DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE!
I've worked for this cockeyed institution and truly believe that it is a testament to terrible administration, unsanitary and unsafe environments, and the unfortunate demise of what could be great teachers. Mind you I'm not writing this review to begrudge this institution. I left on my own accord with appropriate resignation.
This place provides no support for its staff. The administration is down right rude and non-conventional with their staff. I witnessed the head honchos use "obscene abusive language" towards employees and patrons alike. I overheard the head honcho call a staff member "ignorant" and "uneducated" to her face and go on her marry way. I have witnessed her throw a parent out that could not afford to make the weekly payment that Tuesday morning. Should I mention, I have never met two women that hate children more than these administrators (Karen + Marsha). It is purely a moneymaking business.
Most importantly, if you are a parent looking for a safe place for your child during your workday please don't consider Lakeshore Schools! The classrooms are unsafe. The lofts are high. The teacher to student ratio is way too big. There were evenings when I was left alone with 15 2-year-olds. HOW UNSAFE! All I could think was which door do I go out of in case of a fire? The one that leads to Clark street (while I run in and out the front door to retrieve frozen, terrified 2-year-olds) or the one that leads to the back alley via playground (where toddlers will stop to dilly-dally). Hmm...Dilemma. Then there is the fact that toys are all over 30-years-old and are beyond a good bath (and if you get caught throwing them out the admin has a conniption fit).
And, consider what your child would be learning in this place. They use High Reach Curriculum which very simply put is cut and paste in the lines (umm... last time I graduated from a prestigious 4-year program in education that was not developmentally appropriate for 2's). Cutting, great! Pasting, fun! In the lines, I don't think so. Oh, and consider your child will change classrooms 3 times a year to make space for incoming $$$. Not to mention that the staff turnover (especially certified teaching staff) happens faster than your child's first step.
I am one of four great-certified teachers that have left Lakeshore within 4 months of starting to work for organizations that allow us to hone in on our professional careers.
Please, think twice before sending your children there. Keep Head Start in mind (you have more rights with public programs).
My son has been going to Lake Shore School since July 2007 and overall it's been a positive experience. The instructors of my son's class, Ms Marilyn and Ms Guadalupe have been good to my son and he usually is very happy to be in class. Something I have noticed, which bothers me a bit, is they write that my son napped the same time everyday which I know for a fact is bunk. There have been a few instances of me picking up J in the middle of nap time and he is wide awake. His report sheet for the day said his nap lasted until an hour after we'd already left. If you're not going to accurately report, don't bother reporting.
The school itself was quaint. There is a playground in the back. A lot of the toys seem very outdated. The school itself has been around for something like 40 years??? So I can understand the clutter. Not the cleanest or most organized I've seen. Also, I have absolutely no idea how I would be able to park my car to drop off my daughter since the entrance is located on Clark street in the middle of Andersonville. However, some of the staff seemed very pushy. Unfortunately I will not be sending my daughter here.
My 26 mo old daughter just completed her first week and I feel very confident in saying that this place is top notch. Although, it is a very busy school, I feel my child and I are recieving the personal attention that all families deserve. They have helped make the transition for my daughter smooth by providing us with information about policy and procedure before her first day and by being patient and understanding during drop off and pick up. Communication is excellent, the teachers send a note home with all the lunch, nap and activity information for the day. The staff is great!
I can tell my daughter loves it because when it is time to leave she says, "no home. play."
