7 reviews for La Nopalera
At the advice derived from Steve M's review, we decided to try this location again. It had been a few years for us too.
Having lived in San Antonio and Austin, TX. and exposed to what they term Tex-Mex, I had to turn my expectation meter way down to low as J-ville's not known for their Mexican food. While I will not say it's the best Mexican food I've ever had, or just how real and authentic it is, it was great on its own. After all you can no more define authentic Mexican any more than you could authentic American. And like wine tastes vary between individuals, I can't expect it to be the same as I may be accustom to or expect. I will only say what I had was delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
We had the standard chips and salsa. The salsa was tasty (not spicy) and consisted of fresh chopped tomatoes, cilantro, onions and peppers. I ordered a Margarita that was top notch. No top shelf or bottom rung ones here, they are all good.
My entree was Tacos Al Pastor which was finely chopped, chili seasoned pork served on 3 soft corn tortilla folded open. On the side, I was served chopped cilantro, onions, a spicier special salsa. All just 6.99! From another persons sides, I spooned on a few scoops of jack cheese, some guac and a smidgen of sour cream and it was love at first bite.
Again, while in Rome, don't expect tacos but do enjoy the tastes that are handed you.
This place used to seem so mexican, but lately I have noticed that as the empire grows, the food becomes more expensive and less mexican....strange.
I dont care too much for the re-fried beans, bland and watery for the most part. However they do have good salsa.
I guess I am just spoiled by the really cheap prices and real mexican food of Pepe's.
I went here on a recommendation from colleagues and I'm glad I did. The waitress was very prompt and friendly, the food delicious and the drink yummy. My only 2 complaints are that they were out of mint and couldn't make my Mojito and you pay on your way out - but there is no room to stand in line so it's a mess of people crammed up against the desk trying to pay at the same time.
Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Real, authentic cooking...everything I've had there has been perfectly cooked. The chicken and steak fajitas are fantastic, but I would reccommend sharing, as they come out sizzling on a very large skillet! :-)
The margaritas will definitely make walking a straight line very difficult, but they sure are good. I get mine with a little strawberry blended in for a fruity treat. Mmmm!
If you go to the location on Kingsley, ask for the server Eric...he'll make your trip relaxed, fun, and very enjoyable.
**also a location on Fleming Island, a little cleaner, a little nicer, a little quieter...**
Plentiful portions, low prices, gracious family service, cheap beer, and well spaced booths make this worthwhile. The food? Undistinguished. Too much ground beef in a rather tasteless sauce. Refried beans cooked beyond recognition. At these prices, one can't go too wrong but I'd give some of the competition a try.
Great food at low prices. Depending on the location they are not always friendly and it gets very crowded, but it is good food.
This place serves up the best mexican food at the best price and best service in all of jacksonville. They have several locations around Jax and all are very good.
