10 reviews for Las Canarias At La Mansion
My girlfriend and I attend their Sunday Brunch recently and were very satisfied with everything. The service was excellent and the food options were awesome. Sure it is pricey ($98 for two with tip), but that what you pay for. We arrived at 11:30 and stayed till 2:15 (brunch over at 2). We were treated like rock starts with unlimited mimosas and an all you eat buffet. All and all, well work it.
Me likes!
It was Father's Day, so we headed here for this restaurant's famous Sunday brunch.
We were seated on the river. It was a great spot, and at just past 10 a.m., it was still comfortable for dining outdoors. I must say, though, that I'm surprised they've managed to fit tables of four on the narrow brick ledge, because to get to and from the brunch buffet, there's some notable coordination required to avoid a wipeout down the stairs.
The service was attentive and pleasant for about the first 2/3 of our 60-minute stay, and then our waiter Daniel turned a little scarce. Still, we were happy with our riverside location and the service overall.
So why just three stars? Frankly, the buffet style food was fine, but not spectacular. The apple cider pork loin was dry, the omelette and waffle stations were utter chaos, the eggs benedict was tough, and many of the other breakfast items were pretty standard buffet fare. The standouts were the blintz-like cream cheese crepes, some spicy breakfast sausage links, sticky buns, an apple tart, and a pecan pie tart. Honestly, the desserts were the best things going. Oh, and the coffee was strong, rich and delicious. I love coffee from a luxury hotel -- it's like they all share the same mysterious coffee secret.
But sweet Jesus, was it ever packed. On her first trip to the buffet, Total Woman was gone so long, I considered going after her to confirm she was still ambulatory. Surely, a restaurant of this caliber can manage crowds more effectively.
We've stayed at La Mansion before, and we've (very much) enjoyed breakfast at Las Canarias. It's a beautiful restaurant with an elegant, old world feel. Just skip the buffet. It's a lot of money ($134 for three of us, with tip), a lot of hassle, and, in the end, simply not worth it.
Regular lunch/Sunday brunch are the deals here. Dinner is pricey by comparison.
A nice upscale restaurant on the Riverwalk, right in the mix of things.
Try the Red Snapper, but don't try the lobster. Too expensive for what you get there.
Desserts were excellent. Try the pumpkin or apple tart.
I've been here before so I'm averaging my 4-star rating based on today and past experience. Unfortunately, today the brunch buffet just wasn't up to par. We arrived at 1 pm, so I'm thinking the food had been "ripening" for quite a while and they weren't bringing out more, except for the sushi and shrimp (probably because I cleaned out that section personally...). No crab claws today either. Bummer.
My mom even commented that there seemed to be less of a selection this time. Unless I've confused them with another restaurant, Sunday brunch here also used to include unlimited mimosas, but now you have to buy the champagne by bottle or glass. I think unlimited mimosas should always be included . :-)
Once our party of four was done with our bottle of the cheapest champagne, our server did give us a few complimentary refills (and I don't think he saw my red "You've been yelped" card that I had taken out my wallet just minutes earlier to show my brother's girlfriend--this is the third restaurant I've been to in the last week where I have received free booze--coincidence?).
I am a fan and I will go back. The hotel is beautiful and the service is amazing. Just hope next time I can update this review to 5 stars.
Oh, and free valet parking at the hotel if you eat at the restaurant (for brunch anyway...not sure about other meals).
A strong 3 for me.
Myself and some good friends were in San Antonio looking for a place close to our river walk hotels for dinner. We wanted something good yet casual. A friend recommended Las Canarias.
We were in shorts because the restaurant said it would not be an issue. We were the most casual people there, but, did not feel uncomfortable. If I went back, I would probably wear slacks.
On the river walk but not ON the river walk. Only a few tables outside. The rest are elevated and in the air conditioned quiet restaurant.
We started with the thin filet carpaccio in chimichurri, sea scallops and gnocchi with pancetta. I had the gnocchi which was very enjoyable. The filet carpaccio was my favorite and I would probably order that on a return visit.
Most of us went with the goat cheese stuffed chicken. Nice crispy skin meets warm cheese. A great dish.
I had the caramel parfait for dessert which looked more like an mini ice cream log. It was dessert. Nothing to write home about.
As for the wine, they have a nice wine list. Most of the wines are decently priced. There were only a few that I thought were a little too high. They actually had some wines on the list selling below today's market value. They also have about 15 different cheeses to pair with wine as a dessert or starter.
This is the kind of place that I would not go out and actively seek if I was at home, but, welcome with open arms when I am in San Antonio. It is river walk close, not crazy expense (entrees 20-35), and is a higher end dining experience on the river walk.
Good food - not expensive.
The Las Canarias is one of the nicest restaurants along the River Walk. Their service is very very good. I went with a workmate for lunch - we shared the 'Texas Toast' thing - very good (but make-able at home).
She had the open face steak sandwich, I had the Texas Blue Crab Cakes. Mine were very good and served with asparagus and lovely pepper sauce. Our wine was nice as well.
I would return.
The Champagne Brunch at Las Canarias is amazing - there is a wonderful selection of food and the constant mimosa refills really round out the experience. During our visit the brunch seemed to lean more towards lunch type foods rather than breakfast, but it was all delicious. The fresh waffles with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles were and amazing treat.
I'm giving it 4 stars because the Eggs Benedict was overly dry in the chafing dish, and had little to no hollandaise sauce on it. They seem to only refill a dish when it gets low, but people weren't eating the benedict very much - perhaps because it didn't look very good?
Brunch runs for about $38 a person, but includes unlimited drink refills and they will validate your parking for the valet in the hotel garage.
my family came here 2 consecutive days for breakfast because it was just so damn good. Really elegant table settings outside that are elevated off the riverwalk enough so that you can enjoy it, but not have people bother you while they're walking through (like at landry's). The service was impeccable--refilled my drink without me asking, folded my napkin when i went to the restroom...The second day, our server Ignacio brought us an amuse-bouche smoothie to hold us over after we ordered. Noteworthy: The Museli was incredibly delicious, best bagel I've had outside of New York, and their potatoes were seasoned and cooked just the way I like.
I had a great breakfast here my last visit to the La Mansion Del Rio. I chose the buffet. The eggs and fruit were wonderful. The OJ was perfect. The staff was amazingly accomadating. Really impressed with this hotel. They really understand customer service.
Great view of river walk from the terrace without being overcome by river walkers.
