We took a good friend here who was visiting us in the city. We LOVED it here. Picnic tables out back, views of terraced vines, bocce ball court, horseshoe court, corn hole, and not to mention the two adorable vineyard dogs that roamed about looking for attention (we met Buster and Bubba), you couldn't ask for a better relaxed, fun, and wine loving atmosphere. You wouldn't believe that their wines are any good..in fact, they are. Their Pinot was amazing, as well as the Gold medal winning Cab. We truly enjoyed ourselves.

Any winery with a "three lab cab" named after their three friendly dogs (who happen to be my favourite breed) is off to a good start in my books. Of course the fact that the wine was very good, particularly the chardonnay and the aforementioned three lab cab, was also key. And a taste of chocolate to accompany one of the merlots? Yes please!

I also really enjoyed hearing the story behind the winery and each different wine during the tasting. We also LOVED the chardonnay-infused peanut brittle so much that we had to try an extra sample, just to make sure, and my friend bought a bag.

Overall, a very charming family winery with really friendly staff, unique local artisan products and beautiful vineyards.

The wine is overshadowed for me by the awful fly infestation in and around the winery. The flies here are everywhere, indoors and out, and with open food inside I can hardly believe they haven't been cited by the health department. Also the muddy parking lot will get your car dirty and make you wonder where the high price they charge goes.

The wine itself is pretty decent but I wouldn't ever want to purchase anything here.

My friend and I traveled all around southern Sonoma County to taste Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. We ended up getting a recommendation to visit Larson Family Winery from another family winery down the street. We are so glad we took him up on the recommendation! The service was excellent (a young lady with great knowledge of the family and history of the location).

While it was cold when we visited, we were invited to check out the picnic area with a bocce ball court and horseshoes near the vines. We even tasted a few grapes that were still left on the branches after the harvest.

The wine was among the best we had all day. I especially liked the the 2009 Chardonnay and now have a bottle at home to enjoy with some friends! I'll be back next time I'm in Sonoma to pick up a few more bottles.

They renovated the tasting room, but I honestly liked the old style better. Still, this winery is so far my favorite. I was sad they were out of Wingo White and Sonoma Red (technically not "out" they are waiting for more jugs from Italy).

Maybe after a few more visits I will warm up to the new tasting room...I miss the open air style that it was before.

Good family-friendly winery with a laid back atmosphere. None of that pretentious BS here. They've got a bocce ball area, bean bag toss, plenty of picnic tables, a small grassy area, and even some kid toys. The tasting area is in a modified barn with two bars. The tastings are cheap at $5 -- you get to choose five wines from a list of about 8-10 wines. The cab and meritage were the best ones I've tried.

This place seems to be popular, with two wine tours there during our visit. Service was still friendly and relatively fast with decent pours despite how busy it was. They also have some good marinades (chardonnay and roasted garlic marinade) and olive oil for sale, which we purchased.

Our kid also loved playing with their dogs. There were two that came out to play.

As much as I wanted to like this place, very cute, nice servers, I love labs, etc., the overwhelming aroma of farmyard was more than we could handle just being out & walking around the picnic area, etc.  Then, trying to taste wine when you have the permeating odor of barnyard is almost impossible.

Maybe it was the wind direction . . .

This was one of my favorite tastings.  The staff is very friendly, and it is a very laid back atmosphere.  They have a dog or two wandering around, which is always nice :).  The guy who helped us was very nice and gentle with us newbies, and we appreciated all of the info he imparted on us.  The tasting room has the "barn"-type atmosphere, and it is very open with high ceilings.  The wine was delicious and they also make a chocolate sauce made from one of their reds that is SO GOOD!

Definitely print out this yelp page for a few pieces of chocolate.   I did not know about the peanut brittle otherwise I would have asked for it!

They have a very small campus that consists of a barn and a small patio in the back with a couple tables and benches.  There is a tiny grassy area to play games.  They even have sheep and goats to check out in front.  Although it's small, it's still a great place to bring lunch and enjoy an amazing view of the vineyard.

I'm a complete wine newb and a light weight to boot!  I didn't know the first thing about wine, but our server was very patient and helped me find something I could enjoy.  I'm still not a connoisseur, but at least I learned that I liked fresh fruit wines without dryness at the end.

I'm a fan of their 2009 Pinot Noir Rose and 2009 Gewurztraminer!  There are wineries around Sonoma that have free tastings, but this one was $5, if I recall correctly.  To this day, I wish I had gotten a bottle of their Rose.  Since it was my first winery, I figured I'd find something else I'd like at another winery.  Nope.  Nothing compared to Larson's Rose!

Oh!  And the dogs!  I loved that the dogs roamed the area and guests brought their own dogs into the tasting room!  This place was very informal, open and inviting.  That is the main reason this place gets a 5 star rating from me.  All the guests were happy and the general aura of the place was very pleasant and not at all highbrow.  It's kind of on a beaten path and hard to find while zooming down the road.  I would have never known about this winery if it weren't for you guys on Yelp :)

Wine is solid, and the grounds are even better! Awesome place to have a picnic and enjoy your new purchases. A little tough to find because of the general lack of signage on the highway, but worth the effort.
Oh, and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the awesome dogs. Petting a big happy lab makes wine taste even better.

    Three Lab Cab
    Three Lab Cab
    See how it pours
    See how it pours
We all sped up to the tasting table
Were suckered in by the jug and label
It seemed too good, like a farmer's fable
    This Three Lab Cab.

Drawn in by the name of their famous Cab, we three city folk drove up to Sonoma to check out this dog-inspired wine. As suckers for labs, we couldn't resist the adorable label. Finding this place was more difficult that we thought, but with the help of the local Visitor Center, we took a few right turns, traveled down a rocky narrow path, and landed on this farm/winery/little piece of heaven.

The tastings are $5 for five wines, but like many wineries, the price is comped if you buy something. We went with the red palette and tried a variety of cabs, pinots and merlots.

My favorite was the one that came in a jug... for obvious reasons. It's a special blend of a few grapes depending on the season and what they're feeling. So you could go in a few months and get a completely different sample. Luckily for us, this blend was delicious. They even let me sample it twice before I bought one.

They're cool with you walking around the property between tastings, so after our 3rd glass, we walked outside and had a photo shoot amongst patio furniture, stacked barrels, and rows of grapes in the background. It's a stunning setting that made us keep saying "guys- we LIVE here."

Come for the wine. Stay for the photo shoot. Leave with some nice jugs.

My husband and I were at this winery exactly one week ago today.  As a yellow lab owner, we had to make a stop at this winery to get our fill of some lab lovin' from all four labs running around on the property.  But even more than the adorable labs, we loved the wine!  We cannot say enough good things about this winery, we absolutely loved it!  It was super laid back and everyone was so nice and accommodating.  We especially loved our wine pouring native Chicagoan....Marvin!  He was the best.  This place is totally unpretentious but the Larsons clearly know how to make a good wine.  I am a total city girl and I have no idea why people in past reviews were complaining about the "barnyard" smell in the tasting room...I didn't smell anything besides good wine!  I highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a good wine, nice people and hanging out with some adorable pooches!

I like their jugs. Of wine, that is.:)

Laid-back, nonpretentious family-run winery produces great tasting, quality wines with very reasonable prices. We went up during a clubmember's pickup, and were treated to complimentary tastings (at least 5 or 6), with oysters, cheese, and chips to balance out the buzz.

Although I'm not a member but just accompanying one, I was able to capitalize on their club discount and pick up four jugs of their Sonoma Red, a delightful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Zinfandel, at $10 each instead of $19. Some of the most drinkable wine, either for everyday or special occasions.

Larson Family Winery is located near the entrance to the sonoma valley wine region, near Cline and Gloria Ferrer, a mere hour or so drive from SF. The winery is on a ranch, amidst a scenic backdrop of vineyards, a pond, animals, and horseshoes in the back,  lending to a more folksy atmosphere.

After a less than stellar experience at another Carneros spot, Erin S. and I rolled into Larson Family Winery, hoping to find some good wines. Lucky for us, we found more than we'd hoped for.

The wines at Larson are good, and the staff are very friendly. We learned all about the nearby ghost town, Wingo, which I'd never even heard of.

I didn't have my daughter with me on this particular day, but Larson does have diversions for the little ones. This is smart, because I think people who have kids tend to drink more than people who don't.

Now THIS is my kind of winery! Casual atmosphere, kid & dog friendly, mellow pourers, wine tasting in a barn. What a refreshing change from the other wineries I've visited in Sonoma.

Don't get me wrong, I can rub elbows with the hoity-toity Sonoma-ites at the higher end wineries, but I prefer the relaxed atmosphere of Larson. I don't feel pressured to taste "peaches, vanilla, & burnt caramel" in my wine if I just don't taste it, dammit.

I like that everyone who works here floats from one customer to the next, asking what you'd like to try next while casually chatting it up. For $5 you can basically taste as many wines as you like, because as one pourer mentioned, "There's no wine Gestapo here".

Although I didn't purchase any of their wines (it was the end of the day & I had reached my wine bottle quota for the weekend), I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. **Added bonus, we found out about a ghost town called Wingo at the end of the road. The road is currently closed for the winter, but we plan on checking it out on our next visit!

This is a great example of a smaller, family run, intimate winery.

Tasting Fee: $15/4-5 pours; 8-10 total wines tasted

    Ambiance:
-they recently renovated their tasting room; big and nice
-great snacks, including olive oil and sauces for sale
-location is a bit out of the way
-we were the only people there on a Friday midday

    Service:
    -Intimate, personal

    Wine: $18-$40
I bought two of their wines.  All were good but the 3 Lab Cab and dessert wine were not to be left behind (especially at that price).

    I would return.

This was our second winery on our "Family Friendly Wine Tasting Tour" of which I was quite dubious of, but once again, I was proven wrong.

LOVE Larson Family Winery. What an amazing place to just hang out. There were a ton of people just hanging out in the back having a picnic or a get together. You can bring in your own wine and beer, and it doesn't have to be Larson's.

They have bocce ball, horseshoes, baggo, corn hole and a ton of riding toys for the kids  in the large back area. There are beautiful sunflowers lining the back and the grapes are right there, you can actually go out to the grape fields.

They have 3 labs, the namesakes for their 3 Lab Cab, who just hang out in the back with everyone. So adorable and friendly.

Apparently there is a  petting zoo area with llamas and goats but we somehow missed it. Luckily, we joined the the wine club so we'll be up every other month to pick up our wine so we'll have to find it next time.

It also looks like they have horses which you can ride on with a guide.

It's $5 for 5 tastings, but honestly, they won't stop you at 5 if you want to try more. If you buy a bottle or join the wine club, they wave the $5 fee.

The wine club is a great deal as well. You just have to commit to a case a year or 2 bottles every other month which is $38 and they have a big BBQ on pick up day where you can come with your family and get your shipment but more importantly enjoy the fun, relaxing environment.
    .
Inside there is a little table with coloring books and crayons for the kids to color. My little one sat there for a good 15 minutes (which for a 3 year old is like 2 hours) just coloring.

The grounds aren't as picturesque as some of the other wineries. It's definitely got a down home feel. Just a comfortable place to hang out.

They have these awesome Jugs O Wine for only $9.99 if you're a club member.

Super fun place! Can't wait for the Harvest Party!

This is my kind of winery experience: laid back, good wine, bocce ball, they have dogs and ALLOW DOGS, horseshoes, goats, sheep, corn hole, and ladder ball.

Could you ask for anything more? I don't think so! The tastings are supposedly $5 for 5 tastings, but we got way more than 5 tastings, and were able to get chocolate & peanut brittle pairings included. The pours are generous as well.

To top it off, if you like Labrador retrievers, they have a Cabernet called "Three Lab Cab," which is pretty good. I'm a sucker for anything involving dogs, especially labs, so this pulled me in. They also have a table white wine which comes in a jug which is pretty amazing.

This place is the opposite of a pretentious winery, and in a very good way. You can spend all day here, its wonderful!

My group of 6 took a wine tour and this was one of the stops. It's not a fancy beautiful winery but makes up for that with everything else. First off the owner Chris, who come from a family in Australia of grape growers, was there and walked us around the property telling us the ins and out of his vines and how each section produces different grapes and therefore different wines. It was very educational.

Each wine we tasted was fantastic and the stories behind them really elevated the experience. I would highly recommend this winery and be sure to call ahead to see if Chris will be there.

Attention winos with littles, your happy place has arrived!!

I don't currently have any children that I know of... well, there was that one night in Bakersfield... anyhoo, I don't have spawn, but I do have friends with youngins and the one thing I've observed when it comes to keeping your adult friends near after having children is keeping the alcohol flowing. Do that and still eat out at restaurants and your adult friends will stay. Promise.

Which is why I was excited to get invited to a day of wine tasting with my pal Nish and his son. His son is just over a year old and really hasn't developed much of a palate yet, but hey, give it time, Auntie Stacks will get her way soon enough.

When we arrived, on what was truly a most perfect Sonoma day, I really liked the sign that proudly boasted FAMILY FUN HAD HERE. That is a good start with a mumbling baby in the backseat. When we parked I instantly spotted a chocolate lab sprawled out in the sun. I would like to say for the record that in my next life, I would like to be this dog, cuz man does he have it good. Chillin in the sun at a winery with tons of people stopping to pet him, hello, sign me up!

We then walked out back and saw the Bocce ball set and the horseshoe toss and it had all the makings of a fine afternoon. From there it was off to purchase a few bottles of Meritage and we spent the afternoon lolligagging through the day and it was definitely a delight.

What I loved most about this place is that they really don't rush you. I've never spent hours at a winery do absolutely nothing before. Yes, we were drinking, so I'm sure they were happy, but it was just a really nice feeling. It definitely feels like a little home away from home. That and the people working here were super personable. I would recommend this if you have kids or not, so check it out on your next wine run.

Wifey was out of town, so it was a boys weekend for me and little Dash. Should I take him to the Academy of Sciences? Nah. The Zoo? Done that. Oh I know, how about wine country!

My friend Kevin J organized a small caravan to visit, and the trip started at Larson Family Winery, where he's a wine club member. Aside from the wines, which were actually really enjoyable (and a good deal at $15-20 a bottle, plus they sell jug wine!), the real draw was the laid back atmosphere.

It's a down home, family affair here, with picnic benches for bringing sandwiches, a full bocce court, horseshoes as well. Dash soaked up some sun, crawled all over the place, almost walked, threw a bocce ball or two, got dirty, petted some dogs (but didn't see the llama!), in general led the good life as far as a 15-month year old goes. We could have stayed for hours... oh wait, we did.

    My new favorite in Sonoma!

I had wanted to come here ever since I had a really great, affordable pinot grigio at a dinner in Napa, then when my parents came to town, a few people said Larson was a must if you are from Texas and I was sold. When we drove up, it really felt like I was stopping by a friend's house, it just had a familiar vibe that was very comfortable. The people who worked here were so nice and knowledgeable without being stuck up about it. And there were sleeping dogs everywhere (see pic) which was definitely a plus in my book.

Everything I tasted here I loved but I ended up settling on the Sonoma red, which is fun because it comes in a jug! They also had really tasty treats including some sort of wine brittle that was irresistible.

Bottom line this is a friendly place with a great vibe, good wines and also a pretty spot!

***My winery/tasting room reviews are rated based upon many factors.  First is QPR or quality to price ratio of the wine.  In other words, is the wine priced according to how good it is.  The second factor is the tasting room experience.  This involves the staff, grounds and anything unique about the winery.***

    Date Visited: Late 2008
    Tasting room fee: $5
    Wine price range: $14-$35

We came here on a recommendation.  Larson Family is more of a rustic tasting experience, just the way I like it.  You pull down their dirt road and taste in their new tasting room in the barn.  Very nice staff were on hand to pour.

The wines were good, not earth shattering, but their price reflects this.  These are everyday wines and I found a couple I really liked.  They have gone to mostly screw caps, not my thing exactly but then again for everyday wines this is fine.

They have an assortment of animals here and looks like they offer horseback riding.  This would be a welcome break if you stop in during the middle of a day of wine tasting.

A great family winery with a great sense of humour. When driving in and out of their long dirt driveway, make sure to read the signs hanging from the trees.
Many of the Sonoma wineries did not impress me because they put to much effort into marketing and were filled with the snooty, pretentious people that you stereotypically think go wine tasting.
Larson was small, quiet, beautiful, friendly and had good wine. The people there were friendly and I'm not talking only about the staff. The other patrons were also really nice and my boyfriend and i actually joined a group for a game of lawn bowling out back.

Above all else, the wine was great. I thought that some of the bottles were a bit expensive and weren't quite worth the price. If you are charging $40 for a bottle of wine, it better be one of the best wines I have ever tasted. True, it was good, but not THAT good. Still, all in all, I thought the wine at Larson was the best I had in Sonoma. (Wouldn't pay $40 for it though... but don't worry, there are cheaper things to get that are very good as well.)

Note: if you go to the visitors center and get a "I love Sonoma" sticker and wear it, you will get a 2 for 1 tasting here.

I think I spent thirty minutes petting the ponies in the little pen by the parking lot.  Goats too.  When I finally was pulled away from the animals outside we headed into the barn for some tasting.  Unfortunately I found the wines rather disappointing.  Not quite what this lil lady thirsts for.  The three overheated and lazy dogs sprawled around the tasting room were a better focus for my attention.  I'd come back with others and let them do the tasting while I got in some quality animal time....but if it was a day where I was serious about my wine, I don't think this would be where I would choose to stop.

P.S. Apparently they trained Sea Biscuit here!

This is one of my favorite wineries.  It's casial, laid-back, down-home fun.  the wine isn't spectacular, but's good, and the prices are great.  They have dogs and a gnarly old sheep, lots of outdoor seating, and a big, fun, barn-style tasting room.  The pourers are always cool and friendly, and they give you more than they have to.  The wine brittle is incredible!  I once ate almost the whole plate and the guy just said, "Go for it!"  A blast every time.  You always leave with a smile on your face- and not only because of the wine!

Here's my thinking: Napa sucks. I've found a total of three Napa wines I enjoy.

Sonoma, on the other hand, rules beyond all belief. I've found so many great wines in Sonoma that I'm seldom worried about trying a new something.

The last time I was in Sonoma, I got a taste at Larson and was pretty impressed. I like my wine sweet, and most of the stuff they poured had at least hints of sweetness that made me happy. The Late Harvest Chardonnay was pricey, but worth every penny. I mean, that stuff is just boss beyond all comprehension. It's made it's way into my Top Ten Wines.

This winery had a llama out by the parking lot.  Need I say more?  Unlike other wineries in the area, this one has the potential to be family friendly, as they plan to design a petting zoo next to the barn.

The wine is pretty good too, and the bottles are affordable.

This winery was definitely off the beaten path.  The place was warm, charming and had great wine.  I particularly enjoyed their Chardonnay also it was a very, well, fun feel with bocce ball courts and horse shoes.  Not a bad way to spend a warm Saturday afternoon.

Off on a dirt road.. it's a barn. We parked on the side of the road. They have horses. They have wine. For April in Carneros, they had OYSTERS! (limit 1=() COOKIES! POPCORN!

Out back they had bocce ball, picnic tables, a bounce house, a dog, and a book on winery dogs with its face on the cover.

I was pretty wasted by this time but coming here didn't kill the buzz at all. Lots of fun.. They really put out for a festival.

A lone star for this totally odd, Texas-western-style winery complete with massive bullcows, odd covered wagons, and cowboy boots. I was totally entertained by the wild decor and rodeo grounds, but the wine definitely did not entice me. The flavors were young, explosive, and unrefined. It's good if you're looking for strong wines - which was definitely NOT what we wanted. And they were a bit more expensive ($20 - $30) per bottle.

I felt totally out of place except for the fact that I was wearing jeans. But I appeared to be missing the prerequisite cowboy boots, spurs, chaps, lasso, horse, cowboy hat, and gun.

The service was not very good, either; the girl at the counter did not offer any explanation behind the wines, but was very knowledgeable about the New Year's parties in SF.

So, my lone star is for uniqueness. And... 4 deducted for just about everything else.

I thought that a southern/Texas style winery would be a little quirky and odd, and truth be told I wasn't sure what to expect.  Would they even know how to make wine, or should they turn their Californian efforts to inevitably failed barbeque?  And the first thing that caught my eye were the funny signs and a random goat on a barrel (you read that correctly).

But truth be told, despite my trepidation, I found this place to be humble, homey, and have great wine.  Although not all of them were my favorites, they had a long list of tasting wines for $5 (refundable if you purchase) and my favorites were the first Chardonnay and the Gerwurtz.  The Chardonnay was perfectly balanced and the Gerwurtz made me think of sipping summer in a glass.  The barnlike atmosphere and nice servers (albeit a bit busy and understaffed) made this one of my favorite places.

Like V. Sattui (one of my favorites over in Napa) you can't buy their wines from stores, which made it feel that much more special.  SIX of their first Chardonnay or Gerwurtz were on special for $50, which comes out to less than $10 of solid, good wine.  Crazy.

Go in with an open mind and just enjoy what they have.

As I was leaning more on a 3..5 at my initial review I have bumped it up to a 4.  The winery owners sent me a message that included thanking me for the review and explaining it may have been a new hire and that they would share my concerns with the staff and thanking me for my review.  I appreciate them taking the time to read the reviews and respond to my concerns. I think it can be rare now a days for companies to take such an interest in the customer experience and that counts a lot in my books especially when thinking about what wineries I want to go back to.

Very family and dog friendly winery. This place is very mellow and homey with lots of cowboy decor. Bob our pourer was very nice and welcoming. The only thing was that none of the wines excited me. I only liked their Sonoma Red jug, which was fun and juicy. Great hospitality, but the wines just weren't there for me. I would try them again though.

I really loved my experience here.  Very friendly down to earth people are running this joint!  Years ago, it was my very first wine tasting

Plus- they introduced us to Robledo's Family Winery which we would have never found on our own!

Larson Family Winery is pretty awesome. Let's recap:

-They have 3 labs; a chocolate, a black, and a yellow. We only saw the yellow and chocolate, but they were HUGE and ADORABLE.

    -They play country music.

-The setting is totally country; beautiful views, very down-home and relaxed... a great Sonoma atmosphere.

-Pourers are awesome. The girl pouring for us was very chatty, knowledgeable, and helpful. She also told us about their wine club, but did not at all push us, which I appreciated.

-Wines are yummy! Minus a star because I think the wines are a little overpriced for how good they are. Still we left with 2 bottles. Try the Merlot. MMMM.

Beautiful surroundings, very calming mood. Staff is very friendly. Tasting costs 5$ and you get a tasting. Just a tiny sip to try.

They have a nice picnic/play area.

The vine is not that good. It is not bad but I would expect more from place like this. But maybe it is just me.

The place is GREAT for a large group and VERY family friendly. There's a ton to do there, bocce ball court, horseshoes, baggo/corn hole, a coloring station for kids, and a bunch of riding toys for toddlers. Apparently, there's a petting zoo there too, but somehow we missed it. Three very friendly and cool labs walk around the lot to further add to the environment.

The wine tasting is $5 for 5 tastings, but they are very upfront about saying they'll certainly give you more than 5 tastings. The other nice part about the tasting is that you don't have to sit there for the entire tasting. You can walk around and then come back for your subsequent tasting. Definitely going back there. The wine is good and prices are decent, but really I'm going back for the great people who work there and the great, family friendly environment.
