Love the $6.99 combos, and the service is SUPER FAST. If you're looking for a great lunch, you can't go wrong.
I usually just have the enchiladas, one of my favorite mexican dishes, but I have given the other combo's a shot as well and they were all great. I don't drink much for lunch (of course) so i can't really speak to the cocktails. Perhaps when I have been by for dinner I will give them a shot and then post up a modified review. -

If you happen to be in Des Moines, and are craving good Mexican food, this is not the place to stop. You're better off going to Taco Time, Taco Bell or even Jack in the Box for their 99€ tacos and jalapeño poppers.
The service may be decent, but that's only due to the fact that no one eats here. The food is gross. I walked out feeling like I needed a bath. There is less grease in a cheeseburger at McDonald's, than anything ordered here.
This could all have been ignored if I had a good margarita...but no. Nothing sucks more than a BAD margarita. -

Loved the ranchera chicken enchiladas!! Our server was very professional and timely. I loved the chips and salsas as well!! Go for the quesedillas with extra jalapeños for a warm up and Negro modelo for the salt and lime. You will leave full!!
Great Job to the waiter who has served me and saved my hat every time!! I had the super burrito last night and my friends loved the chicken fajitas!! I go later in the evening to avoid crowds and this place is a great option for Des Moines! -

So this was probably my second time going here. The first time, I don't really remember my experience -- because it's been years! But I was able to visit yesterday because my sister and her boyfriend wanted to go eat lunch, and some where local (they live near H.C.C) My sister kept telling me about this spinach enchilada that was really good, so I decided to give it a try. I was originally going to order a "small appetite" (I forgot if that's what it was even called?) it was a good combo deal for about $9+.
We got to the restaurant around 5pm or so, and there was a couple of people at the bar. Within the time that we sat down and got our food and everything, there were a couple more groups there. They served us some chips, salsa, bean dip (we asked for it), and some veges. I loved the refills on my coke as well! Even when it was half way, I was still able to get a refill!
So to cut this short, I had a great time. The waitress had a sense of humor as she was handing my plate (since I'm a vegetarian) she said "cheeseburger". A good laugh. The Spinach Enchilada, I forgot the spelling but it's Enchilada Espinaca? It was delicious! The meal came with two enchiladas, great sauce over it, pinto beans & rice. I wasn't able to finish the whole thing, so it was a great snack later!
We also shared a fried ice cream, it was pretty good. It was smaller than the Azteca one, but three of us were able to have some!
If I'm ever back in Des Moines, I'll definitely visit for some Mexican Food! -

Lago Azul offers 4.99 lunch specials! Comes with hot chips and delicious salsa, seriously how can you go wrong? And the food is very very good. Piping hot with excellent flavor. The wait staff is friendly and you never have to ask for a refill of water or soda. It doesn't get 5 stars because I think they need to fix their bathrooms (can only speak for the womens one), the papertowel holder has been broken for years and its just not that appealing.

I don't get to Des Moines very often, so I don't know if there are a lot of other choices for Mexican food in that area. Trust me. If there are other choices, choose them over Lago Azul.
We went to Lago Azul last weekend to see a friend's band, and even though they knew of the event they were SEVERELY under-staffed. It took 45 minutes to get a drink. It took another 45 minutes to place a food order. A friend jumped behind the bar to help wash glasses, and the management was so overwhelmed they didn't even mind.
We finally ordered some chicken nachos and taquitos. The nachos were just fine, but the taquitos were dry and tasteless.
The margaritas were heavy on the sweet and sour and light on the tequila. The kind of sweet and sour that gives you heartburn. Ick.
No thanks. -

I love this place, I try to go there at least once a week. They have the usual combo dishes that all Mexican places have, but also some delicious shrimp dishes. The service is great, and everyone who works there is very friendly.
They have a great patio which is perfect for sunny days and Margaritas. Also, they have an excellent tequila selection -

Have been going here for years. It seems like they've dropped of a little bit in service and in food quality. Still a solid bet for mexican food if you're in the area. They have a pretty decent happy hour.

My boyfriend and I have been to Lago Azul at least five times since we have lived in Des Moines. Two of these times have been on Cinco de Mayo. Food is always fresh, staff is friendly and the flavors are great. The chips and salsa are also fresh and tasty and the salad they serve with them is also good. We love to eat here and it is very authentic.
