Hubby & I grabbed lunch at the Village Market in Santa Rosa & headed south into the Sonoma Valley looking for a place to have a nice glass of wine & a picnic.  I had flagged Landmark as a possible picnic place in my Insider's Guide to Wine Country (which we left in the hotel room), so we had an idea where we were going but really were just wandering aimless on a lovely sunny Wednesday afternoon.

Saw a sign for "picnic area" off on the east side of Hwy 12 & lo and behold it was Landmark -- Yay!  We stopped & went into the tasting room -- only one other couple there -- and visited with the wine guide for a minute or two.  She recommended a split of their Pinot Noir to go with our sandwiches, so we grabbed a bottle & she gave us two glasses and we went & sat out on their patio by the beautifully landscaped pond and patio area.

The Pinot was excellent (a bit pricey at $22 for a split) & went well with our italian meat sandwiches.  The vineyard was in mid-harvest, so we were able to watch the guys working the fields and enjoyed the scenery around the vineyard.  The walnut trees were starting to drop their nuts, so every now & then a walnut would come tumbling down too.  There's a horseshoe pit & bocci ball yard too -- so could be a great place for a group.

We didn't stay for a full tasting, but when we go back to Sonoma, it will definitely be on our list.  FYI -- there is a coupon for a tasting in the e-concierge booklet, so look around for it.  Also -- they have a small refrigerator with some nice looking sandwich meats and cheeses in it, if you don't bring your own picnic goodies.

If you like chardonnay, this is a great place for you - if you don't, it's not going to be your best stop.

I'm down with the chard, so I checked out Landmark on Friday and had a blast! The staff is totally cool and offered up great conversation and service. We bought a couple of bottles and toured the garden which was beautiful and relaxing.

The Damaris Reserve Chardonnay is lovely - I thought it was by far the standout wine - smooth with oak flavors and exactly what I think most people look for in a mid/higher end chard. My girlfriend loved the Lorenzo, but it was really too lemony for me in a chardonnay - I guess that's the beauty of flavors though, everyone can find their own :)

These guys really know how to partay! Movie nights on the lawn are a BLAST. See a classic, sipping chard, paired with gourmet popcorn on a spectacular Sonoma night. Check there website for details.

Great, warm, friendly staff..If you like tractor people :-0) (you will figure this out when you arrive and start asking questions)

If your going wine tasting,as a general rule,DONE BE CHEAP. You will embarrass yourself and your companion/guests in the process.

I like Sonoma because there are some real characters, fewer tourists and the land itself isnt dotted with corporate wineries.

Pretty winery.  Nice garden.  Boccie court for an hour of fun in the sun.

The tasting room is just 500 square feet yet elegant.

Wine quality is high, prices are mid-tier. Mostly in the $20 - $30 per bottle range.

Park the car and walk up the street to Kaz winery (That's a whole 'nother take on wine marketing!)  or down the street to the Vineyards Inn for lunch.

This is a medium sized winery - not quite boutique but not a cattle call like Viansa. The Chardonnay is indeed worth the stop and as others have mentioned, the staff are very pleasant and knowledgeable.

We only came here because we just finished hiking at Gunsight Rock in Sugarloaf SP..so we needed to use a bathroom.  Just our luck the place was still open.

Nice looking place.  They had a special event happening outside so we couldn't look around too much.  The tasting room has FREE tasting of current release but my friends didn't want to try them..wtf!!  So I didn't try either.  I did grab a cheese appetizer thingie which was fine.

Bathrooms available: separate men & women near the tasting room.

On summer weekends (noon-3pm) they offer guided vineyard tours in a horse-drawn wagon.  On the pond-side picnic area is a nice view where you can enjoy lunch or a game of Bocce (didn't see anyone playing).

Open daily from 10am-4:30pm

The place looked nice from the outside, but the wines were average at best.  Nothing was that memorable, so I am not sure I would stop here.  They said they were known for their whites, but I didn't think they were that great.

The people were friendly and you get to keep the glass after your tasting, but it's probably not worth the trip.

Landmark is one of my must-do's every time I'm in Sonoma.  Everyone is so nice and knowledgable ... they love talking about their wines and are real enthusiasts.  We've been in the wine club for a few yrs and are continually impressed.
Check out their website for info on renting their cottage for the night/weekend.
Ryan Hortum is the wine club manager and is awesome.

I used to like Landmark a whole lot. They have absolutely gorgeous gardens and really, really nice, friendly, smart, and hip pourers who have done neat things like the Peace Corps. I used to think that their pinots were to die for.

But that was before I learned that they are really, really expensive for a wavering product. For example, I liked nothing there when I went last week, whereas times past I have adored everything. I am willing to pay a lot for a nice bottle of wine as long as quality is commensurate. I left Landmark disappointed.

I find their wines outstanding.  No complaints here.  The chardonnays and the pinots are to die for.  Some even send me straight to heaven.

Do you like Burgundy? Well, they learned how to make it here with Helen Turley's guidance in the cellar and it shows.  I'm not much of a Chardonnay guy, but I love their single vineyard PInot Noirs. A very good Burgundy house in Sonoma, with a great garden for tasting.

There is no place that combines intelligent staff with a breath taking locale like Landmark. The Overlook Chardonnay is top notch and somem thing to keep for a special occasion. After you sample some of the wines, kick off your shoes and spend some time in the back garden area playing bocce. An afternoon at Landmark is something you'll treasure.
