This place is phenominal. the sandwiches are good and big as hell.
You ever eat something when your really stoned or drunk and think it's the best thing ever?
well I wasn't either one and that's how I felt after eating one of these.
* 4.5 stars *
I get excited easily.
When the brilliant Patty P came up with the idea of getting together for lunch so we can cross off another item on the Big Eat SF list, I wanted to respond with something cool, but can only come up with "YAY!"
On the 7 x 7 list is:
#39 Pierna Enchilada from La Torta Gorda
I love how this place is casual and homey. Spanish music playing in the background, there's counter seating available, fresh juices in their big containers on your left when you walk in.
I was sipping on my sweet cantaloupe juice while looking at the menu and noticed that a lot of the names are in Spanish. (you know this place has got to be authentic) Our server was more than happy to help us with the translation.
Patty and I dug into that delicious Chile Relleno ($9.45) served with rice and beans. It was stuffed with (cotija?) cheese and swimming in tasty sauce! Tortillas are provided with this dish so you can sop up the saucy goodness. The rice and bean portions are on the smaller side. (or maybe I'm just so used to seeing rice and beans that fill up half my plate?)
That torta was akin to a sammy, but this one didn't leave me hungry two hours later. It must be from the avocado, refried beans, queso freso, mayo , onions and jalapeno that filled the torta. The tender pork just pulled everything together. I now think that torta translates to "so good" in English. Get the junior size for $5.45 and it's enough to tide you over til the next meal.
If the affordable prices and the good food here don't get you excited, then you my friend, are just hopeless.
When the lovely Janice C suggested La Torta Gorda for lunch, I had to google image torta just to find out what it was. It looked to me like a delicious sandwich, so I agreed.
And a delicious sandwich it is! Since both Janice and I have become obsessed with finishing 7x7's Big Eat SF List, we took this opportunity to check off one more item.
#39: Pierna Enchilada from La Torta Gorda (surprise surprise, another pork item)
But the real surprise...I really liked it!! Has this list turned me into a pork lover already? It was delicious, flavorful, spicy....all around amazing. I don't think this is the torta I'll pick next time, as they've got lots of option and while I may be turning into a pork lover, I still love other things more.
Most amazingly, the tortas are delicious AND cheap. $5.45 for a small and $7.75 for the large.
In addition to the torta, we also split the chile relleno. It too, was tasty, and I loved the tortillas they served to help sop up all the extra sauce. I wished for more avocado on top, but that's just because I'm an avocado fiend. For $9.45, I also wished there were more rice and beans on the plate. Though I did leave La Torta Gorda stuffed, so I guess their rice and bean measurements aren't too far off.
I enjoyed my multiple journeys to the Mission this week to cross a few more items off my list. I realized while here that my Espanol skills are really slipping. A lot of the menu is in straight Spanish and I was straight confused....better study up!!
Can you picture a more quintessential 24th street scene? Spanish music playing. The guy who yells "GOAL" doing his thing on TV. Tortas being served. It was my sister's first time in this part of town, and I was hoping La Torta Gorda would deliver the goods. Indeed they did.
We both got the junior grilled chicken with refried beans, which we agreed was anything but junior. The guy taking our order was very accommodating, adhering to our requests to leave the bad stuff (cheese, mayo) off and put the good stuff (spinach, tomato) on. We also agreed it was absolutely delicious.
Splendid service, quintessential atmosphere, great prices, fantastic food. And an Obama picture on the door. The Mission at its finest!
They close at 8PM so it was totally cool of them to keep the place open for us and let us lounge around even though we rolled in at 7:45. Plus they were super helpful with the menu and actually told us to get a smaller size.
Pierna Enchilada Torta + Chorizo & Egg Torta - the junior size is a good portion
Caldo de pollo - they were nice enough to split the soup for us and we both got a large piece of chicken in our bowls and it's serve with a side of diced onions, cilantro, jalapenos and limes.
Champurrado - a hot chocolate mixed with corn...super rich and yummy
Order whatever they tell you to- seriously, they listen to what you want and then give you something better, off the menu and seasonal. For me, it was quesadillas, one with squash blossoms and another one with corn and mushroom. To die for!
My friends had the chicken mole enchilada, veggie tacos and a carne asada torta. Everyone was over the moon with their order.
We also brought in our own beer (leave it in the brown bag) and shared a strawberry auga fresca that was sweet and refreshing.
Great outdoor patio seating, super nice staff. They got four stars because two out of six orders came out wrong (but were quickly replaced) and the food took forever to come out (they were packed to the gills and took 40-minutes plus to deliver our food to the table).
God Damn these are some big sandwiches! Awesome flavor good service you really can't go wrong. So if you want something other than a burrito this is a great spot. Sit at the bar and take your time picking the right one off the huge list.
Going to have to try the Mole' and I'll report back.
Tortas are good but they need a little more flavor and not as big as they claim. Still would prefer going to LOS PICUDOS for tortas. Their tortas are bigger, cheaper and more flavorful.
Not as divey and hole in the wall-ish as Tortas LP down the street. I think that's why the torta didn't taste as good. Or maybe just because it wasn't as flavorful and the toppings were somewhat lacking.
Ordered up a tinga torta, which is shredded chicken cooked with onions, tomatoes, and chipotle. Wouldn't order it again because the tinga was really wet and made my torta super soggy. Plus, it didn't have that kick I was looking for with the chipotle. Tinga tu madre. Just kidding, these workers are cool. So they said they had avocados in the torta. Really? Didn't notice.
They also have those bacon wrapped hot dogs here ($4). Way to early to order one of those for lunch tho. Those only taste good at 2am.
Great place to go with coworkers.
After getting hooked up with my new board at Mission Skateboards, I wandered down 24th St for a bite to eat. I remember reading about La Torta Gorda on Yelp and decided to seek it out. Luckily, I'm a visual learner and remembered what La Torta looked like based on the signage since I had no clue what the cross street was.
I was the second or third person in the restaurant and was served promptly. I ordered a mango agua fresca and a large torta with carnitas. This thing was pretty huge but served on a flat round roll which I never had before. The torta was good but the flavors didn't really pop as I would've expected. The agua fresca was excellent though.
Overall, more like 3.5 stars. Great service and a pretty decent torta.
yumtastic
chicken milanesa torta
sin chile =0 i know i'm a mexiCANT
with a jarrito and then hit up panaderia la mexicana across the street for your pan mexicano
seriously no better way to go i promise you will not be let down .. cause come on would i let you down? NO
This is my favorite torta place in SF overall. Their Puebla-style dishes (huitlacoche, squash flour, black mole) is all pretty good, mole in particular, but not really the specialty of the house (nor as economically priced), and neither is (I presume without having ever ordered it) the white-person breakfast stuff. The specialty is the tortas, and these are really amazing tortas. The bread is rad, the meat is cooked to order by attentive, professional cooks (who aren't surly if you ask them to do things in a specific way!). There's a lot I haven't tried yet (tinga! chorizo!) because my "usual" (in the photos) is such a charmer I can never bring myself to experiment beyond it.
A note about drinks: tortas are traditionally accompanied by smoothies, and I think their shake-menu might be shrinking, but if you come in between rushes, they'll make fancy/custom/crazy drinks like "the jamaican hammer," which is banana+vanilla ice cream+double shot of espresso!!!
Again with the acronyms, OMFG!!! Best torta in the city!!!
My food lovin' BF introduced me to this spot about a year ago and I instantly fell in love with the carna asada torta. Soft, warm bread, melted queso, juicy carne, red onion, a thin layer of mayo, and jalapeno's to kick it up a bit.. SUPERB!!
They also have an extensive menu, offering everything from sandwiches, panini's, full entree plates, smoothies, salads, tacos, a full coffee bar, breakfast items and much more.
I usually take my food to go, but the inside is cozy and sweet.. an old diner vibe from the 50's with old school coca~cola Tiffany-like hanging fixtures, limited counter seats as well as tables for larger groups, salsa and mariachi music playing in the background and an open face kitchen.
I actually just got back from this place a few minutes ago and am staring down at my beautiful carne asada torta as I type this.. time to devour.
I'm a huge fan of solid portions of food. Getting my money's worth is important to everyone unless you're on the upper echelon of "greenbacks in yo pocket."
Here, the environment is warm and friendly, the tortas are big and very tasty, seasoned and cooked to perfection. I've always thought it was too close to call whether a panini is better or torta, but I guess it's kinda different and kinda similar when you discuss the process of making the sandwich. It's a nice lunch place and worth five or six dollars to put back into the community. Also enjoy 24th street...
Please eat here soon!
This was my first torta experience, which is surprising seeing that I've been living in the deep Mission for 3 years now. I didn't find anything all that special with tortas but I did appreciate a Mexican cuisine that wasn't just some other arrangement of tortilla, meat, cheese, and salsa. I ordered a junior carnitas torta (definitely appreciate the junior size) and was pleased with the thick fresh bread and well-seasoned meat.
La Torta Gorda gets 4 stars because they provide a quick, cheap, simple option for when you're hungry. Also, service was great - we got the royal treatment when they set up a table for us in the back patio. I'm completely satisfied with this torta joint and don't feel the need to try out any others in my hood.
LTG is fantastic! Super friendly service, cute diner atmosphere and tasty tasty food- breakfast, lunch and dinner.

My life sucks! I have to work on many weekends (unlike like 99% of my coworkers), I don't have a car (not necessarily sucky, but when your in BFSSF, far from any cookery type place, some suckiness starts to set in) and there are not too many places i can pick up a lunch on my way to work on a Sunday morning (I guess thing could be worse). La Torta Gorda is open at 6:30 AM on SUNDAY!!! Not that I am even close to getting up by then, but it does mean that when I drag myself out of bed, i can get a fat torta on my way through the mission. One mean sannie too, they not cheap, but when i get a regular size, they are two meals worth of food easily, so in the end they are a bargain.
I've had the milanesa and the carnitas tortas so far, and both were quite good. I found the milanesa tender and flavorful, while though the carnitas were good, they were a tad dry. As you've probably read, each sandwich comes with refried beans, cheese, avocado, and jalepenos. The bread might be a little thick, but it's soft and doesn't get too much in the way of enjoying the fillings.
Oh man, i gotta try the Cubano, and the chorizo con huevos...
Oh man, i gotta try the horchata....
Tortas Los Picudos is much, much better. Tortas El Primo is better.
Pros:
(1) The regular size sandwich is gigantic.
(2) The carnitas are pretty tasty, not fatty enough, but still good.
Cons:
(1) Milanesa de res is too thin. This results in a breaded jerky sandwich.
(2) Refried beans on the torta. I know this is a style, but it is not a good one.
(3) No veggies on the torta. I forget this when I order, and I am surprised when my sandwich only has meat, cheese, beans, avocado, and jalepeno on it. A little lettuce and tomato go a long way (and yes, tomato is a fruit, I know).
(4) The bread is huge, but something is not quite right. I can't say for sure, but maybe it is a little dry / too crumbly / too thick so that it doesn't heat properly.
I feel like I've given this place a fair share of chances, and I always regret coming here instead of Tortas Los Picudos. On my last visit here, I was the only guy in the joint, and TLP had a giant crowd waiting to order.
Honestly, I would give this place two stars, but the staff is very nice This review is based only on the tortas, I have not tried any of their other food.
SHARDS OF GLASS IN MY TORTA!!
Look, I loved this place, but in the middle of my last torta, there was a big 'ole hunk of glass that I bit down on (thankfully, not too hard). I loved their food, but I'm sorry man, a time with glass in your food is one time too many. This type of crap should never happen.
Proof positive of 24th St's latin cred: not one, but *two* great tortas places. Popularity-wise, LTG is sort of the Husker Du to TLP's R.E.M, which is really too bad. The tortas here may not have TLP's over-the-top sauce-oozing messiness, but they're still monstrously large and delicious (I went with the Pierna, aka roast leg of pork). And best of all, it's in an old converted diner that's uncannily reminiscent of St Francis Fountain a few doors down (must be another relic of 24th St's long-forgotten diner era?). So it's got far better atmosphere than TLP, and you can even get breakfast.
Still in love with carne asada torta. I usually call ahead so I don't have to wait. When you're in the mood for something filling; a torta from here will hit the spot.

Tortas! I love tortas. I didn't know what they were until I came to La Torta Gorda. Basically,… Read more »
I have eaten breakfast here many times but did not feel that my review would be justified until I tried La actual Torta Gorda. I elected to go with the Jr. Torta which was still plenty of food. Normally I have the veggie omelet, which is packed with about 10 different kinds of veggies. They also have 2 different (verde y rojo) delicious hot sauces that they make. It might help to speak spanish when ordering. The people who work there are super friendly and go out of their way to serve you in a quick and helpful manner.
I find it sad that there is a line out the door at the St. Francis Fountain diner a few doors down every morning just because it's the 'cool' place to eat. St. F's is also good (in an overwhelming fattening way) but it just shows that most people aren't very willing to try something new, even if it means waiting for 1/2 an hour before being seated. I on the other hand love trying new things, and that is why I love everyone's suggestions here on yelp.
This is one of my favorite spots so far in my new home. I've always been a fan of the Torta, but this place is a whole other level.
The first time I went in there it was during the lunch rush and it was quite busy. It took 15 minutes or so to get my sammich, which is excessive, but again, it was busy so I just chilled up at the counter. The lady who took my order was friendly despite being pretty overwhelmed with annoying customers....
On that note, let me just say that I hate white people. I know, I know...I'm white...but believe me, I hate myself too. If your new age hippy diet isn't in line with what's on the menu, go somewhere else. Don't waste the staff's time with a barrage of questions about the ingredients and then expect them to build you a custom tie-dyed torta for you and your fellow Berkeley faculty members. I'm a hater. I know.
Back to the Gorda. Fabulous. My first sammy was a carne asada and i was a happy little clam. One thing to note: They offer both "Junior" and "Regular" size tortas. Since I'm a wannabe, I order the regular and so far have not made it trhough more than 3/4 of a sandwich. Apparently I'm not a boy, but not yet a man.
My second trip I had to try the Cubano. What a crazy sandwich that thing is...pork, turkey , hot dogs...you name it. It was yummy and deadly all at the same time. I foresee many trips to the Gorda in my future. I think the next trip will involve a breakfast torta. Should be good times....
My girlfriend and I have a Saturday morning ritual. We wake up, blisteringly hungover, having consumed the better part of a bottle of Jack Daniels the night before, our mouths feeling like the cat shit in them, heads pounding away like a porn star. We lie there quietly and start whispering "Torta" to one another.
At some point one of us poor bastards actually has to get out of the bed and be the one to go downstairs and pick up our tortas. I'm not gonna lie to you--it's usually her because let's face it, she's whipped.
She comes back with our chorizo, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich or our torta con al pastor and two fat Gatorades and we hunker down on the couch for another useless Saturday.
I'm gonna tell you right now, there are very few things in life that one of their tortas cannot cure. Cancer? Maybe. Tourette's? Quite possibly. A hangover large enough to stop a herd of oxen in their tracks? Fuck yeah.
As a bonus, all of the guys who work here are SO NICE. If you're dining in though, the music will make your eardrums bleed.
I've tried a few torta places on 24th and this place is still my favorite. Especially the vegetariano torta. So, so good.
Never had a torta? Well, it's a delicious toasted sandwich with cheese, avocado, beans, jalapenos, tomatoes with a super tasty sauce to squeeze atop each bite.
This place has really great old decor and a nice back patio.
Try one. They're cheap, filling and yumtastic.
The best torta in the City.
I tried the junior milanesa (beef) with chipotle.
It was the perfect size! Just the perfect amount.
The bread they use is fantastic, the torta is constructed perfectly.
No drips of grease here.
Don't forget to ask for the home made hot sauce. It has the perfect amount of heat, enough to break a sweat but not enough to need to drink 2 liters of water. It has a sweet after taste too.
Next time, Regular size?
DONT EAT HERE THEY SERVE DOG! Kidding. But their takeout menu does say they offer "Toasted Beagles." Note: please don't ever change that! I'm cheesy enough that it makes me giggle every time.
Tasty tortas, probably my favorite on 24th,the junior is definitely big enough for one. I've also had the grilled vegetable and goat cheese sandwich, very nice. Sometimes though you got to be assertive to get attention. The ordering location is ambiguous and when it gets busy folks just spread down the counter, looking lost and hungry.
Late for work and need a delish sando to get you through until noon?
This is the spot. Fast service and quality.
Torta de pavo sin mayonessa.
Hands down the best tortas I've ever had. My favorite is chorizo and egg with chipotle. The bread is wonderful and different than most tortas I've had; must be made there or nearby, tasting very fresh. Also great bananna liquados. I especially love this place because it's rarely crowded. You could wait 1/2 an hour+ for a seat at the St. Francis (which I do love), or, get an awesome torta in 5 mins. They've got junior and large size tortas: get a junior or split a large with someone, unless you're _really_ hungry.
Yelp says it's good for dinner and lunch. Actually, it's great for breakfast too. Closes early, like around 8PM.
As many others mention, the folks in there are super nice.
Anyhow, I signed up for yelp just to give this place a great review. Don't pass it up.
If you find yourself in the heart of the mission and need some lunch, this is a great place to pick up a sandwich. I have been here countless times and they're very consistent. I can't vouch for the tortas, though my coworker swears by them, but their sandwiches are totally fresh---they don't even slice the meat until you order.
Be daring and order the "Julia special," (off-menu & my coworker's invention) chicken breast, cream cheese, chipotle peppers, pickles, and avocado--like I said, daring. They also have great veggie options, and one sandwich is big enough for 2 people to share...
Started my quest for the perfect torta last weekend. Decided to try this place first having passed by it many times and seeing some good reviews on here. Walked in and grabbed a seat at the counter. I asked the guys working there if I should get carnitas or pastor. Pastor was recommended so I ordered one with everything on it. Went for the large size since it was only like $2 more. It turned out to be a huge sandwich. It was tastey, although not the best pastor I've had.
Alright. I'll admit it. I was a sucker and paid for 7x7's June "Best of" issue. Nestled amongst the "best of"'s was La Torta Gorda. The bf is in love with tortas, and since I've never had one before, I decided this may be worth the trek out to the Mission. I kept this place filed away in the back of my brain for one of those days when we get tired of the restaurants around us in the Richmond District.
That day came last week and I draaaagged the bf and myself off our lazy butts and into my car, me driving and silently hoping that my pain-in-the-ass-ishness about going would be rewarded with a tasty dinner choice.
We were rewarded. Oh lordy, were we rewarded.
The place was empty, which seemed strange because of all the praise 7x7 and Yelpers were heaping onto it. The bf and I placed our orders (torta carnitas for me, torta carne asada for the bf) and sat down. The food came up fast and while we were waiting, 3 or 4 people (regulars, it seemed) came and went, all ordering food to go.
We bit into those tortas and mmmm.. heavenly. The cheese was good, the bread was wonderful, the meat.. meaty deliciousness. It was definitely worth the trek and assuaged my worries that I'd. be. made. a. fool. (Nobody ever likes to be the person who drags someone else to the lame party, the whack bar, or.. the bad torta place?)
HA! IN YOUR FACE, THESE TORTAS WERE AWESOME AND WORTH THE TRIP!
Ahem. So, in summary. Go here. Eat the tortas. If you are uber-hungry, get the regular. Otherwise the junior is a good size to get.
Funny side note: you can buy (order?) cup of noodles here!
Oh, oh, oh! I almost forgot: the staff is awesome. They were really nice and even handed us different hot sauce when they noticed that we were using the El Tapatio (sp?) sauce. "Oh, here you go. This hot sauce is better." Sweeeet!
I'm always torn on the weekends--do I continue to walk smugly by the wad of hipsters milling about outside the (lovely, but not-so-weekend-friendly) St. Francis, or do I pause to tell them they are missing out on a quick, delicious meal that will leave more change in their pockets?
Someday I suppose I'll try to clue them in, but until then, you yelpsters can enjoy the roomy environs in peace. The tortas are huge and are the best I've had here in the city:
the bread: grilled to perfection
the meat (my fave is Al Pastor): yumsville
other stuff: a nice schmear of refried beans, mayo, onions, queso, jalepenos
It adds up to sandwich perfection.
Their breakfast sandwiches are equally delicious -- they scramble your choice of meat (bacon, chorizo, ham) with some eggs and cheese and serve it on yet another tasty bread product. I recommend adding avocado for a maximum flavor celebration.
They also do fresh juice and will whip up a great espresso drink. Throw in a very clean and classy environment and some Futbol on the TV and you've got yerself one nice meal--without the wait and all the "ohmigodsdidyouseehowdrunkjimmywaslastnight?!?!?!"
Their tortas aren't have bad, pollo milanesa is slightly dry but they have other options for food that look pretty good. I've just always gotten the pollo milanesa because it comes with queso fresco and avocados. The bread is nice and soft and it goes great with the rest of the insides of the sandwich!
Not half bad. Yummy little sandiwches. Could be larger and cheaper, but still, not half bad. they open pretty early also which is nice when you want a veggie Torta for breakfast.
The Tortas are not as good as El Farolito down the street, but they are very interesting taste-wise. i like them, but not the best, but still yummy.
They delivers if you order over $15. to the Mission, Noe Valley and Bernal Heights. (415) 724 - 5399
La Torta = La BOMB....... I used to hit up this TORTA DELI right up the street. It was a small family owned jewel that didn't have a name. On my way there it seemed they went out of business so I took my business to this place
With a Torta craving on my mind the GF and I headed to La Torta Gorda. I must say the Carne Asada Torta was DELICIOUS. The soft grilled Torta bread topped with mexican cheese, re fried beans, onion and Jalapeno (no Mayo) for 6.95 is the best bargain for your buck. FYI the sandwich is huge. Perfect to share with a loved one
With a number of Torta place on 24th street I recommend you check this place out
What the other reviews have overlooked is the profoundly unclassifiable nature of this restaurant. It has 3 personalities.
First, it's a taqueria. It's in the south mission, everyone who works there is latino, they specialize in tortas, they have shelves behind the register with abuelito hot chocolate and ramen, and when I was there the whole back of the restaurant was filled with a sprawling familia latina, having quite a good time.
Second, it's a 1950s soda shop. You go in and you can sit down at the bar on a row of soft red cushioned stools. There are big Coca-Cola light fixtures that hang down from the ceiling. While I waited for my meal a well-curved white woman and her daughter came in to order a chocolate milkshake. For all I know they drank it with 2 straws, cheek to cheek, while listening to Paul Anka.
Third, it's a french cafe. They have those faux french liquor art posters everywhere. I ordered a chorizo and egg torta. The guy calls out "chorizo y huevo..?" so I go to retrieve it, expecting a torta similar to what I might find up the street at Taco Loco or Farolito. Instead I get an impeccably crafted masterpiece, a work of art, not a drop of grease anywhere, just good mexican ingredients tightly wrapped in paper, looking just like a $15 panini sandwich. A french one.
Maybe the best fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice of my life, too.
Im always hitting up this spot for a breakfast combo.... you get a full breakfast in which I usually order fried eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns and 2 pieces of wheat toast. the regular size tortas here are huge, and easily enough for 2 people. i recommend the chorizo & huevo torta, as well as my favorite, milanesa de pollo torta. the bread is fresh and lightly toasted. I recently tried their chicken sandwich as well and is delicious. 5 stars for this spot, its good for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
This little sandwich place is truly a hidden gem in the mission. My friend Tammy 'Tamara' introduced me to to their Torta sandwiches back when, and I've been fiending ever since. The hours are a little funny, so I can usually only catch this place during the weekend, but it's worth it. Everything I've tried there so far has been great: cheap prices, large portions, fresh meat, cheese, bread and all the rest - and the staff are so friendly and quick. When I was waiting for my mozarrella sandwich this weekend I noticed alot of Mission regulars ordering the chicken parmigana and I've made a mental note to try it next - but honestly, I have a feeling that their whole menu is "on point."
I have been a Torta Gorda fan since the first day they opend their doros a few blocks away..I go there for breakfast lunch and dinner...all types of tortas are great. i recommend the vegetarian, and the cubana....i also love thier chiles rellenos....great location, great customer service, clean, and above all, THE FOOD IS AWSOME.
