As far as dive bars in Austin are concerned, this might be the best of them. (I mean that affectionately.)
i feel like i'm in twin peaks when i'm in this place. can't say that i've stayed long though every time that i've gone. they have ziegenbock on tap. i don't think my cat will even touch that stuff. the smokers ban doesn't seem to matter here. so, if you don't mind smelling like a bingo parlour, then this is your place. i would recommend going at least once.
leslie l's review is the best review of this place...
the crowd is totally mixed, and the jukebox is F'in amazing.
We'd go to Lala's before it got hip, and though the decor is amusing and the old ladies are hysterical, their drinks are very, very weak, and not cheap. Nothing is more depressing than listening to "New York, New York" while broke and stone cold sober.
One of the best dives along Burnet road, hands down, also because they have a foosball table and pool table :). The jukebox plays classics such as Sinatra, Cash, and Deano and even has Christmas albums in it!! Only thing is I wish they could leave the door open or something because MAN practically everyone is smoking. Be prepared to walk out of this bar smelling like an ashtray and running for some Visine.
Christmas cheer all the year, as the saying goes at Lala's. This is one of the true dives in Austin, and I say that because the bar has the most palpable sadness of any place I've been in since the Wild Turkey back in Dallas. The left over Christmas decorations make it feel not like Christmas, but like December 29th, when the holiday is done and your over stuffed and the fighting amongst the relatives has gone full blown and all you want to do is go home. Plus, they still smoke in here without regard for the law, and having been away from it for so long, you realize how much it really stinks. I know a lot of folks love this joint, and I love a good dive, but this one is low on my list. Too depressing, and I don't like ordering a drink from a woman who looks like my grandmother, it just seems disrespectful.
I love this place. A bar you can sit in and converse with people without having to compete with a sound system polluting the airways with second-hand noise.
I really like Christmas, therefore I really like this place. It's nothing fancy, complete dive bar with a pool table (single pool table) and juke box (the real deal with oldies). Normally you will find small groups of friends that look like they live around the corner in one of the adjoining neighborhoods. You will probably see a couple good ol boys at the bar, looking like they just got off work at the auto shop or electric company. This is a blue collar bar with wide spread appeal. They serve beer in cans, let you smoke and maybe - just maybe will greet you with a smile. This is the kind of place that you want to take an out of town friend (a comfortable and casual friend) that you haven't seen in a while. Sit at a table in the bar area (not by the bathrooms) and just drink beer after beer and talk undisrupted. Another way I like Lala's is if it is part of the Burnet Pub Crawl. This is a great stop on the strip as you bounce from dive bar to dive bar. There are many "legends" in Austin - this one is really neat. It's a must if you've never been.
