BRILLIANT! I have to say at first, I was a little weary of the prices of the treatments. But once I walked through the gates, I realized it was well worth it. The serenity, grounds, service and free classes you can attend make this experience well worth the cost. I tried to seize the day while I was there since I have a screaming 2 year old and 5 year old waiting for me at home. So I did the morning boat ride which was a wonderful way to start my day. A warm coffee and a blanket on the water. :) Then went on to a yoga class and steam/ hot tub. The inside pool is to die for, but please don't. I know this place is like heaven but let's save that for a later date. Much later. :)
Ask for this for a Valentine's gift.....or BDay...or 4 of July, whatever...Just get there. -

This was my second trip to this spa and on this visit I was there for an all day package which I was really looking forward to. The package included 3 services and lunch. The massage was very good and actually one of the best massages I have had.
After the massage I had lunch which was good and healthy. My next appointment was over an hour so I used the spa facilities and enjoyed relaxing. While trying to relax I started to get a migrain so I went to get ibuprophen. For anyone who gets these you know that two tylenol for the onset of a migrain is like spitting on a forest fire.
After taking the tylenol and realizing it was getting worse I asked the spa manager if I could perhaps get a raincheck and come back when I was feeling better. The answer was NO. The spa manager said it was too close to cancle my next session and I would lose them if I did not attend. Now, I paid $600+ for a spad day and it would have been the human thing to do to let me come back and enjoy them when I was not in pain. She suggested I power through them as I would lose them otherwise. So I did. I was miserable and could not wait for them to be done. Given their lack of sensitivity to their customers I would NEVER EVER RETURN to this place. -

Lake Austin Spa Resort is a real toss up. I gave it a middle-of-the-road rating because the spa services and pools are awesome. I had a Tibetan bowl massage which was very interesting and relaxing. I also had a pedicure and a facial. Both were excellent.
The resort, however, is not worth the exorbitant price. The rooms are about two steps down from just about any lake house you have ever been to. They don't even have flat screen televisions or on-demand movies. The worst part though is the food. Sure, it's fresh and tastes alright but there's relatively little on the menu that's over 250 calories. I personally stick to a 1,800 calorie a day diet and this was just crazy! We almost starved to death. If you're working out, then whatever tiny amount of food you eat will not hold you over until the next day. It honestly depressed me.
I say get a half-day or whole day spa package, enjoy lunch in the spa during your stay and skip the resort all together. Austin has so much going and so many nice hotels and hot spots that I wouldn't waste several grand to starve to death. -

I'm actually quite surprised by the negative reviews about this place. I had an amazing time and never wanted to leave!
A friend of mine's husband got her a spa day here for Christmas for her and a guest! And who was the lucky guest? THIS ONE (pointing at myself). We each got an 80 min massage (mine was the Muscle Tension Melt and hers was the Custom Comfort Massage). We both were fairly pleased with ours. I wish I remembered what my therapist's name was, because she was really good. And I'm a massage snob.
After our massages, we had lunch (also included in the friend's gift) and it was really good. It was light, and filling and delicious.
After lunch we swam in the pool barn (ha, pool. barn.) in the heated pool. We were the only two in the pool and there was a nice breeze that came through and it was quiet and relaxing and gave us plenty of freedom to walk laps while catching up.
I also tried the steam room, hot tub and took a shower before we left. We spent around 5 hours here, in a robe the whole time, and being pampered. I'm not sure how you can ever give that a bad review, but I guess when my services were free it was a lot easier to be happy about my experience there.
Now that I've had a taste of the good life, I'll be back. And I'll be dropping hints like MAD to my fiance about the perfect gift for me in the future ;) -

LOVE this place!!
Everytime I visit my friend in Austin, we begin our weekend with a spa day! I've never stayed the night here, but have used their facilities. You can book a measly eyebrow wax, and stay the whole day if you'd like.
We had a spa lunch, which was very tasty before heading to our services. I had an eyebrow wax (best I've ever had) and a manicure. The technicians were very friendly and professional. Afterwards, we lounged around in our robes and laid out by the pool. Before leaving we used the steam room, showered, then prepared for our night on the town. They had everything you needed here! Shampoo, soap, hairdryers, toothbrushes, razors, shave gel, etc.
Very serene atmosphere and was a great place to unwind after my flight. It is costly, but so worth every penny! I would definitely recommend it for the day! -

There's not much storyline, so I'll get straight to the ratings.
It gets +1 star for being in a beautiful location, on the lake nestled in nature, with deer and other wildlife casually passing through.
As well as for the outdoor couple's massage area, as it is the MUST place to have a couple's massage here. Demand it, wait for it if it's booked, and just have it outside. Don't worry, you're outdoors but in an isolated area attached to the SPA so no one else can see you.
(And it's not the actual massage that makes it worth it (since that depends on who you get), but it's the total experience that makes this fun.)
In the evening they surround the area with candles and it's very romantic, though I also enjoy it during the day because I love having a massage with sunlight around me. (You're under a hut in the shade with fans, but there's a little pool and getting a touch of sun in there after a massage is a wonderful energy recharge).
*I don't advise it in Fall/Winter since the temperature outside might feel great with clothes on, but it feels "freezing cold" when you're laying naked on a massage table.
It also gets +1 star for the good manicure/pedicure. The cleaning was well-done, cuticles evenly pushed back, and the final paint was very good, as it should be (no missed areas, spots, etc..). The filing was pretty even too. (FYI, Blanca was her name if she's still there).
However, it loses -2 stars for having one of the worst hotel restaurants I've ever eaten in at any resort. I stayed here for an entire weekend and survived on bread. I like to eat, so this was not good.
I did taste all the meals always hoping for an improvement, but there wasn't even one meal that I would consider being good. (At the SPA they also served a dish that was inedible, it wasn't rotten but very close to it).
It loses -1 star for the waste of time facial experience I had. I mean, the worst facial possible because all she did was slather some products on my face while lifelessly rubbing them in. No cleaning, no massage, no expertise, nothing. I can put lotion on myself at home without the $100+ price tag. I'm hoping she was just having a bad day, but she should've called in sick because that terrible facial doesn't give me a refund on time or money. (Her name was Shelly, avoid her and try with someone else or just skip it and get something from the gift shop instead.)
The gift shop is good. I bought a lot of different products from the various brands they carry, and I like them all.
*Just be careful/focused with the powders from their makeup brand though. I purchased an eyeshadow assortment, and it was a great product but it didn't last very long. One drop to the floor and it's no longer a compact but a powder everywhere disaster... :(
I've dropped eyeshadows before and they might chip or crack with a little loose powder lost, but this one was so delicate it went everywhere, literally everywhere.. Lol .. -

Ooooh-weee, Santa brought me a spa day! Spent a rejuvenating day here right after Christmas. The atmosphere is tranquil and lovely. I had the Ginger Lime Body Scrub, which was absolutely heavenly. It smelled delicious, and my skin stayed silky for a week. Afterword, I had a pretty lame lunch- this is a health spa, after all. If you are a big eater, order whatever looks the most filling on the menu, because it will surely underwhelm. I had a salad and my tummy grumbled for the rest of the day.
Next up, I hate to say so, but I had the worst massage of my life. It was heavy on the friction and hair-pulling and the therapist worked very, very FAST. After 90 minutes, I was grumpy, tense and sore. Not sure how she got a job at one of the top spas in the country. Also, the outdoor treatment room was freezing and windy. The music died at the start of the treatment and the therapist said, "I guess we'll enjoy the sounds of nature." "Nature" included cars honking, people talking in the next area, doors opening/closing, and a barking dog.
Finally, a divine facial, The Advanced AHA Facial, with Christina (unfortunately, the only name I made note of). I am an aesthetician myself, and Christina had an impressive technique. If I could do it all again, I'd request a Yelp-recommended massage therapist and order differently in the restaurant. Also, bring your swimsuit and plan to enjoy the locker room amenities. A (mostly) enjoyable day, nonetheless. -

Lake Austin Spa has rectified the situation! I accepted an offer to upgrade my gift certificate to a half day spa service (same as the first time around) in hope that I could experience the greatness that I've heard expressed. First let me say that Starr Kunkelmann has taken over as assistant spa director and she is on top of things. I contacted her, and without her having knowledge of my prior experience, she was quick to find out the details, book my treatments, and follow up with me before and after to ensure I was satisfied with my experience. After all, if this is a luxury spa and I expect the set up process to be as painless as possible, too.
Helpful info...
- Ask for a full tour of the facility, including the upstairs lounge area where you can also sit and relax before your treatment and instructions on how to use the facility amenities if you're not familiar - it will make it that much more comfortable for you.
- Give yourself enough time to fill out the form located at the top of the stairs before your treatments.. yes, there is a form as in any standard spa.
- Ask for help/instructions for the lockers (I had trouble the first time and ran into two ladies who has had the same)
- If you have lunch, sit as far away from the kitchen door as possible.. its the opposite of relaxing if you sit next to the very loud sounds of work in progress.
- Take a swimsuit for the hot tub/sauna/steam room, unless you're cool like that. (actually, its required)
- If you forget it, they might have it, so don't be afraid to ask.
- I had the lavender scrub (to which I fell asleep it was so relaxing) and then a custom comfort massage - I'd recommend both!
- Make sure you ask for your "gift" that is listed as included with the package (this is the second time I was not offered the gift upon my departure :( )
Overall, even though you can get an equally satisfying massage for a fraction of the cost elsewhere, I discovered this time around that its the overall experience, the gorgeous venue, and the escape that makes this spa worth the cost.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Los Angeles, CA
I came down from Los Angeles for a 5 day/4 night jumpstart vacation over the 4th of July weekend. This trip was supposed to allow me to de-stress and provide motivation to eat well and workout more after leaving my high stress investment banking job. I was hesitant to shell out the cash for one of these resort spas but a deal came up on Jetsetter so I booked my trip ASAP.
Facilities: The property is set on one of the lakes in Austin with 40 guest rooms. Overall the facilities are rustic but spacious. They offer a bevy of cable TV channels and free wi-fi internet. I was pleased with the facilities until on the 3rd night I saw the world's biggest roach/waterbug (at least the size of my finger) in my bathroom. They did not even offer to allow me to switch rooms or offer any compensation. They do put a notice that there is a possibility of bugs but come on....For as much money as I am paying a night I expect all bugs to be outside of my room and NOT crawling around in my bathroom.
Food: All meals are included in the cost of the room. The positives are they are made with fresh ingredients, they are small portions and are somewhat tasty. The cons are there is not really a bevy of food available during the non-meal times. Also, there are no options for food after 9pm, even room service. I found myself loading up on food when I have dinner at 7 pm to prevent hunger late at night.
Workout Facilities: The gym facilities are nice. There are 8-10 workout classes (half intense workouts and half yoga/pilates based workouts). The classes were ok but clearly not taught by the most seasoned or toned professionals.
Spa: The spa was re-furbished in the early 2000s and looks more modern than the rest of the property. The waiting room like the rest of the property is pretty rustic. I have decided I like more zen-like, serene, modern places in spas. I had two treatments - a river rock stone massage and an olive oil treatment which includes a scrub, body wrap and massage.
Location: The resort is located about 45 minutes from the airport and pretty far from most places in Austin. It is a nice getaway to feel secluded but not the best place if you want to be close to things to do at night.
Overall recommendation: I have had much better experiences at nicer places for less money than what I paid (even at the Ritz-Carlton in Maui). I can cross one of these all-inclusive resort spa places off my list but I think I can motivate myself in the future to workout and make better food choices on vacation for a fraction of the price. The surprising part was how many people were frequent guests here because I don't see the appeal given the amount of money this place costs. I would not re-visit here. -

After a crazy year of countless freelance, up and down real estate, exhausting farm work and perhaps a Britney-esque convergence into a wannabe rock and roll lifestyle as a quick fix, I decided to check it before I wreck it, and get myself close to some healthy living.
Stumbled upon a part time job at Lake Austin Spa as a shipping and receiving coordinator, and being the old school FedEx brat, found it could be a good fit, and applied for the job.
Fast forward 5 weeks later, and shit, it's had a tremendous effect. Happier, 8 pounds lighter, and Charlie digs the daily routine.
On the work side, there are challenges; it's a 35 minute commute, some fellow workers treat me like THE help instead of A help, and the pay won't send me to Vegas anytime soon.
On the spa/resort side, however, I say God DANG.
Oddly, Robert Jackson, the same architect of my family's lavender farm, has created bliss again in the Lakehouse Spa, a rambling, 25,000 sq foot facility that enables the spa-goer to roam between treatments, whether it be in the cozy sprawl of the locker room/lounges complete with steam/sauna/whirlpool and outdoor shower and sunbathing area, or traipsing about the outdoor areas between the spa building and pool barn with its fantastic design.
AND the Blue Room, where to chill before your specialist comes to get you for your treatment, is the most beautiful cavernous room possible to do so...blue ceiling, fire place, comfortable furniture and coffee table books worth devouring...etc.. If I ever own a home with a room like this, the life message will be abundantly clear: I WIN.
Services are crazy-multitudinous, and so far have only experienced the Custom Comfort massage. Toby, my therapist, wasted no time in going deep on my compromised back on Friday, and this weekend I've opted to travel via back handsprings everywhere I go, it was so effective. I am going back as soon as it's humanly possible. RECOMMENDATION: TOBY.
Having enjoyed a #2 ranking from the most recent Conde Nast Traveler review as the almost best destination spa in North America (a big deal, yo, especially here in our own backyard), the resort has committed itself to garnering #1, and has just renovated rooms (as of 1 week prior to this review) to help achieve that top spot.
I won't divulge my insider knowledge on the renovation types and costs, but, seriously, SU-WEET.
Prices for the #2 destination spa resort in North America wouldn't be cheap, of course, but to the facility's credit, everything is included except spa services and alcohol (which, with the exception of enhancing a meal, is antithetical to a rejuvenation vacation). All fitness and "discovery" classes (esp cooking classes) and meals are all included in the price...and wandering the 19 peaceful, waterfront acres in a robe and spa-provided sandals without a care in the world, priceless.
TIPS:
Occasional celebrity spotting. I won't say whom, because I signed a document telling me not to do so.
Get a three night stay before March 5th, and you get a 4th night free...a $500 value.
The half-day package at the spa is $325, which includes 2 50-minute treatments, gratuity, a gift and lunch at the Spa House's bustling, friendly Aster Cafe. Best deal.
Gift certificate central for clients and friends. Wouldn't get one for less than $50, since honestly, it won't get you that far, but they'll love you for the effort and entree' into the most luxurious facility for hundreds of miles around.
Ask about the $25 locker/lounge room fee. I believe it's charged on weekends, but waived Monday-Thursday. Or it's vice-versa. Ask.
Update 3/16/08: Lake Austin Spa and Resort is NUMBER ONE on Conde' Nasts' list as BEST Destination Spa in NORTH AMERICA coming out in April.

Hmmmm. Ya know what? LAS is beautiful and relaxing inside and especially outside on the grounds - it is zen. Almost. Very almost.
The problem I have with this place is no matter how zen it tries to be, it always feels commercialized to me. One case in point: I scheduled a duo massage with a lake view, even paid extra for the lake view (this is the home of pay extra for extras btw), only to arrive in a hot room with robot looking air conditioners next to the massage tables. Even better, the only lake view you could see was when you were standing up. Even better better, the massages were mediocre and felt fluffity fluff fluff fluffed.
I don't mind paying big money for big guns, but don't hand me a toy gun and tell me it's real.Listed in: ZZZZzzzzzzz, W H A T E V E R, No Droopin' Booty ...

One word! Sanctuary. This place is amazing. It secluded and serene. When you arrive at the gates the staff has to buzz you in, Security! They were very courteous. As you arrive through the doors you get a sense of peace. Note: If your allergic to cats this is not the place for you. They have cats every where. I like cats so it just added to the ambience and made me feel more at home. The spa smells amazing. There dressing area is wonderful and I like the fact that the sauna, steam room and hot tub our not co-ed. I like to go all NATURAL in the hot tub and wouldn't feel as comfortable if there was a strange guy next to me. Anyway with that being said its wonderful. I have been twice so far and it has never been crowded. Before your massage starts you wait in the Blue Room. The Blue Room is fit for royalty. I could sit there for hours . My first time there my masseuse was Nicole and she was incredible. She didn't handle me to rough or to soft. My second time there I requested Nicole but she was't available in the evenings. On a scale from 1-10 my second masseuse was a 3. She barely touched me and spent the whole time telling me her life story. You win some and lose some . Unfortunately , I cant remember her name. It wasn't worth remembering at the time. Anyway...all around I suggest Lake House Spa to everyone. They have a great cafe where they serve lunch to day guest. I tried the venison sausage dish and the vanilla yogurt. Im getting hungry just thinking about it.Yummy! There grounds are beautiful. Wonderful landscaping.
I should mention that I just stayed as a day guest . Overnight guest have more options and most likely an even better experience. -

I won a silent auction item that bought me and my hubby a full weekend here last year at half price.
Was it worth it? For what we paid, I think so. For full price? I think I'll take that trip to Nepal instead.
First, the grounds are beautiful. Set against a rare spot of undeveloped land in the hills of Lake Austin just below the dam, you feel like you're truly in the middle of nowhere.
The rooms and service are outstanding; understated but beautiful. That being said, had I been paying full price, I would have found them a little spartan for the price tag.
The food was fantastic. Breakfast, lunch and dinner to order. But it is "spa" food, so keep your expectations on the healthy side.
The spa facilities are amazing. Its pretty wild to sit outside next to a pool on a large, cushioned lounge chair in nothing but a robe made of fluff (those robes were the hightlight of my trip, honestl), but I have to echo that for the $$ attached to the services, I've had better or as good elsewhere, for even considerably less. I got a massage and facial. The massage was good, but I've had just as good at Lauderstein Conway for $35, and I got a much better facial at Aziz.
I've gone back once for a day visit for a special occasion, and if I have to choose between spending $250 on dinner out, or here, I'll go here. That being said, unless I win the lottery, I don't think I'll be spending any more weekends there.Listed in: Staycation

You know how sometimes you'll go on a vacation and it'll be really great, and then you go back a few years later and think, "Gosh, this is so much suckier than I remember" and you get all bitter and disappointed and never end up going anywhere twice, ever again, for fear of the inevitable letdown?
Luckily for me, this did not happen when I returned to Lake Austin ten years after my last visit. Instead, I pretty much sobbed my way home, wishing I had not run out of money so I could have stayed another week. It was actually BETTER than I remembered it.
I stayed in one of the little garden cabins, so I had my own private porch with two big cushy chairs and a fenced in "Japanese meditation garden" with a running fountain, which I never sat in (the garden, not the fountain. Although I didn't sit in the fountain either.) The room itself was super-comfortable, lots of plush pillows, throws, a giant fluffy comforter for those cold Texas nights, a big flat-screen TV and a DVD player. And everything smelled like lavender, which happens to be my favorite scent in the world besides lilac - which also flourished in abundance all around the room and grounds. It was pretty much olfactory heaven all 'round.
The food was awesome, although I refuse to believe the posted calorie counts. The portions were just too big and the desserts were very rich and decadent (I mean, c'mon - chocolate cream pie with graham cracker crust? At a SPA? Something is definitely fishy there.) Also, I think there is something very subversive about a spa that serves wine. Not that I minded, really...but, I dunno, I was really going for the whole "healthy living" thing, and after two days of trying really, really hard to resist the call of the alcohol I finally gave in and ended up having a glass or two with dinner every night. So I don't think I lost as much weight as I could have.
Since the last time I was there they have built an entirely new spa facility with a small but pleasant patio cafe, two pools, and a hot tub. It was a nice place to hang out during the day, although, be warned, this is also where the day spa people hang out so it can get kind of crowded. If you're looking for total peace and relaxation I recommend sticking with the original resort pool.
Unlike some of the reviewers here, I thought my spa treatments were quite good, although I can definitely understand that it all depends on who is administering them and what your subjective tastes are. Maybe I was just lucky, but he massage I got after a body scrub was so great I made sure to get the same person (Kimberly) when I went back a few days later. The services are pricey, I agree - probably a lot more than you'd spend at an ordinary day spa - but I figure you're paying extra for the setting and environment, which I was happy to do.
As far as the activities go, I must have been a lot more tired than I thought I was when I went there, because I honestly didn't do that much. Sculling every morning (they have two shells available for guests), one spinning class, and a hike or two, and that was pretty much it. I enjoyed all of the stuff I did, but I will say that this is probably not the place if you're looking for a really strenuous sort of workout environment. I'd say the classes and activities are definitely geared more toward the "person who works too much and doesn't have a lot of time for the gym" level (i.e., me, so it was perfect).
They don't push you to socialize with people unless you really want to, which is a refreshing change from places like Canyon Ranch that always try to steer solo travelers to group activities and community dining tables. There are also all sorts of private little nooks you can burrow into for quality alone-time. My favorite spot, next to my little patio, was the "garden library," which is a beautiful glassed-in room overlooking the lake with lots of plush chaises and was a delightful place to spend the one rainy day I experienced during my stay.
In all, the only real complaint I have about Lake Austin (other than the fact that I had to leave eventually) was that the lake itself actually gets pretty busy in the afternoon with speedboats and jet skiers, so the noise kind of disrupts the calm relaxed air they're going for. But that's hardly the spa's fault, and it really only goes on a couple of hours, so you can retreat to the spa building pool until everyone gets tired and goes away.
Now that I have written this ridiculously long review, I am sad all over again that I had to leave. I am looking forward to paying off my credit card bill so I can go back next year. -

I was extremely unimpressed, actually my experience here was more than a damper.
My friend was house-sitting for me while I went out of town so to thank her, I decided to treat her to a massage at a spa that was supposedly rated #1 in Conde Nast Traveler.... I have NO idea how.
The drive TO the spa is surrounded by messy yards, completely unkept, then you approach a gated property that we're hoping is an amazing spa. As they let us through the gate, we think "wow, it must be nice then"... I admit that the grounds are beautiful, the surroundings are beautiful and even the building looks pretty nice.
We walk into the building to check in and we're greeted by an OVERWHELMING spell of garlic spewing from their restaurant... NOT the pleasant smell you expect from a spa then we glanced into the restaurant to see a cross between a cafeteria-style beverage section/Grandma's old dining tables/diner-style feel. But it was just a glance, so we're hoping we were wrong.
We check in and the receptionist wasn't the most friendly person, then she tells us to go upstairs and make sure we're in the waiting room 5 mins before our massage appts.... but wait, we think.... "Shouldn't they come and find us? This is our day... " We had never been told to watch the clock at any other spas before. Next, we decided we wanted food, but the receptionist informed us that we should expect 90 mins for lunch (WHAT?!). Regardless, we decided to go anyway, ordered food, wished we hadn't, it was HORRIBLE, we think it was microwaved and not "spa quality". At least it only took us 30 mins - thanks Receptionist!
The walk through the facility was freezing, not well-insulated, the decor is horrendous, the robes were like paper, not the plush robes you'd expect, housekeeping was intimidating, not friendly. The sauna fits TWO people... it was ridiculous. How do you call that a spa? The steam room was average at best. The showers were nice, the hot tub was fine.
When I was finally ready for my massage, the woman seriously yelled out my name in the quiet, tacky waiting room, I jumped and ran to catch up with her, she didn't introduce herself, brought me into the massage room, TURNED-ON-THE-RADIO (aren't you supposed to assume the music is naturally there, not like it's turned on with a switch?), luckily the massage was good, THANK GOD.
I will never go back or recommend this spa again. I am shocked at the high praises it has received. I was embarrassed I took my friend here as a "thank you". The whole time we just talked about how we couldn't believe this spa was ranked so high. We agreed it's more like "Conde NASCAR" that rated this spa as #1. -

First off, if you are unhappy shelling out a few hundred bucks for a day at a spa, this place is not for you. However, if you don't mind the splurge, this is totally THE spa to drop your life savings on.
I don't go to spas too often - I'll be honest, I've never been to a day spa outside of the 2-3 facials I've gotten over the last 10 years - but I've been inside of several day spas for various other treatments (waxing if you must know) and this place is 4 steps above the best. It was a simply amazing experience...
The grounds are very well manicured and flat out gorgeous. The amenities are just enough to give you what you need (indoor lap pool, outdoor pool, outdoor jacuzzi and a bunch of separated by sex facilities: jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and outdoor massage tents without being overboard. Everyone there is so relaxed that no matter how stressed you are, you will walk out relaxed. The check in staff was very friendly and upon arrival, gave us a nice tour of the place. You then slip into a robe and flip flops (all provided) and all your stuff is safely tucked into a locker you set your combination for. With any treatment, you get full day use of all the grounds so my girlfriends and I arrived an hour before our first appointment, giving us plenty of time to check in and hit the jacuzzi.
My first treatment was a coffee scrub. You are asked to be in the waiting room 5 minutes before your appointment where refreshments are provided and there is plenty of reading materials and comfy seats of all kind. You then get picked up and escorted to your treatment room - each has a sink and shower so that you do not have to go anywhere during your treatment. I was scrubbed down, took a quick shower, dried off and then massaged for a total of 80 minutes (warning - the coffee smell was a bit too much for me after the first hour so beware if you have a sensitive nose!!).
We then had lunch at the cafe on premises and all the food was delicious - the menu actually made me laugh because each item had the calories and fat grams listed next to it. Cute, eh? Anyways, there were all kinds of options and all sounded so delicious we all had a hard time choosing one thing. Next to the cafe is a complimentary refreshments station which is open all day serving hot tea and coffee, iced water, iced tea and fruit and crackers.
For my second treatment, I got a facial and this was not as pleasant of an experience as I would have hoped. Fate had it that I broke out like crazy that week so the extractions were very painful - to be honest, I think my esthetician was a bit too harsh. But the rest of the facial was very nice and I learned a lot about my skin and what products I should explore. They provide you with a list of all the things they used on you and I took that to their little shop where I felt zero pressure from the sales clerk to purchase anything, yet she answered about a million questions for me!!! I ended up buying a foot pedicure set and decided to hold off on buying the products till I saw how my sensitive skin reacted to them the rest of the day.
All in all, it was a fantastic day even though it was raining when we arrived. I felt super pampered and relaxed and even though I tend to be tight with my money, I didn't regret spending a penny that day! I really cannot wait to go back :) Tip: you can often save money by doing the half day spa package rather than getting two 50 min treatments a la carte as it includes lunch; oh and you get a cookbook too! -

"Attention to detail" should be the slogan for Lake Austin Spa Resort.
Nothing I can say or write will do any justice for the day I had at Conde Nast Traveler magazine's No. 1 destination spa. It was, by far, one of the most fabulous days of my life.
From the moment I entered the gates -- and, yes, there are gates for your privacy and peace of mind -- it was like opening the gates to heaven. The scenery is amazing, with the property being on 19 lakefront acres and far enough away from everyday life that it's easy to get lost in the moment and forget about the daily stresses of life.
To start, there are two separate buildings -- one is the day spa and the other the resort. I had the opportunity to tour both and was beyond impressed with everything I saw. The resort is quite remarkable, housing 40 guestrooms that all face either the lake or private wildflower gardens. In addition to being a place to rest your head, the resort also has a separate dining room for overnight guests, a gift shop, teaching kitchen for when they bring in celebrity chefs for workshops, a fitness facility, private studio for pilates, yoga, etc., as well as a daily list of at least 20 different complimentary activities and programs such as spinning, kickboxing, BodyFlow, kayaking/canoeing, etc. that are included with your overnight stay.
The day spa is another experience within itself. Walking in is like walking into your own house -- or at least how one might dream their own house would be -- feeling extremely cozy and natural. Every room is filled with antiques and art, each with a unique story all their own. After checking in, it's off to the locker room to change into a provided robe and sandals in which you will spend the rest of the day -- until it's pool time, of course.
The time of your spa treatment determines the rest of your day. I arrived a few hours earlier than my treatment, which gave ample time for walking around, relaxing, and grabbing a bite to eat in the Aster Cafe. Before I go on, let me tell you that I opted to eat lunch before changing into my robe and sandals and I was in the minority alongside the waiters in that I was fully clothed. Everyone walks around in their robes like it's the norm -- and it is. My waitress didn't even know to serve me at first because I was "too dressed up."
But I am so glad she did because the food was absolutely superb. I could hardly decide what to order because everything looked so good, but finally settled on the salmon recommended by my server. What made it so difficult to decide was the fact that every dish was so clearly thought out in terms of taste and health, listing the calories and fat grams alongside each item so you know what you're really getting yourself into. They also really focus on portion control, serving what I would call normal-sized meals unlike the ginormous portions we Texans have grown accustomed to. You can, however, request seconds and thirds free of charge if your appetite so pleases. And to add to their already impressive list in the kitchen, all of the ingredients are organic and most of the herbs and veggies are grown on the property or are local.
But what drew me to Lake Austin Spa Resort was their spa services and packages, in particular the Mother/Daughter Delight package which includes an 80-minute aromatherapy massage, a 50-minute pedi/mani, lunch, and access to the facilities for both mother and daughter (hint, hint to all you fathers, sons, and husbands out there). I, myself, enjoyed an 80-minute aromatherapy massage, just one of over 100 treatments to chose from. You can have the massage indoors, outdoors, in a cabana or on a porch, by yourself or together with a friend or significant other. The list goes on and on. Did I mention attention to detail?
In order to decide the types of oils used in their aromatherapy massage, each person fills out a short survey asking questions about your level of activity, stress, etc. to make it even more personal. I sort of defeated the whole purpose of the survey by choosing specific scents I liked as opposed to oils that catered to a specific state of being (i.e. "revived," "de-stressed," or "relaxed"). I had lavender for my face and limbs and for my back, a relaxer oil that heats to the touch. The treatment began with the lights dimmed, me tucked nicely under the sheets, and my choice between five different kinds of music. I couldn't name them all, but I chose the Austin-themed music and we were off. Before I knew it, the 80 minutes had come and gone, but while it was happening it felt like eternity.
After the massage, I was free to roam and take advantage of the premises as I pleased. Having to choose between swimming pools, whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms almost seemed impossible.
It was a fabulous day in the life of Megan on that blessed Tuesday and I highly recommend you give it a try. -

Lake Austin Spa Resort has good food and a great location on the lake, the problem is the services are OK at best.
Massage and facials are two to three times more expensive than the rest of Austin and the quality is just average. The location and food can't make up for quality of services. We've been to the spa a few times over the last 5 years and we won't be back. For the same $500, a day in Austin hotels offer the same services including the cost of your room. -

Voted #2 Destination Spa by Conde Nast Traveler 2007, this place certainly lives up to the hype. This was my first spa experience and I am definitely glad to have started off on the right foot!
I went last summer to their Lake House Spa for a "girls retreat." Upon arrival, they printed each of us an itinerary of our treatments. Since I am a spa virgin, I won't comment about the treatments because I have nothing to compare it to. But I will tell you that I signed up for the 70min Lake House River Rock Massage and added a rose facial. You can either choose treatments "a la carte" or choose one of their spa packages.
Personally, I thought the treatments were on the pricey side (but this is to be expected since it is the #2 Destination Spa). However, since this was a special occasion/splurge, I thought it was worth every penny!! I loved every minute of my massage, but the facial was a a little more painful than I expected (only because I had no clue extractions were a part of the process).
The treatments are upstairs and the lobby/cafe/change rooms are downstairs. The upstairs has a huge waiting room with comfortable lounging chairs to relax in before the specialist comes to get you. The spa ground is ridiculously large with a junior sized Olymic swimming pool in the Pool Barn. The Aster Cafe had a nice lunch menu where we could just waltz in with our robes in between our treatments. There were also snacks, tea, fresh fruit and water available all day.
In short, Lake Austin Spa was relaxing and luxurious, without being pretentious and stuffy. I look forward to going back here again!! -

In all honesty, this place really isn't bad... but there are a few things that didn't make my experience as pleasurable as possible...
1. I paid $15 for a tortilla with cheese in it.
2. It is in the middle of nowhere... be prepared to drive for at least 30-45 minutes outside Austin. The drive alone will get you tense enough to enjoy a massage, so I guess that's the point.
3. I could think of better ways to spend money on my health/well-being, and the older women walking around naked in the locker room kinda freaked me out a little.
Other than that, it was a delightful experience. The massage I got was great. I would suggest the Aromatherapy massage because they have you pick what oils will best fit your needs (e.g. if you are stressed, they may suggest some chamomile or peppermint oils). Besides, who doesn't like pretty scented oils being rubbed all over their body?! -

I received a gift certificate for a 1/2 day package for Christmas and was very eager to give it a try. I had always thought that Lake Austin Spa was a fat camp for the Austin wealthy, but I guess they have expanded the facilities and have included a beautiful day spa.
I had a deep tissue massage and rehydration facial. I have been to a lot of spas in my day (I am old..lol) but I really thought that the services and ambiance here were worth the extra money. Please note it is NOT cheap at $110 for a 50 min service, but I don't think you will have to worry about not receiving a quality technician and experience. Also, the Blue Room is absolutely stunning. You can also hang out there as long as you want, or till they kick you out. :) Another note that I learned, on Sun - Thurs you get a full day pass to the facilities free-of-charge with any appointment, even a nail polish change. Something to keep in mind!! They have a beautiful pool, both indoor and outdoor, sauna, etc. Really a unique place, I'll go back once I have some money saved. :) Oh, only giving it a 4 of 5 because of price. -

Lake Austin Spa resort is a beautiful spa. The grounds and facility are all top notch. So for ambiance they get 5 stars.
But as for service, the downside was.
1) when ever i have been to a spa the protocal is to fill out your intake form prior to your treatment, the staff did not hand me any paper work, until we were on our way to start the massage, therefore i felt rushed and had less time for the service.
2) you are not allowed to use the fitness facility even for an additional fee, i personally like to work out a bit before getting my massage.
3) you are not allowed to even see what the resort or fitness side even look like. I was hoping on our next trip to stay at the resort, but this lack of customer service soured our experience. -

My visit to Lake Austin Spa couldn't have come at a better time in my life. I spent my last Saturday as a single woman relaxing at this amazing location. Lake Austin has everything you could ever imagine from a high-end spa. Let me go into more detail!
After receiving my fantastic gift certificate for a half day at Lake Austin, I popped onto the website to learn more about what I had in store for me. The website is incredibly informative with vast information on all the spa procedures, times, and prices. I was able to book my procedures on-line. I quickly received a phone call to confirm times and to give me some tips on what to expect and what to bring. Excellent!
The drive is a bit out of the way, if you are coming in from central Austin. Make sure and plan ahead by at least 45 minutes. Lake Austin is located out in Steiner Ranch land. Once you enter the area, you need to go thru a security gate. Check-in was a cinch! Since it was my first time, I was given the tour of the spa. Everything is placed very close together so you aren't trekking across the grounds to get to your appointment. Plus you get to walk around in a robe. I loved it.
The half day package includes (2) 50-min procedures, a lunch and full use of the sauna, steam room, and pools. I would highly recommend planning your entire day at the spa. Arrive early and stay late. I chose the Seaweed Sensation body treatment: "A purifying scrub, shower and oil application. First, a seaweed scrub removes toxins from your skin. After a shower with sea algae shower gel, you'll sink into a soothing application of laminaria grapeseed oil." Then on to lunch. Lunch includes a soup and salad, then an entree choice. The food options on the menu includes a calorie count, which is incredibly handy. All of the food was delicious and cooked with healthy seasonings and dressings. My second procedure was a "C The Difference Anti-Aging Facial": "A facial designed for skin that's dehydrated, environmentally damaged or just getting older. This specially chosen combination of products uses Vitamin C and other natural ingredients to leave your skin feeling and looking more youthful, with a radiant, firmer complexion." Honestly, this was the best facial of my life. My skin is still glowing.
I spent the rest of my time lounging at the pool, enjoying ice cold water, a good book and a beautiful day of fantastic Austin weather. I can't stop raving about my experience. Everyone was outstanding. Yes, it is very pricey but it's worth it. Consider yourself lucky to live in a city that houses the #1 rated destination spa in North American. I'll be back when my bank account heals next year. -

There are so many reasons why this place is so highly rated. I've been to many spas around the US and worldwide and Lake Austin Spa is, by far, one of the best. I head to Austin a few times a year and I always stop by this place for a treatment or two. The services, food, and staff are fantastic and the grounds are simply stunning. This place is a wonderful retreat from everyday life and is perfect for just an afternoon of pampering or, if you can spend the bucks, a few days of relaxation. I particularly love their coffee scrub treatment.
Listed in: I love Austin!

I seriously can't believe this places receives the awards it has. I have been twice, and both times there were squawking women in the "relaxing waiting area" and the staff did nothing about it. The room is super bright like a morning room in a home instead of being relaxing it was disturbing at best.
My massages themselves were fine, not extraordinary, just fine. I would NEVER return. Go to Miraval, such a better experience! -

Great spa in a beautiful setting although sometimes the waiting room on the 2nd floor gets noisy and crowded. Food is good. Generally service is good. My only complaint is the manicure/pedicure room. Instead of comfy massage chairs you sit on an uncomfortable bench when you get a pedicure. I wouldn't recommend paying their prices for a pedicure when you can go to any number of mani/pedi joints that have much more comfortable chairs and ambiance than Lake Austin Spa.

This spa has received a pile of national accolades over the last few years, including being named the #5 spa in the U.S. by Zagat's. Whoa. I've never stayed in the resort, but I have used their spa, and I have to agree that it is damn nice. I was lucky enough to get a massage and a pedicure on the same day, with lunch in between treatments. So I basically got to hang out in a big, fluffy robe for several hours while I was pampered from head to toe. The pedicure was the best I've ever experienced; the products they used smelled amazing and the nail technician did a great job. The massage, on the other hand, was solidly mediocre. She didn't get deep enough, even though I repeatedly told her that I liked deep tissue massage. So that was kind of disappointing, especially since having a pile of national accolades apparently means you can charge a lot more than everyone else for the same service.
Fortunately for them, they have this gorgeous room for people to hang out and relax in while they're waiting for their toes to dry/next spa service/sugar daddy to come get them, and it was so peaceful and calming that I promptly forgot about my so-so massage and fell in love with the place all over again. -

If Yelp had 10 stars , I would give this place a 10. I went to Lake Austin Spa Resort, sometimes in last April, after looking it up in Spa finder magazine(i am complete sucker for glossy pictures!).The place is a 45 mins drive from downtown. But its kinda scenic, as scenic as TX can be(and no i dont mean it in a bad way!) They have to buzz you in, so i guess an appointment would be necessary. You can use there cafe for lunch/snack. I invited a friend to join me for lunch, but i guess only guest are allowed. However, they made an exception.
The chef customizes everything according to what you want , and ofcourse the fare is pretty healthy.
We sat out side, and looked at the pretty lake,(river, ok i can never get that straight), and the extremely well kept green property surrounding it. After my friend left, i went to the pool, to swim a couple of laps, and then went in for my sea scrub body treatment which was just marvelous!! Seriously, never had anything like that. It smelled wonderful. My skin felt so refreshed. OMG, you have to try it. -

I've been going to this place a couple times a year since 2005. Sadly it has been slowly going downhill due to overpopulation by Lakeway bitches (male and female) who feel the need to stroll the entire grouds yapping at full volume about their "problems" in life (examples of things I've heard, not overheard, but heard because people are that loud: "sigh, this is the last time I get to relax before we go to the Bahamas in two weeks." "my nanny wants to work only 40 hours/week now!"....etc.). Yeah, you paid $600 to come here today, but SO DID I, and I'd like to relax, not hear you and your husband in your deliberately exaggerated southern drawl guffawing about something dumb you saw in the gift shop. If the staff would just call these people out on their loudness that would help a lot.
Also, if you find a massuse/facialist you like, remember their name and ask for them again, because I've found that quality of service can really vary from person to person. -

My mom and I went to Lake Austin Spa last week to spend a few hours relaxing and celebrating her birthday. This was my 3rd time to visit the spa as a day guest and it was definately my best experience yet. I saw an increased focus on the customer and received excellent service from the front desk, to my spa treatment to the servers in the restaurant. EVERYONE went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed.
The thing that has stuck out in my mind and prompted me to write a review is how the entire staff helped look for earrings I had left in the pocket of my robe. We left the spa and by the time I realized my earrings were gone, the robe had been moved. This was like looking for a needle in a haystack. I hated the thought of losing my pearl earrings, but I was resigned to the fact that there was no way they would be found.
Within minutes of my call, I learned that the entire staff was searching for my earrings. The SPA DIRECTOR was personally on the case! I received updates and multiple communications from them. They found one, so I assumed the search was over, but then to my suprise I got another email a day later saying they had found the OTHER earring.
They didn't have to go out of their way, but they did. They didn't have to care about my earrings and my mistake of losing them, but they did. They could have quickly looked and only followed up once with me, but they didn't. They went all the way. The spa and resort was just as beautiful as it's ever been, the services and food great, but the customer service was the memorable part of my time there and I will be back! -

I've been to the Lake Austin Spa Resort several times over the past two years, and I love it. I'm not a big fan of massages in general, so when I go I normally get my eye brows waxed and pedis and haircuts and stuff like that. And I have NEVER been disapointed! About two weeks ago I went and took my mom and we had the very best time. I got a hair cut with Issa while I was there and I have to say she is a genius! She spent so much time talking with me about how I normally do my hair and what problems I have with it and what I'd really be willing to do style-wise every morning. I got the best hair cut of my life. It is the cutest cut I've had and I will be doing all of my hair cuts with Issa from now on. I also got a great brow wax from Amy and it was also great.
My mom got a massage, I think she was with a guy named Tony, and all I can say is after her massage I met up with her in the beautiful massage waiting room and she was so blissed-out that she was stumbling around! Afterwards, we spent a glorious day in the pool, hot tub, and just on the grounds in general. Everything was so pretty, it's hard to believe you are in Texas! And all of the buildings/waiting rooms and such are really pretty too, all nicely decorated sort of in a classic casual way, not cheap and glitz-y if you know what I mean.
Also the staff is great at Lake Austin Spa Resort. I've only ever been as a day guest, but the staff at the spa end is wonderful. They are all so nice and friendly, yet very unobtrusive. Everything was always stocked and clean and there is always someone on hand to grab you a fresh towl or robe should you need it.
So over all, this is the perfect place to spend a day relaxing and either treating yourself or showing off how great Austin is to a loved one. -

This place is beautiful. Some of the most attractive grounds I've seen. The waiting room for massages is comfortable and interesting. My massage just wasn't that good. I've had lots of massages. The masseuse had a mediocre touch, and spoke about her life's problems in full voice. I hinted that I was going to just quiet down and breathe a bit, which worked. Still, for the price, I should not be complaining about the skills here.

I love love LOVE the grounds. The lake, the hammock, and the area for lunch is just stunning.
I did like my facial and found her to be very good. The body treatment was OK, I felt the girl was a little inexperienced to be honest. I also thought my pedicure was mediocore at best. I can get a better pedicure in a nail salon in a shopping center.
What gave it four stars? Service and atmosphere. I loved that I couldn't have my cell phone. -

The spa is set along a chunk of Lake Austin, and even in February it was just gorgeous. We stayed for two nights. The whole place is built around their gardens of herbs and greens and flowers, which they use in their restaurants. When you check in, you receive a schedule of classes and events (all of which are included) and a pair of very comfy spa sandals. They tell you that everyone's welcome to just wear their huge, squishy terry robes everywhere, which I disdained the first day and then totally embraced by the second evening. The setting is very pretty, and the walk from the rooms to the spa is just gorgeous.
All your food is included, and is actually incredibly tasty and good - since they list all the calorie counts, you can be good if you want to, or if you're more interested in experimenting than calorie-counting (we, sadly, fell into this category) there's a wonderful variety and array of dishes. My favorite cut-and-paste dinner would have been the manchego cheese flan (60 calories-less than a mini-snickers - gorgeous and creamy anyway),a fennel, orange, and frisee salad, and perfectly cooked lamb chops with a wild honey-orange-rosemary glaze. Even dessert was amazing - we were so shameless we had a second one sent to our room later with room service - there's both a blueberry cobbler and a mocha-glazed chocolate cake that I'm remembering fondly. Breakfast and lunch were good, too - my favorite lunch was a smoked pulled-turkey bbq sandwich with peach chutney, coleslaw, and vinegary sauce, and followed by swirled peach and vanilla frozen yogurt (not TCBY - made with local peaches and vanilla beans, mmm). Hors d'oeuvres are served at 3, too, and you also have the option to do room service most of the day if you just can't be bothered to go out.
There are tons and tons of exercise classes, with all kinds of styles - yoga and stretching all the way to hard-core marathon training, kickboxing, etc. They have kayaks and water-bikes for rent, and trips away from the site to hike or train. There are also a ton of specialists around who will give you one-on-one training and workshops on other related topics - we failed to make our posture analysis session, for example, because we ended up falling asleep in a double hammock by the river. And we took a great cooking class with the executive chef.
There are reading rooms all over the place with a mix of "smart" and cheesy books, the best of which is in the spa itself, the "Blue Room". It's worth going an hour or two early for spa treatments just to hang out by the big fireplace in your robe on the various ridiculously comfortable chairs, chaises, and sofas. You need time to try out more than one...The staff is completely casual and friendly and anxious to please - they manage to convince you they'll do anything you ask without seeming sycophantic. There are a couple of pools, two outdoor and one indoor, a hot tub, and lots of outdoor spa "rooms" where they can do any treatment if you ask ahead. The special treat is supposed to be the "Bamboo Room" designed for couples, but we missed that, sadly.
I had an "Olive My Love" treatment, crazy decadence - you start with a ground-olive-pit scrub over your entire body, neck to toe, then take a shower off in an in-room shower. Then you're doused in gobs of warmed, scented olive oil and wrapped up in warm towels so that it all soaks in - when they wrapped me up, I was dripping in sauce, and when I came back out there wasn't a drop on me, so it had to go somewhere! As you're absorbing, the masseuse massages your scalp with olive oil - totally satisfying, she kind of pulls the roots of your hair as well as rubs the scalp, so soothing - then moves on to a gentle face massage. Then she unwraps you to give you a full-body massage for 50 minutes, using more scented olive oil. By that point, you're basically liquid...and as silky as anyone's ever going to be, everywhere. And a deep-tissue massage on another day was equally amazing. I'll make the drive again, for sure, for that.
It's crazy expensive to stay overnight, so even though it's incredible, I might not do that again, at least not often; but the spa is absolutely a must if you want to feel completely pampered and renewed. (Spa is $$$, about average spa cost but better value than most, resort is $$$$, all-inclusive.) -

WOW!!! I've been going here once a year as a treat for my birthday, but it seems to really be going down hill. none of my usual therapist work there anymore. I spent $550 dollars on three treatments:
1) manicure and pedicure - dirt left in the nail beds of hands and feet. I could have done better with a toothpick. and the therapist hands were covered in warts and i mean covered!!! i was freaked out the entire time, not relaxing at all, rather i wanted to run out of there.
2) custom comfort massage - amazing and experienced therapist really was attentive and talented. I enjoyed the experience immensely.
3) the custom facial - the nearly drowned in the steam she had blowing directly on my face. There where no aroma therapy. She preformed extractions with her nails and missed several trouble spots. When i was in the restroom i noticed she even left masque in my hairline, under my nose, and lips.
the other spa attendees did not seem to get the "spa experience." Most where comparing and trying to "one up" each other on their lives, marital troubles, and menial/trivial experiences (several were on cell phones, one talking about finances with daughter or friend, difficulty with school teachers, etc...) rather than being considerate and relaxing. The grounds are beautiful and private which came in handy when needing to escape.
next year i'll most likely use the money to go on a trip elsewhere.
in addition there is a "private" garden in the men locker room with a shower and sunning chairs.. the only problem is that the waiting room/blue room looks right down into it!!! So no telling how many people give away free shows! -

This place is awesome! I got a package of 3 services as a graduation gift and it was just what I needed. The staff was very friendly and professional. I got a massage, spa pedicure and facial. I'm not much for facials, that was my least favorite service, but all the services were very relaxing and well-done. One of my favorite experiences was being able to lounge around the campus in between services. The food was wonderful too.
