You know when you get a haircut, and you have to put on a happy face because your stylist still has sharp objects in their hand? So you pretend that it's great.....then you run home and agonize in the mirror for hours, figuring that maybe in the time that it took you to get home, your hair has grown at least 0.00001 inches, and it'll grow out in no time.

Ok, this is not the experience I've had here. In fact, quite the opposite. Although I was admittedly a bit nervous when I was matched up with Becky because we are so different (her straight-forward and no-frills, me mumbling and indecisive), I haven't been happier with my hair in years. For a change, my hair is healthy AND the style that I want it. I've only been to her a few times so far, but I defintely think she's a keeper.

That aside, what puts me at ease is the wide array of clients that walk in through the door... from Center City suits to your classic NoLibs hipsters, young, old, men, women, women with little lap puppies...reminds me that I'm not in a hair cutting factory and that if I wanted to go with a more extreme change, they'd probably find a way to make it work for me.

Also, great support staff, always extremely friendly. Pricey, yes, but I've paid more for terrible service and bad results... so i find it's worth it.

Why does red dye have to fade into orange? Ugh, my crazy two-toned-colored hair was begging me for a hair cut so I made an appointment at Lakshimi. Since I didn't know the difference between a Master and  Junior stylist, other than the price, the receptionist paired me with a junior stylist, Kaylyn. Here's a quick rundown of my appointment:

-I was greeted warmly and offered some coffee, water and tea.
- My stylist came by and gave me a quick hair consultation.
-Had my hair washed, and the lady apparently doesn't like Dove shampoo because she noticed the "smell" in my hair.
-During my hair cut, I was told a Flyers player was sitting around the mirror (corner) from me!
-Star gazed at the supposed Flyers player and then realized I don't know anyone/anything in/about Hockey.
-Zoned out and noticed that guys like Lakshimi too because the guy/girl client ratio was about even.
-Paid $50 for my haircut with a credit card and was told tip had to be in cash. So I awkwardly fumbled for cash then noticed the ATM in the back.

I have tried several salons since moving to Philly and I am so glad to have finally found Liz at Lakshmi. She did a fabulous job on my colour, keeping it dark without looking unnatural, which is difficult to do. The cut she gave me was exactly what I asked for and so flattering. Then one of the owners, Robin, applied lashes that my friends were so impressed with. I walked out feeling like a million dollars for less than two hundred bucks. My search is over-huzzah!

I just followed my stylist here from American Mortals, and as much as I was afraid of this switch, I truly am glad she did it.  This salon is much more professional with better and a wider selection of products.  The assistant staff were so sweet too!  Not to mention the the place was beautiful on the inside.  Awesome!

My first haircut/color in Philly!  I also have done zero hair styling since September, so my color was a bit "unnatural" (two tones with bad roots).

Lauren did an amazing job!  My hair looks gorgeous and she listened to what I needed and used great professional judgment.  I loved her and I loved feeling pampered in the salon overall.  They serve tea, hang up your coat for you, it's nice.

My only criticism is that I thought it was not going to be as pricey as it turned out to be.  It was kind of a shock, but whatever - I look good and I needed it!  Awesome, Awesome!!!

I've waited a year to cut my hair because
#1 - I didn't want to let go of my highlights that were a-w-e-s-o-m-e
#2 - I was scared to face city prices in hair salons
#3 - I'm going home soon.

But, lately, my hair was just getting unmanageable.  My highlights looked bad because my hair grew and they just looked odd.  My hair just didn't really fall on my face nicely anymore.

I've looked and looked for hair salons since January.  Got a coupon for Bubbles.  That promotion expired.  Searched some more.  Forgot about it.  Ah what the hell, I need a haircut.  I stumbled upon this one looking through the Events posted on Yelp.

I'm a student. I've waited a year for a haircut.  This place was definitely reasonably priced for my liking.  The student and children discounts run Tuesdays and Wednesdays only FYI.  Perfect.  I asked for a stylist instead of a senior or master stylist, so clearly I'm very cheap :-P

BUT the service I received there was definitely the best I've received in a while! I had Janine and she was awesome.  The stylists had a light day (probably due to the rain) and got their hair did for their big bash for First Friday this week.  And Janine's mom was there for some services as well.  But I was definitely not left in the cold.  She listened to what I wanted and was very careful not to go too short or scissor-happy with my hair which was great.  My highlights are nearly gone and now look like funky tips at the end of my locks.

The staff here are really welcoming.  After traversing in the rain from Center City to Olde City and to come into a hair salon and be asked if I need a glass of water, just lovely.  I know that's the fanfare of other places as well, but under the circumstances, it was very welcome.

My hair and I am so ready for summer :)  And for my upcoming days and nights of studying for finals ;)

I've followed Robin from Strands to East End to Lakshmi and have yet to be dissapointed! She is unbelievably talented and is honestly one of the nicest people you'll ever meet!
The vibe of the salon is chill, staff are friendly, can't say enough good things about this place!

Lakshmi Hair Studio  is the new salon owned by former Strands cutter extraordinaire, Danielle Carr.

Danielle has been cutting mine and my boyfriend's (and his ex-girlfriends, and all my best girls') hair for a long time now.

She is sweet, friendly, and oh so talented.  Danielle wants to give you the cut you are dreaming of but can't explain.  She can see the shape you need cut in to your tresses, and make it reality.

If you are searching for a new cutter who never inflicts her "vision" on to your head, go see Danielle and let your hair fantasies come true.

For real.

Just went last night and had a great hair cut! Becky cut my hair and although I am pretty straight laced and she is more alternative, she gave me a great cut! The lady who shampooed my hair (Alicia?) did an amazing job and massaged my neck as well (amazing!). The products are all natural, which is great (I hate all those chemicals!) and better for your hair in the long run. I came out with a great cut and super shiny hair- heads were turning as I walked back home- cant wait to come back and get some color!

This place really is as good as everyone says.  I have curly hair, which always presents a challenge when finding a good colorist/stylist, but after several months of hiatus I decided I couldn't deal with it anymore and had to do something ASAP.  I turned to Yelp to help me find a new place, and Lakshmi stood out as the clear winner.  I made an appointment with Danielle (the owner) and she did an amazing job.  It certainly wasn't cheap -over $300 for cut, color and product when it was all said and done- but that was about 6 weeks ago and the color has lasted and the layers are growing gracefully.  I have spent similar amounts at other places, but this has definitely lasted the longest.  Danielle listened to what I wanted, but also offered her professional opinion as to what she thought would work best for my hair type, face shape and skin tone.  Of course, she was right.  Five stars all around!

As my glorious red hair faded to orange, I got a little antsy to return to something a little more natural before going to visit my parents.  I called around to my previous success stories, and they were all booked up.  Puttering around on Yelp landed me on Lakshmi's stylish website - superficiality is the name of the game, and they had me at graphic beauty.  Not to mention they found an opening for me that afternoon!
This place is open and clean and just as gorgeous as she seemed to be on the Internet.  What happened next could have ended in disaster and tears... when I said "blond", Robin took my hair's side and resisted a full-on bleach-out, suggesting instead that we cover it up with an ashy shade to mask the orange until nature took its course.  I was terrified, and she wasn't kidding when she said it might look dark to me.  Had this happened anywhere else, I'd have gone running for the quickest fix CVS had to offer me, but the longer I sat, the more I liked it.  Throw a cute cut into the mix and I knew I'd be okay.  These gals did me right.
