I like Greg B.'s directions on how to find this place. What a difference one block away from the main road does to the ambiance of the area. But that doesn't matter, all that does is the food. I didn't mind the guy staring at me while he's drinking a corona wondering if somethings about to happen.
Anyways, that day i was extra hungry from an all day off trail runs at Diamond Peak. I usually order 3 large tacos ($2.49 /ea), but that day i had 5!! all in a variety of meats: Carne Asada, Al Pastor, Carnitas, Pescado and Cabeza.
Most were decent sized and filled up in good proportions, the Carnitas was the only meat that didn't have flavor, and the pescado is the fried fish stick style which was pretty good. Everything else was yumz, their little salsa bar though was missing the pickled carrots. They did have radishes but they were non-pickled, so i had that.
On that day there were no outside seating.
Hole in the wall *Mexican* Mexican market & food place. This review is for the food - had the torta with carnitas - they made it with carne asada I think - but I didn't care - it was very good in every way that counts. My daughter had the beef quesidilla - it was big and loaded with fixins. The horchata was very tasty too. Decent salsa bar - six types of green and red sauces, but nothing special.
The place is tiny, seven stools along a bar at a window, indoors in the front area of your typical Mexican market. The service was fast and friendly. The price was good. Highly recommended for cheap North Shore eats if you like real Mexican.
Located right in the heart of the barrio of Lake Tahoe lies this little gem of a Mexican market/restaurant. If you blink you might just miss it! Stuffed into this tiny little location (and by tiny I mean freakin TINY) you have mexican produce, pandulce, a meat market AND a restaurant in the front where you can get fresh salsa to go, which is why we came here in the first place.
Definitely a location you want to check out if you get tired of the typical standard American food that tends to be found in Tahoe.
If you like BOTTLE CAPS in your burritos, then this place is for you! Good thing my buddy didn't crack a tooth. Will never go here again.
Somewhat dirty, and the chicken is a little too chewey for me. Stick to the veggie burrito, simple and good.
Ok, I was excited to find this place. The restaurant is super tiny. However there's extra seating outside. It was nice that there was a salsa bar offering several types of salsa, radishes, jalepenos and limes.
First day I ordered 2 mexicana tacos. I chicken and 1 carne asada. Chicken was so so but the asada was pretty good. My hubby got a super burrito. It was ok...It's not like Los Pericos (Hayward) but it was pretty good for being in the middle of Tahoe.
Ok, this is why I am giving it 3 stars and not 5...and this is being generous. The next day we went back. I ordered 3 tacos. 2 asada and 1 carnitas. Carnitas is not good so don't order that. Anyways, later that night MAJOR FOOD POISONING. I don't want to get into visuals so I won't. But this was the worst food poisoning ever!!!!
Full Service Mexican Grocery Store with a small restaurant attached. I think the restaurant has a total of 5 stools; so, most people order take out.
The Chili Rellenos are absolutely fantastic. The rest of the food is very good. Whenever we are in the area, we make at least one pilgrimage to La Mexicana.
We went here based on others' Yelp review. We all ordered different types of burritos. Each one was bland and uninspired. What a disappointment. I would not go back to this place.
For sure the best burritos on the North Shore. I think it's hilarious that they're right behind crappy Taco Bell. All those tourists eating fast food when yummy La Mexicana is mere feet away. Best part: The Chili Rejeno Burrito.
best burritos in Tahoe hands down. uber-cheap and the closest thing to the ubiquitous taqueria that we have up here in Tahoe. its also a mexican deli-market thing, you can buy those tasty little pastries and pigs ears and all the that if thats how you roll.
to find it just park in the Taco Bell parking lot in KB, walk through the Bell and go out the back door. La Mex will be right in front of you.
ENJOY!
Thank goodness for La Mexicana in Kings Beach. When I was on the West shore we used to make special trips for the absolutely authentic Mexican restaurant and grocery. Good prices, fast service and tasty tacos and burritos. I finally tried the lengua the last time, who knew, that I couldn't tell which was the carne asada? I have to give this a full rating because when in Tahoe, a good local place like this is essential for life.
