Best burrito on Mission Street. They aren't huge, but they are perfect.
The beef is so well seasoned and cooked. Never tough or chewy or bland. They don't put rice in the burritos, so that flavors come across that much stronger. I get it with everything except sour cream. You can eat the whole burrito, and thanks to the no rice inside, you feel full without feeling bloated.
And for as busy as they get, they have their system down and you still get your order in quick and the food ready fast.
The only downside is that they only take cash. -

Some good friends of mine that live close to La Taqueria, introduced me to this place of deliciousness. Their tacos are uh-mazing to say the least. I've been here two times now and both times I have left a happy happy customer. I believe both times I ordered one chicken taco and one veggie, both with guacamole Their salsa is super delicious, so if you get your food to-go, remember to throw some on before you head out.
The only downfall of eating in is that it gets super crowded around feeding time, so it might be best to get it to go and enjoy it at home. Their chips and salsa are delicious too if you're considering a little something extra on the side. Overall, La Taqueria is easy on the wallet and simply delicious. -

Third up in my continuing quest to give the Mission burrito a chance, I stopped at La Taquiria. I mean, I can't exactly call The Mission Burrito Experiment complete after having visited only two burrito joints, right?
To give some background, I was new to the Mission burrito scene and needed to decide if I like Mission burritos or not by visiting a few of the burrito joints in the Mission.
So, I got as close to my standard burrito as possible; carne asada burrito, with sour cream, cheese, avocado. This was a step down from both El Faralito and Taqueria Cancún. It was very juicy and dripped everywhere, but juice did not mean taste! The meat was not very flavorful at all.
But, I'm not going to let this temporary roadblock stop me, so stay tuned for the next installment of The Mission Burrito Experiment! -

Vegetarian taco & salsa was good, but the tangerine juice was amazing!! Seriously, amazing.

As the birthplace of the Mission burrito, San Francisco cannot (or will not) escape the debate over what to put in a burrito. It's similar to the NY/Chicago pizza debate. I don't choose sides in either debate; I love them all.
La Taqueria doesn't fit the typical Mission burrito mold of a massive burrito filled with everything that costs about a dime. And for that, I love them. Many taquerias serve food that is interchangeable and forgettable, but La Taqueria is unique in their simplicity.
I've been eating here for over 25 years, and tried everything on the menu. And I know everything is fresh because I once saw a cow's head in the kitchen that was being picked clean. Yes, I am recommending their cabeza tacos, which are rich and moist and delicious. I also love their chorizo; it has the perfect balance of spicy and sweet, and I know of no better cure for a hangover than the chorizo burrito and a quesadilla. Of course everything needs to be doused in the delicious green sauce.
For those who complain about the value, go down the street and buy yourself a flavorless burrito the size of a newborn. I'll stick with the quality and deliciousness of La Taqueria. -

I'm a total fan!! It's crowded at all hours, but the line moves fast and the tables turnover pretty quickly. Two chicken tacos (tender, tasty chicken, mmm!), chips and salsa (crispy chips with ultra fresh salsa, loooove) and a strawberry fresca (refreshing, slurped it all up, healthy, tangy, tasty, looooove). I would come back in heartbeat - no wonder this place is in all the books, magazines, guides and Food Channel TV shows. Loooooove.

Came here for dinner on a Tuesday night. There were a couple of parking spaces near by.
I got the cabeza with cream and avocado no cheese burrito . Meat was very tender and excellent with the hot sauce at the table.
Then I ordered the chicken taco which comes with a soft and crunch shell. Chicken was ok bur after using the sauce from the table it was good.
The chips an salsa were excellent very fresh!!
I would come here again to try the cabeza and carne asada tacos. -

I want to eat here daily. Every year it closes during Christmas, which is great for the employees (I presume), but sad for me because I miss the taco's so much.
Eat in. Enjoy the Tomatillo salsa at your table and the friendly atmosphere of the service. If I'm feeling hungry I'll order two chicken tacos, one crispy, one soft and one with guacamole and cheese.
If you're lucky a vendor will come through the front glass door and sell you dessert. Last time I bought a coconut candy. -

I was on a mission to eat at as many places on 7x7 in one day and came here post-breakfast snack at Tartine. It was packed, around noon, obviously pointing out how popular this place is for lunch. Many of the customers were Mexican, again making one believe the tacos have got to be good!
I ordered a few carnitas tacos (as recommended by 7x7) and it was tasty! I was def not disappointed. I will need to get use to eating corn tortillas as opposed to flour tortillas (more authentic). -

Alright all of you San Franciscans looking for your mexi-fix...Let me put an end to the age old question, "Who has the best tacos in the mission?" This place is my favorite taco joint in the mission bar none.
I expected to find this place OKAY at best. On the contrary, the carnitas tacos were knock your socks off good. Be sure to get them EXTRA CRISPY (for those who have had it before, this is a lot like 'Nick's Way' from Nick's Crispy where they use two shells separated by a layer of cheese and the inner shell is deep fried to add a crispy crunch). The carnitas are a no brainer win in my book (and I'm usually a carne asada girl when it comes to my burritos) but the carne asada has a good smokey flavor to it and is still delicious.
Basically, if you think you have tried all there is worth trying in the Mission but you haven't been here....go. Its a bit on the more expensive side, but hey this is San Francisco. Worth the showcase on the SF 7x7 list, and definitely on my top list as well... May have a generic name, but not a forgettable generic taqueria.
PS Try the Agua Frescas, you will not be disappointed! The perfect sweet to compliment the savory....Listed in: Cheap Eats

In my opinion, tacos are the ultimate fast food. Fresh, hot and prepared on the fly, wrapped and ready to eat. As fast as any drive through, you can get in and out and on your way with a real meal.
Sure La Taqueria is popular, but there is a reason behind the line. The tasty food that awaits you. I waited for no longer than 2 minutes before I ordered and another 2 minutes before my taco was on my table and ready to eat.
I order my carne asada taco accompanied by a Modelo Especial. Extra Jalapenos on the side, free of charge. Perfect dinner before heading out for the night. -

I only posted 1 start because of my first experience with upset stomach and severe diarrhea after eating the delicious carnitas burrito with guacamole. Don't know if it was the pork or the guacamole. I've been here many times before and never had a digestive issue. I just want to post this to make sure everyone is safe and they're not getting to lax (no pun...).
I would love to be able to go back without any worries. -

The best carnitas taco, carnitas burrito and strawberry fresca, I have ever had. They don't stuff their burritos with rice. Matter of fact, there is no rice at all. Just lots of delicious meat, salsa and beans.
And you can get the tacos or burritos crispy! -
Review from Jenny Z.
Occasionally, I have the most bizarre cravings. For awhile, guacamole and authentic Mexcian food has constantly been crawling in the back of my mind. So when my friend and I were in the mission district, we both insisted on satiating ourselves with some real deal Mexican food. To our luck, La Taqueria was still open and so we quickly took a seat and ordered before the kitchen closed. And HOMG, their food tasted AMAZING. I'm partially torn between whether we were just hungry and cold or if the food was as heavenly as I had imagine...probably a combination of both.
We ordered the chicken burrito, tacos and chips with salsa and guacamole. Their salsa was ok, there was a little bit of onion overdose, but the guacamole was fresh, chunky and flavorful. And let me tell you, their burritos are no joke. It was just straight up stuffed with freshly stewed and shredded chicken with beans...none of that chipotle stuff (don't get me wrong, I like my chipotle too!). I thought it was awesome that it oozed deliciousness when my friend cut open it. I ordered the vegetarian burrito, because there weren't any fish tacos. However, I was disappointed to find that it only contained beans, cheese and salsa...guess I expected grilled vegetables. I didn't complain because it was still well made. Overall, La Taqueria is a wonderful family own restaurant, filled with authentic, soulful mexican food and a happy hip crowd. Moreover, the owner really cares about his customers, he nearly went by every table to chat and joke with everyone! -

By far the BEST chicken burrito in the city. I get mine with added guacamole. No rice in this place, which is how burritos are supposed to be. Solid every time!

This place has been on our list for the longest time, and boy was it worth the wait! We loved this place. I ordered the Carnitas and Choriso Burrito while the girlfriend ordered the Carnitas and Carne Asada Burrito. Let me just say this: These guys know their way around meat! The Carnitas was so juicy and full of flavor that it practically exploded in your mouth. I recommend it to anyone who is a serious pork fan. I figured that if they could do Canirtas well they could do the Chorizo well too and I was not wrong. Everything here I'm sure is fantastic and I cannot wait to try it.
The price was definitely a bit steep for a taqueria, but I'll be damn, I was pretty impressed! -

Went here today food was excellent but the service was absolutely terrible. Went and ordered 4 tacos amongst my boyfriend and I, the lady at the front asked if we wanted guacamole and sour cream and we said yes because usually that is always included on tacos, but when we went to order the lady charged us $36 for 4 tacos and 2 beers. Apparently if you agree to getting guacamole and sour cream it ups the price of your $3 taco to $6, plus they don't even tell you it's an extra $3 for those things. When we asked her why it was so expensive se gave us extreme attitude, which in my opinion shouldn't be given to paying customers. Anyways, there are much better tacos places in the mission so if I were you I'd go somewhere else like el farolito where you can get a way better meal for less than half the price. Only giving two stars because the food was decent

I saw a fairly good sized line at this place so I thought I'd check it out. Upon entering I saw multiple awards on the walls from places such as Zagat so I thought this had to be pretty legit. Let me tell you this Carne Asada Burrito I'm eating right now is to die for whatever they put on the meats is delish, I very highly recommend this place.

I can only compare this place to Taqueria Cancun (the only other taqueria I've tried in the Mission), but I would highly recommend Cancun over this place any day. For the exact same order (1 carnitas taco, 1 carne asada taco, 1 order of chips and salsa, and 1 aqua fresca), I paid more ($11 vs. $6), had to wait in line for 10 minutes and struggle to find a table, and I thought the tacos were less flavorful. Cancun was also more colorful in decor and the workers seemed to be having a great time (the workers at La Taqueria weren't unfriendly -- they just didn't seem as cheerful, at least the day I was in).
The melon aqua fresca was absolutely delicious! :) -

There's not a whole lot to say aide from "I haven't had better burritos in San Francisco."
And I've been looking...
First, everything is fresh and made in front of you. Their turnaround is so great that nothing stands open in the air. In fact, there's always a line, though they are so efficient that I've never waited more than 5 minutes.
Second, it's the only place I know that doesn't stuff the burrito with rice. No fluff, just the good ingredients.
Third, while it's quite the bare bones place, the clientele is really diverse and always friendly. In addition to the small table (for 2 or 4) there are a couple long, community tables and which folks always share. Makes the experience so much more interesting.
And last, it's right in the middle of the mission, just a block off the 24th Street BART station, and a block from the hip valencia corridor. -

Been eating here since the 90s ... never thought to write a review but after recent visit a table of us were commenting how incredible it was the place had maintained such excellence for so long.
Best tacos bar none.
I've occasionally ordered a burrito, which is good, but there is no comparison to the tacos and the amazing corn/meat/avocado flavor ratio. Add the home made verde sauce and POW. Nirvana. And excellent agua frescas.
Only negative to mention is these tacos are getting a little pricey. But still worth every cent. And they are not open very late, even on weekends. -

A surefire place to "wow" out-of-towners and make them feel authentic.
This joint is simultaneously 1. in the Mission and 2. not overwhelmed by "local, organic, sustainable" gentrification hype. There are plastic utensils here that don't get composted. The trash is labeled "Trash" instead of "Landfill :'-( ". Sometimes people speak Spanish here instead of English. Shit is getting real.
However, this joint is also featured as the "Best Burrito" in their Lonely Planet guides so Washington D.C. natives will feel dangerous but also safe.
As an out-of-towner, I love going to the Taquería to remind myself that I am a "Real Californian" now, obnoxiously/enthusiastically yelling "GRACIAS!!!!!!" in my best accent when my food is ready.
Actual tips that are helpful:
*Getting avocado in your burrito is worth it.
*Getting chips and salsa for the table is also worth it. The salsa is chunky and sometimes the chips are warm.
*Carnitas is the best burrito, hands down. They do the spices wonderfully, and the meat is tender.
*Agua fresca (in multiple fruit flavors) cuts the spiciness if you turn up your burrito heat, but also get a water because the sugar is overwhelming.
*Cash only.
*Mission Pie is very close by for dessert and is also in the LP guidebook (again, dangerous/safe). -

South Gate, CA
Heat tortilla, put meat, beans, pico de gallo, avocado, and sour cream, serve. Once you take off those extras that kill the taco, you come to learn that the asada has no flavor to hold its own, the carnitas is actually good, and yet the possibility of enjoying a good taco on its own is destroyed by all of these extras.
Chips were good and much better than other taquerias in the Mission District. Asked for the spiciest hot sauce they had and it was actually a mild sauce. Horchata was on the watery side. -
Review from Tanya N.
I heard about this place while watching the Cooking Channel and then a friend of mine mentioned that it's the best burrito place in the city so I came to this place when I was in the area.
This place was packed with almost all of the seats taken. I had the chicken burrito which was really well seasoned and moist but the downside to it is that since the chicken is sitting in a watery sauce, the burrito becomes soggy. By the end of it, the sauce leaked through a fold in the foil and all over my hands and tray. The burrito was worth the mess though. My friend had the beef one which wasn't a mess and it made me a bit envious of how he could eat it to neatly.
People are in and out of this place so while it's busy, a seats become available pretty quickly.
Great burrito place - I believe in the hype. -

San Francisco has more then it's fair share of taquerias and I feel like I've been to a majority of them. To say the least La Taqueria is the best taqueria in the city and as far as I know in the state. It's a bit pricy but worth it.

Best taco I've ever had, was at La Taqueria. I'm not one of those extreme taco lovers, but the Carnitas Tacos here are DELICIOUS.
Nothing fancy here--soft tortilla, shredded pork, fresh salsa, cheese, sour cream...but so good.
It's a very simple, small shop. You order, then seat yourself on tables with benches. Consistent crowd, but service is fast.
It's a little on the pricier side, compared to other shops (and there are many, many of them in the neighborhood). My husband believes there are better shops that are cheaper. But I disagree. -
Review from Rose A.
Food is pretty good but sure is expensive!
I like that they have several different agua frescas (strawberry, mango, watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple & tamarind). They of course have horchata but they also had a drink called Jamaica something (hibiscus tea, I think). I had the Tamarindo agua fresca. It was okay...seemed a little water down.
I had a Carnitas taco ($3.50). I thought one taco may not be enough so I also got a Carne Asada taco. I added sour cream for 50¢ and avocado for $1.20 (per taco). The tacos were really tasty - meat moist & flavorful. The tacos are larger than I expected so I would've been okay with just one.
My husband had a Carne Asada burrito ($6.50), which he liked.
They have a green chile sauce, which was good...but La Vic's orang sauce is better.
Apparently, their tacos & burritos have meat, cheese, beans & salsa. Extra toppings are available for an additional cost. However, if you don't add anything, and ask them to hold the beans (so just meat, cheese & salsa), they charge you $1.20 to keep the beans. Am I the only one that thinks it's crazy to charge for an ingredient that they're not gonna give you!?!
FYI - Cash Only -

This review is for the burritos. I ordered the carne asada but it was just not good at all. It lacked flavor or that charred/grilled taste. Their burritos come with meat, salsa, guac, sour cream or cheese. Are we missing something? Rice!!!???!?!! Apparently they don't sell rice at all. A taqueria without rice. I couldn't fathom it. Mine had meat, salsa, and guac. It was just a tasteless wet mess. I think rice is an essential ingredient in a burrito (except for a breakfast burrito). It soaks up some of the juices of the meat or salsa. Considering the countless taquerias in the Mission, I'm probably not coming here again.

The guacamole is fresh and yummy. The cartitas is super tasty.

Really?? Such low scores??? Really??
This was THE burrito before Poncho Villa. This was THE burrito before any other burrito. This is a classic. No fuss. No muss.
A true original in the Mission and what every burrito aficionado should try at least once...because this is where the burrito was born.
Dont expect the place to spic and span. Because thats not what it is.
Your there fore the yumminess and authentic flavor. Not the decor.
A tru classic and tru favorite! -

1. Bring cash
2. Order your burrito 'crispy' which is briefly tossed on the grill.
3. Mix carne asada and the pollo (blanco), skip the sour cream & cheese.
4. Grab a stool outside
5. Enjoy.
FANTASTIC place... been a fan for years. But I don't eat here or any Latin food too regularly because if I did, it'd defeat putting 40 miles a week on my sneakers.
Good treat. Just don't get too addicted... -
