if you want to go to the north shore, but don't have hundred dollar bills flying out of your ass (some people do, and there's nothing wrong with that), this is a great place to stay. it's CHEAP ($89/night when i was there in february), and while the spa facilities leave something to be desired, it is relatively clean and comfortable.
much more importantly, it's a a GREAT location.
1) you walk outside, cross the road, and you're on the beach. or if you have a car, there are a couple of public beaches scattered along that strip of the kamehameha highway that are all really nice and pretty deserted.
2) you are right next door to the mcdonalds. i know you didn't go all that way to have a mcchicken, but the hawaii mcdonalds all do spam and/or portugese sausage breakfasts. i recommend the sausage biscuit sandwich, with spam substituted for the sausage. trust me, just ask for it. they'll do it.
3) it's about a 5 minute drive from giovanni's shrimp truck, which is YES a truck on the side of the road that sells you seafood, but don't be squeamish--it's delicious. you'll burp garlic for hours.
the staff there is very friendly and nice. they provide clean towels and sheets, soap, shampoo, and all of that. tv exists, but you have to sit next to it so you can push the buttons and change the channels. but why are you watching tv anyway? go out! there IS air conditioning, which is good at night. our unit was incredibly loud, but if you can sleep through it then it's fine.
(oh, and there was a teeny tiny cockroach on the ceiling on the 3rd morning. but no biggie.)
