangria was weak, food showed promise. I shall return.

My wife and I did return and we were very hungry..so the carne asada and her smothered half chicken (I can't remember the name) were both comforting along with the fact that the US Marines are right around the corner and very present......don't ye forget that Marine Barracks aided in turning around this part of southeast...I lived here as a child and my family left during the riots....but I am back with avengeance living in my home town.

Oh I forgot one important point, it took me 30 minutes to get our check

I didn't find much good Mexican in DC until my last weekend here. My boyfriend was sick and requested Mex takeout, so I ordered from Las Placitas. We got chicken quesadilla, beef burrito and chicken enchiladas. Boyfriend said "I love Tortilla Cafe but this place kicks its f-ing ass."

I was leaving DC in four days and had to have it again. I dragged my roommates there for happy hour, where we had two huge pitchers of margaritas for $15. I got the beef burrito again, giant and smothered in green tomatillo sauce. The guacamole is chunky and tangy, salsa great too. My friend got the sampler platter, and even though I had cleaned my plate I couldn't help but finish her steak. It was perfectly chargrilled, really flavorful with a wonderful sauce.

Everyone sick of the faux Mexican in town should try this delicious little place.

I do really enjoy the food here, but unfortunately service is very poor.  It is incredibly slow and very hard to take children because of the time it takes to get drinks, order, and receive food.  We live very close and keep hoping service will be better than the last time since the food really is good, but every time we have been disappointed with the time it takes to receive service and food.

This is one of those places you either love or say "what's up with those freaks who insist this place is so good"?  But unlike Lauriol Plaza which actually does merit the question, Las Placitas is the real deal.  A real neighborhood restaurant with quality food and not terribly expensive (drinks can drive that up though).

Personal favorites:  Lomo Saltado, Las Placitas salad with steak (a great bargain--fresh salad with hearts of palm, fresh avocado slices and a light dressing with a ton of carne asada on top), seafood burrito, and tacos al carbon.  El Tipico is also highly reccommended.

The decor is what I love most!  In fact I was disappointed when they painted over the simulated wood panelling...we need more places like this!  I need more wood panelling and more cowbell.

After 30+ years in the UK sampling a lot of bland food, moving to the US and more specifically, moving to New Mexico gave me a taste for the spice of Mexican cuisine, albeit with its 'New' twist (and the uniqueness of New Mexican red and green chile).  I mention this just to qualify that this Brit might know why he's given this little hole-in-the-wall 5 stars.

Las Placitas does Mexican food as Mexican food should be - high on taste, low on presentation.  The food here is exquisite, and as long as you realize that if you go to Mexico (New or Old!), you're not going to find authentic cuisine presented in the style of Rosa Mexicana, but it will be presented in a style where the word "sloppy" seems quite appropriate, then you're going to love it.

One of the beautiful things about Mexican/Salvadoran cuisine is the ingredients combining their flavors into something quite special - this is accomplished by mixing these ingredients into something that looks a little odd, but tastes just divine.

Las Placitas is one of the few Mexican restaurants in the District that pulls off this idea, and doesn't care what the Aesthetic Police think about it.  The enchiladas were divine, the margaritas just as everyone else has reported, and the wait-staff were incredibly friendly, despite the fact that they understood very little of what we were saying.  Even the slight mistakes they made (pouring water into the 3/4 finished margarita glass) were treated with humorous apology, a few belly laughs, and of course, another free margarita!

Head out to Las Placitas and try for yourself - ignore any pretentiousness where presentation is concerned, and let the flavors have a party in your mouth for one special night...

I'd have to agree with two other yelpers in that the margaritas are very good, and that the staff is extremely friendly. We stopped here on a sunny day to grab a table outside and ended up staying for damn near two hours sipping down pitcher after pitcher of margarita.

As the waiter informed us, they don't use cheap stuff like Montezuma in the margaritas, which gives you a rough sensation in the throat. They use cuervo gold (and some grand marnier in the cadillacs) which makes the margaritas very tasty. After a couple hours, our waiter even gave us a margarita on the house! My friend said that was because the waiter was hitting on our other friend, but I didn't care - free booze!

At the end, when we were all nice and buzzed, some gum from their gumball machine seemed like a great idea. My buddy put in a quarter but unfortunately his hand-eye coordination was a bit off and his gumball ended up rolling down 8th street. Our waiter gave him another quarter from right out of his own pocket! That's service!

The food, very good as well. I grabbed el tipico - which comes with a chicken tamale (great), plantains (hard to screw up, but good), a pupusa (great), and some fried potatos (ok), as well as cabbage, white rice, and black beans which I forgo. When we were sucking down margaritas at the beginning, a basket of chips and some salsa came out as well. The chips weren't special, but the salsa was fresh and chunky.

So good food, good drinks, good service.  Very tolerant of stupid drunk people (*cough*me*cough*). It's also on the west side of 8th street, so on a sunny afternoon/evening, you'll be in the cool shade, as opposed to a place like Banana Cafe across the way where you'll be baking in the sun until 7.

Great place. In Capitol Hill on a sunny day, it'll be the first place I head to again.

My friends love this place as much as the other reviewers, so I would say try this place, just don't order what I ordered!

We got queso with our chips.  Even the friend who took us to Las Placitas admitted that it was no better than melted Velveeta, and she swore up and down that it was not indicative of the quality of the rest of the food.  The queso had to be mixed with the salsa to be tolerable, but it was pretty scary in that iridescent yellow Velveeta way.

I ordered a side of tamale elote, one of my favorites.  I love tamales, so I enjoyed it, but it was on the dry side.  The same dish at Abi on Columbia Pike is far better.

I ordered the seafood chimichangas, which was weird.  Small and scant pieces of shrimp and scallops in a weird pale gravy with a lot of green peppers.  I ended up just eating the tortilla and not much of the interior.  The refried beans and rice were forgettable.  I experienced a serious bout of food remorse as I watched my companions eat their enchiladas.

Since I don't live on Capitol Hill, the dinner was disappointing enough that the next time I get a serious Mexican/Salvadorean craving, I would never think of coming here again.

P.S. This place is family friendly, and by that I mean that throughout all of dinner, the two kids sitting behind me were beating on the back of my chair and yelling in my ear.

I finally had the chance to go to Las Placitas the other day with a friend.  The food was incredible.  She had El Tipico and couldn't stop raving about the chicken tamale.  I had the Puerco al Horno and was extremely happy.  Rice and beans were tasty, especially when eaten together.

Reason for not getting the 5th star?  Slow service, the waitress seemed to dislike my friend and me and was just unpleasant.  It took about 15 minutes for my friend to get her coffee, and trust me, there were only about 3 other parties in the restaurant at the time.

Also, they didn't have the pork pupusas.  The cheese one was ok, but I was really looking forward to the pork pupusa.

Perhaps at a "normal" restaurant I would have docked 2 stars, but the food was so tasty that I couldn't bear the thought of giving this place only 3 stars.

and heck yes, I'll be going back here again.

Note: they don't write the bill until after you've eaten.  They forgot to include my friend's coffee on the bill, and I'm pretty sure they undercharged me for my entree, but I didn't really remember how much it cost in the first place...

For you Yelpers who say that Chipotle has the best burritos in the area, I don't think you've tried this place! Of all the Salvadorian/Mexican eateries in the city, Las Placitas is my favorite.

As the other reviewers have noted, this is certainly not high dining. The staff is helpful and friendly, but sometimes harried when there is a big crowd. It seems the nicer the weather, the bigger the crowd enjoying the delicious sangria and margaritas.

If you eat red meat, get the beef burrito. The meat they use tastes like it has been marinated for days. For appetizers, I suggest the ceviche or the shrimp with garlic butter. Big portions and high quality for a low amount of $$.

Went here based on reviews and it was EXCELLENT.  Definitely a hole in the wall sort of place, which usually end up being my favorite restaurants and this one totally qualifies.  If I lived in DC this would be on my regular list of stops.  Didn't try the margaritas since I was with family but I really wish I had based on other reviews.  I'm definitely stopping back when in town.

This place is fantastic, and I can't get enough! The Mexican/Salvadorean cuisine is amazing. Particularly noteworthy are the Camarones Azteca (shrimp with rice and vegetables in a fish sauce - amazing!) and the Puerco al horno (braised pork that literally falls apart, it's so tender, with plantains and rice). The strawberry margaritas are great, and the waitstaff are so friendly and very accommodating.  I understand that they are moving soon (?) so go while it's still a little neighborhood hole-in-the-wall (a definite part of its charm!).

I agree with Sean, this is a quality hole in the wall. There are usually people from the Hill here, even though I think it's quite a walk. I love this place because they don't mess around and try to be fancy. It is what it is.

Also, the workers there are super friendly. The second time I came in, the owner recognized me and gave me a big hello and asked where I had been. Around Christmas-time they brought out complimentary salsa and guacamole for me. They also give you a free little dessert (not sure what it's called) and a whole bunch of chewy candy with your bill. I'm not sure where they get this chewy candy, but it's good and it usually has pictures of the Flintstones on it.

This is a cutie little place with flavorful food at fair prices. Salsa and fajitas were yummy and plentiful. Service was friendly. Ambiance was welcoming clean, and authentic. Nice little spot.

This is a quality hole in the wall. I almost always see some Congressman chowing down all by his lonesome (always seems to be a CongressMAN and always alone... is that odd?)
But dont worry about being taxed or courted by the clientele, the reason to come here is for the simple Salvadoran food in a simple setting at simple fair price. A good place to go when you dont want to get dressed up and dont want to do the dishes. The ceviche is also killer.

I came here for the first time last night. I had a good feeling about this place right when we walked in cause it was fairly packed, which was a good sign considering how many other places there are to choose from on that street, and on top of that it was a Monday night.
The chips and salsa were pretty good. The food was GREAT. I'm fairly picky about my cheese enchiladas (most places in DC don't really seem to get it right) but with an order of extra red sauce these were some of the best I've had in this city.  My friend got a seafood dinner. Can't remember the name of it, but it was a hit too.
As already mentioned, they are not playin' around with the margaritas! They are STRONG. I was done after sharing a 1/2 pitcher. I don't know if I should say this or not, but the taste kind of reminded me of what an air freshener might taste like. But somehow that's not necessarily a bad thing. I thought it was good. =) They even had lemon flavored margaritas, which I thought was interesting, but we stuck with the strawberry.
Great place. Will definitely come back.
