If you had asked me to comment 2 years ago, I would have given it 5 stars. The food was good, the servers were smart, attentive and usually very, very cute....
But something has really gone wrong. i was told there was a change in ownership awhile back and that can be the only reason. The menu has stayed the same, and occasionally we get a taste of what it used to be -- but we only go once in awhile now instead of 2-3 times a month.
Last time in I ordered the cassoulet and basically got sausage and beans... where's the duck? It's become French food for people who like the idea of French food, but don't really know what it is. It's really too bad. The major sign of it's downturn is that you can usually grab a parking spot there during dinner hour -- that shows there is a big problem.
I still liked the Shepherds Salad last time I was there tho'.....

I have to agree with Ivonne that La Vache isn't as excellent as it used to be. It's not my first choice anymore which saddens me.
Don't get me wrong I still love this place! The warm bread and butter that is immediately brought to the table is a great starter but don't fill up on bread which isn't hard to do. I've sampled several of the appetizers but my fave is the tartines provencal which is small slices of bread with an olive tapenade, tomatoes and olive oil, and 4 cheeses. They are so flavourful and served hot.
The cream of tomato soup is a must! It's a tomato bisque. It is so smooth.
You can't go wrong with the salmon...ever. Love the chicken pasta and pizzas. My moms swear by the Fisherman's Casserole.
Have to sample the Chocolate Mousse.
Be sure to ask for Ken's section...great server and super easy on the eyes. ;-)
I really used to like this place and several years back I would have given it a higher rating. This was my go-to joint when I had a good Euro craving and they always delivered. They had that awesome richness of European food without the hefty price.
Notables: The warm-crusty bread + herb butter, a good tomato soup and the croque madame + pomme frittes are the highlights of La Vache menu. The pre-fixe menu is a fantastic deal if you can swing making it on the night they have it which escapes my mind.
However, I haven't gone since my last visit because the service was deplorable at best. There was also a decline in quality of the food.
I don't know what happened to them, change in management? ownership? Who knows but their wait staff sucks and I don't care how good the food is... if I have to wait for 15 minutes to order and then another to get my tab, you got to wonder if they really care about their customers.

So BAD I had to yelp.
I had been to La Vache for dinner once and lunch maybe three times and had a reasonably good meal though I cringed when I got the bill--I only went there because it is a favorite of a friend of mine. My husband had never gone there, so I brought him with the spend $50 and save $25 coupon.
Unfortunately, our waiter was embarassingly unprofessional when he served the table next to us. The customer complained that his medium RARE filet mignon was actually closer to WELL, and wanted it replaced. The waiter argued first, took it back to the kitchen, returned with a FLASHLIGHT and tried to explain that it is pinker in the kitchen light. "I'm not trying to argue with you, but..." The man attempted to eat it--afraid at this point to send it back, but could not stomach it so just ate some of his wife's meal.
Next, as though a cloud had settled over that table, two men ordered dirty martinis for their drinks. They did not taste right, so the waiter made several excuses and then said he would make the drinks himself. When he re-delivered fresh drinks, quite some time later, he explained in far more detail than necessary what might have been wrong with hte "old, solids in the oive container." Disgusting. The patrons were dismayed, "Who does that."
My husband and I were chilled by the bad vibes coming from the server and that closely neighboring table, which ruined our celebratory dining experience.
Then, our own food was poor at best. Justin had ordered a filet mignon as well--which he had been craving and which I a grand treat for our tight student budget. His was undercooked, but he didn't dare send it back. My food was uninspired, the shrimp pasta dish was heavy but did fare a decent number of shrimp.
La Vache... I wish a French restaurant in the States would have better tasting French food (perhaps a true French cook?) , though the French ambiance of tightly set tables and dim lighting is nice.

This used to be better, a lot better. Judging from this last visit, it has slid down a lot in quality, but it's still a pleasant place to grab a casual dinner. Dog owners have to give it special consideration for dog friendly tables outside, but even then, I'm only bumping it up to 2 stars. That's pretty crummy now I think about it.
We came here on a Tuesday night at around 6PM. It wasn't crowded at all and we were able to get a nice secluded table on the patio where Angus could sit with us and watch the people and dogs pass by. It might be a little snug for a big dog, but I think you could make it work. We usually like to take out of towners here because of the low key casual environment and it's close to a lot of places. It's funny that now we're the out of towners. One of the best dishes here is their salmon and brie appetizer pizza. It is still very good, but something seemed different from what I remembered as great. We ordered several small plates on this occasion. The fromage plate was mediocre. The charcuterie plate as OK and the fried calamari was good. They have a happy hour until 6PM (I think) and these small plate appetizers are half off. All together we paid about $35 for the 5 small plates and 2 drinks for 3 people. Inside is pleasant as well. Our host guy behind the bar was very attentive in filling up our water.
I think the food is the biggest disappointment. I might not make a special trip to come here again. If I happened to be in Hillcrest, I would still have to think twice about visiting. It's not that I had a bad time, but I think the food has declined enough that I'm willing to try other places. Our waitress was fairly mediocre. Only watching a few tables and we only saw her sparingly. We were outside, but I don't see that as an excuse. There are plenty of better alternatives in the area, even if you do have a dog. Parking lot is tiny. You usually won't have a problem though. DO NOT PARK AT THE WAMU NEXT DOOR, EVEN IF THEY'RE CLOSED! I received a ticket for parking at the closed bank lot my previous visit. Ridiculous.
Price: Usually about $35 per person for dinner
Food: Mediocre
Service: OK
Ambiance: Good
Location: OK
Visited in April 2008 and found the food and service to be excellent for a small, local place. I don't remember the exact dishes but our party of five enjoyed it and a bottle of wine.
Had a very European feel because the service was not overbearing like most American restaurants. They were there if you wave, but kept out of the way otherwise.

I went to this restaurant on a Saturday and it was a delightful little place. My girl friend had a 50% off coupon and we decided to try out the place. I have to say that the food was very delicious. The place is a little cramped but it has an overall cozy feeling to it. We had the scallop salad (very flavorful) as an appetizer. Our entree was the seafood pasta. I will be coming back soon

I'm torn, I really am. I've gone here once for dinner, and then tried their breakfast yesterday. Here's the breakdown:
The prix fix is a great deal and definitely worth trying once.
For breakfast, they bring out free croissants and jam which I was crazy about.
The artichoke omelette is amazing, they don't skimp on the artichoke hearts.
BUT....the service blows, BIG time.
Both times the service has been horrendous, very rude and inattentive. We sat at our table yesterday for 15 minutes waiting for our waitress to finish what she was eating at the bar just so we could order. Atmosphere is a big part of the experience for me, so I had to go with 2 stars even though the food is good.
Duck salad: good
Seafood stew (17.50 @ lunch): Take Campbell's Tomato soup and add last night's leftover salmon and raw, uncooked vegetables. Blech!
Whenever I crave mushrooms (like right at this moment, for eg), my tastebuds remind of this place, which I've only eaten at a coupla times but always remember fondly. The wild mushroom gnocchi is like the long, lost, amazing lover I never had. It's all about that cream sauce. And the soft pillows of gnocchi. With the fleshy bites of mushrooms. Dimly lit setting. Siiiigh.
The busy streets surrounding it (5th and Robinson) can be distracting, esp with the busses passing by every 15 and people trying to parallel park. Sorry I can't comment on anything else, I'm blinded with desire. Is it the french thing that does it? No clue. Regardless, this place is well worth it for the aphrodisiac you get in exchange. I mean, meal. The meal you get.

I really can't understand all these 3,4 & 5 star reviews. C'mon, people! Have you ever eaten French food before? Or maybe this place has gone seriously downhill in the last 4 weeks, since the last review was written?
This place is DISGUSTING. I don't know which is more disgusting - the actual food or the price they charge for it. First, let's start off by saying that it will easily cost at least $60 for 2 people - and that's just food (soup or salad, appetizer, entree). Then the wine or beer. With tip, expect a about a $80-$90 night. Now, seriously...keep that in mind when I describe the meal.
The place was practically deserted, at peak dinner hour. Should have been the first clue. The bread was atrocious. It consisted of two triangular-shaped "buns" which were stale and dry. WTF is that?? With all the wonderful French bread out there, you serve THIS? It's literally something you would buy pre-packaged in the bread section at Albertson's. These buns were accompanied by some greasy butter concoction which was equally gross.
We then ordered soup. Me, the carrot soup and my boyfriend got the tomato. Both were edible, but they were out of the box Trader Joe's soups. Again, that soup is fine, but not for $5 a cup...should be homemade. I think they took boxed soup and added heavy whipping cream to make it "fancy". Soup temperature was lukewarm.
The entree was the worst. After reading this person's review about the mushrooms being so damn great, I thought, "OK, I'll order the chicken breast with wild mushrooms". I ordered it with a side of frites. It came out not with frites, but vegetables. The vegetables were soggy and greenish-brown. They had obviously been cooked and left to sit in a pot of water for however long. The chicken was possibly the most revolting thing I've ever tasted. It was overcooked, THICK CUT as hell, (not sliced thin and tenderized like most "upscale" places"), and was swimming in watery mushroom cream sauce. I threw up in my mouth just now remembering it. Taking two bites was enough.
My boyfriend got the Filet Mignon. This was also doused in some kind of overwhelming amount of bernaise cream sauce which was completely flavorless and cold. The steak itself had been frozen and defrosted in a microwave (or in some improper, rushed fashion) as was evidenced by the taste. It was also flavorless, dry, and had that slightly freezer-burnt taste. Better tasting than the chicken dish I got, but honestly, a Big Mac would have satisfied me more than that.
Also ordered a bottle of beer, which was warm. Jesus C, how hard is it to put a bottle of beer in a FRIDGE???
Overall, the meal was revolting. It cost us $65, but luckily we had a $25 off coupon. Still...it was absolutely ridiculous to pay this amount of money for something so sickening. I was sick the rest of the night, and couldn't sleep because of horrible stomach pains.
Honestly...if you had $80 to spend on dinner with your significant other...would you take a chance on this garbage, or go to a nice, thorougly reputable restaurant? I thought so.

I've only been here for the late lunch hours, but the food is okay. The escargot is garlicy buttered goodness. The salads are also great. The few entrees that I've had have been just okay. Not bad, but I think the apps and salads is where it's at. The service is pretty sad and slow. Even when there's only a couple of tables. For more french food options try 'st. tropez' a block over on fifth.
I don't know what "La Vache" means but it could very well mean "average" in French for all I am concerned with. I ordered dinner off the prix fixe menu and chose the boeuf bourguignon as my entree (along with the potatoe/artichoke soup and chocolate mousse for dessert). The boeuf bourguignon is also probably just a fancy name for dry beef stew...nothing special here. On the other hand, the potatoe/artichoke soup was the most interesting part of the meal as it had a puree kind of texture and there's wasn't any substance to the soup but the flavors were quite unique and you could taste a good amount of both artichoke and potatoe.
I'm not sure why they limit their prix fixe menu to 8 people but it's not something they need to limit because it's not like it's all that. The artichoke chicken pasta looked like a much better prix fixe menu option. On a final note, this place really does have a cool ambiance and nice music (whether it's french or not, I do not know) in the background.

The first time I went to La Vache it was to grab a leisurely lunch with a friend. When I first walked in the brown paper table coverings and unique dcor caught my interest. As I skimmed the menu I had a hard time choosing what to order with such a variety of dishes. I decided to try the homemade carrot soup and wild mushroom pasta. The soup was delicious and pasta was tasty. Maybe not the best pasta, but with the variety I felt as if I did not pick the best entre. When I headed back for dinner I went with the Scallops, with a light saffron sauce, rice, a light pastry, and was definitely pleased with my choice. While the menu has a variety to offer some items are just good and others are great. One hint- plan on having a "leisurely" meal as the service can be slow.
Not that rad, the hostess was nice but we waited 15 min till our waitress came. The food was average, but their house salad was pretty good. I guess we might have caught them at an odd time.

I was by my lonesome and very hungry on a Saturday afternoon so I decided to venture out for some dining (maybe I confuse boredom with hunger. I should probably get a better hobby).
So, anyway, I get in my car and drive. I knew I wanted to relax with some wine and I knew for damned sure that I wanted escargot (on a hot ass day? what was I thinking? and, I wanted to sit outside..i was later persuaded to sit in).
I was dreading the chaotic parking that is Hillcrest most of the time, but much to my surprise I drove up to the restaurant and parked right in front. It was a f8cking miracle, I tell you. That made the experience of the restaurant that much better.
So then, I walked into a very cute french restaurant.
I ordered my wine, escargot, and caesar salad. The waitress was very accommodating with her politeness and soft french accent. The food turned out to be really good and I quite enjoyed reading my US trash mag with the elegant food. Nothing says classy like Nicole Ritchie's baby bump and escargot.

Most of the mixed reviews you see here are typical of people's experience at La Vache - on a good night, it's great, on a bad night, not so great. I'm lucky, I guess, because I've not had a bad night there.
I have had many great dinners at La Vache, as I am a sucker for Cassoulet and steak frites. There are just too few French Brasseries in San Diego.
One word of caution - their medium rare is often very rare. I order my steaks medium after one-too-many nearly raw slabs.
Having enjoyed breakfast at La Vache, I decided to return for dinner to see if the food and service were consistently good.
We started with the Crispy Calamari for an appetizer. The portions are hefty (great for sharing) and it comes with a tasty salad. One thing I was not crazy about was the French Aioli Saffron Sauce that it came with since it resembled mayo a lot more than anything I had imagined. If it had a stronger flavor of garlic or saffron, I would have enjoyed it more. For example, the aioli at Cafe Chloe is really good...
I ordered the Seafood Pasta with linguini and tomato provencal sauce. The sauce had lots of flavor with black olives but the pasta itself and the seafood did not really impress me. I felt that this was something I could easily make at home myself.
My husband ordered the Rack of Lamb as it was their "Signature Entree". One of my pet peeves is when the kitchen does not cook my meat to my specifications. It can really ruin a meal. That said, I distinctly remember my husband saying that he would like his lamb cooked medium rare. Much to our dismay, the meat came out medium well, borderline well done. We both felt as though had the meat been cooked the right way, it would have been fantastic.
For dessert, we tried the Profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. This was also one of their "signature dishes" and came highly recommended by the waitress. In all honesty, anything drenched in ice cream and chocolate sauce is bound to be heavenly, however, the profiterole itself tasted too spongy to me. I almost preferred it without the pastry.
All in all, the experience was a good one. The service was friendly and attentive. I would most definitely go back for the bread alone. It comes with this herb butter that is to die for. I wouldn't say this place is authentically French but it is still charming and I will go back for sure.

La Vache has very good sandwiches, soups, and salads for the lunch hour. Their chicken spinach salad has so much chicken, mushrooms, and bacon that it is simply delicious. I also like the laid-back atmosphere and the low key music they play here. I have also been here for the prix fixe menu, which is a good deal (although it didn't blow me away or anything). But for approximately $17.50, you get a salad, choice between three entrees, and chocolate mousse for dessert. This special is only on Tuesdays. I am also determined to try this place for breakfast.

The Wit's End apparently has just closed temporarily, as the restaurant has changed owners. I learned this hard way as I was planning to have a pannini and a beer or several with coworkers on a nice Friday night.
Instead, we walked next door to La Vache, which ended up being quite the cute little restaurant. I liked the ambiance; the location was nice and the service friendly. The best part of the whole restaurant experience? The paper table cloth and the assortment of crayons. Hanging out with coworkers that I really love to be around, drawing on tablecloths, and enjoying pretty tasty food--not a bad way to spend a Friday evening.
I enjoyed a delicious chicken breast with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. Pretty good.

I agree with Cindy D - nothing special! The food was fine and the service was fine but nothing really "wowed" us.
it may be that I am the one who actually deserves two stars for being stupid enough to get the fish at a restaurant named "la vache". Everything else was mediocre.
This is a great spot for a romantic night out or a group of friends. We went on a Sunday night and it was packed. The food was sensational, and the wine list was extensive. Sadly, we couldn't have any wine, but the list was tempting.
We sat at the bar and were treated to delicious bread and butter as only the French can do it. The atmosphere was lively and comforable, but also elegant. We really loved it.
I had the wild mushroom risotto...so good! I took home half because I couldn't bear to throw it away, but sadly I never got to finish it. I also had the delicious carrot soup...mmmmm.

No good, hardly memorable. Over priced.
I lived right down the street so I was always curious about it. Figured it would be a nice place to go when my parents were in town.
The service was poor. Fake nice in the beginning and then no where to be found after they bring your food. I'm guessing it's because they are French.
I don't remember what we ordered...some bland pasta. Maybe I just don't have a taste for French food. Better off some place in La Jolla. Come on, they're next to Einsteins and American Apparel. What was I thinking coming here?

The only thing was, it wasn't mind blowing enough that I'd suggest it for a special dinner with Mom or Dad... go to Mille Fleur for that... but as a local French eatery, this absolutely suffices.
Parking may be an issue so plan to pay for it or park in a nearby lot...

I can't give it 5 stars because my sister ordered a pricey salmon dish that didn't taste so good. She let my mom taste some of it (and my mom typically eats anything), and my mom couldn't eat another bite.
Other than that...
I love the shrimp w/aioli sauce. Love the house salad, but the best thing is ...THE BREAD. It's the closest thing to the bread I've eaten in France (crispy on the outside, soo soft on the inside, great flavor). The herb butter is great too.
You even get crayons to draw on the table.

I like La Vache. It's cozy and comfortable. I have noticed that some nights the food is better than others. I have a couple of favorite dishes there. One night it will be perfect and one night a bit too salty but still, I keep going back so there you have it.
La Vache just needs to work on consistency in their quality.
UPDATE - I just went to La Vache for Valentine's Day. (Why do I always seem to find myself at La Vache on Valentine's Day?) Anyhoo, I just gave them another star because while I wasn't crazy about the seating arrangements, I had the most perfectly cooked lamb. I can't remember the last time that I saw lamb cooked this beautifully. It practically melted in my mouth. True story. Way to go La Vache.
I can't believe I've lived here in SD for this long and have never been here before. The BF and I went for my birthday the other night and it was the perfect place to be. We found a coupon on their website for $25 off any food purchase of $50 or more (no drinks), so our meal (appetizer, soup for each, main courses) came out to be $48. Amazing!
We ordered the fried calamari plat, which was delicious. The calamari was very light and fluffy, slightly crisp, not the least bit rubbery. The saffron aioli, however, was basically just butter. That didn't bother me one bit, but Steven's a perfectionist and he likes it when the menu description actually matches the food.
We both loved our soups. He had the French onion and I had the carrot. Never in my life have I imagined that carrot soup would be so wonderful; I was thinking that carrot soup is to carrots what tomato soup is to tomatoes, but I was wrong. The carrot soup was so rich, flavorful, wonderfully textured...I've been thinking about it ever since.
Our main courses were decent (they are what prevents me from giving this place 5 stars). My salmon with dill butter sauce was exceptionally flavorful, but the salmon was a bit overcooked and dry. Steven's fisherman's stew had more wine in the sauce than he would have liked, and he really loves wine. He also said that there wasn't very much seafood in it; lots of veggies, though.
The staff was delightful, the atmosphere was cozy and nicely designed, and I would certainly recommend this place (especially if you can get the $25/off coupon!)

I've enjoyed their food and service every time I come to this restaurant. Most menu items are very reasonably priced, and the portions were just right. In addition, every Tuesday nights there is a special Prix Fixe dinner menu as well as the regular menu. The $17.50 Prix Fixe menu is an excellent three-course dinner. Also, the same Prix Fixe dinner is offered for a short time between 5-6pm every night.
My favorites are: Crispy Calamari Plat: "La Vache's Signature Appetizer"... crispy tender calamari, served with a french aioli saffron sauce. Home made Tomato and Carrot soups are creamy and intensely flavored, which compliments well with the basket of warm french bread.
La Vache is also renown for their seafood entrees, which they prepare with an array of some amazing French sauces. The Grilled Shrimp & Scallops Salad(Large tender, caramelized shrimp and scallops grilled with herbs, spices & hearts of palm served over mixed greens with pinenuts, walnuts & topped with french honey mustard dressing) is excellent, or their Gourmet French Pizzas are also fantastic, and enough to share between 2-3 people.
I've yet to try their breakfast, and am sure it will not disappoint!

I think Larry David or Jerry Seinfeld would say "..eh." La Vache was just... eh. The service can be anywhere on the spectrum. The signature dish, rack of lamb is actually served slightly overcooked. Overcooking in a French restaurant? Mon dieu! Stick to the filet mignon dinner (though I concede most can make just as well at home). The french onion soup is as good as it comes, salads use high grade excellent quality produce (probably from up the street at whole foods). They are limited to alcohol, beer and that new han liquor they purport to make cocktails of (just say no). The wine is good as table wine comes, but this isn't the sort of place where you sit and order flights of wine. It's very casual and comfortable but for what I'm accustomed to in French restaurants it doesn't meet all the benchmarks. I still stop in every few months to see if much changes. It's static. The small space is best for couples and smaller groups only.

My vegetarian friends really like the pasta here, especially the pesto gnocchi. Because of my carnivorous leanings, I ordered a veal stew--like a blanquette de veau, but not as tasty.
The menu offers a nice varied selection of French country food, and the French bistro setting is warm and cozy. A romantic place for a date, but the food won't knock your socks off.
Damn, the French really love salt. Pretty much everything we had was could have been decent if not for the massive dose of salt they used. The pesto gnocchi was awesome, but it was more of a side dish than a main entre, way too rich. The waitress wasn't very enthusiastic either. It had potential, but I doubt I'd make it a point to go back.

La Vache, which by the way means "the cow" in French--great way to welcome and put at ease bilingual vegetarians--connotes a very disappointing experience in my culinary adventures.
Well, I am by no means a veggie, although I sometimes delude myself into believing I could become one, so I shamelessly ordered one of my all time favorites: the Filet Mignon au poivre. As I excitedly lifted the first piece up to my mouth, I noticed that my medium rare treasure looked a bit "rarer" than I so wished. I was unfortunately right. I might not be a Veggie, but I am no tartar steak eater either. My love of meat is that of a normal carnivore, not that of a famined Cro-Magnon!
Conclusion: I did not appreciate my entree. Expectation is a vicious thing...Furthermore, one of my other senses was ticked off, and that is my hearing. The background music was loud and a total misfit for a French restaurant: Punk and Rock. Holy Cow!
