OMG! Steam room!
*sizzle*
The b/f and myself have been going to LVAC since it opened and replaced our old beloved sweatshop. For the price, we have not been able to find a better deal in the area. However, this seems to be the most compelling reason we've kept our membership.
Pros
1. Facility is very clean
2. Equipment is new
3. Reasonable membership rate
Cons
1. Not enough space dedicated to free weights, not near enough flat benches
2. Wasted studio space...the entire front of the gym is a waste of space with cafe tables, but guess what? They don't serve food or protein shakes...just a vending machine - so what is the point?! They had free coffee for about a month, and then cheaped out and no longer offer it. Trying to get a water bottle when we joined was like pulling teeth!...we must have asked about 50 times for a piece of shit water bottle and everytime they said they only reserve them for new members. Well um, excuse me you didn't give us one when we became new members! Don't act like your 25 cent water bottles are gold. At sweatshop we could get one anytime we forgot ours.
3. Personal trainers who act like they're doing you a favor, when we've actually overheard/seen them giving terrible advice. Trying to make this really skinny 60 yr old man who had never worked out before bench wayyyyy too much weight, it was ridiculous. Plus, the personal trainers act like you're in their way if you haven't purchased session with them.
4. They are only open until 11p, but kick you out around 1040p
5. The gym is always crowded, especially during peak times - we've had to wait for machines
5. Staff is not friendly.
I could go on, but I think this will suffice.
I've been a member since the place first opened and it's the nicest gym I've ever belonged to.
It's never too busy (even during peak hours), it's clean, and it has a wide variety of options for working out.
The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that I can't play basketball at this gym and they don't allow you to access their sister gym LPAC to play.
Otherwise, it's great.
I love,love,love LVAC!
I joined this gym when it first opened a few years ago mostly because it was walking distance from my apartment. Any gym that doesnt smell like a gym, gets bonus points for me.
It is a little bit pricey, but totally worth it. There are also discounts available for students, teachers, artist, community organizers, and just about any other profession you can think of.The variety of classes is great, and all the instructors are amazing. You can't beat the roof top pool in the summer either.
I one had to cancel my card and forgot to update my payment info at the gym. I was very happen to find out that my fee would only be $5 (other gyms can really get you when that kind of thing happens) .I have since moved out of the neighborhood, and even work at another gym but still have my membership, because its that good.
Here's the deal.
The rock climbing class is awesome! The facilities are top notch. The instructor comes with a lot of experience and knows how to teach.
You've just been yelped in.
I hate you Lakeview Athletic Club! You stole my groovy Sweatshop and forced me to go to a scary gym where nobody really has to work out since they're all gorgeous anyway. I gave it a good effort, but I finally canceled my membership.
Globo Gym isn't supposed to win!!!
Bad vibes from the moment I walked in. I've never once had a club ask to make a photo ID of my Driver's License BEFORE talking with someone about memberships. The lady at the desk said I had to show it or I wouldn't get to talk with anyone. I played along...loosing interest by the minute.
So I go through the motions of talking with someone about a regular membership: $150 enrollment fee, $110 monthly dues. Student rate is $75 enrollment fee, $65 monthly dues. The membership gal I spoke with said she'd knock the enrollment down to $25 if I signed up today. The catch: a one-year contract that's virtually unbreakable unless you transfer more than 25 miles away or get someone you can transfer your membership to--but there are little fees and percentages they charge, so you'll be screwed either way.
And that's where I draw the line: contracts. I don't mind month to month, but I refuse to sign my life away for a whole year. The Lakeview neighborhood is one of the most transient areas, and they know this, hence the yearly contract.
The club itself is very nice...very clean...the usual aerobic equipment you'd expect to find in a gym like this. The indoor and outdoor pools are comically small for a gym with so many members--tiny and can't handle more than 3 people doing laps in either pool. The men's locker room is ok. I didn't notice any toiletries--no combs, Q-tips, mouthwash, razors, etc. Just a hair dryer and towels.
This place just doesn't seem right for me. The tacky enrollment fee (even though they have me for a year), the tiny pools, no free new member orientation (you have to hire an on-staff trainer to learn how to use the equipment), and the year-long commitment I'd have to sign put me off. The whole place feels so polished and corporate, in a neighborhood that should be neither.
Yes, the 'B' stands for Booty, but too much junk in the trunk can be bad. I mean, only when my jeans get a little snug. I love my ba-dunk-a-dunk but damn if I'm buying bigger pants.
Chicago has done a number on me. Too many delicious restaurants and way too many Yelp parties (and Yelp friends) have lead me to drink and eat more than a lady should. This has caused a little more of Sarah B. to love. Enter LVAC!
I like to work out but only if my gym makes me feel like I'm going to the spa. When I was younger and living with my folks I belonged to a super-cushy (read: expensive) gym. I loved going there and really great work-outs were the result.
I knew if I was going to get my butt in gear I had to find another cushy gym. Except I this time I don't have the luxury of little to no bills like I did when I was younger. LVAC offers a really great deal for students and since I am currently taking online classes, I qualified. It is still fairly expensive but you get what you pay for.
LVAC boasts a super clean locker room with plenty of fluffy, clean towels, a steam room and sauna, and self locking lockers. Two swimming pools, tons of cardio machines, massage, and about a billion classes running at all times of day and evening. I'm sold.
Situated right between work and home, I should have no problem stopping in most days. Next time you see me the booty will be a little more bootylicious.
Ahhhhhh....as soon as I walk in I feel I'm being pampered. This is no ordinary gym; say goodbye to Bally's folks. I've been an LVAC member for 5 months now and I just love this place! The front desk employees greet you with a smile and make you feel like you've just entered a building full of friends. And the locker rooms...oh the locker rooms with their saunas, steam rooms, waterfall showers, and wooden lockers with dial locks, smell spa-heavenly.
The gym is 4 floors of machines (with your own personal TV), free weights, a spinning room, a pilates/yoga room, an aerobics room, both an indoor and an outdoor pool, and my personal favourite...a 50 foot, state-of-the-art climbing wall.
I'm climbing about 3-4 times a week and, as a first time climber, I've found the climbing community to be inviting and quite encouraging. They are instantly there to help you reach that next hold, push yourself when you're scared to just go for it, and get in a really good laugh.
For those interested in classes, they have a very hardy list; from your typical spinning, step, and yoga classes to Zumba (an aerobic class for all you latin dance lovers out there), Danseafric (get the sweat pouring with African dance moves), relaxing Qigong, and pre/postnatal yoga.
They are SUPER kid friendly. Offering swimming and climbing lessons and of course, a fun and fitness-based kids club.
This is the first time I have actually enjoyed going to the gym because now I don't feel like I'm walking into a sweat stinking, sticky, antisocial cave; rather, I'm walking into a loungy spa to tone up and de-stress.
LVAC, we started out with such a passionate love affair....the breakup was a messy one though.
I should have ran away in the beginning when they asked me to sign my life away. So I joined effective Jan 1, 2008 not knowing I would decide move to a different 'hood effective Oct 2008.
So in September I called them up and told them I had to cancel due to moving. They're like, oh you're not moving 25 miles away so BOOM you have to keep paying until Jan 2009!
NoooOOOOooOOO!!! They said someone else could take over my membership but no one I know wants to pay $165 a month for a gym membership. All my friends go to the YMCA where you can cancel at any time and you pay $45 a month. I was F***ed. So I kept paying for a gym I never used from September to January. Gahhh!!! UGH!! (more disapproving sound effects)....
BUT when I lived accross the street from the LVAC I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I almost wanted to shower there every day instead of my own shower at home because of the wonderful two-head-ed showers...sighhh I will miss that. The machines were easy to use and my bod never looked as good as it did when I went to LVAC.
LVAC, I still miss you and so do my abs, wherever they are. They're hiding somewhere in my tummy yearning for you....
The break up sucks, folks. Whatever you do, dont cancel unless you 1) already know someone who wants to take over your membership or 2) only have like a month to go in your contract...
ps- if you dont like kids, dont go on family days...I wanted to pull my hair out in the locker room on family days. Control your kids, people!
You get what you pay for, always.
I joined here with zeal and enthusiasm, because of the rock climbing wall and the outdoor roof top pool, and primarily for the low, low everyday price of $65/monthly, one free month and no initiaition fee.
But damn, trying to figure out when the climbing wall and pools, and family swim would be available this holiday weekend was an "if-and-but whose-on-first" NIGHTMARE. It was so confusing the desk staff had to call managers and ask questions by leaving voicemail messages.
Am I messed up or would a holiday weekend be a time to EXTEND family hours, not to curtail them?
I'll take what they're giving at $65/mo, with gratitude. But now I know what to expect.
Since I can't give it 2.5 stars, I'll be generous and add a half star. LVAC is just okay. Nothing to get too excited about. The equipment is new and all cardio stations have their own tv. The staff and trainers are friendly. I think the clientele is what brings down the ratings.
~You've got the same crowd of questionable anorexics on the cardio equipment every time you go......no matter what time that may be.
~The corporate dude who talks LOUDLY on his cell phone while using the stationary bike. Mind you, there are NO CELL PHONE signs posted all over.
~The older woman who insists on lugging her bag, purse, coat, etc, with her around the gym. Hey lady.....there are *FREE* lockers for that crap.
~The sweaty metrosexual men who never wipe down the weight equipment after lifting. Very sanitary. Not sure if they noticed the handiwipe type cleaner available.
~The **TeRRibLE** techno music in the weight room. I usually pinch myself to make sure I am not in an alternate universe where I was accidently droppped into Hydrate at 4am after taking ectasy. Nope.
~The soccer moms who get on the treadmill and proceed to blab on and on about their disposable diaper service. Best part of it all is they have to talk over the noise of the treadmills and other people working out. I don't want to be able to hear your intimate conversation two rows over. Shouldn't you be EXERCISING your body and not your mouth?? Go to Starbucks then.
Call me grouchy. But I prefer a gym with people who are there to get a great workout. *Not* socialize.
I've been a member at LVAC for almost a year and have nothing, but positive things to say. The staff has always been helpful and friendly, there are tons of free classes to take, the entire complex is always very clean and always maintained, the rock wall is among the best in the city, the machines are new and always all functional, and each cardio machine has its own TV, making working out that much easier.
I've been a member of several gyms and for me this is by far the best! I'm not the biggest fan of working out or spending time in the gym, but LVAC is so bright, spacious, and airy I always enjoy being there!! Highly Recommended!
I love this gym, in fact I'm considering raising my unborn children in Lakeview just so I never have to go to another gym. I know, it seems a little drastic, especially since the place is pretty expensive.
So here are the few drawbacks: the swimming pool downstairs is small, even less than 25 yards, as well as the outdoor pool on the roof. Also, in the winter months it is wicked packed on the cardio machines right after work (5:30-7pm) and there isn't a great system for waiting for a treadmill-I almost fought a girl for a treadmill who jumped in front of me in line, but I'm passive aggressive so I just waited for the next one.
Despite that, the equipment is pristine, there are TVs on each machine which keeps me on longer, great weights and wonderful classes. There is a 7:30pm weight class with Zach that I attend like it's church. The instructors are enthusiastic, funny and really good at motivating people. From spinning to weights to kick boxing, it's all great and very comfortable. Everyone is friendly, accomodating and the locker rooms are amazing. Those showers are luxurious---I almost want to shower there before work for the dual shower heads! Saunas and hot tubs, highly recommended.
Need a change of pace and have some disposable income? Join LVAC, it could be the atmosphere that you need to change your lifestyle and keep your fitness goals.
( + ) Cardio. and endurance training through classes along with being social while working out in my opinion is LVAC's biggest draw. Their free weight section is definitely adequate as well. The classes put on by the the training staff are top notch (spinning, yoga, abdominal / core training classes, swimming, climbing, stepping, etc. all in a new, clean, and well laid out building).
( - ) If your more into pumping steel / intense weight training and would like to save some money; I think you'll be happier at an different gym. Recommend Xsport Fitness.
I enjoyed my time there and will consider going back, they did offer discount memberships when they opened based upon profession IE teacher, student, gov. etc. Look into it before you sign up!
this place is not a meat market but it is E. Lakeview.
I was a member of Evanston Athletic Club (EAC), which is a sister club of LVAC. I joined LVAC hoping that it'd be very similar to EAC. However, I found out otherwise: it's much superior.
As a teacher, I get a membership discount. My membership rate is $65/month, which is a steal compared to their full rate. As many others have mentioned, the rate is well worth what you get. Two pools, entire floors devoted to cardio, strength, etc. There is a large spinning room and climbing wall on the first floor and an exercise studio on one of the upper floors.
I tend to go very, very early in the morning so there is never a crowd. However, lately I've been going after work. I've yet to have a problem with a lack of available machines. There seems to be plenty of equipment for everyone to use.
I don't use the strength equipment. Rather, I'm a cardio guy. I absolutely love the new cardio machines that they have. The machines are well kept, clean, and well equipped in tech gizmos to keep you occupied. For example, the ellipticals and treadmills both have a USB slot for you to record your work out data. In addition, they have their own iPod connection so you can control your iPod directly from the machine (which is great for those of us who can't read the tiny iPod screen). Furthermore, you can connect your iPhone to it and not get an "Incompatible Accessory" error.
Each of the cardio machines has its own TV. Some of the TVs get very poor reception; even though its digital cable. What impresses me the most about the machines are the programs that run on them. The cycles have race courses you can try, the ellipiticals have several settings, views, and data outputs. Very advanced from what I had at other gyms.
Now for the pool. In the basement of the building is a 3-lane pool. The pool can be used for 4-lanes, but it makes it very difficult to share. Again, because I go early in the morning, I've yet to run into crowds. However, when crowded, all the patrons have been more than friendly in lane sharing. The pool has two showers on deck: making it easy to rinse off before and after your swim.
In the front of the building is a massive climbing and traversing wall. A dedicated climbing instructor is available during certain hours to teach you how to safely use the wall. I believe you need to take a basic training course before you can climb during the open-hour times. (But, don't quote me on that!)
The locker room was not left out from all the glitz and glam the rest of the gym has. Each locker has its own individual combination that you can set. Never again will you need to bring or borrow a lock! Just set a 4-digit code, and it's yours. If you forget your code, as I did once, a quick call to the front desk will have a staff member open your locker with a key.
The locker room has an abundance of clean towels to use. There are plenty of benches and space to change, dry, etc. There are lotions, tissues, and hairdryers provided around every corner.
The shower area is very impressive. A private stall with a frosted glass door encloses you in your own two-head shower. You can control the water flow to each head and adjust the temperature. In addition, shampoo and soap is provided.
There are two steam rooms available for use in the shower area as well. Very relaxing after a nice long workout!
After your workout, you can lounge in the lobby area of the building. Free WiFi is provided to members, along with ample sitting space, tables, and two vending machines.
Parking is the only problem that I've had with the gym. There are lots of metered spots on the street, but those are hard to come by. To compensate, the gym has special agreements with the church down Belmont, and the parking garage down Broadway. Special prices apply to gym members. Even easier is using the CTA. Many bus lines run nearby along with the Red, Brown, and Purple line trains nearby.
Overall, I'm thoroughly impressed by the layout, equipment, and staff of LVAC. I've found my new gym!
Natania is the best! She is a new arrival but not new to training. She is great. She has a sense of humor and she really knows her stuff. She is concerned with the practical -not just the aesthetic side- of fitness. She is laid back but always professional. I really recommend her.
The actual gym is awesome. It is clean and spacious and offers many fitness classes that interest me. There are machines available when I want to work out.
My only complaint is that there is no Bravo! Oh well!
So the LVAC sent out flyers to everyone in the neighborhood. Included on it was a 30-day free membership. Great, I thought, my friend is considering a membership there as well. I'll go check it out for 30 days, see if it's worth the cost, and sign up if I think it is. Keep in mind, I'm a diehard exerciser - I wouldn't flinch (too much) at the high cost of a gym - if I felt it was justified.
In I went with my coupon. First thing I'm asked for an ID - haven't even spoken to anyone, which is odd. Next, I'm told that the coupon they sent out is only valid if I agree to sign up for a year membership (in other words, it isn't a trial, it's a supplement). When I spoke to a manager about the very misleading advertising, she made it clear that there was nothing she could do since it was created by the marketing team. Then she made a point of talking down to me twice - apparently she shouldn't be that worried since I wasn't serious about a membership anyway. Funny. I had walked in serious about the gym. She was right, though. Between their gimmicky marketing and her rude attitude I was no longer interested. Congratulations to her on taking me from seriously considering her gym to not considering it at all in less than 5 minutes.
LVAC, even Bally's stopped with the high-pressure, borderline false advertising years ago. How can you not realize what a turn off it is?
Here's what I know about this gym:
1. You have to sign up for at least a year contract - the most you can try out the gym prior to signing up is one day
2. Unless you are a student, you're membership is going to be well over $100/month. One of my friends pays $70, but that's only because her husband is paying the higher $150.
3. If you want to bring in guests, expect them to pay $20/visit (yes, really)
So I said forget it. Sure, the locker rooms are nice, but I can bring my towel and manage just fine in the locker rooms at Bally's. Bally's has free classes and a pool as well. And I'm saving well over a thousand dollars a year. Plus, Bally's gave me a 30 day trial, didn't pressure me, and was up front on their pricing.
I came over to LVAC from Fitness Formula and was really psyched because LVAC is closer to my house. The gym is brand new (well, about a year old at this point), and is gorgeous. As other reviewers have pointed out, there are multiple levels with cardio machines on one floor, weights on another, pool, etc. That didn't bother me at all; the treadmills are the primary piece of equipment that I use, and the treadmills here are awesome.
With that being said, what really turned me off here was the staff. I'm pretty low-maintenance when it comes to gyms. The greeters/check-in employees are always busy talking amongst themselves and don't even say hi when you give them your membership card to swipe. Even a friendly smile would be ok. Additionally, when I joined, the membership staff didn't even give me a full tour, she seemed very rushed even though I was the only person there. I wrote it off at the time, thinking maybe she was having a bad day, but during my year as a member I noticed this as a common theme among many employees there. This normaly wouldn't make me change my membership, but they are raising the rates and I refuse to pay higher dues when the staff operates like this. I'm sure that there are nice employees there, it's just that I personally had an unfavorable experience.
One thing I did notice, was many programs for children, which is nice. I don't have kids, but childcare is available and there are aquatic programs offered several times a week.
I'm going back to Fitness Formula on Halstead. LVAC has a great facility and for all practical purposes it's a great gym. Just wish the customer service would improve, it gives the gym a bit of a bad vibe. It seems like something that wouldn't make a difference in this mecca of a fitness complex, but sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference. Especially when you're paying a premium for services.
I am not a fan of the gym. Let me reiterate that point: I detest working out. Somehow LVAC alleviates my gym anxiety. It's a newer facility--always bright, spotless and I very rarely have to wait for a machine--even right after work. The staff is also phenom; they are uber-helpful and always friendly even at 5:30 in the morning. Yes, I love LVAC so much that I can drag myself out of bed at 5:30 for a little cardio action.
And the yoga classes. I've recently started doing yoga via LVAC and am in love. There are classes all the time, they always have enough props and the instructors are great. Sharon's Vinyasa Yoga class on Mondays at 7:30 is AMAZING. A great way to start off your week!
Love the outdoor wall. 97% of people out there are some of the best in the city, I swear (I mean just good, friendly, down to earth people; lots of great climbers too!). Have run into a rare staff member out there who cops an attitude, but not a big deal. I only use the gym to climb. Wish there was some networking going on for climbers to meet up. Can't give it 5 stars because there have been far too many mix-ups from the front desk (not being able to get checked in, can't answer questions, etc.), in addition to a bad interaction with rude climbing staff (talking ABOUT me directly in front of me, like I was invisible, claiming I was uncertified, when it was not the case) - just uncalled for and generally unprofessional (also witnessed this staff member hassle a delivery guy she'd ordered food from and another time, leave the wall to go get Chinese take out while she was working). But other than these minor things - LOVE THE WALL. Wish routes were a bit more organized (they do it better at LVAC) and wish, too, that there were more reciprocal deals for climbing between the sister gyms (LVAC and EAC). Can't comment on the rest of gym since I really only climb there, but looks pretty swanky and sweet.
EVEN BETTER THAN LPAC
LPAC'S sister LVAC is the shiny, new crown jewel in the chain's family of clubs. They really did a fantastic job with this place from top to bottom.
Things I love:
-Brand new equipment
-Rooftop pool (although I'm convinced all the water is going to come crashing down into the floors below one day)
-The AC (wonderfully cool air conditioning that keeps the place very pleasant)
-Locker rooms (beautifully designed - feels like you're at a spa)
-Dual shower heads (how did I ever survive with just one?)
-Lockers with built-in locks (I can finally leave my padlock at home)
-Towel service
Things that could be better:
-Parking is tough (although there's a subsidized garage nearby)
-Steam room (nice, but it's small and gets a bit too crowded)
-Spread out on too many floors (yeah I know it's a gym and I'm there to work out...but those stairs are still annoying)
I was SO against this place....especially when this supposedly big scary corporate gym ate my little gym, the Sweat Shop (not because the owner "moved to Florida," but because they were going to lose a ton of money in the summertime). Being left with no choice, I decided to suck it up and prepare for battle with the LVAC tonight.
I get there and I'm blown away. The staff is friendly. The facilities are AMAZING (HDTVs in my freaking treadmill...along with iPod stations!!!, little handi-wipes everywhere, machines that make me feel like I'm in a space ship because they are so amazingly advanced, and the type of showers that you only get at spas). I'm sure there is a shizload of other stuff that I haven't yet discovered, but this place is my new addiction.
IPOD STATIONS IN THE TREADMILLS! YEAHHHHH!!!!!
YEAH!
GO LVAC!
WOO!
IPODS!
OW!
Been meaning to write a review for a while - this is a great gym!
I generally agree with the other reviews - much nicer than EAC and LPAC (although both offer more classes). Also, I've been to FFC and LVAC is nicer. I'm on a corp. rate so its pretty competitively priced.
* Classes - (revised). I spin 2-3 days a week and love the spinning classes. To be honest, the times for most of the other classes aren't really convenient. They need more classes that start later and on the weekends need more classes late morning/early afternoon. LPAC has a better class schedule and I'm thinking about upgrading my membership to the multi-club to take more classes.
* Cardio - lots of machines, never had to wait (even on a Sat. morning or 7 pm at night). Yeah, some of the machines are broken but never had a problem. Love the TV and Ipod hookups.
* Locker Rooms - amazing. Spotless. Towel service. Lockers w. self-setting locks (so you don't need to bring one).
Minuses:
* parking...especially on the weekends. During the week after 5 you can park in the Mt Carmel Church lot to the west on Belmont for $2. That's great. Close and fast and lots of spaces. Its also open Sat. mornings. And during the day during the week, you can always find street parking on Broadway or Belmont (just bring your quarters). On Sat afternoons and Sundays, you're left with street parking (if you're lucky) or the valet lot on Broadway. That gets full frequently (not sure how a valet garage gets full ?) and it takes forever for them to get your car. Also, if there is something on Broadway (pride parade, marathon, art fair, etc) - it can be almost impossible to get there. It would be nice if they let use the other clubs on those days, but I guess not.
Actually, that's really only the minus. (and the lack of places to eat at 7 am is also a problem. I'm starving after spin class and the Bagel doesn't open until 8!).
I will admit, I was extremely skeptical of LVAC at first. Okay, skeptical is an understatement - I was downright horrified at the idea of paying more than double what I was paying in DC for a gym. However, due to it's close proximity to my apartment, I decided to give it ago.
Since the beginning, my experience with LVAC has been nothing but positive. Tasha, the membership advisor that gave me my tour, was more than friendly and helpful, and even gave me tips on what classes are difficult to get into (note: if you're big into spin like me, you need to get there early to sign up for a bike -- Mondays are usually pretty crowded). After my tour, I felt pretty satisfied with the place and figured I couldn't find somewhere nearly as convenient. I signed up on the spot and took advantage of their New Years promotion - $50 off the initiation fee and second month free.
Amenities-wise, I have yet to see a gym as amazing as this one. HDTVs & iPod docks on nearly every cardio machine (and I have yet to experience a wait for a machine!). Pool. Sauna. Rock climbing wall. Nice weight machines. Showers that look like they belong in a spa. Lockers that don't require your own padlock (you set the combination yourself each time you come). WiFi. Disposable antibacterial wipes to wipe down your machine afterwards (no clumsy spray bottle and paper towel).
This place is top notch and worth every penny.
I really love this gym. My neurotic self doesn't feel out of place when I get all sweaty and out of breath, and the staff is really friendly.
I took over(sub-leased?) my friend's membership when she moved to California (the state, not the street) for a small fee of like $40 which we split.
If you work someplace where you can get a group of, I think, 7 or more people, they will work out a special rate ($75 a month, instead of whatever the regular rate is). Although $75 is still a hefty price to pay, it's a pretty good rate for the neighborhood and it gets my arse there.
The locker-rooms and shower facilities are very nice, and super clean!!
I had a free week pass, so I decided to go ahead and try it, since I walk by almost everyday and look at the rock wall. The first time I went was in the evening and it had a total meat market feel. There were quite a few people there who where dressed to attract a mate. That sort of put me off. I don't like talking to people I don't know in general and people I don't know at the gym in particular. The next time I visited was the middle of the day, which was much more low key. A lot of moms and older women. I did take a couple of classes, which were really good, especially the flow yoga.
I give this gym 5 stars based on 2 things alone: carpeting in the locker room and built-in combination locks on the lockers. Simple, yes, but compared to the other gyms I've belonged to this is huge and makes it worth my money. Everything else is like icing on the cake (yes, that's right. I'm pulling out the cheesy metaphors).
I joined last month because it's 3 blocks from my house. I can still go to DePaul for free but it's too far away, so instead I fork over the $65 a month (student rate) to be lazy. You have to sign up for a 1 year contract, but if you do want to get out of it before it's up, you can sublease the rest of the term to someone else. The membership gal said people post them on Craigslist, so check there first if you don't qualify for any sort of discount.
So far, though, the place is wonderful. It gets really busy around 6:00pm but I still have never waited for an elliptical machine. The weight rooms are nice. I like that they are on a separate floor...it gives me a change of scenery. I've only tried one group class, but I liked it and the instructor was great.
I guess my only complaint is that if you bring a guest, they have to pay the full $25 day-pass fee. I wish they'd offer a little discount because I'd like to bring a friend once in a while, and $25 is a bit much just for me to have someone to chat with while ellipticalling.
Fantastic. This club has it all. 2 pools, beautiful locker rooms, individual tvs on the cardio equipment and plenty of classes.
For us, it opened at just the right time. After a number of years of inactivity we were ready to get back in shape. After joining in late January (and watching our calories) we've lost a collective 75 pounds! It's not all the club, of course, but the fact is it's such a nice place to go that it's been a pleasure and incentive to keep to our schedule.
Minor quibbles: the cardio equipment can often be broken - although there are plenty of machines that it's not too big a problem. Also, there should be a drinking fountain in the locker rooms. Finally, they used to offer free coffee and recently took that perk away.
All in all, a beautiful place.
I really love this gym. I've been going here for a few months now, and haven't been disappointed once. I like my student rate; it's a great deal! The facility is gorgeous and clean, and you never have to wait too long for a machine, even at peak times. I don't really enjoy exercising, but I always feel happy when I'm at LVAC and end up staying longer than I intend to every time.
Continuously deteriorating levels of service and amenities.
The location opened up with a complimentary coffee and tea bar and then it disappeared without an explanation or apology. Did the rates go down? Of course not.
The steam room is out of order frequently without any note letting you know not to open the door. (if you open the door while the steam is off you are blasted with a sulfurous nasty smell.)
The only interaction I have with staff is at the front desk and I am frequently greeted by a sour collection of frowns, bothered that I am interrupting their facebook chat or text message conversation.
When using the cardio machines, the biggest challenge is finding a TV that can tune in more than fuzzy static.
The cleanliness of the gym is good, but they rarely sweep the numerous stairwells, letting the dust bunnies grow and multiply.
When you choose a locker and put your stuff in there, change and get close it to start your workout, only then do you find out that you've selected one of the many lockers that do not lock. There are at least 10 that have been broken for months now. It's not difficult for me to move my clothes to another locker, but it is a good indicator of how serious LVAC is about maintaining their facility.
The pool closed this week without any email to members. I simply showed up to find a note on the pool room saying it would be closed all week. Oh well, I can still use the hot tub after my workout. OOPS, that's closed too. No note whatsoever about that. Maybe they're fixing the timer on the hot tub. It is required by law to turn off after turning the timer to 15 minutes, but it stays on continuously. I doubt they're going to fix that.
I closed the card I was using to pay for my membership and changed my to a different card. It took them 6 weeks to update their comments at the front desk. I would check in daily and be greeted with "your account is past due" every day for six weeks even though I was paid up and current. It was embarrassing, annoying, frustrating and irritating.
Poor communication with members, dwindling services, poor upkeep and unfriendly staff give leave me with a negative opinion of LVAC.
Man, this is a great gym. It has everything.
However, it seems to get busier and busier - which means I just have to work out later and later. But, that's fine. Either way, I've never had to wait to use any piece of equipment.
And, I can't wait for the rooftop pool this Summer.
I'm tempted to up the stars to 5 just for the shower alone. It's the perfect end to a nice work-out.
This gym does have quite a bit to offer, but alas I am a bit jaded because I am one of the luck few who were bought out from the glorious "Sweat Shop" across the street.
I thought I was up for the bare-bones experience of the Sweat Shop, I would rant and rave how my gym does not have all the frills and annoyances that come with large gyms (aka Bally's, sick!), but oh how I was mistaken....
The LVAC rocks my world every time I step in there. the decor leaves you feeling clean and calm and almost enables a sense of rejuvenation, not just grey and sweaty. the lockers are clean that come complete with saunas and steam rooms (which I might add have what seems to be eucalyptus/mint pumping through the air). The equipment is so state of the art you feel a bit intimidated, but that soon fades once you are running and your favorite Simpson episode is on fox and is there on your personal treadmill screen.
The biggest factor for me with this gym, which may be small, but is the fact they have disposable wipes for cleaning of the equipment. Most gyms have those spray bottles and towels and never seam quite clean to me.
LVAC is amazing! Worth the money!
I had to add an update to my first review. I continue to LOVE this gym even if there are too few beautiful straight men to hit on me and take me to dinner. Ha. I've been training with Aaron Guy and he is an AMAZING trainer. Not only does he give me a creative workout each week and really push me past what I would do on my own, he's also very knowledgeable, warm and fun to talk to. It makes the workout go by super fast! If you are thinking about getting a personal trainer, try to get in with Aaron. Be prepared though, he seems to be pretty booked - getting in may be a tough!!!

This place is amazing. The best gym I've ever belonged to. And get this: if you work at a… Read more »
I just joined LVAC in January and this place pretty much speaks for itself though it's only getting a 4-star because it's a bit on the expensive side. I was a bit skeptical before joining because I thought ok this place is new, trendy, and in the middle of Lakeview/Boystown so it's going to attract the young, fit, and pretty boys and the girls that follow them around. I thought for sure that working out in that environment was going to make me want to swing from the rafters rather than lift any weights. Surprisingly that isn't the case. Sure there's plenty of eye candy but there's very little attitude and most of the people I've met are pretty friendly, especially people in the classes.
Everything from the lockers that don't a need separate locks to the pools (yes, there are two) to the new equipment that you can link your own iPod into is all great. My only minor compliant after the last couple of weeks is that the peak times are a little weird, you can never tell when it's going to be busy and sometimes it seems like there's not enough equipment if you're in the area with the jump ropes, balls (giggle @ balls), steps, etc.
I'm using one of the personal trainers (Aaron) and he's fantastic. I've been working out with him since the end of January and I've made more progress working with him for 6 weeks than I could have done on my own in months. I'm also really into the Spin classes. The Monday night class with Brady is the best but classes with Michael and Richard are great too.
Over all I think LVAC was totally worth the wait. If you're even a little curious about it just stop by and take a 20 minute tour with any one of the friendly staff and you'll see what I mean.
I loooooove my new gym!
Having been a longtime Crunch-goer, I was hesitant to switch...until my hubby came home a few weeks before my Crunch membership expired with the news that we could workout at LVAC for basically what Crunch was asking to renew our memberships (ask about corporate and student discounts...). That and the fact this this gym is blocks from our house -- those dreams of waking up early and going to the gym MIGHT actually come true -- enticed us enough to make the switch.
Not anti-Crunch by any means, but did I mention that I love my new gym?! There are so many little amenities -- Wi-Fi, complimentary coffee and tea, lockers that don't require you to bring a lock (it's got a built-in combo thing that you set yourself each visit), rooftop pool and sun deck, TVs on all the cardio machines -- that really make it a comfortable third place. Take that with the great schedule of classes at times that are actually convenient for us working folk, the cool rock climbing wall, and the fact that it's just a beautiful well thought-out space, and you've got yourself an amazing gym.
Since I'm a student and live 3 blocks away from LVAC, I felt especially compelled to join. I've never been a fan of the gym atmosphere, but LVAC does a great job of keeping the place feeling bright and comfortable. The womens' locker room is one of the nicest I've experienced - always sparkly clean and well stocked, private dressing rooms and combination lock-lockers are great. I would have given five stars, but the steam room is almost always out of order - thankfully, the dry sauna is always working, so I can get my detoxifying fix. I've never had to wait for a cardio machine, and they have a great variety of machines to work on so I never get bored with the same old elliptical routine. Best of all, they have a HUGE selection of yoga classes, so just about any day of the week I'm able to squeeze in a class if I so desire. Love this place!
My partner and I joined this gym a few months ago and we were instantly impressed. I used to work out at the Golds Gym on Montrose and there really is no comparison. While I am now paying almost three times as much as my old gym, I think it is worth it.
The equipment and facilities are all brand new. It is fully equipped with more workout equipment than I would ever need, but it's nice to know it's there if I reach that level of commitment.
I like to go in the morning (6am-ish) before work and there are never any waits for equipment at this time.
I have taken Yoga and climbing classes there. Both instructors were excellent. The climbing wall is a great workout, but you must be sure to take a safety test before using it. I was new to the experience and took a beginners class to get up to speed on safety.
The locker rooms and associated areas were well thought-out and make you feel like you are in a high-end spa. The lockers have built in combination locks that you can set yourself, so you do not have to worry about having your own lock. The showers are wonderful. Lots of pressure, and there are two shower heads, front and top. The temperature is easy to regulate (those with sensitive skin will appreciate this).
If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, you'll be happy to know they have free Wi-Fi in the entire building. I find this useful in order to watch YouTube clips of Judge Judy while doing cardio (highly recommended).
Overall, I feel like I am getting my money's worth. However, If you are on a tight budget for a gym, a smaller neighborhood one may be a less expensive option.
I am a snob when it comes to gyms for a number of reasons:
1. I'm overweight
2. I used to manage a gym, so I have decent sense of how they work
3. I've been a member of what is, perhaps, the most amazing gym in the states, Chelsea Piers in NYC.
I'm not easy to impress. I belonged to another gym that was okay a few years back. I won't even consider joining a place like Bally's. I'm a snob and I know it.
Going to a gym when you're overweight it hard. I always feel like I stick out like a sore thumb. But I didn't feel out of place here--there was a lovely mix of body types and the layout in the cardio room is such that we're not all staring at each other.
This place is huge. It's beautiful and the shower in the locker room is amazing. The staff is friendly but not fake. The prices (at least at the pre-sale) are amazing. I am thrilled. I can't wait to go back (and that says something).
There's a large selection of classes, including beginer classes, which I really appreciate.
I went to the sister gym, Lincoln Park Athletic Club. I was afraid this was going to be like it--not filthy, but not clean, small and somewhat crowded. This place is new, clean and the spacing and layout is well considered.
Happy me!
So my big, huge going to WW ass has needed a gym for quite some time. I had one in Florida many moons ago that was almost luxurious for a gym. Since living in Chicago, I've mostly avoided joining a gym because a. East Bank wasn't an option and b. it's more fun to eat Ben and Jerry's on Tuesday nights. Then came LVAC. I signed up without even taking a tour. All I knew is that it was new, relatively clean and had lots of equipment.
I am SO glad I joined. The set up is a little awkward because of the different levels. It is clean. It's new. The locker room is really nice minus the ugly ductwork overhead. The cardio room has plenty of machines. I cannot imagine ever having to wait for a machine here. It's quiet. The staff is nice. The other members are nice. Overall, it's a great place to workout. Parking is a bitch but that's to be expected in this neighborhood.
signed,
not going to be a fat ass forever! Mary
