I think most of the posts here say it already, but the orange sauce makes the food. Otherwise, the food here is pretty bland, and doesn't compare to food you get at other taqueria's in the san jose area. I will caveat this by saying the watermelon juice and nachos are pretty darn good!
I have to admit I've been really spoiled, having eaten amazing mexican food in Tucson, AZ, Los Angeles, and in Mexico. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything that has blown me away in the Bay Area. Maybe Yelp can help with that...
Overrated!
Not the best tacos I've had. The carne asada was a bit too salty. The choriso and lengua were just average. And I'm still trying to figure out what the big hype is with their orange sauce.
Other minuses include paying for fountain soda refills and shorter hours of operation (than their downtown location).
The pluses? Cleanliness comes to mind, as well as those huge doors that open up to the patio.
Beware the Refill Police
OK so I'm soda addicted again. Yikes...
I can understand you not wanting roving gangs of kids coming in and sucking down refill after refill of soda. Sure, I can understand that, but when you have a 36 year old man, with a little grey pepper in his hair, who's already tossed $2 in your tipjar, who's already ordered a chips and salsa with his burrito, sitting all by himself I think you can cut a little slack here.
So I was munching away on my Carne Asada. I had seen the sign ($0.60 for Refills) many times. I decided to just get a refill. Hell, I saw one guy with a water cup help himself to soda.
"THAT REFILL IS SIXTY CENTS" the lady told me. Not the one that looks like a teenager, but the other one.
"Hang on let me get tha." I think reaching into my pocket for the money was an unexpected reaction. She rushed off. I laid a dollar on the table. I left my mess, and the dollar when I left. I didn't even bother bussing my own table.

I've quit drinking soda since then. I've had numerous bad experiences at burrito factory across the… Read more »
This place is disgustingly PATHETIC! They would nickel-and-dime their customers TO DEATH!
I ordered a vegetarian burrito once and when they screwed it up (by adding onions even when I EMPHASIZED not to have it in my burrito) I had asked for them to fix the burrito. They ended up CHARGING me for their mistake!!! They charged me for a whole new burrito!!!
Earlier tonight my friend and I ordered a burrito and they forgot the sour cream. When we went to ask for some, the girl's response was, "That will be 70 cents." When we said, "uhhh...you guys forgot to put the sour cream in the burrito...and it's one of the LISTED ingredients on your menu." And the girl's response to that was, "There's nothing I can do...you should have brought the burrito up right away. Anyway, that would be 70 cents." WE WALKED OUT AND PROMISED NEVER TO COME BACK HERE AGAIN!
FYI: they put up a sign on their fountain drink machine "60 cents for refill".
I have many a fond memory (hazy though they may be) of youthful drunken escapades ending with late-night food orgies at one on La Vic's two downtown locations. When I heard that they were opening a location near my house, I was very excited. I've been to the Almaden location a couple of times over the last year, and unfortunately my nostalgia for this establishment will far outlive my present desire to eat here again.
The orange sauce still rocks, which is a good thing since you will need a lot of it to smother out the mediocrity of the food. The carne asada burritos are bland and gristly. The quesadillas are good, but overpriced. They charge you extra for chips, and then eyeball you like a thief if you take a bottle of orange sauce over to your table. My biggest complain is the fact that both times I ate here I had to wait nearly 30 minutes for my food to arrive, despite the fact that the place wasn't even that busy. This isn't fine dining, and it shouldn't take a half hour to wrap a burrito.
Maybe La Vic's is not what it used to be, maybe it was just better when I used to have a 6 pack in my belly, and maybe this location is simply inferior to the others. Whatever the case may be, I do not plan on eating here again anytime soon.
I given up on La Vics. Yeah, its delicious when I'm blown and drunk as hell, but how about when i'm SOBER?!
I ate here on two separate occasions when i was sober and the food was disgusting. the nachos topped with carnitas tasted like burnt pork, and the chicken burrito wasn't very SUPER. if anything it was SUPER DRY! i'm still a fan of the carne asada quesadillas, but come on now..its deep fried and dunked in sour cream..it has to taste good.
The orange sauce makes it taste alot better, but the food should be able to speak for itself!
Oh yeah, if you come here at night..they have this douche bag security guard who works there. My friend was sitting in one of the booths with his feet up on the seat, and the guard literally came over and told him to sit correctly. He's hella mean, and you can tell not very happy with his life! But then again, if I had his job i would be bitter too! Lol

I always have a great experience with la vics!!! So i went back to the bay to visit some family and of course I made La Vics one of my stops since now they have this location right down the street from my house!!!
Great parking! Everything is CLEAN!!! And their quesadillas seem different to me this time but it was still good! They definitely make the tortillas crispier!
Love love LOVE the orange sauce! Always good!
I don't get it. So many better, cheaper taqueria in the area...
The orange sauce, while tasty, does now make up for the crappy portions, dried up meat and rice filled burritos.
Don't get me started on the nacho cheese from the costco gallon-sized cans.
TWO WORDS: Orange Sauce!!!!!!
My first experience with La Vic's was in downtown San Jose after a hardcore night of clubbing (as most usual customers of La Vic's). I ordered the carne asada burrito and was about to take a bite, when my friend freaked out and shoved a bottle of the signature La Vic's spicy orange sauce. The sauce MADE the burrito. Unfortunately I have to say the food at this place is really nothing special without the orange sauce.
I am so in love with this sauce that EVERY time I go to La Vic's whether it be the restaurant or smaller location in downtown San Jose I ALWAYS buy a bottle for $6. The sauce goes with everything from baby carrot sticks to hard boiled eggs!
The restaurant versus the downtown location is fantastic if you want to be able to have a meal with actual conversation. I think the coolest feature of this restaurant is the front folding doors that open out to the patio and sometimes they even have live music playing when it's warm outside on a weekend. Loverly!
Make sure you try the orange sauce, the delicious horchata, and the quesadilla. You can never go wrong with that combination!
After enjoying my burrito at the downtown location in crappy SJ-my hometown in case someone gets offended :), I went to this location and had the same super burrito with al pastor. It was pretty filling and tasty in my book. Made me drop the fattest shit after eating my burrito but it was a good shit. Came out nice and easy with minimal smell. :)
Orange Sauce is over-rated. The meat is always dry, EVERY time I order the super burrito, it has tons of rice, a little meat, beans and where the F is the Sour Cream, Guac and Pica De Gayo? I paid for it, I want it!
There is no sense in going to a Taqueria that rips you off and only has sauce as its staple. The Quesodilla's are gross too. I had oil leaking out of the tortilla, so nasty. It didn't taste good.
I am not a picky eater, but come on, guys, give me what I pay for!!!!
This place sucks! I mean if you can't drench your food in their orange sauce, you aren't gonna like it! They are really over priced too. I bought a soda and then paid for a refill. I sat down and started eating my food when one of their employees walked over to tell me I needed to pay for the refill! I told her I had already paid. She just walked away. I was so angry! WTF? Seriously if I paid for the freakin expensive food, do you really think I wasn't going to pay for the refill. I wouldn't have needed it if it wasn't because I felt like I was washing the food out of my mouth!
After a long night of cavorting with my buds, I was very excited to try the famed super burrito and infamous orange sauce at La Vic's. To get to the holy land of dubious orange colored sauce, we drove through the streets of San Jo, yelling "yes please" to whomever we passed. We parked in a godforsaken taqueria whose owner and rent-a-cop threatened to tow us if we ended up going to La Vic's. A-hole...we bought a drink from u guys dammit! Then I proceeded to drive the wrong way down a street, pulled a U-y, and parked right in front of La Victoria.
At La Victoria's, there were all shapes and sizes of San Ho shorts-up-your-butt-crack-skanks and shorts-under-your-butt-cheeks-K-Fedwannabees. Anyways, you know how I like that charm. I like a colorful crowd when I eat my colorful orange burritto.
So we sat down and proceeded to pull up a chair for our group of 5. No go. The rent-a-cop admonished us sternly and would not let us seat five people in a four person table. A-hole. So I proceeded to share a seat with my date. That was not so bad.
Then the food came. I was expecting a thick, meaty, juicy, wrap my mouth around it goodness. What I got was a limp, gummy, gunky mess. The orange sauce was a tad spicy, which was nice, but it tasted like mayo. I hate mayo. Hate.
I tried to squeeze the orange sauce onto my burrito. It got a little stuck, and then it came out all at once into a lumpy mess.
"Oops, it just squirted out!"
"That's what he said"
So coming from LA i know alot of good taco places. My boyfriends best buds took us here after a night out in downtown san jose. I ordered the super nachos (or whatever its called) and Glenn got carne asada tacos with like giant piles of stuff on them. Is that a super taco?
I was pretty drunk so this kind of food was great! My mexican buddy said the tacos were ok. I think I was looking for a more taco truck kinda taco with meat onions and cilantro. That orange sauce everyones taking about was pretty good too but it was hard to really taste it through all the shit on the nachos. I think when I go back up North ill try the simple stuff on the menu.
Id rather stay in LA and go to Albertitas...
As with all the other comments, the orange sauce indeed makes the food.
I think this is a great place to go after the bar but without a few drinks the food is just eh?! I'd rather be at taqueria eduardos...
Super-friendly employees greeted me during my first visit to La Vics recently. Having read about the orange hot sauce on yelp, I was eager to give this place a try. Picked up a super flour quesadilla with chicken and carne asade super burrito. They threw in 4 orange sauces.
The burrito was alright, the quesadilla even better. But what's up with the orange sauce? Do I need to be drunk to like this stuff? Not good at all, and the food was much better without.
I had La Vic's for the first time recently and it lived up to my high expectations of food quality, but not for service.
My husband and I make a point to be kind to those serving us, but the La Vic employee who took our order was only interested in what we wanted and taking payment. She didn't acknowledge us as we came up nor when we thanked her. I was also appalled to see that refills on the almost $2 soda were 60 cents despite the soda fountain being on the outside of the counter. Taunting.
I ordered the Super Burrito, supposedly including sour cream and guacamole. As I ate the burrito, I never came across anything close to sour cream or guacamole. Though the burrito was deliciously juicy and filled with chicken and beans, I don't think I recieved what I ordered.
Others Yelpers are correct on some things: the eating area is very clean, the food is good, and it's a great place to eat late at night.
My tastebuds are officially satisfied. I was really craving a breakfast burrito but I was so intrigued by everyones review about the oh so famous orange sauce. I got a carne asada super burrito with an order of chips and salsa. The total was 7.05 so cheap. The burrito was the perfect size and I don't think even needed the orange sauce but I poured that on every bite anyway. The salsa sauce was a little spicy which is good. The staff was really nice too. A lot of people talk about eating at the other location after the club which I would totally be down for. I will take my boyfriend next time cuz he kept taking bites from my takeout.
"Meh. I've experienced better" is really all that's needed. But since Yelp provides this cute little text box to put words into, I'll just go with it.
Food's whatever. I guess since they get a bunch of drunkies that come over from next door, it's good enough. But I've had it sober (down the street from my place) and it's really kinda weird. The chicken especially. Orange sauce is good, but that can only carry a place so far.
Staff is kinda rudesville, but...then they gotta deal with the douches that come over from The Brit next door. So I can't really blame them. Or maybe I'm a douche. It's a mystery.
I hate this place. To me I only considered it a place where drunk people come to eat after the bars and clubs. Even wasted, I can tell that the food here tasted so bad. Basically I would never go here sober to eat.
However, that changed because a friend recommended me the super taco. Now I maybe come here sober to eat that. So I'm a fan to the super taco not the whole place itself.
****All I have to say is OOOOOOOOOOOOOo sauce!!*****
Get it, try it, use it, buy it (or sneakily take a bottle from the store, I'm not encouraging it just saying it's possible haha )
bomb A$$ burritos that are huge, very filling, tasty and CHEAP. $6 for a super burrito with all the fixins, trust me you can't go wrong with this place.
4 stars since they are so stingy with their O sauce, only giving you 1 tiny container with ToGo orders and could be a little quicker.
Orange sauce I love you! I always get their steak quesadilla. This place is my cure for midnight cravings!
The orange sauce was as good as my buddies said it would be ! Creamy, mildly spicy, with a subtle hint of cilantro and garlic.
I had the carnitas burrito and unfortunately it was way to dry, and not loaded up with enough extras. Without the sauce, I would have given this place a C-- . If I try something amazing next time, I may increase my rating to 4 stars, we will wait and see...
I love this location. I haven't been going to the downtown locations as often because parking is terrible and the location right next to SJSU is always packed & doesn't have enough tables. The decor here is very nice with plenty of seating. As for the food, everyone knows it's average, but the orange sauce makes it awesome. You can even buy a bottle to take home.
Clean, modern interior; ho-hum taqueria fare; extremely impatient and resentful staff.
I love the clean orange walls and tiled seats in this location. They've tried hard to make the restaurant look upscale, hiding away the silverware and sauces to make the atmosphere more pristine. But watch out when you ask the staff for more salsa, orange sauce, or silverware: they'll snap if you ask them more than once during your meal. Not to mention how angry the cashier seemed when I changed my order from carne asada to a chicken burrito.
The orange sauce was tasty but only because I had to keep slathering it on my burrito to keep the dry grilled chicken from getting stuck in my throat. I actually liked their fresh, cilantro-full salsa more than the orange sauce, but I'm just a sucker for salsa. On the upper hand, my friend's toasty quesadilla looked delicious. Maybe I'll order that next time, if there is a next time.
Totally flipping back and forth between a 2 or 3 star...so for now I will give it a 2.5 probably because I won't be back.
I was in the area and was craving some taqueria food. One of my Yelp friends had been here before and didn't have a great experience so I had that in the back of my mind when I came here but I was starving!
I tried a pollo taco and a carne asada taco. $2.25 for a soda?! No thanks! My tacos came to over $6 which I thought was a bit pricey for a taqueria. The lady gave me their famous orange sauce as well. I sat down and took a bite. Pollo was very dry and not very flavorful so I gave it a squirt of the orange sauce. The orange sauce is good (Garlicy like I like it!) but the flavor is so overpowering that it lingered in my mouth for hours so all I tasted was this sauce every time I took a bite of my food. Carne Asada was better then the pollo but as far as flavors, all I could taste was the orange sauce.
Decor is super nice here...that was a surprise and its super clean. I like the long bench made of a pretty tiles. It's nice and cool on hot days like this. Service is friendly too.
And you can't miss their tacky "60 cents for refills" sign made from a piece of paper and black ink pen taped onto the soda machine. That turned me off....soda is NOT that expensive and it certainly not worth 60 cents for a refill. If I am going to pay $2.25 for a large soda, I think free refills should be okay.
Food is okay...service is nice....I have definitely experienced better at my favorite taco trucks in East San Jose then here. I probably wouldn't make the effort to come back even though its close to home for me.
I am a burrito guy... This isn't a burrito spot... I have had both the asada super burrito and the pollo super burrito, and both were not great in different ways. The asada burrito was SUPER salty, and the pollo burrito was surprisingly greasy.
Orange sauce?!!? Really? If I wanted to soak my food in grease I could just put it under the drip pan on the grill...
The only 2 reasons I am giving them 3 stars. The first is speediness. Even with 10 people ahead of you, your food doesn't take more than 10 min to be in front of you. The second, are the super tacos. Even though they are a bit steep, they are super good. I don't have much to complain about there, but I am still a burrito guy... So a super taco can only tide me over till the next burrito...
Like the Burritos OK. Love the super taco and super quesadilla. Personally, like to mix or alternate the orange sauce with the green sauce. Lots of both is good.
This location is newer and more spacious than the other two, which is a nice plus.
When my co-workers and I first found out this location opened, we came here 3 times that week!
This is definitely one of the nicer La Vic locations. It's very clean and bright and it gets pretty busy if you don't come early to beat the lunch crowd.
I love their quesadillas and of course their famous orange sauce! It's the first thing that comes to my mind whenever anyone mentions La Vic.
This place has some of the worst customer service I've ever had.
My wife and I love Mexican food and frequent different taquerias around Almaden Valley and have never met such a rude and borderline disrespectful group of employees until tonight.
As we were in the middle of eating dinner making casual conversation one of the employees walked up to our table and grabbed one of the salsa bottles from my wife. All she said was, "only one bottle per table" and walked off without further explanation for her behavior. I never would have experienced this sort of service anywhere else and am aghast that someone would have the audacity to take away a condement from a paying customer! Where do they get off?
Definitely not the best taqueria I've been to, but I give it extra points for being close to my house. My carnitas burrito was a little dry and not as flavorful compared to my experience at Las Vegas Taqueria in Milpitas. The orange sauce was good, but with all the hype I was expecting a little more. The place is very clean and is actually pretty nice too.
I will be coming back here, mostly out of convenience cause the food is juts okay.
I'm glad that there is a La-vics outside of downtown San Jose, but this establishment's food quality is not up to par.
Positives:
Cleanest among the 3 La Vics
Orange sauce
If you have time, try Burrito Factory which is down the street from this establishment. There is also a Super Taquiera which includes avocados in their burritos which gives it that extra taste
Took my friends here after they heard me rave about the famous orange sauce. We all got a burrito of some sort. The chicken super burrito was juicy, but not in a good way. My carne asada super burrito was too dry and all our burritos were lacking in the salsa, guacamole, and sour cream departments. If it weren't for the orange sauce, I don't think I could have finished.
Skip the burrito and get the quesadilla or some tacos instead. The tortilla on the quesadilla is so perfectly flaky and the tacos are filled to the brim with goodness.
Summary: 3.5/5 stars rounded down
+Orange sauce
+Quesadillas

Man, La Vic brings back memories.. Just the smell of the orange sauce makes me want to scarf down a carne asada burrito and flake out on a study group, blame the food coma! Unfortunately the days when I could skip out on my responsibilities and blame it on a burrito are long gone but the good news is that La Vic is not!
The breakfast burritos at La Vic are also awesome, another excellent reason not to go to my morning classes. I usually stick to the ham, cheese, egg, and potato bfast burrito but sometimes, if i'm feeling up for braving the gastrointestinal storm, i'll have them throw some chorizo up in there. Yum.. but keep the pepto on stand by!
I've actually spent time trying to crack the code of the mysterious orange sauce, I've gotten close but it still just isnt as good as the mysterious orange hued goo that can only be found at one of my favorite taquerias.
I have been here countless times for a late night and I can remember some really good times here. Obviously, it's not the most authentic Mexican food you can get in San Jose but it's pretty good for some late night eating, not to mention the orange sauce is pretty bomb. I usually go for either the super veggie quesedilla or the supper veggie burrito which are pretty yummy and filling in my book.
I can understand why the staff only allow one bottle of orange sauce per table. I'm sure they're just trying not to hand out too many and risk having people steal them to take home--which my friends have tried and succeeded in doing. Hehe, sorry about that, La Vics.
The place is very clean and The food is very cheap...a great start.
When I arrived around 11:40 PM for a late night snack there were a few other customers, but I was surprised at how quiet and calm this was compared to the one downtown. It would be nice if it were open as late as the downtown locations, but this is still one of the few places open til midnight (on the weekends) in almaden.
I ordered a corn quesadilla and a carne asada taco. the quesadilla was pretty good- mostly because they fry the tortilla. The taco was loaded with meat- not questionable quality and tasty enough, but it was pretty damn salty. I don't think I'd ever bother coming here anytime before 9 PM
The first few times I went here I was drunk, when food always tastes good. I was a little nervous to go sober, in fear that it would completely ruin the love I had for La Vic. This place is awesome whatever your state of mind with or without the orange sauce, though I'm personally a huge fan.
The only turnoff for me is the huge gaping whole in the floor right behind the counter. You walk by it when you go to the bathroom. Sometimes the door is shut and that's always good, but a couple times I've almost gone in while turning the corner. It looks like an scene from The Goonies down there and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't enjoy falling in.
I don't know what happened last night but everything was so salty. Ordered two super quesadillas. INothing was wrong with my taste buds bc both my husband & I think that our food and the sauce was salty. First time ordering the horchata drink from here last night and it barely had any flavor. Tasted like it was watered down. I guess I am going to just stick with Mariscos La Costa on Monterey Road, where the food is cheap and authenic..
After a morning of shopping and weaving through the Jazz festival, we decided to head to La Vics! Good for those sobering up after drunken nights or those looking for a cheap meal. Most of my cousins ordered the supreme burrito, which is just alright. It's the awesome orange sauce & salsa verde that really make this place worthwhile. I ordered the carne asada quesadillas and it's just as good as I remember. Yum yum! Although not too friendly, service is fast. I'd rec' skipping the nachos.
I like the carnitas at La Vic, for Al Pastor I'd rather go to Adelita's Tacqueria on Leigh Avenue.
The orange sauce is yummy here.
The "Refills 60¢" sign pasted over the coca-cola logo on the soda machine is a MAJOR turn off... So cheap and cheesy. Not sure what they're trying to achieve with that one. The price they sell the first cup of soda for is outrageous as well, I think they missed the mark on the soda as a loss-leader Maybe they had students camp out and drink their soda well dry, who knows.
They open at like 8am on the days they are open... Breakfast Burritos aren't on the menu, but they have 'em... I've been there a couple of mornings for a breakfast burrito with bacon (and the yummy orange sauce)
