I love this place, I try to go there at least once a week. They have the usual combo dishes that all Mexican places have, but also some delicious shrimp dishes. The service is great, and everyone who works there is very friendly.
They have a great patio which is perfect for sunny days and Margaritas. Also, they have an excellent tequila selection

I don't get to Des Moines very often, so I don't know if there are a lot of other choices for Mexican food in that area. Trust me. If there are other choices, choose them over Lago Azul.
We went to Lago Azul last weekend to see a friend's band, and even though they knew of the event they were SEVERELY under-staffed. It took 45 minutes to get a drink. It took another 45 minutes to place a food order. A friend jumped behind the bar to help wash glasses, and the management was so overwhelmed they didn't even mind.
We finally ordered some chicken nachos and taquitos. The nachos were just fine, but the taquitos were dry and tasteless.
The margaritas were heavy on the sweet and sour and light on the tequila. The kind of sweet and sour that gives you heartburn. Ick.

Use to be owned by an outstanding family. But, now its has new owners. And, they have some workers that seem a little rough around the edges that cook in the kitchen. The former family and staff was dynamite and offered a warm inviting vibe. I am not expecting them to have good food like mexico, southwest or so forth. But, they have very lackluster food now. One friend says that they were very to her guest because of their background! Whatever the case, I just find the food awful now. Or, so so depending on the dish.
My boyfriend and I have been to Lago Azul at least five times since we have lived in Des Moines. Two of these times have been on Cinco de Mayo. Food is always fresh, staff is friendly and the flavors are great. The chips and salsa are also fresh and tasty and the salad they serve with them is also good. We love to eat here and it is very authentic.
New Owners.. Food quality is excellent. Chicken Mexician is my favorite. Very spicy, but good flavor. The margarita's which they used to be famous for (old owners) are not the same. Good selection of beers. Try those. The salmon is typically good. Arroz Con Pollo and Camerones Con Pollo are also excellent. If you have not tried them out. Do! Staff is helpful and it's family owned. Let's keep them in business.
