New Record:  Three times in one week.

2009 was probably the least amount of time spent in SF Bay Area since 1996.

And guess what I missed the most:  Fresh, simple, authentic Mexican food.

Best carnitas tacos in the bay area.  Forget "Mission Burritos", this is the real deal.

Are you the kind of person who thinks of chips and salsa are a meal, ie not a side/app?  Go here.  Conveniently located off 101 on the way home from SFO I might add.

Add a 1.5L Jarritos Toronja and you're in biz.

La Tapatia, I still love you! But i had to knock down one star because I saw a scary cockroach in the store.

Having previously worked in a resturant almost 10 years, i know that food places are prone to buggers. Plus your food is sooo damm good, I have to turn a blind eye.

Eats: Super Burrito w/Carne Asada. NOMNOM sooo good.
Super Taco with Pastor. NOMNOM i hate pork but love this.
Nachos (in the bag) crispy and fresh YUMM

I love you La Tapatia, until next time!

Pretty good damn good.
I took the lovely wife here in our search for a good local burrito and well as long as we don't get sick tonight =) I think we've found it.
She had a veggie burrito and I had the carne asada, both were excellent.
Only thing that sucks is we had to drive home before enjoying them.

OH MY GOD This place was straight revelations status on what a good burrito should be like. gahhhhhhh i want one right nowwwwwww

everything inside tasted stupid fresh and the tortilla was nice and thin, strong enough to keep all the delicious contents of my burrito inside while not being chewey and a barrier to my enjoyment of said burrito.

the torta was no joke either, they used french bread and packed the sucker with so much goodness that they had to hollow out the top of the bread to make room for the special sauce (i don't wanna know) and carnitas and beans and sourcream and salsa, and amazing.

The bar has been raised my friends, the bar has been raised.

gahhhh i want some right nowwwww

This place has the best burritos I have ever had.  I love that they put the carne asada and al pastor on the grill for a few minutes before putting the meat into the tortilla.

They have homemade chips and salsa that are so addictive that I made a trip over there just to get a quart of the salsa, which I finished in two days!!  Hey, salsa is healthy - only 10 calories per tbsp!!  Not sure about the tortilla chips though...

What I also love about the place is that you can buy their different meats ala carte.  I plan on ordering from here for a party I am hosting next month.  Homemade meats, tortillas, chips, salsa, rice - just the perfect way to make my guests happy!  Sorry it just won't be homemade by me!  I will take credit for the homemade margaritas though!

I have to agree with my friend Jennifer on this one. La Tapatia has always been my favorite but this last visit will be just that... my last.

The burrito was leaking the liquid from the chicken & whole beans from every angle which in turn made the lettuce soggy and gross. I had three bites of the bland chicken and couldn't eat anymore due to the sloppy mess I was making. Sad, because I used to love this place.

I have spent years trying to find a burrito that comes close to Ramero's & Sons in Alameda.  I was taco jeff and reviewed about 40 places on a web site long before there was a yelp. Darn I missed out on retiring early.

This place is one of the few that does.  If you love burritos try it out...a destination burrito.

[I didn't make it down there, but my hen pen co-worker Mimi B. was generous enough to share half a carnitas burrito.]

I've got a deep and abiding love for carnitas.  One could say that it's an addiction not unlike an addiction one might have for something like crack or candy.  I just can't wait to get a piece of those sweet and juicy morsels of pork in my mouth.  You can trust me when I say I've tried every single last place in town that serves or claims to serve the best carnitas in town.

Without a doubt La Tapatia has the best carnitas I have EVER tried.  I live in the northern part of the city and sometimes when that craving strikes I'll just drive down into South San Francisco and pick up a bag and dive right in.

Oh yeah.  They have other stuff.  Its probably good.  But frankly I only get the carnitas.

Can't go wrong when you step into the tortilla shop that distributes their fresh tortillas to grocery stores in the area. This place is as authentic as it gets.

I go with the Super Carnitas Burrito, no lettuce and it does me right everytime. This is a hole in the wall though, so be prepared...

Best Carne Asada Burrito ever!

Here's what sets these guys apart from all the other Mexican joints.

1)  They source their own ingredients.
2)  They make everything in-shop.
3)  Everything is fresh.
4)  Everything is made to perfection

I've been coming here for as long as I can remember and no other burrito....except for a hole-in-the-wall in San Diego, can beat the one at this joint.

This is the BEST Mexican food for the price in SSF.

In my mind, it's the Mexican version of the Little Lucca, but with Mexican food.

You get even more for what you pay for. Best quality ingredients.

Burritos, nachos, and quesadillas are straight CRACK!

I just came back from the airport and wanted something different. I yelped and found this place. This place was right across the street from the library. And when I got inside there were 4 people in front of me ready to order. While ordering, another 6 people joined the line.

There was one vegetarian option in a Mexican market. I ended up ordering the super burrito with chicken since it seem very popular.

There were 2 guys making the burrito. The first was the supervisor, in charge of the meats and what kind of beans. The second was the lettuce and salsa guy.  I told the 1st guy I what I wanted and the second guy thought I wanted a regular. What this means is the tortilla that they use is exactly the same, including the amount of meat and beans. So the $1.00 extra that one pays for in a super burrito is more lettuce, avocado and salsa.

My super burrito came out to be $6.06 without nachos. So price wise isn't super cheap but a good value for what one is paying for.

I have been here several times now and the food is always excellent.  They have the best burritos, tacos and chips around.  Their meat, my favorites are the carne asada and pastor, makes whatever you want (burrito, taco etc) very tasty.  They don't have anywhere to eat inside, which makes it great when you want to eat at home but don't feel like cooking.  I highly recommend this place to anyone who likes good Mexican food!

La Tapatia is extremely popular with people from Milbrae, San Bruno, SSF, Colma, Daly City, and even San Francisco! That last one is impressive, especially seeing as San Francisco is the home of the... well, San Francisco burrito.

I've been going there for a while, and I must say that these people know how to make fresh burritos. While I don't exactly like my chicken in strips and flavored the way they make it, I can appreciate that you can TELL that it's fresh and the way chicken should look... not all chopped up in cubes and whatnot. To be honest, and my friends have also noticed this, the quality has gone down a bit in recent years, but nevertheless, La Tapatia is still the go-to taqueria in South San Francisco. Maybe even in the cities mentioned above as well, excluding San Francisco.

Idk. but it's definitely worth a try!

La Tapatia is always busy when I pass by so I stopped by on a Sat afternoon to try some tacos.  The place had a line at 3pm which says something.  Besides the taqueria menu, they sold all of their prepared meats by the pound as well as salsas and sauces too which I found quite appealing and easy for anybody who's throwing a party or going to a potluck.  My regular carnitas taco tasted good with lots of meat packed into it.  However, their version of a regular was "lettuce, pico de gallo, hot sauce, and sour cream."  Usually, I expect onions and cilantro and that's about it but here, they gave a little more and although too late, I did see the onions and cilantro near the end of the assembly line.  If you want it done a particular way, then make sure to tell them or else they'll do it the usual way.

The wait can be a while but it's a solid choice and much faster to get your food than any other restaurant along Grand Ave.

Was recently at a party catered by La Tapatia and I haven't had this quality of Mexican food in a while.  Delicious beans and rice, awesome carne asada, and some of the best salsa and guacamole I've tried in a while.  Their chips are great too (not greasy like other places) and they pack a lot of crunch.  It's a little out of the way for me but well worth it!

I always get a Super Burrito with Carnitas! This burrito is everything I can ask for. Big, flavorful, juicy. After I'm done, I am one happy camper! Very. Very. Satisfying.

La Tapatia also caters, and you get your money's worth, I'm telling you. Everyone at your party will be happy. And then they'll ask you where you got the amazing food from. Ahhh, La Tapatia never lets me down.

Being from South City you know and respect La Tapatia for what it is... I have been going my entire life, my mom used to take me when I was young (and for an irish immigrant to be obsessed with burritos they gots be bomb right?) I was in LA a few years ago at a comedy fest and this one comedian actually TALKED ABOUT LA TAPATIA and its authenticity saying that you walk in and youll find chickens running around the shop...

Well, there's no live chickens, but it is pretty authentic and absolutely DELICIOUS. Some people are not a fan of lettuce in their burritos, but I absolutely LOVE IT.. I get mine with everything-- guac, sourcream, meat, lettuce, hotsauce, cheese, rice,b eans--omg. i need to stop because my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Sad part to this story-- now I'm in NYC.. and HAVE YET to find a real burrito =(  When I was back in CA for 3 days La Tapatia was first on my hit list to see!... First La Tapatia, then my parents...

I work in South City, and when "da crew" of us are having one of "those days" where we don't care about getting much done "with the rest of the afternoon" we head to Tapatia. I can't believe I haven't written about this place before since I've been there at least 20 times in the last year, and thus its so fitting for this to take my 100th review spot.

Why do you need to schedule nothing in the afternoon? Its because you are going to be in all out food coma. Do not be distracted by the "super burrito" option...that will be like a 3 pound burrito, and you'll want to die before you finish it. Just get the regular unless its your last meal on earth, and you'd like to explode from the inside out.

The burritos are seriously perfect in balance. My fav meat is by far pastor, though the carne asada is a close second. The pollo and other stuff that isn't made off the grill is a little too wet for my taste. In an effort to dodge food coma, I actually have a tendency to hit up veggie burritos quite often here. They are superb. On the drink side, the entire 7-eleven-ish selection of beverages is available from a lot of glass refrigerator boxes, with the addition of Budweiser and Clamato in the same freaking can. Am I the only one who thinks this is projectile puke just waiting to be unleashed on someone standing 10 feet away from me?

There's no seating inside, but I recommend city hall steps, or the "drunk tank" right next door (the benches under the pergola). The help is very fast at lunch (can get slower at dinner). Pretty much everyone is SUPER nice. I dropped a juice on the floor, and made a huge scene, and was horribly embarrassed. Not only did I get a million "de nada"s from the nice lady who always mans the checkout, but they didn't even request that I pay for it. When I left the price of the thing in their tip jar, they now seem to remember me every time I'm in there.

When you are in South City, and this place is open, check it out for some cheap (about $5), and quick taqueria foodage.

I've only been here for their burritos. OMG their burritos are so big and heavy; it really fills you up. It's also extremely delicious, and it doesn't leave the thirsty feeling afterwards. They have a good selection of meats and other items for the burrito. This will definitely give you food coma. Price is good too.

This place is more of a Mexican Market first then a small deli/cook area for hot fast food.

I definitely recommend this place for their burritos!

Hands down the best place in South City for food on the go!!
The parking sucks, the lines are long, and its a convinient store at the same time but it's all sooo  worth the food...Man, have you had their carnitas?? You have to try them they always serve you really fresh, hot meat there and its the best. My all time favorite pick is the Super de Carne Asada con todo!! Its so good and huge for what you pay for it man this place has never falied.
It's also a torilleria so the tortillas are always going to be be the freshest they can be because they package them right there behind the store.
Go there trust me I've been going there since I was about 8 and man it will never get old I love it there. I might just leave San Jose right now and get me a burrito from there!!

I finally came here to see what the hype was all about. I dunno after living in davis and sac I just feel that 6 bucks for a burrito is a Teensy expensive cuz the ones in sac are around $5 bucks. I guess i just gotta pinch myself and realized im living in the bay area and everything cost an arm and a leg.

anyways...i ordered the chicken and beef burrito cuz i really wanted to see if i would like them. both burritos were REALLY salty. like so salty i really wish i had more guac and sour cream in it. also i dont like the way they pile on the ingredients while making the burrito cuz it dusnt get mixed in very well together and so u get meat in one part of the burrito, sour cream in another... well u get  the idea. also the beef wuz incredibly greasy and it wuz the cheap kind that wuz kinda minced in and not big long grilled strips. i think my fave place in ssf to eat burritos is still la morena.

The carnitas is so good you will have a pokgasm!

I have no idea how carnitas is made, nor do I care.  What I can say is that theirs is the best I have ever had.  I have been up and down California and have eaten my fair share of Mexican food and nothing beats my home town favorite mom and pop Mexicatessen.

I have been going here for years and always see the same friendly faces.  You enter and work your way to the back counter to order your food.  You sometimes have to weave around a flotilla of people who are just hindering you from getting to what you want (Carnitas in my case) but eventually you make it to the back to stand in line before ordering.  The line is usually pretty long but the men and women behind the counter are fast and efficient!

Nothing is more tantalizing that waiting in line smelling all the amazing food in front of you while you are trying to figure out what you want to eat.  I think they do that on purpose because I usually end up walking out with more than I went in for.  Great add-ons include the salsa and homemade tortilla chips....and who can say no to their guacamole?  As far as the main attraction I hear a super carnitas burrito with extra hot sauce.  If you are feeling adventurous, dig into the Torta Milanese.

All that being said, 5 well deserved stars!

It truly does not get better then this. I have been going to La Tapatia since i was old enough to hold a burrito in my hand. I hadn't been in a while since i moved to San Jose but i thought that i would pay my old burrito stomping grounds a visit.  I couldn't believe it was just as i remembered it. Right down to the black brick exterior and red lettered sign.

I walked in and immediately you could smell all those wonderful spices that they marinate and season their meats with. What stands out in my mind though is their Carnitas! Oh man, that deep fried wonderfully seasoned, crispy yet juicy PORK!!  It could bring a grown man to his knees. Their Carne Asada is ridiculous good too.

I had almost forgotten that this is not only a place to get great burritos, it also doubles as a small mexican grocery store. Dont plan on sitting down here because everything is TO GO and make sure you bring CASH since I'm pretty sure its old and they don't accept credit card. Do not worry though, the burritos are reasonably priced and the portions are huge! Its also right across the street from city hall and there are plenty of open benches to enjoy your meal on.

Making my way to the back of the store i pass through a pretty decent crowd of people for a 6 o'clock dinner rush. I get in line and I'm practically in the back storage space where they make their own tortillas!!!

When your standing next to the beer isle as well you can help but to grab a six pack or a tall boy to go along with your massive burrito.  Its finally my turn to order and i of course go with a Super Carnitas with everything in it, and i ask always for onions and cilantro. You can have your choice of beans but i prefer refried for this particular burrito.  Their hot salsa that they put in the burrito is not so much hot as it is flavorful! SO make sure you say yes to it when they ask! Grab a bag of home made chips too before you check out!

I cant even wait till i get home to eat! I grab seat on a near by park bench right by city hall and have a bite. As soon as i bite into this perfectly constructed masterpiece I swear memories of my childhood rushed back and I was completely taken back. The chips were still hot and salty which is their only flavor, but wow they are crunchy and delicious!

Do not be fooled into going anywhere else for a great burrito! THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE YOU'LL EVER WANT TO GO!!

I tip my hat to La Tapatia, you have never let me down and i hope you never will!

La Tapatia is older than I am. It has been in SSF forever. They have the best mexican produce and yummy burritos, tacos, tortas, tamales, pico de gallo, and guacamole (all freshly made there everyday)!!! No  eating area there but you can grab your food and eat it across the street. Nice little lawn area surrounding city hall.

Just started working in South City and I'm in search of a good taqueria. Went here based on the rave reviews of Yelpers. Got the Carne Asada super burrito minus rice and beans. And can I get some Carne Asada with my SALT! The sodium levels in this meat were off the charts. Maybe it was just a bad batch. Looks like a popular spot and I'm willing to give it another chance. Next time I'll try a different variety of meat.

So far La Morena on Baden is my top SSF taqueria until I find better.

Oh my...one of the BEST burritos I've had in the Bay Area!  The first time I came here, I was a bit confused by the food counter within the Mexican food mart.  However, it's hard to argue with the product!

The first couple of times, I stuck to their grilled chicken super burritos (with extra hot sauce!), and was always content with my meal.  What a fool I was!  The chicken is fine and all, but their carne asada is superb (with extra hot sauce!).  I have yet to try their carnitas (with extra hot sauce!), but will make a point of getting it the next time I go (which will be soon....with extra hot sauce!).

Regardless if you order their tacos or burritos (regular or super...with extra hot sauce!), expect to get a generous serving.  The ingredients are also always fresh as well; thanks to the sheer popularity, the turnover of the ingredients means things don't sit there for very long.  Speaking of which, don't be intimidated by the lines either; these guys move fast so the wait in line doesn't last long.  And neither will your food (with extra hot sauce!).

went here for a burrito that my bf said was the best...first it's a really huugge burrito and they hook you up with meat. plus is very cheap for that much food.

the burrito was pretty good and also, i noticed that the burrito tastes better the day after. Leftovers!!!

Gotta agree with the masses, the burritos are the shiz.  But, for as good as the burritos are, the roasted chicken is even better.  Cooked perfectly, moist, flavorful, I mean really, really good.  I have had this food catered before, and even over chafing, the chicken is delectable and stays moist.

Good grub.

Go to Quickly and grab a drink, then come here to grab a burrito! Their burrito is on the top of my list. Even when I ate it after 3 hours of purchasing it, it was still good. Imagine how good it would be when I actually ate it right when I bought it!

I got the superr burrito which you can choose your meat and it comes with Rice, Mild Salsa, Sour cream, Lettuce, Hot Sauce, Guacamole, Cheese, and choice of beans. The burrito was huge. Probably one of the biggest I've ever eaten. I hate it when they put sour cream in just one spot of the burrito and you don't have sour cream in 3/4 of it.. but here, they have it everywhere. In every bite, I had sour cream, guac, cheese, meat, rice, salsa, etc. The workers here are super friendly and their service is fast.

Next time I wanna try their quesadilla!

I've known about this place for years and they make the best tamales that I know about but being in South City they are very inconvenient for me. After the Tamale disaster of Saturday I needed something to remind me of everything good and wholesome in the world and took the trek out to La Tapatia.

This place has a very cool looking facade, shiny black tiles. Inside the front half is a market and the back half is a taqueria, it's strictly to go as there is no seating but there are benches across the street where you can enjoy your food.

The Tamales are very good, moist and tasty. If you find yourself in South city give them a try.
