Review from P A.
San Diego, CA
We were going to visit family in the Sacramento area this past winter holiday and had a Groupon to stay here for a night. It totally exceeded our expectations!
From the moment we got there until we left, the staff was so friendly and helpful. We had a service-dog with us, they didn't even bat an eye when we checked in and were very accommodating to our needs.
The heated outdoor pool and spa was amazing for an early-morning swim. They have a small indoor gym next to the pool and I was surprised by the number and variety of machines and stuff they had since most hotels that have small gyms only have like 1 treadmill. My wife sat by the pool at the outdoor fireplace which was nice for such a crisp day. The actual hotel is quite small but they make up for it by having a great outdoor patio you can walk around in and chic dining facilities.
We traveled all over during the holiday and my wife has a bad back so sleeping in different beds can trigger spasms for her. Out of the 5 different places we stayed within our week and a half trip, the Lafayette was the only place where my wife's back didn't act up and she got one of the best sleeps of her life.
While we were there, it seemed there was also a family reunion staying at the hotel, probably about 30 or so of them together. So it seems the hotel is also good for groups and such.Comment from Tony E. of Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa 1/18/2012

HOW FUNNY! I was at the spa and had the same exact 'package' as the poster right before me...Nicolette. But I dont know her! We must have passed in the hall!
**This review is for SPA only!!**
Booked 2 Mini-spa packages for my friend and I which included a 50 minute massage and a 50 minute facial. Her experience was great, mine was a 'little less great'.
First of all, booking the appt.s with Helena was a breeze! She was very nice, very accommodating (trying to book 2 people, 2 services back-to-back with only 4 days notice)... 5 STARS for Helena and reservations!
We arrived about 1/2 hour early so we could sit in the hot tub before our services. Led to a very small changing room/locker room... small but nice. Lockers, robes, nice shower, all the stuff you need (lotions, blow dryer, q-tips).... just really small. If it were just my friend and I, no problem. But there were 2 other people in there-- it was CRAMPED! There is a nice relaxation room between the pool/spa area and the locker room- nice quiet setting with couches and tea and water and fresh fruit. 4 STARS for the amenities.
Now onto the massage. I cant speak for my friend (other than that she said hers was FAB!) but my massage was just sort of so-so. My gal (dont want to call her out publicly here!) just didnt seem to know how to massage. I felt like she was just rubbing lotion on my back, and rubbing my neck and back, like my husband does. I mean, it feels good, but you want your massage therapist to hit the spots that a trained professional knows about. She didnt do that. I asked for more pressure, got a little more, but it just wasnt great. I was so looking forward to the foot part of the massage (since we originally wanted pedis, but they dont offer nail svcs here)... I know it's not long, but I LOVE having my feet rubbed. However, it was like she wasnt even using any pressure at all. It was the most disappointing part of thr massage- and it as only for about a minute. SAD ME! I have to say, any massage and rubbing is better than none, and it does feel good... but this was probably the worst massage I've had (and I get them fairly often!) 2.5 STARS ON MASSAGE
Facial with Natasha was EXCELLENT! Never had one before -loved it! massaging the face and neck and chest, lots of hot and cool lotions on the face, steam, hot towels, exfoliating... it was great! 5 STARS for FACIAL!
I agree with previous poster-- not really a 'package'. We paid $185 each (plus tips) for massage and facial... Overall had a great time! Will come back for facial!
Lots of good lunch places nearby on Mt. Diablo (Chow, El Charro, etc) - food at hotel way too expensive! -
Review from Nicole S.
Walnut Creek, CA
This is a review of the Spa- Facial and Massage.
Lets start with the massage-
1) Darcy- I get massages pretty regularly and if you read my reviews I am pretty fair and honest when I yelp. I dont go too nice or too hard I just review how it went. Darcy really was the best massage I have had because of her technique. I have never been that relaxed before, its really hard for me to relax and I fell asleep a few times during the massage. There is something she does to yoru feet, its seriously heaven, I dont know how to describe it but its heavenly. Darcy is really good at knowing how the body is connected because she touches one small part on your neck or foot and you can feel it release tenson in the rest of your body instantly. She has a very natural approach and a very healing touch. It really was a massage I didnt want to end. Most of the time when you get a massage you are kind of like ok now they are doing my legs, ok now my arms, and you kind of just go through the motions. WIth Darcy though it is just a smooth relaxing heavenly massage that you really dont want to end.
2) The Facial was really good , totally standard and they use good products- Pevonia. If you like a more natural organic approach this would be the place to go. I usually go to SKin Spiriti in Walnut Creek and I will most likely stick with them just because they are close and they offer more medical like services. however, no complaints on the facial. They know what they are doing and these women work really hard to make you feel comfortable and happy. I came out with glowing skin and she was a very knoweldgeable facialist.
My ONLY complaints are-
1) having to walk outside , out of the spa, and into the hotel in an unflattering robe to get to the massage room. Kind of annoying but you forget about it instantly.
2) The price. Sorry but this is NOT a deal. Dont call it a mini spa day if its $185 and you get a 50 min masage and a facial. What it really is is just a normal facial and massage at regular prices. If its a special package like you market add in some foot or eye treatement or something else or lower the price, but really I just bought two services if you think about it. Nothing saved so it really isnt a package. -

The grounds are beautiful, and the overall feel of the hotel is really nice. Our room, however, was a total let down.
The bath robes had long black curly hairs on them. They had clearly been worn and not laundered. Eww. The bathtub had black mold in a good portion of the grout. Eww, again. The bed was terribly uncomfortable, hard as a rock.
The doorframe was really messed up, and it appeared it had been opened with a pry bar or something of the sort. You could see light from the hallway through the doorjam.Comment from Tony E. of Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa 1/26/2012

So we stayed here to get away from the kids. It was meant to be a relaxing night out. First, we found out the Duck Club wasn't open on Sunday and Monday- that was disappointing. Then we found out our TV didn't work- on all channels it emitted a high pitched very loud note- constantly. Also, the people above us were very loud- sounded like they were doing jumping jacks. The bathroom had grout problems, but it was nice in most other ways- although the water pressure is pretty low. The bed was comfortable, and the rooms are fairly large. There was a fridge, and some very overpriced drinks.
I think the most annoying part of our stay was finding out this place wanted to rip us off for 10 bucks for a "parking fee"- for parking our own car in their nearly empty lot. Talk about a loser move. Way to make guests feel nickle and dimed. We sure won't go back, or recommend it to anyone. I can understand a parking fee in a place like SF- but in a hotel next to a graveyard, with no view, in a nothing special town? Go figure. -

San Francisco, CA
This is a review of the spa...I try to once a month come here to get a facial and massage. Yes, I live in San Francisco and I come all the way out to Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa for these services because they are that great! I have tried numerous places in Marin County, San Francisco, and the East Bay because I am quite picky...either the masseuses were too chatty. Hello, I am trying to relax, not make a new friend! Or, I have come across esthetician who use products too strong for my skin type or I left with my skin feeling like what it did when I came in. This is not the case at Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa.
If you get their early enough you can use the pool & hot tub to relax before your treatment. Or do like myself and take advantage of the overhead showerhead and let all your stress rinse away down the drain. You are initially usually greeted by a woman (whose name escapes me, sorry) who has a lovely accent, and is ever so warm and friendly. She will show you how the spa works if it is your first time. You wait for your services in the "Relaxation Room" which is filled with magazines to read, comfy places to relax, tranquil music, a great tea selection, and an amazing basket of a variety of fruits to eat. They are constantly checking to make sure that as soon as the fruit runs low or anything like that they are there to replenish. Last time I had the most delicious grapes while I waited. Yummers!
I have experienced quite a great deal of their services and one of the services that is a must try (outside of your normal massage & facial treatments) is the "Hair & Scalp Treatment". First, it is a special blend of different herbs & oils that are a great deep conditioner for your hair & scalp. Secondly, because if you have not felt the heaven of having solely your head rubbed & massaged you are definitely missing out. It was the first time I understood why when I rub my lil doggie on that special place behind her ear her leg involuntarily starts moving!
Lastly, I want to speak about Aurea Fonseca-Geen, who is not only an esthetician, but the spa coordinator. She is absolutely an amazing esthetician and an delight to have an appointment with. She is beyond knowledgeable of her field and helps you better understand your skin, and honestly answers the question "Of the products you used today, what do I really need?" She doesn't push products on you and if you are unsure about anything she will give you a sample so you are able to test it yourself and come to an informed conclusion. If at all you are looking for a new esthetician or even just a one time thing to get you started on the path to healthy & clear skin setup an appointment with Aurea.
If they had a steam room or sauna they would get 5 stars, as that is the only thing that is missing from this great place. -

The Lafayette Park Hotel is a French designed hotel that has several different accommodations, spacious rooms, wonderful employees and a nice serene atmosphere.
Pros:
Service: From the valet to the front desk, service was extremely friendly and all the house keepers at the hotel greeted you where ever you go. Which made you feel welcoming when you enter this hotel and everyone was more then willing to help you with whatever you need.
Rooms: Spacious, clean and well decorated. The rooms had a book shelf filled with classical books which added a nice touch. The bathroom was large and the decor all matched the room which was great.
Atmosphere: The place is beautifully decorated with a fantastic outside patio and a serene pool area that added a nice touch.
Accommodations: They have a variety of different accommodations that include a couple of fantastic restaurants located inside the hotel, a pool, spa, massage services, coffee and tea in the hallways during certain times of the day and much more.
Cons:
Location: The only negative quality of the hotel is the odd location.
Internet: I would think that a hotel that accommodates so many business meetings would have free access to wifi, but unfortunately it was a $10 charge for internet access.
Overall this hotel is a great place to stay to get away from the business of life and wanting a peace of relaxation. Also majority of the guest here seems to be businessmen whose there for a business meetings. -

My husband and I stayed here for our 5 year anniversary after finding a "facebook deal" that included a 30 gift card for the spa or restaurant. First there was lots of confusion when I booked the room. I called at night and was told to leave my name and they would call be back in a few moments, an hour later (past 9pm) my phone rang. Then the woman couldn't make the reservation. I called back in the am only to be told once again they would call me back. Once on the phone with the right person, we were told that we would have a king bed on the top floor. My husband was so excited, and so was I about the view, but....
When we checked in it was a queen bed on the 2nd floor, the switched us to a king but couldn't give us the top floor. We were both disappointed, we then found out the gc couldn't be used for a long long list of things. Again disappointed but it would be fine.
Our room was beautiful, clean and everything we needed but we once again had problems when we went to check out. Our "deal" wasn't properly put into the computer so they wanted to charge our cc the remainder of what a normal stay would have cost us. The manager was called and it was all cleared up, or so I thought....
A month later I received a call from the hotel about our stay. When I got the vm, I wondered why they would call so long after our stay. I called back and they wanted to know the code for the deal we bought. I had long ago gotten rid of that email and we had already given them TWO copies (one at check in and one at check out) of it. I spent a good 20 minutes on the phone before I asked for the manager, and then once I spoke to her and she couldn't get it cleared up. It took me going above her head before they stopped threatening to charge my cc for the bill.
Moral of my story, if you stay here keep a copy of your bill for a few months, or just pay full price. :p -

Live in SF and need a break from the bad summer weather? Take a staycation... Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa is a charming hotel about 40 minutes away. It's really summertime in the East Bay; warm poolside weather.
Front desk people were all nice and welcoming... The gal at the pool was incredibly friendly and super attentive.
It may be tough to get a chair by the pool because the area is quite small so get down there early, like 10:30am
Rooms are nice, beds cushy and the shower head was fantastic.. We'll be back a few more times this summer!Comment from Tony E. of Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa 8/23/2011

I was attending a Christmas party at my employers home. The company booked the room and put their credit card down for payment. When I checked in, they asked for my credit card for incidentals. So far, no problem. However, even though my boss walked up to the front desk 30 seconds after me the hotel clerk still charged my credit card for the room. They also put a hold on my credit card for $550 for incidentals on top of charging me for the room! When I called the hotel I was told, "oh so sorry, yes, it says right here which card to charge". Simple mistake but costly! So I get a charge on my card for almost $800. I'm still awaiting the refund for their mistake. Yeah.
I don't think I'll be recommending the Lafayette Park to ANYONE. -

Spent the night because of an early morning conference and was pleased to find a very lovely hotel and delicious dinner at The Duck Club. We even treated ourselves to spa treatments -- massage & facial. Due to the rainy weather we didn't make use of the pool and jacuzzi but they were quite enticing. The room was very spacious and comfortable bed. A nice treat only 30-minutes away. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful too!

Don't even want to spend an ounce of my time and energy writing a bad review. Not worth it. Gustavo and Roberta were horrible and the front desk at this hotel needs to not only learn manners, but what the word hospitality really means.
What a HUGE disappointment and for paying $250/night, I expected more. Shame on them for being so bad. -

Get a facial from Aurea Geen! Although I rarely stay at the Lafayette Park Hotel, I do have to say that the Spa is fantastic. Aura is the most knowledgeable, considerate and individualistic facailist I have ever met and trust me I have seen them all. After living in New York for 6 years and being scorched, irritated and basically damaged by inexperienced but not inexpensive salons, I was excited to return home to my favorite esthetician, Aurea.
From the moment you arrive, she greets you with her warm charismatic glow. She makes you so snug and comfortable, her table is like a baby's craddle. Each facial is specific to the needs of that individual. Her products and sense of humor are both top notch. And her facial/head/shoulder massages during the facial are unparrelled. Her waxes are precise and effortless. And her painstaking persistence and attention to detail lead to perfection.
She is both an amazing person and amazing at what she does. I've had facials at Bliss that don't even compare. -

This review is for the spa ONLY!
I took advantage of the mid week special, $95 for any 50 minute service and $135 for any 80 minute service.
When I called and very friendly woman answered the phone and I asked if the price for the mid week services applied to the hot stone massage. I was elated when she said YES!!!
I booked a time to come in to have a 50 minute facial and a 80 minute hot stone massage. I was so excited and could hardly wait.
When I arrived I self parked my car in the garage and followed the signs (which were not very noticeable) to spa.
If you are going to the spa you will have to walk through the halls of the third floor and through the door that leads outside. You will walk past the pool area which is pretty small.
When I entered the spa area I was greeted by a lovely woman with an accent (sorry I can't remember her name at this time). I looked around the area and got a little skeptical because it was very small.
I was led into the women's locker room which was also pretty small but very clean and had very vibrant colors of the tropics.
I was given a key to a locker and was told that a robe and slippers were already placed in the locker. I opened the locker and there was a comfortable robe and slippers that kind of remind me of the jelly sandals women wore in the 80's.
Anyway I changed into the robe and went into the relaxation room where there was cucumber infused water, tea, fresh fruit (which was very yummy), magazines, music playing and a very nice older man who was also a patron.
He was very nice but I was a little uncomfortable sitting in a room with a man wearing nothing but a robe a slippers.
I was scheduled for my facial with Stephanie first. This was the best facial EVER!!!!! Stephanie is the reason why this place gets 5 stars!
Stephanie explained everything she was doing while not being to talkative and disrupting my relaxation. She massaged my neck, shoulders, arms, hands and scalp. It was FANTASTIC! Worth every penny and I felt like I didn't really need a massage. Of course I was not going to cancel my massage.
Next I had my 80 minute hot stone massage with Danielle. It was good but not the best I've had. It seemed as though she used a lot of time taking the stones in and out of the bags and the warmer and she also did not utilize them as much as I would have liked.
I will go back and have another facial with Stephanie. I was very relaxed and my skin looked great. I also liked how they told me what was being used on my face but did not try to force me to buy any skin care products.
Overall it was one the best Wednesday's EVER!!! Thank you hubby! -

For a hotel charging 5 star prices, they should at least attempt 5 star service. The front desk attendant was neither poised nor helpful when we were checking in. It was as if we were inconveniencing her by checking in, making no lofty demands at all.
The spa experience is what I'll focus on though, since it felt the most short in our 2 day stay. The actual spa manager is a tall (Swedish?) woman who raved about their services and even told me, "Do you like strong massage? I have someone for you." Unfortunately what I received was not the customized massage I had booked ($120 an hour) but instead a professional lotion application from a woman so nervous and fumbly in the massage, it didn't inspire confidence from the get go. But then after I told her where to focus her attention she simply glazed up my body with lotion and didn't pay any special attention to my specified areas.
There is nothing worse than hoping the hour will go by quicker so you can get out of the bed and wash the gallons of lube off your body. When the hour was finally up, she didn't bother to ask how it was. She didn't care.
When speaking the receptionist- I was basically told I was wrong- but also she wasn't the best massuse they have! In short, I was merely given a 50% discount, so I still had to pay for the service as feeble as it was. After going back and forth with the receptionist pleading my case for why it wasn't up to the standards they are charging, she finally relented and apologized. The entire experience humilliating and the antithesis of relaxing.
Final notes:
$10 a day for self park?! WTF
This is a hotel that nickles and dimes you for everything- beware! -

My friend and I decided to stay at the Lafayette Park Hotel and Spa, when seeing a Awesome Deal on http://Livingsocial.com. The Hotel is very nice and clean, and the service was pretty good. The pool, and hot tub were amazing.
The only things is they charge for EVERYTHING. They dont have vending machines at this hotel. If you want a soda at 12 midnight, you would have to get it out of your mini bar. They charge you $10 a night for self parking, they charge your $10 a day for Internet. So that was a downfall.
Overall it was a good visit, and I would stay here again.Comment from Tony E. of Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa 8/23/2011

Have definitely stayed in better places. Classic, (oddly) French-inspired decor, with a huge indoor courtyard that is used for I don't know what. I did really love the elevator (sooooo vintage!), though.
My friend and I stayed here for one night on business. Pretty much your (stereo)typical high-end hotel. I later referred to it to friends as the charge-you-for-everything hotel.
Bottle of water: $4. Internet service: $10. I'm surprised they didn't charge us to watch TV and use the toiletries in the bathroom. Oh yeah, while I was taking a shower, the bathtub filler (faucet, that is) shot out at me. Sort of. It did come off and shot out a bit due to the water pressure, but it didn't injure me or anything. Just saying. Might be kind of a liability somewhere down the line...
Oh yes, our greeting consisted of being told we didn't have a reservation (when we did!) and that we would be charged the standard rate. Our Travelocity print-out proved otherwise, yet we were still charged the standard night rate and would have to resolve the issue in the morning. Morning staff was much better and took care of everything fine.
Sure it's pretty and all, but not all that practical for our needs (it was 2 a.m. and we needed to get a hotel for the night... sue us!)Comment from Tony E. of Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa 4/11/2011

I arranged a group stay at this hotel. The arrangements were easy to make...most communication was done through email. The stay at the hotel was not the best though. The hotel itself is off of a really busy street. Great location to restaurants and stores. It is an older hotel and shows signs of age. I love that they serve coffee in the lobby every morning. They also have the option of having coffee brought to your room for $5. They were accommodating with a pack n play for my baby. They promised me a microwave, twice, but it never showed. Overall, my stay was okay with a couple of bumps. There were others in my group who had a good stay and others who had a horrible stay (one was given a room that had already been occupied). I had high expections from this hotel and it fell short.

This review is partly about Sniqueaway and partly about the hotel.
I was a little nervous about using Sniqueaway to book my hotel. I had seen some good and not so good things and no one had actually used the service. Yes, I found reviews, but those reviews were all being recommended by members of BzzAgent or something like that. I am totally, completely unaffiliated with anything or anyone. Just your average traveler. So booked, was nervous about add on fees, what if there was no room.
Purchasing on Sniqueaway was a breeze. Little confusion regarding when I would get my confirmation number. YOU NEED THE CONFIRMATION NUMBER. One part of the website said two weeks after close of sale, another part said 3 business days. Well, I got it in about 3 or 4 business days, couple of days before I was scheduled to leave.
Drove up to SF area. Was hoping to show check-in my confirmation on my Android, but unfortunately for some reason the phone was not charging on the way up and it died on me. Bleh. But not to fear, I had gone old school and printed out my e-mail confirmation. I had to handwrite in the confirmation number bec. the actual number itself was in red and would not print.
When we got to hotel, checked in. Check-in person asked for a gift certificate or something. I'm like, I don't have a gift certificate, but I handed him all my printed out material. He looked through everything, which I thought was a little odd. But then he gave us our rooms keys. The hotel wanted a card for incidentals, $100/day. But released when we left and if we charged nothing to the room.
Got to the room. Very nice room. Very spacious. The beds were nice. The canopy thing was eh. But the room itself was very nice. We did not have view.
The hotel pool was nice and heated. So although the weather was kind of cool, we were able to use the pool, which made my daughter very happy. If there is no pool at the hotel, forget it.
My husband was offended that one of the robes they had left in the room was kind of worn a little so he would not use it. Oh, well. Also no coffee pot in the room. My husband must have coffee in the morning. There was a $10/night parking fee. Eh. I think that could have been thrown in or maybe included. They don't even take down your license plate or anything. The wifi/Internet was $9.95 per 24-hour period. Now, my husband and I both have laptops, but the fee is not per room, but per laptop. So if I had also wanted to access the Internet using my laptop, then I would also be charged. Also, they have an in-room Internet cable. If you sign on for wifi, but think it's a little slow, then you try to use the cable, then you will get charged again. So be careful.
Those are the little things that kept it from getting five stars. Otherwise our stay was comfortable, convenient to SF, Oakland, and Berkeley.
El Charro is within walking distance, decent Mexican place. The Squirrel's Cafe was also close by. Decent, basic breakfast food.
So don't be afraid to use Sniqueaway to book your hotel. It's legit.Comment from Tony E. of Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa 6/6/2011

We attended a wedding held here and spent the night. The service was great, from the front desk, to housekeeping and of course the wedding reception and dinner staff. Throughout cocktail hour and the reception dinner, staff was very attentive. Because the hotel is small, it has an intimate feeling and the decor is french/provencial- esque and is reminiscent of a historical landmark although it was built in the 80s. The rooms were spacious enough, the bed was very comfortable and the bathrooms were nice. I usually lean towards more contemporary/modern hotels but this one was perfect for the wedding occasion we attended. Free parking was also a bonus. The hotel was also easily accessed from the freeway and close to downtown Lafayette.

Awesome hotel! Very classy and nice. The room on the 4th floor was large with vaulted ceilings, the bathroom smelled like serious mildew though....Only stayed one night, partied in Oakland for the night and was not far at all. Was a nice getaway. Very peaceful and both restaurants had good food. Staff was friendly and room was large and clean. Not a place for younger adults or whooping it up. From the gorgeous courtyard, to the classy ball room, elegant decor and luxurious rooms, the Lafayette Park Hotel oozes "special occasion" vibes.
My bf and I had the pleasure of attending a wedding here at the end of August. So we got to sample the customer service, room accommodations & amenities - here's the lowdown:
Customer Service - The front desk was irritating, and the girl that checked us in really could have cared less about us. No one was really that helpful, and our questions/requests seemed to be such a bother.
Room Accommodations - Outdated, but still very beautiful, spacious and comfortable. The bed was extremely cozy, and my 6'5 boyfriend could lay on the bed without his feet hanging off the end - typically beds don't fit him because of his height! The bathroom was large enough for two people to get ready side by side at the same time. Tons of counter, drawer and closet space too. There was also a couch/lounge area in our room.
Amenities/Hotel Grounds - The courtyard where the ceremony was held had a fountain in the center with beautiful stone walls and lush green vines with plants everywhere. Also, the elegant and spacious ballroom situated right next to the courtyard was a great spot for dinner and dancing. During my stay I also used the fitness center, and while it isn't large, it gets the job done... free weights, ellipticals, stationary bike and treadmill. Just the essentials. The pool area is small, and can get uncomfortable if it's too crowded. However it is a really pretty and relaxing pool if it's quiet and there aren't too many rowdy kids.
This hotel reminds me of a fairytale. Nothing about this hotel is modern, hip, or glamorous. It's just enchanting in a Cinderella storybook kind of way.Comment from Tony E. of Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa 10/15/2010

we had a B-day party dinner there tonight. The Hotel looks beautiful and it is clean and so on. The food was VERY mediocer and the service was horrible. Jason and Art the serversobvious didn't like their job or at least they had no plans to act like they did. We had to ask 3 times for different salad dressing, wine wasn't served at our table, nor the coffee. Used plates piles up on the table without clearing it properly. I am sure our host paid a lot of dollars for this event, too bad that all 10 people on our table were complaining about the service.

We went to check out his hotel thinking we might stay there the night after our wedding, and then leave for the airport the next morning. We looked at two suites. The first room was facing the cemetery that is next door to the hotel! No joke- It was so creepy. I assumed the next room would be better, but it was even worse. It was a large room with random steps in it, green carpet, and old 80's oak furniture. I was really surprised that the rooms were so dated because the hotel/lobby/courtyard are so beautiful and the Duck Club restaurant is quite fancy (with great food as well).
So, in other words, make sure you preview the rooms at this hotel before your booking so you can get exactly what you are looking for on that special night!!Comment from Tony E. of Lafayette Park Hotel & Spa 9/16/2010

If you're planning to have an event here (i.e. wedding), plan on people being rude to you at worst and at best ignored. That is unless you're willing to spend a lot of money and buy everything they offer - ceremony + reception + hotel rooms, spa packages, etc.
I contacted Becky the catering manager telling her that I wanted to have my ceremony there and also stay there the weekend with my other guests. (We only wanted to have the reception at a nearby restaurant because a friend of mine is the manager and had offered her restaurant to me.)
An email back told me that I could have the small "wishing well" courtyard for 30 minutes, and 30 minutes only (rush in, quick ceremony, rush out).
??
I called and spoke to Kim who told me that unless I was doing the whole wedding and reception package that was all I could get. I had more questions and Kim assured me that Becky would be getting back to me so I could make an appointment with her to see the courtyard.
2 days later nothing from Becky. I called her and she vaguely remembered me and could not give me a definite time that she could meet me and rushed me off the phone. I emailed her and gave her a specific date and time that I could meet her and she emailed me back confirming the appointment.
Day of the appointment we're left waiting in the lobby for 20 minutes before Kim arrives apologizing because she does not know where Becky is and cannot get a hold of her. She doesn't even introduce herself to the other person with me (my MOM, ie the MONEY PERSON), just rushes us towards the elevators towards the upper courtyard. She was dismissive of our questions until we indicate that yes we do actually want to have a cocktail hour here after the ceremony. Suddenly things slow down and she has time for us.
She brings us back to the office and here's the topper. Becky is IN THE OFFICE, she walks up to me and introduces herself. I say "Hi, yes, you had made an appointment with me today." She says "I did? Oh yeah." and TURNS AROUND AND WALKS AWAY.
After that there was no way these people were getting my business. But I guess they preferred it that way since I wasn't a millionaire spending millions. -

If I could leave 0 stars I would. I absolutly DESPISE this place!!! Not only are they rude on the phone time & time again (believe me, I dreaded calling every unnecessary time), but this place has so many hidden fees. First example: When booking I asked for an upgraded room, and what the cost would be. The rude lady told me $10. I was shocked at how low the cost was so I upgraded all 3 nights. Little did I know all the hidden fees an tax and tax on top of other made up taxes made it well beyond her $10 upgrade. OUTRAGEOUS!!!
Second example: When ordering room service or any service I always tip 20%. Little did I know that I was leaving the person a 20% tip but also secretly being charged another 20% automatically. I paid way more for tips and service charges than I did for my actual meal. 40% tip and a service charge, what a hustle!!!
Third example: When checking out beware of all the ass pillaging charges. And dont even bother contacting them, they forward your to their accounting dept who speaks very little english!!!
Do yourself a favor and never stay here unless your are in the mood to get ripped off! -

Got a room for $140 / night.
The hotel was nice, had a nice ambiance and wasn't ostentiously decorated.
+ nice, spacrious room on the 4th floor with vaulted ceilings
+ 24 fitness room
+ heated pool
- $10 / night for parking
- room took a while to heat up because of the vaulted ceilings
- jacuzzi only had lukewarm water
- small fitness center
I didn't go to the spa or the restaurant so I can't rate those. -

Gayle and I booked a room at the Lafayette Park Hotel for our Wedding Night. It's a gorgeous hotel and I thought that our room (with a not so romantic view of Highway 24 and the hills) was very nice. It was more like a suite and featured high ceilings and all sorts of room, comfort, and relaxation. I also enjoyed the sweeping central stairway that accents the Lobby of which coffee was available the next morning at the bottom.
My only complaint (again) is the service. I tried to get early check-in for the time between the Wedding Ceremony and the the Reception. I explained our situation and the staff person on the phone was perhaps a bit too "German" - efficient and somewhat cold. I was advised that the hotel wasn't full that night, but the best she could do was a explanatory note on the computer. After that conversation, Gayle and I decided to take a more direct route to our reception. This service model extended to the front desk staff. At one point, she interrupted a couple (getting married here the next day) who were congratulating us, because she immediately needed our credit card.
As for the wedding night....With all the ceremony- and reception-related activities, lots of fun conversation, and making sure that our in-town and out-of-town guests were taken care of, we were both exhausted by the time we arrived. And after 5+ years together, sometimes a great cuddle and a good night's sleep is all you need.Listed in: Wedding Venues

My husband and I had a very romantic time at Lafayette Park. Upon arrival there was wine.
After checking in, I went to get a massage at the Spa. The spa staff were very pleasant and the entire environment helped me relax and feel better. Had a nice relaxing massage and felt rejuvenated.
Love the pool area. The spa is on the right side and the gym is on the left of the pool area. Nice fireplace by the pool to sit and sip wine at night. Very romantic yet restful place.
The room was exactly as described on the website. Loved the fireplace in front of the bed and the elegant decor. I would describe the decor as French Country.
This was one of my favorite weekend getaways. I will definitely be back again.
Highly recommend -

Nested off Highway 24, this place is a great place for formal events. I have photographed two weddings here, one in the main courtyard, and one in the top courtyard.
I can't say much about the experience in staying here, but in terms of the imagery that can be captured, this place looks larger than what it is.
The parking garage is to the right of the hotel, under the building. Watch out for the angle, if you have a low bumper, it's best to approach this a bit to the side.
Typically, photographers are treated as vendors and get a box lunch style dinner. In both my experience here, I was treated like a guest and was given the same dish as the wedding guest. This was not a request I made to my bride and groom, but it does beat the stuff you can get (cough* some hot sandwich). I was also able to eat in a side meeting room, set up with dinner set, napkin, water, utensils. This was great! I like it when places take care of its vendors. -

This review strives to be useful, but there's not a bit of funny or cool in it. Sorry about that, my funny and cool juices are just not flowing today.
THE HOTEL
***1/2
The hotel is lovely, and there is a relaxing outdoor courtyard in the center of the hotel with a fountain and shaded tables and chairs. The staff was very pleasant and helpful.
The room is very nice, but I had to remove a half star for not having in room hair dryer and coffee pot. They do offer morning room service coffee for $5 a person. The showers have good heat, water pressure and the wide shower head I love. The bed was very, very comfortable. The mini bar only had one of each of four types of beers for $5 each, which I though was a little odd.
THE BAR
****
Very friendly service, even though they close at 1am and we arrived just at last call. The drinks are generous and well made. The seating is comfortable and the tables are not too close together, so it feels intimate. They allowed us to bring back a couple of beers to drink in our room or the courtyard.
THE BRUNCH
****
It starts with coffee or tea and your choice of champagne, sparkling cider or fresh squeezed juice. Then you head to the cold appetizer buffet, loaded with delicious seafood, salads (including a wonderful sesame noodle), cheeses, fruit. Nearly everything we tried here was above average.
You have a choice of 5 entrees, ranging from gourmet to traditional. We both tried the eggs benedict. As the server checked back with us shortly after they were delivered, he noticed that my husband's poached eggs were slightly overcooked and offered to replace it... no prompting from us. He was extremely knowledgeable and courteous. We both enjoyed our entrees.
Then there is a dessert buffet, with all house made pastries and desserts. We only had room to try a little, but the raspberry mousse and creme brulee were exquisite, really. Save room.
The brunch is served at a leisurely pace, so make sure to allow time for it.
Sunday Brunch comes with some room packages, or is $39/person. (Kid prices available)
Did not try the pool or the spa.Listed in: Bay Area weekend getaway…

I didn't sleep here or anything. I just went to an event here. It was pricey to attend the networking event. I'm assuming from that if you want to rent a room out here for something be prepared to charge the attendees some $.
The hotel is beautiful. I'm not a big fan of French History or art but the place is full of it. They have an antique clock behind the registration area that is probably priceless.
There is a garden terrace in the center with a fountain that is very picturesque.
The food that was served at our event could have been better. It was Steak with Asparagus and Mashed Potatoes. They also had a Vegetarian Risotto which I wished I had known I had the choice because I don't like eating steak late.
The Steak at most of the settings at my table was raw and they were unable to cut it. Mine was fine I just couldn't eat all of it. I asked for a box to take the majority of my steak home to my husband and they said they didn't have anything like that. Yet, at the end I looked over at another table and someone had their steak put in a box to go. I was pissed. For $55 bucks for an event I want my steak!
Its beautiful there I must admit. They also have Valet Parking that you don't necessarily have to use there is a parking garage that I didn't know was there before.
I think I would get a room here just to see how the sleeping arrangements are.Listed in: Event Spaces

I had a lovely day of pampering and relaxing with my friend Suzy at the spa here. We opted for the 1/2 day spa package which included a facial, body exfoliation, massage and lunch.
The spa is small, but nice. When you get services here, you are also given access to the fitness room, pool, jacuzzi and sauna. The locker room has 2 toilets (see my Nordstrom spa review for this one) and one shower, several lockers and all the Q-tips, cotton balls, and other bathroom needs you could need after your treatments.
My facial was lovely. Lots of creams and such slathered on and very little extractions. The massage was good-not the best I have had, but a nice one and lastly, the body salt scrub, which honestly I could have skipped. I can do the same thing to myself in the shower with stuff I get at Trader Joe's, but it was nice to have someone do it for me on my back (the man will but it is not as relaxing standing up).
The lunch was our choice of menu offerings from The Bistro restaurant and was served poolside like room service. Cloth napkins and those cute little Barbie sized Tabasco sauce bottles. Lunch in itself was only worth 2.5 stars, but considering where we were, I decided I ordered wrong.
The staff is incredibly friendly. I will definitely come back and someday would like to dine at the Duck Club. -

Kudos to Jan Douglas and her awesome staff and support team for being able to accomodate a wedding of 80 people on 2 days notice!!!!
I am a professional event planner and one of the elements of this job is to know who you can count on to find what you need when you need it in a pinch. I was contracted to plan a wedding for a client and she had previously chosen a location near her home, which she thought that would really accentuate her 1920's style of wedding.
She had been scheduled to hold her wedding at an old Victorian style club and due to poor management on their part, they had neglected to give her an estimate including food until one week before the wedding. But due to misunderstandings on both parts, the club president grossly offended her and her fiance.
The couple called me Tuesday and said they were considering changing the venue. We decided to talk about it again in the morning but I told them I'd see what I can do. I called the Lafayette Park Hotel when I found nothing suitable in the Berkeley/Oakland area, and having worked there, I knew they had impeccable service, and that if they had space, it would be beautiful.
I spoke to Felicia and within the hour, we were walking around the hotel looking at the space. By 8pm, the couple had come in, toured the place, and signed the papers and paid the entire bill.
I tried to find something that would evoke the spirit of what she wanted to capture, and even though we did not have as much space as we would have liked, we were able to accomodate the ceremony, a string trio, a pianist, and a bar on the patio courtyard, and then 9 tables, a 7 piece band, 3 casino tables, and a chocolate fountain in the ballroom, which was all in black and white:
black damask over white tablecloths, sheer white voile with black sashes on the chairs, the centerpieces are silver candelabras turned into plant stands of varying heights on each table with cascading white flower bouquets standing on round mirrors, little votives around the table, silver ball chargers and white plates with a thin silver band, and all of the glassware had a silvery etching accross the top. The napkin was pulled through a little pearl napkin ring across the plate.
And the physical beauty of the LPH is the architecture to resemble a French chateau, with a beautiful brick courtyard and stately fountain, well maintained plants and vines, everything polished and spotless, wrought iron furniture around all of the outdoor areas, the antiques throughout the hotel; it all shows love and commitment to the guest.
Jan, who is the director of catering and sales, and I worked out the details of the food and the placement of everything, and the entire evening went magically, including Abraham's quick staff in bringing an extra table to accomodate the unexpected guests who showed up.
If you want the absolute best service, and want the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they will do everything possible to make sure that your event is perfect, this is the place to go. -

Remember when you got your drivers permit and your parents went out of town? Awehaa, well maybe it was just me, but right before my brother locked me out of the garage and ruined the rest of my sophomore year of high school, the driving without supervision went phenomenally. Luckily no one got hurt and I almost made it into the garage until it was locked from the inside and I couldn't get the family sadan back in it's spot before my parents got home. Hmmm... besides the inevitable grounding and chores I incurred, the memories might just be worth it.
Growing up in Lafayette there was no need to rent a hotel room (nor was there anything to do) at this lovely hotel, but there was reason to utilize the spa and pool. I picked up a couple of my lady friends and we went straight to the hotel's pool. It became our secret hang out for that summer. We always seemed to be the only ones there and it was like our own private pool.
Now in my later years, it has become a place I like to visit for it's spa treatments and Sunday Brunches at the Duck Club. And the occasional bar scene at the Duck Club.
I've been to many events here from weddings to birthday parties in the lavish courtyard and ballrooms inside, all very beautiful and great service. The hotels all around accommodations are simple yet elegant.
So, from my first memories to now, the Lafayette Park has always been number one in my book. From sneaking into the pool to now, paying for the relaxing Spa, I've come a long way, but the good old Park is always the same.
