Pillboxes..
Done it in slippahs.
Better run den hike. Also a nice jaunt to tack onto an afternoon if you are already spending it at LaniKai.
This hike is for freakin' couples. Not to say it's full of breeders around every rock and shrubbery, however I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if I looked hard enough. We've all been there. Trail level? I say beginners.
As for the trail itself, it's nice. Located in a primo part of the Kailua beach community. This hike is not only short but is packed niceley with spectacular views and wind-in-your face goodness. One banana! Two banana! Actually, I was counting the pillboxes/bunkers at the top. The first marks the 3/4 point, where the pinnacle is short to come.
More experienced hikers would laugh at the shortness of this trali vs the enlarged prostatae of mountains they've travailed in the past. Next time, don't walk but run! Yea right, like you want people to think your struggling when you reach the top.

Lanikai Pali hike in Kailua
Great short hike to get you nice and warm for the beach. Get there early because there aren't too many parking spots. I suppose if you were desperate and feeling lucky, you could try and park in the country club.
Follow the chain link fence and you will see the start of the hike. The first 10 minutes is the toughest as here there isn't very good traction.
But after this its okay...its still all uphill, but the views make it well worth it. You will come across two old pill boxes along this hike. The ridge hike is amazing.... you get views of Kaihau and sweeping views of the ocean.
I would go in the morning as its not a hot and there is a nice cool breeze coming off the ocean. And with all the fragrant flowers, like hibiscus and plumeria the air smells as if perfume is being sprayed into the air.
Most people refer to this hike as "Pillboxes." It's a short but sweet one. One way probably takes about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace. The first half of the hike is probably the most strenuous because of the incline and the loose rocks and dirt. As you're walking up along the ridge you can see some great views of Lanikai and Moks. There are two different "pillboxes," or World War II bunkers that you can sit atop and enjoy the view from. There's also some colorful graffiti (not sure if that's a good thing) inside the bunkers, which make for some cool photo ops.
If this hike isn't tough enough for you, I've seen a few people running up it. It's a good hike for kids or dogs. I hiked it in slippers, but I imagine shoes would make it easier especially for that initial part. And hydrate yourself!
Nice view of the mokes, and you'll really see the transitional shades of blue from the shore to the endless horizon.
After the first 5 minutes or so, it gets alot easier. Hardly anyone comes out here except some friendly locals walking their dogs and a few athletic types running around.
Bring some water and trail shoes.
It ain't a park. You don't park there, either yer car or yer ass. Ya hike da damned thing. Up and along da ridge to and past da pillboxes. freaking great view of Ka'ohao, such that you see da community as if it were a lil doll house thang. Fab view of da Mokes. While in Lanikai, you see others doing da hike. You can be there, that could be you! Have been doing it since da 60's, having grown up on A'alapapa.
(Jeeeezeus Keerist, ya don't know how frikken hard it was to get this damned thing posted.)
As mentioned, "too short" for a hike, but the view is literally, breathtaking.
The first 10 minutes will be a challenge for anyone with bad knees, back, or at least not minimally in shape. After that, there are a few areas of loose gravel and the trail often goes right to the edge.
Good shoes a must and bring water as there is no shade.
But do not hesitate to undertake this, the experience is phenomenal!!
A little too short for a "hike" but there are very nice views and old military "pillboxes" to explore. Worth the short climb 600' or so.
