117 reviews for La Verdad
Review Highlights
Growing up in San Diego, I was spoiled with good mexican food. Now I find myself in Boston, going to Berklee, and craving good mexican food almost daily. I finally found the closest thing to home. La Verdad claims to be a "Tijuana style" mexican food taqueria. I can't say i completely agree, but they're a lot closer to it than any other mexican place in Boston. First off, everything is twice as much as it is back home. $9 for a torta?! I pay $3.40 at my favorite place back home. That being said, this place gets me through the four months at a time I spend in this city going to school before I go home and gorge myself on carnitas and carne asada.
The best part about this place is taco tuesdays. My friends and I have been going every tuesday this semester. It's a great deal for some great food. I recommend getting the carnitas.
The one thing they have have wrong that bugs me, is that they put rice and beans in all of their burritos. I don't know where this rule came from, but it's not true that in order for something to be called mexican, that it has to have rice and beans. I personally hate beans. So, when you order your next carnitas burrito here, ask for it without rice and beans, and instead have them throw in some guacamole. It's the closest thing you'll find to what I know to be mexican food, without traveling across the country.
As a vegetarian, I usually don't think to check the menu ahead of time for Mexican restaurants because they almost always have a good vegetarian selection...but not this place. I think there was one, maybe two entrees on the list that were veg friendly. Neither of which I was overly excited about. Anyway, I ordered the chili relleno tacos. They turned out to be decent, but nothing special.
The grilled corn was the highlight of my meal. Its adorned with mayo, spices, and cheese. Mmm.
The guac was flavorless; I was less than impressed. However, the salsa verde had a nice kick to it.
The margaritas were average. A bit too sweet for my liking. When I order a margarita, I really like to taste the tequila.
Save your money. Go to Anna's.
Sadly this review won't be very useful until the weather is nice again. Everytime I come here, I go for lunch on Tuesday for their $1 tacos. These are delicious tacos, small but very well made, your choice of chicken, carnitas, or al pastor. I'll admit, the flavors and ingredients have been incredibly inconsistent every time I go, BUT have been delicious every time.
When the weather is nice again, the Sox aren't playing, and you've got a hankering for an excellent deal on excellent tacos, La Verdad satisfies most excellently. Grab a jarritos and sit outside and you'll forget you've got to be back at work in 30 minutes.
Oh, and I lied, I've actually had their tortas as well for takeout. Though overly greasy, they are quite tasty, mostly due to the incredible oaxaca cheese they've got on top.
We journeyed to La Verdad one rainy Saturday night before taking in a flick at the Fenway Theater.
I picked the Pescado Taco Plate because of my unadulterated love of fish tacos. The plate had three excellent tacos covered in some tasty avocado puree, salsa and a handful of other mixed sauces that made it a bit of a mess, but totally worth it. The sides were good - the Yucatán slaw and plantain chips mixed well and served as a nice break between tacos. Add to that an ice cold Tecaté (in a bottle!) and it turned out to be a pretty nice meal, aside from being a little costly.
The Lady got the Chile Relleno Torta which was good, but I thought would be a little spicy but it was not so. The table hot sauce kicked it up the right amount. She also got the Michelada drink, which was beer with lime juice and a dash of hot sauce in it. I think next time she'll just stick to a margarita.
La Verdad, the truth.
The truth is this place is good. Of course, Ken Oringer, you really can't go wrong. Word Association with Ken to me is corn! Corn corn corn! Love his corn and love how La Verdad has this on their menu!
Taco Tuesdays! Yes! For $1, you can't go wrong, the limit is 5 and you can only get chicken, carnitas, and pork. They don't advertise this, so either remind your sever or if she is good, she will remind you!
Beware of their taco salad with chicken, my friend ordered this and she did not have an appetite ofr it when it arrived. Presentation looked like it was thrown in from the garbage or something and it was dark meat which she didn't enjoy. She was too sweet to send it back though. She did enjoy the taco shell !
Quesadillas were good and even better with hot sauce.
The tacos I must say were awesome. And the margaritas are nice and strong and damn tasty!
Service here is ok, our waitress looked like she was in a rush the whole time. But food and drinks all came out with the swiftness.
La Verdad is a great pit stop before or after a show at the HOB or a Red Sox game.
I had heard a lot of great things about this place and was a little disappointed when I went last night. I struggled between two stars & three - I ended up with 3 because I will definitely go back to get the guacamole.
Service - friendly, but very slow.
Atmosphere - typical Landsdowne bar I guess. I thought it would be a little nicer though. There was a lingering smell throughout the bar of old beer and a dead animal in the walls. The bathrooms were not pretty.
Food - the guacamole is TO DIE FOR. YUM. The chips are freshly made and awesome, fresh cheese sprinkled on top, and a very generous serving of freshly made guacamole.
The mexican corn was also amazingly good.
The tacos were eh... I got the chorizo & potato and I only ate two out of the 3, luckily, I was full of guac so it didn't really matter. I really wanted the fish tacos, but they are only served battered & fried, and I'm gluten free so I couldn't eat those -- I figured they could grill the fish, but they must buy it pre-battered, who knows.
My friends got a salad that said it would come with avocado, mushrooms, corn, and they added chicken, and when it came out it was literally just a giant plate of lettuce - the server brought them chicken after they said something, but still no avocado.
Overall, OK - but I guess I expected a Ken Oringer restaurant to be better.
Not so much a fan of this place. It was very noisy, so much so that I had to yell. The food was meh. I got some chip and salsa: great chips, bland salsa. Also shared a large plate of carnitas, rice, beans, and grilled corn on the cob. It tasted ok but by far the best part was the grilled corn (very sweet).
I shared a Sangria bowl with my bf for $20. It came out in a very large bowl for sure, but I don't think it would be possible to stuff any more ice into the thing. By the end of it I felt nothing and most sangria pitchers get at least 4 glasses out of. This I suspect was around 2.
All in all, it wasn't very impressive and the prices were a tad high, probably because of the location so close to fenway.
La Verdad is a great place for lunch! The burritos were delicious and fresh! If you like Taquerias then this is a place for you! I had a very flavorful bean burrito and my friend had the carnitas burrito. She said her burrito was very filling and the meat was very tender. The chips were also a hit! So crunchy! They sprinkle cotija cheese and fresh cilantro on top them. The best part about this place is that there was no wait (we came around 12:30pm) and the waitress was very nice! There is a little seating area so if you are coming for lunch it is better to come with 1 or 2 friends or do take out. They don't serve much for drinks during their lunch hour so order one of their Jarritos (I like the madarina flavor). I plan to come back here again!
I am gonna go ahead and update this review because its been a while since I've been there. Went in last night for a burrito and margarita after the game. WOW. That burrito was amazing. The steak inside was so tender and the rice perfectly cooked and flavored. It needed nothing... no sauce, no sour cream.. everything was prefect.
The margaritas are still as amazing as I remember. Freshly made and they squeeze a fresh half lime in every drink per order. The service was quick and friendly and the place was hopping. Great to see. I seriously wish this place wasnt on Landsdowne so I could hit it up more often but you can bet your ass everytime I am in the area hungry... I'll hit up La Verdad.

We went to La Verdad before the game on Saturday, and it was packed. I've never understood why a place that serves gourmet Mexican is on Landsdowne - it doesn't really fit the vibe - but I'm not complaining because it means an alternative to crappy sportsbar food.
We both got the taco plate, which comes with three tacos, beans, and slaw. The tacos are wrapped with soft tortillas instead of hard shells, which I'm sure surprises and displeases some people. They are also not very large - I could easily eat everything on the plate, and I'm not a big eater.
The duck was my favorite - the glaze on the meat is similar to that on Chinese spare ribs. The fish taco was also good - the toppings were more than the usual slaw, and while a bit messy to eat made it interesting. The grilled chile relleno with cheese was a hit too. We also got the grilled corn with the grated cotijo cheese, which I highly recommend.
Service was fine but the margaritas tasted like mix, and were not pleasant. I'd stick with the beer, or else tequila, nonmixed.
I love La Verdad and would go there more often if it didn't require a trip to Landsdowne, which is not one of my favorite hangouts.
I call it La Verbad. The very worst, dirty, overrated, and gross place in the city.
La VerBAD.
I went here last night with a few friends and I have mixed feelings.
Here are my pros and cons. Cons first.
- sat outside and were placed next to a heat vent, asked to be moved, waited 10 minutes, found out they sat someone else at the table they were going to move us to
- ran out of fish tacos
- replaced my fish with shrimp which was not so yummy
- no one informed us about $1 taco tuesdays, I had to find out after I spent $12 for three tacos when I saw the tiny flier tucked away in the bathroom - the waiter said he "thought we knew"...right...
+ dank corn chips (by dank I mean thick, yellow, and salty)
+ DELICIOUS duck tacos - by far my fav
+ sangria pitcher for $20 - about 5 or 6 glasses!
+ LA PALOMA drink = heaven...tequila, grapefruit soda, lime, and a sugar rim!
Summary: I'd definitely go back now that I know what's good, where to sit, and when the deals are.
touts "best mexican restaurant EVER" on website.
didn't quite live up to that reputation, but tacos were delicious (especially with a few dos equis)
Taco Tuesday
Taco Tuesday
Taco Tuesday
I began making plans to visit La Verdad within an hour of discovering that they serve the same grilled corn that has been so well-Yelped at Toro - La Verdad being slightly more convenient for me to get to than Toro. Tuesday would be the day... then I remembered, doesn't La Verdad have a taco special? Isn't it on Tuesdays? YES! And NO RED SOX GAME this Tuesday! Okay, definitely gotta go now...
So, on Tuesday after work, I headed over - it was an easy walk from the Fenway T stop. I ordered the grilled corn for $4.95, and four of their tacos: chicken, pork pastor, carnitas, (the three which are eligible for Taco Tuesday) and for $2.75 the Pescado Taco. Unfortunately the tacos didn't carry out well, and were a bit mushy when I ate them. The corn I treated as I had read somewhere - I squeezed on some lime juice, cut them off the cob, and enjoyed them in a civilized fashion - with a fork! It was good. :) (Although I did make a bit of a mess as worked on it with the knife. Tip: use a SHARP knife!)
FYI - they don't really serve dollar tacos as take-out at night; you're supposed to eat them there.
FYI 2 - the 20% off coupon is still available on their website, but I was told I couldn't use it for Taco Tuesday.
sox game was rained out, boo!
so we came here - amazing salsa sampler! super spicy pickled veggies were so tasty!
my chile relleno tacos were tasty and innovative, i ate them all...there were 3 of the smaller taco sizes.
i also tasted my friends chicken tacos as they were too spicy for her and they were delish as well...i need to go back here.
margs were high octane and got the job done - who complains about that?
little tiajuana in boston, what could be better!
Great Mexican? No. Go to Texas.
Good for some fish tacos and a cold beer before a Red Sox game. Yes.
"Tacos Without Dignity"
The Verdad here is that this place is gross. I was embarrassed for the kitchen and the owners that they would let a dish go out that no one cared about so obviously. The plate literally looked like vomit.
Maybe they had a bad night, but even for the mediocre Mexican food that passes for "amazing!!!" in Boston, this was underwhelming.
I ordered the fish tacos, and they arrived barely lukewarm. Well, specifically, the tortillas were lukewarm, the fish was cold. Either the dish was sitting out for a long time and they decided to serve it, or they keep fish in the fry basket for long periods of time and try and pass it off as freshly prepared. Poorly run operation either way. I ended up taking two bites.
A few classic signs from my two bite experience at La Verdad indicative of a place that is coasting and has people making food that don't care about their product:
1) Tortillas that were a little hard and lukewarm. Clearly microwaved and not fresh tortillas put on a griddle for two minutes.
2) The slaw on the tacos contained an inedible three inch chunk from the pith of the cabbage that was bigger than the piece of fish
3) The fish within the beer batter sarcophagus was cold and slimy. Very heavily breaded, like they were showered with a bucket of beer-batter, and then way over-fried for 20 minutes sometime earlier in the day.
4) The beans on the bottom of the plate, which I wouldn't eat if commanded to by an al-queda agent holding a gun to my head, had a congealed crusty layer on top, again indicative of an old dish. I poked them with my finger, and, to my surprise, did not prompt a verbal response from them. Also not surprising was that they were very cold. Maybe they serve taco plates with "re-fried bean ice cream", and I'm way off here.
5) Of the three tacos on the plate, ONE had most of its ingredients within the lukewarm tortillas.
6) The sauce was applied all over the plate. Some of it was on the tacos. I took a drop, and it was NOT rancid, shockingly. I think the plate was sitting somewhere in the kitchen for a long time, and the unmotivated kitchen staff carelessly showered the sauce from the squeeze bottle all over the plate before serving.
Some positives:
1) I didn't get food poisoning.
2) The waitress was trying very hard, and was very nice. I asked her to take a good look at the plate. In two seconds she said " Oh my god, I'm so sorry!", which was genuine.
3) The inedible plate of vomit that I wouldn't serve at pig's bris arrived at my table promptly
4) The beer I ordered was cold
5) I am not taking this too seriously, even though I am writing a 10000 words about fish tacos. It really was not a big deal, just one bad plate of food.
In all, DONT GO HERE. Sloppy execution made with lower quality ingredients designed for bigger margins per plate, not for taste or quality. If you want good fish tacos, schlep out to the Cottage in Wellesley.
However, maybe they just had a bad night, but even hot, those fish tacos looked like they would be like fair at best. Maybe the other menu items are better.
This is probably my favorite pre-sox-game place to eat.
You can usually get in and get some drinks and a bite to eat before a game.
The margaritas are great!
All the food tastes fresh, the fish tacos and carnitas tacos are probably my favorites.
The guacamole is very good as well. It comes with thick pita chips and I usually just opt to ask for more of the tortilla chips, personal preference I guess.
I've tried the beef tongue (la lengue) tacos, I didn't love it, it had good flavor, just a different consistency of meat than I was used to.
As to whether it is authentic or not, who the hell cares?
It's good. That's all you really need to know.
Also, I'm interested to try some of the other Ken Oringer restaurants.
I am not a big fan of Mexican food, but i really enjoy the tacos from La Verdad. The food is fresh and just the right size for a couple of bites. Order a mix so that you can try them all. All the tequila is chilled already which is very cool.
I recall finding a special on one night after a Sox game: $4 for a beer, shot of tequila, and a taco! It was great. I don't know if they still do it anymore, but keep an eye out for it.
Been here twice and both times i have left here disappointed. I got the Carne Asada Tacos this last time, and i have to say they were the tiniest things that i have ever seen,. They came with a tiny smidge of cole slaw and beans. the plate looked like a side dish. For the price it was a big let down. At the very least put more beans or slaw on the thing. Oh and the soft tortillas were just not built to handle anything with any liquid and fell apart almost immediately.
I would avoid this place.
Okay , so 82 reviews. I probably can't add much more to this except -- TRY THE FISH TACOS!!!!!!!!
I was surprised with tickets to a Sox game and all I could think was, I can finally try La Verdad! WooHoo! I'm in an area where fish tacos are hit or miss...well mostly miss. I marched passed the Sausage Guy, beer stalls, and Hot Dogs -- and didn't look back. These were the best fish tacos that I have ever eaten.
End 83rd review.
Do you remember that episode of South Park when Cartman, as part of a presentation on the contributions of Latinos in the arts, fashions a Jennifer Lopez puppet out of his hand, and Ms. Lopez proceeds to score the remainder of the episode with an assortment of songs with such varied lyrics as, "I'll fulfill all your wishes with my taco-flavored kisses" and, "I love you Ben [Affleck, obv], you almost make me forget about tacos"?
Yeah, I do too. That doesn't really pertain to my review of La Verdad in any way except in the respect that any time I order a taco I inadvertantly add, in my head of course, "Yeah, and don't forget the hot sauce, chulo!"
Anyway. I actually didn't order tacos. My friend and I started off with the guacamole for two, which, though probably the best guacamole I have ever had anywhere, was not made tableside as the menu claimed. The chips were liberally dusted with grated cotija cheese, and served alongside was a trio of accompaniments including two different salsas and a relish of pickled vegetables, which was vinegary and seriously excellent. It was a very promising start to the meal...and unfortunately was not a portent of things to come.
For my main I ordered the carne asada torta, which in retrospect was a bad decision considering I live a stone's throw away from Tacos Lupita, where they make tortas that I think we can all agree are among the top five sandwiches in Boston. The steak was very flavorful, but it was much too chewy to be put in a sandwich. The molasses-chipotle was overpowering and rather cloying, and the Oaxaca cheese, though delicious, was disappointingly unmelted. I abandoned the roll after a few bites in favor of eating the fillings - it wasn't that it was better or worse sans bread but it was just too difficult to eat in its original incarnation. Worse, I had been really excited for the plantain chips, but they showed up looking more like plantain shavings and absolutely sodden with grease. I barely touched them, and that's saying something.
My friend got the fish tacos and seemed happy with them, though she remarked that they were perhaps overly full for the size of the tortilla and very messy.
For dessert we split the churros. They didn't really bear any resemblance to churros I'd had in the past - they were super-doughy, almost spongy, and if they were fried lacked the crisp outer layer that most fried churros have - but the flavors were good and I wouldn't hesitate to order them again. NOT for just one person though - we're talking a festival of churro here.
With a pair of Dos Equis drafts, tax, and tip (and the 20% coupon from the website), it came to about $50 for two. I don't know what it says about me that I found that to be a fantastic bargain. Well, I do. I'm a snob. I've learned to live with it.
Atmosphere-wise, it's 50% Dia de los Muertos party and 50% I-think-I'm-trapped-in-that-movie-Nacho-Libre.
I'd go back. And would be open to amending my review upon trying a different entree.
If I had to pick a cuisine to eat, Mexican would probably be last on the list. However, La Verdad has the absolute BEST grilled corn appetizer. Its 2 ears split into 4 with sprinkles of cotija cheese and bit of paprika. Sooo SOOOO amazing!!!! I get this every time. The "small" guacamole appetizer is big enough to feed 4. Its a large portion so beware but it is absolutely guac-alicious. I really love their $1 tacos on Tuesday nights. Each taco is $1 compared to their regular menu price which is 3 tacos for $9. What a great deal!!! The pulled pork is probably my favorite, followed by the fish tacos, and then the chicken carnitas. YUM!!! Their margaritas are pretty good and they can even serve it in the huge scorpion bowls. Gotta try it (if you're in the mood to be social of course)
Went for a late lunch with friends on our June Boston excursion.
Nice decor, a little dark for the afternoon, we were sat quickly, bathroom was decent, had to ask for water, alright service, food was fine.
Four adults and two kids had chili relleno, carnitas, loco mundo, quesadilla x2, huaruches, horchata, iced tea, coke, beer x2, churros x2 - total w/o tip for this was $94.53. A smidge pricey I think but not too out there.
Not sure that I'd be making a beeline to this place when in the area again, but it wasn't a bad stop. An all around middle of the road experience.
Shocking! Shocking, I tell you, that I liked a Landsdowne Street establishment this month. I am not giving it 5 stars because I was there post day time drinking and Phish show. However, even in my, um, state this place rocked.
Great wine (although it was NOT wise of me to drink wine after a beer, booze, crappy beer line up) and the carne asada torta was a dream. The sesame seed roll was toasted to perfection. The plantain chips and slaw were awesome sides.
After I ate and drank some more I was leaving and tried to buy more food from the take out window. Wise friends talked me out of it.
The next morning was a rough one as I had to teach (why did I not call in sick?!) the children. But the memory of La Verdad kept me going through a terribly hungover day.
Don't run for the border...run to La Verdad.
Me llamo Jason y yo adoro tacos....and yes I liked La Verdad.
This place is understated quality Mexican food...which is hard to find in Boston. Usually, Mexican restaurants come in 3 varieties: Tex-Mex (cheese and red sauce over everything), Gourmet Mex (fancy iterations of the classics), and Real Mexican (the stuff that you would actually eat when you travel down to Mexico). I'd place La Verdad in the Gourmet Mex category, because they put some unique spins on classic tacos and burritos, but don't come here expecting to be magically transported south of the border.
The Food: Excellent, and priced right. Their taco selection features probably 12 different varieties. I'd strongly suggest the braised tongue (I know, it sounds gross...but it was recommended to me and it was awesome), the duck (with its sweet sauce and bits of grilled pineapple mixed in), and of course the fish tacos. I lived in LA for a couple of years, and had some pretty killer fish tacos out there....La Verdad's fish tacos can hang with those out there. I really like the subtle, but present flavors the tacos offer...you can tell all of the meats are cooked in different spices and sauces.
The Service: Quick, friendly, and on top of it. Knew the menu well, cleared plates, got our order out within 10 minutes. My only pause on the recommendation was from the bartender when we ordered a drink at the bar before we sat down....she was alittle slow on the draw to prepare our drinks.
The Drinks: Good, but not great. The tequila list is extensive...and I'd love to go back and do a tasting. The house margarita's were a mixed bag. The first one was ordered at the bar and was weak. I couldn't taste any alcohol. Some might actually like when they don't have a strong tequila burn taste to their margarita, but the cheap-skate in me thinks "rip-off". Then again, I usually like them strong and have been known to add tequila to even pre-mixed margarita mix. My second one ordered at the table came out stronger...but nothing taste-wise that would set it apart from the other 100 places in Boston that serve them.
The Atmosphere: Subtle, but cool. It does remind me of a taqueria that you'd find in Mexico (except much cleaner). I also like the Mexican wrestling masks displayed on the wall. The lighting is dim, so it sets a romantic mood inside.
Overall, I'm a convert, and I will be going back. I hear they have dollar Taco Tuesdays...so I'll have to check that out. Also, to give this review some credibility, I brought a friend from Texas that claimed its as good of Mexican as anything she's had back in Tey-haas (I also brought a friend from Japan that was confused by the menu, but found it very clever...and loved the braised tongue!).
Went on Friday for my birthday with the fiance and a friend because found a sneaky 20% coupon on their website and I had a hankering for guacamole.
Arrived around 7pm. Hostess said the only table she had right now was a hightop and pointed. No clue how we were supposed to fit 3 dinner plates on that one. So I said, we will have a drink and wait for an appropriately sized table. Thank you.
15 minutes and a delish margarita later, she sat us. We waited. Made direct eye contact with the waitress clearly in our section. We were patient, still working on our margaritas and giggling. A half hour passed. Yes, a half hour. We flagged down the waitress, alerted her to the situation. Her reponse- did you just sit here from the bar? No ma'am your highly talented hostess seated us here graciously a half hour ago.
Moved onto a pitcher of margaritas and placed our order. My friend was informed they were out of duck. Oh well, give me a minute to pick something else. OK, now we are all ordered. 10 minutes later, the waitress returns and informs me that they are out of chile relleno. Hmmph. this is going to be tough since almost all of their vegetarian options are made from chile relleno. I pout and order the chopped salad. Salad, on my birthday. Grrr.
Guac was yummy. Margaritas delicious. The fiance and friend's meals arrived. Guac is still yummy, because that is all I have to eat right about now. On my birthday. And about 10 minutes later my salad arrives. The waitress responds to my inquiry about the delay in my food, "well, your order went in late." I had enough margarita in me to almost get up, kick her in the shins and then kindly explain to her that my birthday dinner order was late because she did not inform me the kitchen was incompetent at ordering appropriate amounts of food for Friday dinner service.
The icing on the dreadful birthday cake was the disgusting dirty dish water smell that wafted from the kitchen whenever anyone entered or exited. And the candles- oh, well that was the fact that one of the woman's restroom stalls was defiled by some narsty defecation, and was not attended to from the time we arrived until we left.
Food:
Friend: Torta Plate: "tasted like an elementary school chicken patty"
Fiance: Chilaquiles: chicken on top of tortilla chips "is this what i ordered?"
Me: Chopped salad: barely chopped, tasted rather similar to the dirty dish water smell from the kitchen. ick.
Dessert: Churros: dense and barely cooked in the middle.
I enjoyed my birthday, but only because I had to laugh at how absurdly horrible our dinner was. And the margaritas were good. Ken Oringer: this place needs help.
Delicioso! Es la verdad!
While it could never hold a candle to my beloved El Pelon, La Verdad is the second best Mexican food I have found in the city. And while El Guapo was always my favorite, here tacos Al Pastor reign supreme! In a plate of three perfect mini tacos, the carnitas is tender and juicy, sweet and spicy. In a perfect proportion to the soft flour tortilla. And while most people probably would be dining on theirs with a large margarita, I prefer a glass of the Malbec.
Service was fairly average, I would have expected a little better considering it was not crowded. And we were disappointed to find out you had to order chips and salsa separately. I will gleefully come back for table service.
Also Tuesdays from 4-7 they have $1 tacos. Si, es la verdad!
**Update to my first La Verdad review.**
We ate in the restaurant for my birthday dinner. We were not as impressed with service and atmosphere in there. The staff are all in black which doesn't seem very festive or Mexican.
The music they were playing was something that didn't even have words, it was thudding clubs beats. ??? Random...Mexican restaurant, what about Mexican music??
Service is fast though. Food comes out lickity split. But the atmoshere just didn't do it for us. We didn't even want to stay and hang out for drinks after dinner, so we opted for the new Irish place next bar.

So we only got to try the counter service taqueria of La Verdad. We went on a busy Friday night and… Read more »
I came here when it was dead, early afternoon on a weekday, but I have to say I was highly impressed with the food. It was a tad pricey but they did give you big portions, also our waitress was a bit forgetful since we were the only other table that was in there. However it was delicious food. We ordered an appetizer and ended up sharing. I definitely must come back for drinks and a more lively atmosphere.
The a la carte tacos are where it's at. Slightly fancy, delicious recipes dominate their small menu. As a whole, it's about as good as you can do in the immediate Fenway area.
And, they give you a free taco if you come in wearing a sombrero.
I still need to try their acclaimed grilled corn and fish tacos. Sadly they were all out.. I am super skeptical since I use to live in Florida and have not had a better fish taco.
This place has charm... I highly recommend the crispy tostada and guacamole. Great late night place.. It's right under Lucky Strikes and close to Fenway.
I always go here when I am in Boston, mostly because the people I visit love it and always want to go. Honestly I focus more on the margaritas than on the food but the food is also good. Although my friend ordered some plain nacho dish that had no flavor at ALL. It tasted like nothing. I had the carne asada tacos and I liked the meat part but not really the taco wrap part. But so anyway, I am going to talk myself out of my four star rating if I keep criticizing the restaurant. The drinks are yummy and not too expensive but if you don't like tequila you are a bit limited. There is plenty of seating so you will rarely have to wait for a table. Also the location is great for going out after dinner or you can go get a margarita after seeing a game at Fenway.
Wow I think this place is great! The food has always been awesome and I love their margaritas. Although I'm not a big fan of the location, it is definitely one of the best mexican restaurants in Boston.
The food at this place is good, but it doesn't make up for the atmosphere and service.
I have been to La Verdad twice now and don't plan to go back. It was very cold in there both times. I wrapped my scarf around my shoulders and was still cold. I notice other people had jackets on, etc. too.
Plus , they don't serve coffee or hot tea! What's up with the no coffee thing?
The service was mediocre to bad both times. The second time I went they started bringing the wrong food to our table! They also seemed to have changed the menu in between the first and second time I was there. That was weird- it had only been two weeks!
Speaking of manus, it was so dark in there I could only read my menu by holding it up to the light of the TV.
Wish it was still Tiki Bar. Almost the same decor, but with a Mexican twist... could have taken this in a more pronounced direction.
SO EXPENSIVE. Yeah, yeah, this is the Fens and isn't it always? As someone who has spent a lot of time in Fenway/going to Sox games, I can tell you that a $10 for a straight shot of JD is still ludicrous. We were also told that large frozen margaritas were $32. Whaaaat?
Went here with a HUGE group early in the night (about 10pm) and it was dead. The bartender was a really nice guy, but hugely overwhelmed. To his credit, there were about 15 of us, but he was still sometimes hard to find-- and there were only about four other patrons!
One friend did get a dish of some kid of enchilada and it was divine-- I would be willing to give this place another go just to try some more of their food.
I love fish tacos. This is not my roundabout way of coming out, I just really do, and at this writing La Verdad takes the fish taco crown in the greater Boston area. Their pescado tacos are fresh, light and prepared with an expert balance of textures and flavors.
Value-wise, I was actually surprised at how reasonable the prices were - not taqueria-cheap, but not as gouge-y as they could get away with considering the location and pedigree. We went here before a recent Sox game and after a plate of delicious and filling tacos and a cold dos equis I was good to go for less than I would have spent on much less satisfying ballpark offerings.
I imagine I'll be coming back here year-round.
Scale 1 = poor, 5 = outstanding
CUSTOMER SERVICE: 4
FOOD: 3 -- one time it was 5, another time it was 2 (cold food). Sadly inconsistent given that Ken Oringer's Toro is our favorite restaurant in Boston and is unbelievably consistent. My wife fell in love with the fish tacos here.
AMBIANCE: 3 -- fine, even 'good' for landsdowne street
VALUE: 3 - when the food is good, the value here is high
This place actually pretty cool and bit more low-key than the surrounding bars. In some ways its like you're walking in to a bar on some mexican street...only with hot bartenders and waitresses. I wouldn't classify it as a dive bar but it definitely has the look and feel of one. I only had a couple of drinks here until i figured out i was in the wrong place waiting for my date. D'oh. Anyway, this place is definitely the Yin to Tequila Rain's Yang, so if you're looking for authenticity you'll find it here.
