One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
La Puerta was definitely the highlight of our SD trip. We came in here on Friday afternoon for Happy Hour. They had A/C (yay for no humidity!), comfy booths, dark decor, great music. Our waitress was super friendly and nice.
The Happy Hour menu was half off a handful of appetizers, and half off all drinks. We ordered guacamole, potato cheese flautitas, and carne asada fries. We had planned on going to dinner later, but after eating all the delicious appetizers, we didn't need to eat afterwards. This was the best bar food ever!
Portions were huge and very, very tasty. The carne asada fries were the best of the bunch, but the other items were also delicious. We sat in La Puerta for a couple hours, and had 6 drinks between the two of us. I fell in love with the Afternoon Delight cocktail, it was a really yummy mojito-ish drink with tequila, cucumber, mint, agave & 7up. Oh yeah, all of their drinks are named after songs, like Purple Haze, You Shook Me All Night Long, Cinnamon Girl, Barracuda, etc...cute idea.
The bill? $40!! Only $40 for 3 huge appetizers and 6 drinks, how awesome is that?
We decided to come back here for breakfast on Saturday morning. $1 mimosas and super cheap breakfast. My friend had eggs and bacon, and I had Huevos Rancheros with beans and potatoes. Breakfast was awesome and we both cleaned our plates.
Total for breakfast? Only $19. Why isn't there a La Puerta in OC? I will definitely be back here on my next trip to SD!
This is a review for their happy hour.
Came yesterday with 3 friends and got a lot of stuff for not so much cash. 9 beers, 1 soda, guacamole, 11 tacos, 1 tj dog, 2 chocolate flans for a total of $55!
The cochinita taco was so good! Shredded pork in a red sauce with pickled onions- I loved it. The other highlight was the pork taco with guac and pineapple. Both packed a lot of flavor for being street taco size.
It got busy as the night wore on, but there is a decent amount of seating here and the service was good. I didn't check out their regular menu, but highly recommend the happy hour.
HOLY CHEAP DATE, BATMAN!! We only paid $ 18.72 for 2 Stone Porters,1 Newcastle, 1 tostadita platter,1 flautita platter and an order of guacamole with chips! So GOOOOD and SO cheap!
The tostaditas are delicious and tiny tostadas covered with a layer of beans, cochinita pibil, shredded lettuce, cebolla desflemada (onions pickled in lime juice) and topped with avocado. Mmmmm-mmmmh! And the tiny size works to your advantage, as they do not get soggy quickly like a regular tostada would. The pork is seasoned very lightly with the achiote ( annato seed paste)- for all you flavor wimps out there!
The flautitas are not flautas, they are rolled tacos, stuffed with what appears to be mashed potatoes, dressed with lettuce, sour cream and queso cotija,A-OK, but I would probably not order them again. The dipping sauce that accompanies them, however, is DELICIOUS and quite frankly saves them.
The guacamole is served on a mountain of yummy chips and has a little interesting twist: nummy little pieces of panela cheese mixed in it.
The service we had on Sunday was fabulous, unlike many other yelpers'. Parking was easy, and Horton Plaza is like 2 blocks away.
Wow, It's been a long time, since Mexican has left me begging for more. You La Puerta did the job. I don't know what kind of sauce or marinade you use in the Shrimp and carne asada tacos, but I really can't care. They are absolutely amazing. A sort of tangy, but very creamy and wholesome flavor, rounded out with some salsa and avocado. I had two tacos, I easily could have polished off 5 more. (~9.99)
They bring out the chips and salsa even before you ask for them. And they are the extra thick tortilla chips, with fresh red and green salsa. .
Odd to say, this place looks like an old dungeon, in a good way. With wooden walls, chandeliers, and an old Luchadore movie playing on the wall.
Definitely somewhere to try when in Downtown SD
Oh me, oh my, I want some more of La Puerta's carne asada fries.
I'm not kidding either. Even though I'm back on my diet right now if someone placed those fries in front of me right now there is now way I would have the will power to turn them down. They were truly amazing.
On our first night in San Diego my girlfriend and I had the privilege of meeting up with fellow Yelper David G, one of the smartest, entreating, and coolest Yelpers I have ever met.
The three of us arrived at La Puerta around 6pm, giving us exactly an hour to take advantage of their happy hour specials. Since it was a still early, and since it was a weeknight, the restaurant was not that crowded and we were seated immediately at a huge booth near the end of the bar. Once seated, the first thing we did was place an order for two plates of their famous carne asada fries. I believe David G said it best in his review when he said "This plate of fries was totally kickass, for sure." The fries were topped with lots of juicy carne asada, sour cream, guacamole, cheese, and pico de gallo. Words can not describe how amazing these fries really were.
After we inhaled the fries we all decided to order a margarita. All three of us ordered a different type of margarita but I think the one I had was the best. Purple Haze was its name and it contained La Puerta's home mead sangria swirled into their frozen margarita. The Purple Haze may be one of my new favorite margaritas of all time.
Next up is the entrée portion of the review. My girlfriend and I both ordered their California burrito. The Cali burrito contained carne asada, French fries, jack cheese, grilled onions, sour cream, and guacamole. I thought this burrito was decent, not the best burrito I have ever had but it was defiantly not the worst. David G ordered a pollo torta, which was huge. After David finished half of his sandwich he tagged me in to finish off the job. This torta was delicious. The roll it was served on was very soft and chewy and was loaded with chicken and vegetables. I thought his entrée was much better then mine.
My only beef with La Puerta was their service. It seemed like the waitress forgot about us a few times, and it took a really long time for us to get our margaritas and refills on our waters.
The prices here are great, especially their happy hour menu. The carne asada fries are usually 10 bucks but during HH they were only 5 bucks.
Even though the service was lacking I know I will visit La Puerta again soon. Their carne asada fries are so good that there is no way I could not come back every time I visit SD.
I take for granted how lucky San Diegans are to live in a city where carne asada fries are cheap and abundant. La Puerta proved that to me last night. Other cities may have their own local specialties, but few of these specialties are as satisfying and sinfully delicious as carne asada fries.
I dropped by here last night for an ultra-mini-and-very-unofficial-Yelp-event featuring Craig R, easily one of awesomest Yelpers around, and someone whose love and appreciation of good food is something that I completely admire. He, his girlfriend, and I all took at seat at one of the booths and immediately knew that we were going to order....(what else?)...the carne asada fries. This plate of fries was totally kickass, for sure. Artfully arranged on the plate and covered with plentiful carne asada and guacamole, these fries were gone in minutes. These were probably my favorite part of the whole meal. Delish.
These fries were successful at whetting our thirst, so we had a round of margaritas. I wasn't feeling adventurous, so I stuck with a house margarita, which was sweet and refreshing. I also tasted the Purple Haze, a creative, fruity, and easy-on-the-eyes cocktail featuring sangria mixed into a margarita, the result being a purplish nebula floating in a frosted glass. I'll definitely have one of those when I'm here next time.
Next up-- the entree. I had the pollo asada torta, which was tasty but absolutely ginormous. After all the carne asada fries, I could barely have half of the torta before giving up. It was quite tasty, though, with lots of chicken and veggies on a soft, chewy, and flavorful roll. The sandwich had a spicy kick to it that I really enjoyed. It also was served with a mountain of (regular) fries, which seemed really redundant after all those carne asada fries. I probably should've requested that they be substituted for something lighter instead...but next time I'll know, and I'll plan better.
After the meal was all said and done, I practically had to be rolled out of there. The food was so tasty here, but the only thing that makes me hesitate to unequivocally endorse this place is that the service was a little spacy. Our server tended to disappear for long stretches, and we practically had to beg and plead to have our water glasses filled. The place was mad busy by the end of the night, so I assume that had something to do with it.... c'est la vie, I suppose.
Despite all that, I'll certainly come back here. I mean, I couldn't possibly deny myself those amazing carne asada fries forever.
La Puerta is the best Mexican place in downtown San Diego, and I've been to them all. I come here at least once a week.
Their food is killer. I've tried everything on the menu and nothing has disappointed. My favorite is the al pastor burrito (pork and pineapple), followed by the carne asada quesadilla. Their salsas also kick ass.
And they serve food until 1am!
La Puerta also has one of the best happy hours in town. They have $2 Tecates as well as this dark, bitter Mexican craft beer you won't find anywhere else (can't remember the name of it).
The place looks cool with huge, comfortable booths, lots of wood with an old, textured feel, dim orange lighting strung from the ceiling, and mirrors.
Service is usually pretty good, especially at the bar. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that I've gotten serious attitude from hostesses on more than one occasion when I've waited at the hostess stand to be seated and no one was there, so I seated myself.
Otherwise, everything about this place kicks ass.
Came here tonight for the first time. They have an excellent Happy Hour every night of the week from 3-7. Half of ALL drinks and appetizers! I tried the Purple Haze, which is half margarita half sangria. Very good. Also tried the Devil Went Down to Georgia which was good but very sweet. For the appetizers, we had the Flautitas (am I spelling that right?) which were sooo good, and the guacamole was enough to feed at least 4 people. The guacamole was really delicious and came with a huge amount of addicting chips. They also gave us two free salsas.
We were so full at this point but ordered dinner, too. I got the Ranchero Shrimp tacos especiales which were good, but I have to say that the shrimp tasted just too fishy. I'm not sure if they were past their freshness, but I couldn't finish them because they had such a strong smell and taste. All of the sides were very good, though.
The service was mediocre. Our waitress didn't have a personality or smile once but then again, she did not leave us stranded for long amounts of time either and asked how we were doing. The place was very loud and crowded. I would definitely return again except this time maybe just for drinks and appetizers!
I'm very happy indeed!
Took a chance while I had guests in town. I'm happy I didn't just go to my regular joints.
We went on a Thursday and made it just in time for Happy Hour. Drinks were half off and apps as well.
The portions were more than expected. Service was pleasant and not obtrusive and seating was okay. Music was a little to loud for my older guests.
This is one damn good happy hour!
I just got back (excuse any consequent spelling or grammatical errors) and am already calling around to see who's in with me to go again soon!
My friend and I each had two roomy margaritas, split a quesadilla, and mowed down on a bowl of super tasty (aka super salty) tortilla chips and two types of salsa. Our total bill was $20 and some change--basically everything was half price.
Cute bartenders too which is a bonus. As for the clientele, not so much tonight (sorry dad in the acid washed jean jacket), but there's hope alive there!
Happy hour is IT!
The green salsa they serve there is the shiznit. Great happy hour (I was there on Monday night) Server was kind enough to bring me unlimited amounts of chips and salsa cause I was so damn hungry as I waited for my friends to head over to the next spot. So she brought me chips and salsa.
The GREEN SALSA that comes with the chips.......enough said.
OH and some drink my wife had called............Baracuda..........I think. Its like a margarita and was pretty tastey.
Despite an initial so-so experience with the food at La Puerta long time ago, I have never been disappointed again. Their burrito is a killer!
What I like the best is the atmosphere, the always great music, waitresses who are very attentive and on top of their sh*t. And I must say probably the best bartenders in town. The mojito, per my girlfriend, is excellent, and my whiskey sour is always loaded. Also, a rare place in town that has DosEquis Amber on draft!
And thanks again to the hostess who is always helpful and not annoyed when we ask for a booth, even though it's always just the 2 of us.
Even the owner one very busy Sat night came several times to us to explain what the situation was with the booth availability, as we were waiting at the bar.
In other words, love that place.
The food here is excellent, i had a burrito here once that i secretly wished would keep regenerating each time i took a bite.
Great staff, great tequila, and Santo movies playing on the wall.
I'm in.
La Puerta really made my Friday afternoon. Happy Hours always make me happy, but this happy hour made me especially happy. 1/2 half all drinks=amazing time. I had 3 of the Mr. Mojo Rising and probably could have had 3 more. These were the most delicious drink ever...I need to invest in one of those machines they had. My husband enjoyed his Jacks with a splash of coke. We also enjoyed their Hef and a few other of their beers on tap.
The staff was really friendly and my drinks were constantly being refilled.
We got the guacamole, which was enough food for us to consider it dinner, so we filled up on more drinks. The total bill plus tip came to $35 for 11 drinks and an appetizer...not too shabby. Needless to say, we were filling pretty good after our visit to La Puerta.
Carne asada French fries... French fries made messy love with a plate of nachos.
Watched epic post season game between NYY and LAA from inning 9 to 13.
This may have been the happy hour specials talking, but their guacamole is more life-affirming than Rudy, We Are Marshall, and Remember the Titans COMBINED.
Their slushy Mojito will get you very drunk.
Mo-fuckin-jito in a slushy machine.
Happy hour is AWESOME.
Strong margaritas. Good tequila selection.
Chips and guac with the little cheese cubes, damn good too.
Sorry but band t-shirts (from target) as a uniform I don't get it.
La Puerta is amazing! I came here for dinner after some friends highly recommended it, and I loved it! We stumbled across their happy hour-- even better! The various mixed drinks and margaritas were amazing... everyone in our group got a different one each time we ordered so that we could all sample each one! We ordered food from the happy hour menu too... the prices were so affordable and the portions were huge... next time we go, I think we will share :) All in all, it was a great experience and I highly recommend this place for good food, great drinks, and a fun atmosphere!
Holy frijoles! I've never seen such a debaucherous brunch, not even in NYC, kingdom of all-you-can-drink-even-though-you're-hungover-from -last-night brunches.
It was crazy packed but we were able to nab some seats at the bar. I scanned the menu and... 'Get out! $1 mimosas?!?!' Yup, a dolla each. The food menu looked amazing too. Although the bf asked, 'Are you sure this place has good food? I don't actually see any Mexican people...' I looked around, 'Huh.. I hope so. It got high reviews??'
First up, mimosas please! Our bartender had us on the road to tipsy within minutes. Probably not a good idea to have 3 mimosas before the food arrived but I was sooo happy, I didn't have a care in the world. We never had to ask for refills; he was there with a pitcher before we even realized we needed more. My kind of man. The music was blasting and it only seemed to get louder as mimosa intake increased.
And then the food arrived! All apprehension was thrown out the window when we tried the bf's order of the $7 Enfrijoladas: 3 corn quesadillas drowning in luscious refried beans (good going in, not sexy later that night), topped with chorizo, cotija cheese, and cilantro. I got the $9 Street Tacos which were good, but I wanted to switch them for the bf's dish. The $6 flautitas are a must if you can spare some room.
Though it's some of the best Mexican I've had (my standards could be lowered since being transplanted to the east coast), it seemed like the late 20's/early 30's crowd was there to drink and socialize. Very much a SoCal scene and we felt out of place, but nothing a mimosa couldn't fix. It also helps when you realize you're the youngest diners present. Young and fertile is so hot.
Best carne asada fries is San Diego. And you have to try the Te queso. Really good deal on 1/2 price mondays. The staff is very attentive too most of the time.
The food is great and the portions are large. Prices are reasonable and they have good happy hours.
FOOD: Their chunky tortilla soups are tasty with an abundant amount of avocado. The tortas are ridiculously humongous. We split it among 2 people and took a whole HALF home. Their tacos are very good and they have tons of tacos you can mix and match, like pork and pineapple, avocado and beef, shrimp ranchero. Tasty!!!!
The ambiance is what you would expect in a Gaslamp district. Plus, they serve food til 1am, even on weeknights.
My friends from out of town came from a 10pm flight on a Thursday. We met DJ Ratstar...one of the few DJs that truly spin in SD, not regurgitate stuff on the radio...I'll save for another rant....but we got to hear Run DMC, NWA, with all the beat box style scratching mixed with break beats.....it was great!
My only qualm was their Micheladas.....you gotta have the tomato! We got this tall gold colored drink and was like, WTF. The taste wasn't bad, but if I want a Michelada, gimme my tomato spicy beer!!! The waitress said, AFTER she served it, "Yeah, we do our Micheladas different here." Then please warn us first. Or atleast offer with or without tomato.
Honey, if you boast mexican food, you gotta do that right!
Oh- and one more thing, one of the best happy hour specials in SD. Seriously, guilty cheap!
Wow
We ate here this last weekend (10/24/09) after reading the reviews here on Yelp and it was great! It is not Mexican food in the traditional sense. It is definitely americanized but some of the best mexican food I've had ever I think. And growing up in Southern California I've had my share of good mexican food.
The waitress was very nice and helpful the music was bumping but not too loud were we couldn't hear each other talking and best of all the prices were very reasonable. I would definitely eat here again.
All their food rocks, we travel from Orange County to San Diego all the time, usually just to eat at La Puerta! Make sure you get the chips and guac, it's awesome! My boyfriend loves the street tacos, I usually get the enchiladas or the veggie burrito, although I have yet to order something that I don't absolutely love. It's fun to watch Charger games here, although you better get there early or else you won't get in!
came here late-ish, on a thursday night.
really liked the vibe inside with the hanging dim lights and live dj that i think plays until close.
wasn't that hungry so we just ordered some guacamole and the tj dogs which were both very excellent.
their salsa was amazing.
prices were good.
i think they have a decent happy hour with specials on frozen drinks also, but i had a pretty tasty mojito myself.
Really liked it here! Everything on the menu was delicious and under $10 which was almost weird. The surf and turf burrito was my favorite. Huge portion, fresh ingredients and pretty... for a burrito. They have about 8, 6+ person booths in here, so when it's crowded, you'll be hard-pressed to get a table. Make reservations!
My only complaint is that they don't serve chips and salsa for free ;)
Went on a Monday night! I will always go on Monday nights! Half off appetizers and ANY DRINK you want HALF OFF! This means wine or margaritas I'd never normally buy are in the budget! I've never thought about writing a review on cocktails because I'm usually a beer and wine girl but they are sooo great and creative.
Muddled basil or mint.
No sugar, agave nectar instead.
Fruit purees
Top shelf alcohol 1/2 off
The guacamole is HUGE and delicious.
Our server was super accomodating, patient and even took back my jalapeno drink without making me feel like a jerk. Word to the wise, its a little strange to have that kind of spicy in a cocktail. I'd recommend the Sweet Leaf or the Afternoon delight.
Good Job La Puerta. I've sent guests here a ton, but never actually went. Food review to come BUT... get some more vegetarian or fish options perdy please.
I really, really like when I go to yelp for serious advice on where to eat and I follow the stars and am not disappointed...this is what Yelp is all about people!
A week before I went to San Diego I yelped this place, wrote down the name and address, but then forgot it and didn't refer back. However, the hotel I was staying at recommended it as a good place to go for Happy Hour. We were there from 5 p.m on a Sunday until midnight. The service was super friendly, the burrito was the best I'd ever had (and I like to eat them) and the drinks were yummy and cheap. Highly, highly recommend.
The best part was when I did refer back to my list of places to go and saw that La Puerta was one of them...I was happy it didn't disappoint!
I was pleasantly surprised by this funky little Mexican spot. The BF and I stumbled upon La Puerta one evening after our flight from Vegas. I'm so glad we gave it a try.
The Ambiance - This is a lively place with a cool vibe. Great for meeting up with a group of friends after work or on the weekend.
The Food - Loved the chips and variety of salsas - and those tasty street tacos...the bomb! They make a killer margarita too.
The service - Excellent. Very friendly staff. I couldn't have asked for a better dining experience.
Can't wait to go back for the Happy Hour - I hear they have killer specials.
Highly Recommended!
The La Puerta is my favorite downtown Happy hour place. It has happy hour 3-7 pm Tuesday-Saturday and all day Monday. Half off drinks and limited bar menu. OMFG!!! Where else can you get your drunk on for half off. I LOVE the strawberry fields, Hot-for-your-teacher, and Afternoon Delight. The food is the best bar food i ever had. And i am not speaking from my drunkiness. The carne asda fries are like heaven in your mouth.
Where else can you get 6 drinks and two meals for $35 without breaking the bank. That is what i call a recession proof buzz. : )
Oh my gosh this place is amazing. Get the guac, get the pollo tacos at the bottom of the menu. For cocktails: sweet leaf or frozen mojito. On Mondays, ALL DRINKS ARE HALF OFF ALL NIGHT. Seriously?! I go here regularly and make sure to take all my out-of-town visitors here as well. Did I mention every last staff member is super friendly? I am thanked for coming in by like five of them every time I leave. Nice to know your business is appreciated and keeps me coming back. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.
Commuting from Orange County to San Diego is no big deal when i know I am going to indulge in delicious potato flautitas, guacamole, al pastor street tacos with pineapple salsa, barracudas, a frozen mojito, and that its happy hour all day on Saturdays and Sundays! They have home made chips and tasty salsas too.
Seriously the food taste and texture is on point. Everything is as it should be. If you really want to treat your taste buds, eat here!
La Puerta = Tremendous.
Guacamole to start your evening is a MUST. Trust me!!! Will satisfy a party of 4!!
Amazingly cheap happy hour! Excellent food.
Give it a try, you will NOT be dissappointed. :)
I like how they kinda-sorta copied the Lucha Libre concept :P
I went to La Puerta two mondays in a row, last week after the Western Food Expo and had a good time with my co-workers. We got there at 4ish and by 9pm, it was Taxi-Time.
Went again yesterday for some Labor celebrations with some friends. Had a good time yet again......
But honestly, half-off food (some) and drinks (all) will be popular with just about ANY establishment. With this place though, the drinks far outshine the food. Not to say the food is bad, it's just that the drinks are better tasting and more well balanced. The Lowrider Margarita was phenomenal, as are mostly all of the margaritas for that matter. Kudos for having Stone Smoked Porter on tap also.
The T.J Dawg came to me slightly charcoaled (read: burnt), so I hardly tasted anything else except for burnt bitterness. I did taste my friend's dawg and it tasted better, but that exposes some inconsistencies from the kitchen. Also, any self-respecting drunk that used to party in TJ all the time will know that the REAL TJ dogs will have mayo, hot sauce, pico de gallo, grilled onions AND grill jalapeños in it. La Puerta's version seemed a little dry.
I am noticing more restaurants/bars are offering recession-friendly happy hours on mondays and tuesdays, which is good for competition.
Overall though, you can't beat the value here, especially for downtown. And oh yeah, this place is crawling with terrific eye-candy. :)
*Edit: I forgot to mention that if you use a Visa/Mastercard, they put an automatic $50 hold on your card. Which freaked me out this morning because I although I paid at the bar with my card, $13, I paid cash at the table. So I called La Puerta and asked them about the $50, and some guy (Adam) apologized profusely for the bank hold and that they were trying to get rid of it. Just heads up.
I will not dock them a star because I saw no midgets or wrestlers. The frozen Mojito drink for like 2 bucks or something ridiculously cheap won me over! They are da bees knees!
Note: I had no food here only drinks.
La Puerta should be ashamed of themselves. This is some of the most terrible "Mexican" food I have had in a longggg time. And being so close to the border, there is really no excuse. The shrimp they served me were perhaps the slimiest, nastiest seafood I have ever put into my mouth. It tasted like what cat food smells like.
With food like this, La Puerta has officially become yuck fest central in my book of Mexican Restaurants!!
People who have eaten here and given this good ratings should lay off on the tequila when eating and writing reviews.
This is our favorite downtown happy hour spot. Great deals and delicious food. My favorite from the happy hour menu is the tostaditas, tasty! The flautitas are good, but the portion is pretty small. The carne asada fries are good and fill you up. Honestly, I've had better a hole-in-the-wall taco shops, but theirs are pretty good. We got the TJ dawg, a little smaller than I expected, but can't complain about a bacon wrapped hot dog. The drinks are the best! I love how they use tajin instead of salt on the rims. I've tried almost every drink on the menu and all have been good. The only one I didn't like very much was the purple haze or something like that. Great atmosphere, good music, good service. Great place! We love La Puerta!!
I see myself coming back here often.
Amidst the mirage of Gaslamp bars and the people they cater to on a Saturday night, La Puerta was the real deal.
My husband and our friends visiting from LA stopped in on the Saturday of Street Scene '09, around 1030PM. This place had me at:
+ No cover.
+ No dress code. It's like this: I walked the easy 10 blocks to and from Street Scene from my work parking garage in my cuter pair of reef flip flops. I had no problems getting in here. No one even batted an eye.
+ No line.
+ No waiting for a comfy booth for 4. We literally just walked in and took one.
+ Mr. Mojo's risin' -- their mojito slushee that runs $7-ish and served in a chilled mug. It hit the spot on a hot, muggy, San Diego night.
+ Flautitas. Off the happy hour price, they run $6, which I consider reasonable for late night Gaslamp grub. I will order this again.
+ Their 8x11 sheet of tequila service, from blanco, to reposado, to anejo. Frida blanco is served up at $10. Cazadores blanco is served up at $7. Think what you will, but that's fair to me. I didn't partake this time around, but I am enticed.
+ Offering up a unique, "could only happen this night" story: DJ Scooter was supposed to be playing in Europe this weekend but those plans fell through. So, he called up his friend who also owns/manages La Puerta and asked if he could spin this night just for the fun of it. And, he did -- playing music that made me nostalgic of growing up in the 80s. I didn't even mind that he played "The Right Stuff." Sincerely - I'd rather sing along to this music when it's spun rather than hear it sung at me at a karaoke joint.
Como se llama, "I will most definitely stop in again?" Because "Hasta manana" doesn't cut it.
Went here for brunch on a Saturday and were seated right away. Our waitress, a former ballerina from what she told us, seemed a little weird, but she was very nice and on top of it. I ordered the chilequiles rojas, but got served the verde sauce instead. I didn't send it back because I was so hungry. It was mediocre. My boyfriend had the posole which he said tasted a little bland at first, but after adding limon and Tapatio in it, he said those ingredients added more flavor. The waiters and waitresses were all very nice and we never had to wait for them to come by. Service was great.
Pluses: brunch Sat and Sun (most restaurants only serve brunch on Sun) with $1 mimosas (yay!), awesome service, friendly staff
Minus: food deserved only 3 stars
We went here on Saturday night and it was great! We had to wait only 10 minutes for a table. The drinks were really good. I liked their Purple Haze, which is a blended sangria margarita. I also had their Brown Sugar, which is a tamarind drink. I don't think most people will like tamarind, but I do. Everyone else liked their margaritas too.
The food was very reasonably priced especially for a restaurant/bar in Gaslamp. Every dish was either $8-10. One person ordered the TJ Dawgs and it came with fries. Another person ordered chicken enchiladas and it came with rice and beans and he loved that too. Of course, the sizes of the enchiladas are smaller than at your standard taco shop. Seriously, for Gaslamp...such a great deal.
They did serve us free chips and salsa and kept refilling our chips too.
I loved the vibe in this place. Perfect setting for you and a group of friends, or just you and your lovely lady or handsome man toy. The waitress lagged on our drinks and food but it was no biggie. We still enjoyed it and we loved our food, mixed drinks, and the grand finale - two Don Julio (my favorite).
My gf swears by it that this place has the best carne asada fries in San Diego. If it isn't right, it's pretty damn close to being the truth.
We had a few mixed drinks to go with our appetizer.
1. You Shook Me All Night Long
2. Whole Lotta Love
3. Strawberry Fields Forever
4. Lowrider
We actually had a few more than what I just mentioned but I don't rememer which ones I'm forgetting to include. Happy hour is half off of drinks and apps so you'll get your money's worth. Drink a few mixed drinks or beers, take a shot of silver patron or don for 5 bucks, eat something, drink more, drink a little bit more, then call it quits. I loved this place.
