Don't ask questions just shop. It is helpful if you have a latin friend with whom you can ask questions such as, "what animal is this made from?," or the more specific, "what part of what animal was this made from?"
They have so many good things here that I can't find at Raley's or that isn't marked up 150%. I wish they had better pinatas. If I have the time though, I'd rather get the full experience from Denio's, but La Superior is good in a pinch.
One of my favorite things to do is wake up early on Sunday, & go to the Superior to get pan mexicano before the NFL games start. I love watching them make the empanadas, rolled breads, braids, and yummy cakes. Try the custard filled long breads, & the yellow cakes with the rainbow dot frosting. They have a very large selection of pastries, but get there before 9am to have the best choices.
Yes, it does tend to get crowded with lots of families & grandmas just milling around, but that tells me that the Superior is a great mercado for personal service & consistent product. The butcher block has everything, even whole octopus & whole large catfish. (Both delicious when fried whole.) Also, the produce selection is large and has many unique items. Prices for common produce (onions, tomatoes) are better than any grocery store in town. When roma tomatoes are on sale @ Safeway or Savemart for 99cents a pound, they are 59cents a pound at the Superior. 4 stars for good produce & butcher block, & 5 stars for fresh made pan mexicano, made by experts.

My husband is a serious barbecue practitioner (by which I mean slow-smoking, not grilling) and we love love love pork shoulder. He found the pork shoulder sold at La Superior to be excellent for smoking, as it is significantly more fatty and flavorful than the big commercial markets usually sell. (Lately though we did score some great pork shoulder at CostCo).
Yeah, this mercado is shabby and the staff is painfully slow and it is sort of like social hour for all the families and grannies, but I've bought very decent take-out carne asada and carnitas with beans, rice, tortillas and salsa, so I'll keep going back.
Update Sept 2007: the sad fact is that the handsome hubby's cholesterol is now deemed too high for his well-being and we are thus eating more seafood and chicken at dinner. I'm cool with that of course, especially when I can eat the whole spatchcocked pollo asado from La Superior. Umm, tasty crisp skin, brightly seasoned meat, and it's way easier to cut and serve than the whole roasted chickens at most grocery stores, even!

there always seem to be flies around, and it smells funny because of the meat/fish counter. this is a place Mexican women do their shopping because they feel more comfortable here, around fellow Mexicans and where any true Mexican picks up those special Mexican items not found at normal grocery stores.
i just plain dont trust them for takeout kind of food.. their deserts can be good-- but the fact that there is a fly in the display case makes it unappetizing.. dont be fooled by their cake making skills- they are not good cakes- not legit in regards to quality-- its a specialty 3leches cake- but eww, and way too expensive for what you get
This place rocks for Latino food. You can find Mexican, Peruvian and Salvadorian food. Inca Cola, Paneton D'onofrio if you are Peruvian this place has the stuff you need. They even sell hot food too. Yeah, if you speak Spanish then you are OK but the English in that store is limited but you'll see good bargains.
