I like this Spanish restaurant, it's definitely got "character" - by that I mean, it allows me to enjoy a glass of wine and then giggle like a schoolgirl when I try and pronounce the name: Ree-ho-HA! Much to the consternation of my dining partner! Thankfully, aside from the name, there's not much else you can have a go poking fun at.
The food is superb and varied - there's the obligatory paella, and yes on one occasion making go-with-what-you-know choice I dined on it (highly recommended!) but there's also a range of chicken, fish and many more typically meaty Spanish dishes to selecy from the menu, that you could may I add spend at least the better part of 20 minutes perusing. Tapas ranges from £1.95 - £4.95
Bare floorboards and intimate dining make you feel part of a tiny world of gastronomic happiness, On a dark winter (or summers) night, mixed with candle light and the aroma of a heady bottle of Alta Rio Reserva, you would need little more to be feel transported to Las RamblasHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Angela B.Hastings, United Kingdom499581179Dec 12, 2009
This has got to be one of the biggest tapas menus I've seen outside of London...and Spain! It's nice to see they've got the kind of dishes I've been pining after since my return to Blighty. Firm favourites include Costilla (marinated spare ribs), Albondigas (Spanish meatballs) and Mejillones (mussles marinated in wine, lemon and herbs).
Apart from the tapas menu, they also have some very traditional dishes on the A la Carte menu including Chuletas de cordero (grilled marinated lamb chops) and Cod catalana (cod fillet suated with garlic, shallots, cream and wine topped with parmesan cheese). Surely this is run by a Spanish family. Delicious.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (Gianlu…)Manchester, United Kingdom909152Sep 19, 2008

Wonderful stuff.

I have been fortunate enough to eat at La Rioja several times and have never been disappointed. The food is very authentic and delicious. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived but that wasn't a problem because our friendly waitress let us have a drink in the bar area. We were shown to our table shortly after that and were able to peruse the substantial tapas menu. We decided on calamari, garlic prawns, patatas bravas, goats cheese and grilled apple as well as a big bowl of olives. All 5 dishes were excellent. The calamari was done just as I like it and the garlic prawns were massive and fresh. I also liked the idea of a fish counter because you could see what you were going to get before you ordered. The service was friendly and efficient. The only issue stopping me from giving La Rioja 5 stars was the lack of atmosphere as there were only another couple of tables in there. Come on Altrincham get yourselves down to La Rioja, you won't regret it.

A lovely little Spanish Restaurant in the heart of Altrincham. The menu is huge, it took me at least 15 minutes to read through it one! Portion sizes are very good and definitely good value for money. It does get busy at the weekends so I would recommend to book to avoid disappointment.

Can't praise this enough. The set menu was fantastic value at £10/person for a great selection of cold tapas, tortilla & patatas bravas plus your choice of 4 hot tapas from a substantial selection. We chose chorizo in red wine, albondigas, costillas (ribs in mouthwatering sauce) & aubergines in a tomato sauce with cheese on top. In a fit of sheer greed we also ordered scallops & prawns with garlic & chilli. It was without exception delicious. The tortilla was amazing. I can't wait to go back. We were also so full we could barely manage everything and couldn't even think about pudding(unheard of occurrence).

I've had many meals at La Rioja because I can depend upon it for top quality ingredients, attractive presentation and full flavoursome offerings which are refreshed on a regular basis with specials. The service is friendly and knowledgeable and they are flexible, always doing their best to please the customer and meet any dietary restrictions / needs you might have. I've learned a lot about food just by asking questions and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend La Rioja for any occasion or size of party.
