I've heard SO much about La Taquiza No. 2 that went I finally had the chance to go, I was beyond excited.

La Taquiza is a couple of blocks down from USC and is tucked away in a shopping center that boasts Viztango Cafe and a Spudnuts. At first glance, it seems like your typical Mexican food joint - the chalky green, brown and brick red color scheme of the restaurant, the salsa bar in the back and the ginormous menu that hangs above the heads of incoming patrons. But take a closer look and you'll realize that there are items on the menu that definitely distinguishes La Taquiza from your typical burrito and taco restaurant.

La Taquiza offers Korean short rib and pork burritos as well as shrimp and bay scallop burritos. But if you're not feeling too adventurous, the classic quesadillas and nachos are also on the menu.

I decided to get the shrimp burrito after much deliberation. I ordered, used a Yelp deal for La Taquiza to redeem a free soft drink and went over to the salad bar to stock up on some cilantro dressing and diced onions.

The burrito is HUGE. I had to use both hands or else the burrito would have collapsed. Nonetheless, it did stay together while I was eating it, thank goodness. But enough of the burrito's structure... onto the flavor!!

Flowing with enticing mexican spices and juiciness, I was won over after the first bite. I cannot begin to describe how wonderful that burrito was. The shrimp was plentiful and pleasantly plump. The flavors were outstanding. From time to time, I sprinkled some of the dressing and the onions onto the burrito and was delighted to find that these small add-ons made the burrito EVEN better.

I could have eaten another shrimp burrito, but I was just so darn full. The burritos are definitely worth the price because they're so huge and SO good.

I WILL BE BACK, NO DOUBT!!!!

YOM!  If you haven't tried La Taquiza's mulitas you need to go do that *right now*!

If you don't know what a mulita is, it's delicious cheese, guac, and greasy meat between two warm corn tortillas.  They are little bit bigger than street tacos so I'd recommend getting two or three.

The burritos here are also fantastic too so you can't go wrong.

I'd say the prices are on the upper end of one dollar sign, even though the place is still pretty divey in appearance.  They seem to be trying upgrade their look and menu though with new signs, decorations, and healthier menu items like salads with a slew of delicious (and exotic) dressings.

Working at USC there are relatively few good food options for being such a large and prestigious university.  There are a number of chain places that you tire of quickly so you really try to find the hole in the wall places, mom and pop joints, etc.  La Tequiza does the job.   It's not the greatest Mexican food in the world but it's not bad, it's one of the surprisingly few Mexican places you can walk to around campus and I enjoy going back when I need a Mexican fix.

I absolutely love the potato and egg burrito.  The thing is pretty huge, I've never finished it at one time.  I tell them no rice and minimize the beans, so the potato and egg really stands out.   I also really enjoy just the plain ole bean and cheese burrito, sometimes with grilled onions and jalapenos added inside.  The shrimp mulitas are as good as advertised.  I must say I have tried only a few things on the menu, but what I've gotten was always good.

I like their salsa bar, and if your eating in it's not a big deal to splurge on the various tasty condiments, but if you're taking out, occasionally it seemed they weren't happy that you were taking more when you asked for more of the little plastic take out cups.

Overall it's a clean place, the area is nicer, USC and the city it seems are trying to better up the area which is great if not long overdue.  The owner or maybe his son? is a cool guy and will shoot the shit with ya while in line and overall the staff seem nice, if only busy busy busy.

Definitely recommend if you're a student or in the area.

I was taken to La Taquiza #2 by a friend if mines nad we had lunch. I ordered the Milaneza Torta and he had a Carne Asada Burrito. He was a returning customer but this was my 1st time here. The place was clean and the menu was long. Not only do they have Mexican Food on the menu but i couldn't help notice Short Ribs items on the menu also...im a huge Kalbi Fan so i may have to try that next time. For now i had the usual Milaneza Torta. It was good...not dry or soggy, breading was just right. I'm picky about Milaneza but this one was good. Bread was a bit toasty, but after eating it was OK. Everything else i saw looked good so im gonna have to come back and try some more items on the menu...USC close

This is the best Mexican food place I have found near USC. Located a few short blocks north of campus, La Taquiza provides fast, delicious, and authentic Mexican food. From the outside the restaurant is small and easy to miss, but once inside it is actually quite large and filled with traditional Mexican decorations. The menu is quite extensive, relatively cheap, and their plates are huge. They also have a large fresh salsa bar. I think everything on their menu is delicious, and I especially love the fresh-squeezed juices they serve. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

As you can tell by now, I am kind of a fan of Mexican food. Hands down best Mexican in walking distance from USC (excluding food trucks). Their menu has a lot of variety for those who don't like run of the mill Mexican, but they have many of the traditional favorites that any Mexican lovers crave. Giant burritos, stuffing combo plates of rice, beans, and assorted tacos, and delicious horchata! Plus, they provide excellent catering. I planned a friend's birthday party and used La Taquiza as the caterer. The food was delicious, ready on time, and the price was reasonable.

I honestly feel like this the #1 BEST Mexican place in LA. Obviously I shoulD qualify that a little bit. Mexican should be tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tortas, beans &  rice with great salsa and al pastor. La Taquiza is ALL of that and more. The al pastor is the absolute best. The pickled carrots are spicy and firm. The burritos will never leave you hungry. They also have mulitas which you cannot get everywhere. These are basically two freshly made corn tortillas with your choice of meat and cheese in them. Delicious. Even their breakfast is great. I go almost every time I am downtown.  Love this place.

One of my closest friends used to go to USC grad, and due to his overwhelming food allergies, his dietary options are limited to Mexican food... and Mexican food. So we came here a lot.

Not that I'm complaining! The food here is delicious, and generous, and cheap. What else can you ask for when it comes to Mexican food? Competition for great Mexican food is tough in LA (which is, in my opinion, one of the best things about East LA), and this place holds its own.

My favorite Mexican meat is lengua, or cow tongue, which as all true foodies know is arguably the best cut of a cow. La Taquiza has great lengua. The best in LA? No, but good enough.

My one complaint is that service could be more friendly. A lot more friendly.

I was pleasantly surprised by the level of YUMMINESS of La Taquiza's food. I've known about this restaurant for the past two years but was too skeptical to give it a chance (ignorant san diegan right here).

On halloween night, just as I was about to walk over to Chipotle for free burritos wearing my duck beak on my nose, I was informed that ducks are not a farm animal... :-(
So onto plan B: get my mexican fix from la taquiza. I ordered a shrimp burrito and carne asada mulita.

This was my first mulita experience, and although I admit it was pretty delicious, I don't get the whole buzz about them. They were good but nothing to rave about...

The shrimp burrito on the other hand was no disappointment. Shrimp: fresh. Tortilla: soft and chewy. Rice: zesty. It might've even been the best shrimp burrito I've had :O

Plus, their salsa bar is presented so beautifully. And their salsa is very fresh! So glad I live a block from here. Even more glad I've finally found a much better alternative to Chanos and Freebirds :-)

This place is a local favorite, however it is a bit pricey which knocks them down a couple of stars.

Service is great, and the food taste good.  Not the best Mexican food in Los Angeles by any means, but I can see why the folks in the area are scared to venture out to "sketchy" places where more awesome Mexican food can be found.

Great Mexican food spot if you are in the area, and by far better than Chanos across the street.

My Boyfriend asked me if  i was hungry, and i thought um not that much,  so he pulled up to this place right by my school called "La Taquiza", He ordered me a mulita and i fell inlove!!
It is like a quesadilla, Two tortillas as in a sandwhich style, it has whichever choosing of meat you  prefer, melted cheese over the meat, and  a pinch of fresh avacado and then they have a side bar with all the extras you would like to throw on top!!!
However the staff is amazing and the environment is appreciated:)

My name is Hugo C. and I'm a torta fiend.

I'm sorry, I just can't help but be a huge fan of the passionate love child that was born of a taco and a sandwich after what was sure to be an alcohol-fueled night at the (salsa) bar. Rightfully so, I opt for a torta nine times out of ten, since most Mexican joints treat tortillas as a simple vessel for the meat in a taco, never a valuable part of the flavor equation.

Not even the crusty bolillo could save this torta from falling flat. The al pastor's marinade of dried chiles wasn't lip-smacking in the slightest. Perhaps the stale chips could save the dish? Not quite. It was a plate full of mediocrity from start to finish.

I thought that I didn't like mexican food until I came here. Now I love it.

Sometimes I find myself here craving their seafood quesadilla or their steak and chicken fajita. Actually, I like everything I have ever ordered here.

I have never had refried beans as good as La Taquiza's, but I don't eat a lot of Mexican... Anyway, give me a combination with beans and rice and I will be beyond full.

Generally, I pay $11.19 for my meals, and I have a lot of trouble finishing them. Not what I might expect from a place that looks like it serves quick and cheap meals, but the food is good and the salsa is fresh. I kind of like that from the outside it looks like a hole-in-the-wall joint, and inside the walls are hand-painted with art. It's somewhere I'd hang out or take my family for a solid meal, but not really someplace I would go if I wanted somewhere fancy.

I actually like this place a little bit better than El Cholo (which is pretty damn good already) just because El Cholo is a bit more pricey and their refried beans don't hold a candle to La Taquiza's. I'm sure El Cholo knocks the living socks off of La Taquiza in the alcohol and atmosphere departments, but in terms of good, solid, reasonably-priced Mexican food--La Taquiza is the way to go.

Although I graduated from UCLA in 95, our family lived across the street from USC for a good portion of my childhood.  There was just no way that my parents could afford to send us to school there even if I wanted to go. (I never considered it).

La Taquiza is your absolute best bet for food in the culinary wasteland surrounding this retarded campus.  My absolute favorite dishes here are the chicken fajitas burrito, the al pastor mulita, and the al pastor nachos.  The chorizo is also wonderful in the mulita or in a taco as well, and it is cooked to order.

The corn tortillas are homemade, and are so good that they will make your toes curl.  You can't go wrong with anything they are wrapped around.  The guacamole is fresh and while not made to order, it is pretty damn good.   The orange pureed salsa is the best one, hands down.

My only complaint is that the owner is very stingy with the salsa to go.  He told me one time that my burrito did not need any salsa because they had already put some inside.  Well what a moronic thing to say to someone who patronized this place on a frequent basis and brought many friends here.  Does this bunghole think it is Father's Office or something?

Although the plain tacos were not that interesting, and in fact a bit below average, I am still in afterglow (days later!) regarding the shrimp tacos and al pastor mulita.

Hands down, some of the best I've had in LA!!!! What a great find, can't wait to go back!

Will say that the sandia agua fresca was a twee overly-sweet, but quaffable.

After waiting over 20 minutes for a small order (and asking if it was coming), a worker gave me my two carne asada mulitas PLUS a third one for free for the wait.  I was impressed and surprised by this great service! (After, of course, the poor service and forgetful mind of the cooking staff as they took my order verbally and then proceeded to forget to make it.)

The mulitas themselves were definitely tasty, but not worth the $2.99/ea price tag.  The lack of stars actually comes from the cleanliness of the place.  I wasn't expecting the cleanest, most state-of-the-art location in a small strip mall on Figueroa near USC, but I also wasn't expecting to be fearful of catching a disease when entering a bathroom to wash my hands before a meal either.  The tables were "pseudo-clean" and the floors and mats looked like they hadn't been cleaned from the day before...

The restroom though...  You can always judge the management of a restaurant on how well they design and maintain their restrooms...  The Men's restroom is/was absolutely disgusting.  One of the worst I've been in ever.

This place is A-OK.  A little over-priced yet tasty, and dirty.

Hand pressed tortillas made to order right in front of your eyes. SOLD!

Bomb DOT com Cheese Enchiladas. Seriously these are craveable. I'm kind of pissed I only got one.

Horchata oh sweet Horchata how your large size filled me up quick but you better believe I drank every last bit.

Al Pastor on the spit being sliced off to order, yes puhleaze!

Mulitas you say. Never heard of them until here and I say this dish of meat of your choice, cheese and guac sandwiched between two tortillas are a must order.

Endless choices at the salsa bar. Cups are at the front counter where you pick up your food.

I'll be back soon for sure. Maybe even this week. Another great find thanks to the Y-E-L-P!

Randomly came here before my college tour of SC my senior year of high school and five years later I'm still coming back. In my opinion, La Taquiza has the best Mexican food in the area, and for South Central Los Angeles, I feel like that says something. If you're looking for fancy table service you won't find it here, but their enchiladas rancheros combo is to die for, especially with rice, refried beans, and pico on the side. All that and a good sized soda for a little over ten bucks. Also a firm believer that La Taquiza has the best fountain coke around - maybe it's made with real sugar? Either way, La Taquiza is my favorite place to eat around the USC area and they have friendly service and plenty of tables so even when it's crowded there is still always room to sit with your friends for a cheap, fun dinner.

Want Korean style taco's without the wait or waiting under the sun, go here.

This is my second time here and because of a coupon from CampusCred we got to save some $ while ordering enough to fill our bellies.

    Our order:
3 enchiladas (1 chicken, 1 al pastor, 1 carne asada) combo plate with refried beans & chips and salsa
2 mulitas (1 al pastor and 1 carne asade)

Mulita, whats a mulita you ask? They say its a quesadilla on steroids, YUM! You pick your choice of meat, they top it with melted cheese and throw some good ol guacamole on top! Don't know what to order or if it's your first time here I recommed the MULITA!

Now on to the enchiladas, what's not to love about something drenched is good enchilada sauce, it was a nice change of pace to the mulitas.

Both of our orders were good, if in the area I'll be coming back.

Alright yelpers you guys dropped the ball at this place. I am well aware that this is a USC hangout spot and that the campus is down the street but that is no excuse for giving a good rating to bad food.  So based on all the great reviews on this place I stopped by this Mexican restaurant to see what all the hype was about. I ordered the Korean BBQ ribs and the Kimchi was crazy overpowering were I couldn't taste the meat. I have had this combination off of a truck that was why I chose it and both my wife and I hated it.  Then I ordered there nachos which was the worst I have ever had the chips were so thin that they could not hold up to the toppings. Also I am a nacho cheese sauce fan so the real cheese that gets hard quick doesn't help there rating but not their fault, but the lack of flavor and the weak enchilada sauce was just not working. Then I finished off this bad experience by ordering their Mulitas which were so plain that they just let me down and they were tiny too. I definitely suggest people drive down to East Los Angeles and pick a taco truck and find out what real Mexican food taste like.

    Overrated?
It was ok, but def. not worth the drive. If your in the area I suppose its good for a quick bite, but nothing to rave about. The tacos al pastor sucked. (Maybe I'm just spoiled by the real deal I often get in my trips to Mexico) I've yet to find a place that serves a good taco al pastor, if you know where please let me know. I did have a mulita as well, again, it was ok. The taquitos were prob the best item, pretty good.
I dont think I will not be coming back.

i wanted to come here after hearing it was ranked as one of la's best tacos. OVERRATED. im sorry but maybe my expectations were way too high but the carne asada was just not as good as King Tacos and it was cold.

i would come here if i wanted a quick lunch and had no other choice, but other than that i would definitely not mind driving a couple miles down to go to kingtaco.

Yumm took me forever to actually end up eating at this place! But those mulitas are amazinggg. I got 2 carne asada mulitas plus all those salsas / sauces on the side and that was perfect for me. Definitely planning on coming back and trying more.

Plus Mayor (on FourSquare) gets a free mulita. GUESS WHO'S MAYOR?? Wooo!!!

I called ahead to ask if they had a specific football game and they said "yea we have all of them" Me assuming they had ordered the NFL network, we drove over and ordered food.  Come to find out, they didnt have the game I wanted to watch, playing.  To make the afternoon even better, I ordered a tuna burrito and they made me a salmon one. The guacamole is good but I dont think I'll be back.

OMG! The wet burritos de al pastor make me go into a Tazmanian Devil frenzy!!!

The burritos are huge and filled with the meat of your choice, beans, onions, cilantro, and taste oh so good. The meat is cooked to perfection.

The mulitas are also excellent and filling for being so small. I like to get two of shrimp.

The fresh aguas are a must. My favorite is the agua de fresa but the agua de limon is very close behind it.

The salsa bar is abundant and you can not only choose from many different salsas but there are fresh sliced carrots, jalapenos, lemons, and other condiments up for grabs.

Parking is tough so try not to do go during lunch hour or be sure to carpool with a friend. It's in a crowded little shopping center so beware when parking your Bimmer.

You can dine in (lots of seating inside) or take out if you're in a hurry and they're still not cheap on the portions. Calling ahead is a great idea too.

    Buen Provecho!
