Review from Nehal P.
Augusta, GA
Best restaurant in Augusta. It doesn't get any better than this!
My friends and I dined at the Veritas wine and tapas lounge portion of the restaurant and enjoyed every minute of it.
You must get: mini crab cakes, baked brie, lamb chops, and white and dark chocolate mousse cake. The baked brie was to die for. I cannot wait to get this again.
The only dish that did not surpass our expectations was the ahi tuna nachos. Everything else was pure perfection. I mean it.
Chef Heinz is so kind and welcoming! He came by our table to chat with us and to give us wine suggestions. Oh by the way, did I mention that they have the most extensive wine list that I have ever seen?
The old Victorian manor makes you feel like you've entered a different time period. This has to be the most unique restaurant in Augusta. -

I lived in Augusta for five years and always wanted to go, but the opportunity never presented itself...until a year after I moved away. I went last week with my parents.
The building is old, beautiful, full of character and its secrets. The owners are amazing, particularly Zelda, who spent just over an hour telling us the most amazing stories about her life. She is a beautiful, loving, kind woman. I am so glad she crossed my path.
I was feeling adventurous, as was my father. Our apps were nothing out of the ordinary, butternut squash soup, which was not hot enough, but delicious. We also had the caprese salad which was good. Dad order the oysters on the half shell and said they were the best he ever had.
Mom wanted the mussel app and asked that it be served over linguine. The chef, thinking he was doing her a favor, removed the mussels from the shell and made a cream sauce and put it over linguine that was so overcooked it almost fell apart in your mouth, very disappointed with that.
I ordered ostrich. It was good, but the sauce was so salty I had to scrape it off. The meat was overcooked and a little tough. Dad ordered kangaroo, again, over cooked, tough, and dry for the most part. His sauce was also very salty.
The service started out really well, but went downhill slightly. Chelsea is wonderful, kind, extremely well spoken, but I think she was a little overwhelmed as the place started filling up. There were only two waiters and they had about 4 tables a piece by the time we finished. She mistakenly thought we all ordered soup and as a result, dad's oysters came out about 15 minutes after the soup arrived for me and mom. She also forgot to bring a utensil with which he could eat the oysters...in a place like that you don't want to suck them out of the shell like a neandrathal.
I would go back to experience the wine bar side of the house, but not for dinner. -

If you want classic French STYLE cuisine, then this is the place to go. Attention to detail is the key here, as the food is very, very flavorful and exquisitely prepared, and you can tell the chef has been classically trained. However, it was not all perfect. First off, we got a rookie waiter, which we found highly unusual at a place of this caliber. One, he didn't know that French Onion soup typically comes with cheese baked on top. Then, he totally forgot our appetizer! However, the Australian and New Zealand lamb that me and my boss got were simply perfection in meat preparation! There was no gaminess at all, and it was accompanied with a mild wine reduction that was a perfect accompaniment to the lamb. Not a huge plate, but enough to satisfy us carnivores. Note that this is not a cheap place by any means, but it is worth it IF, and this is a big IF, you enjoy the finer foods that great restaurants have to offer.
If they had given us a more professional waiter, then this would have been a 5 star rating. -

Augusta, GA
Very nicely done food, great service, and perhaps the best wine list in Augusta. The building has character, but the dining room is set up in such a way that you can hear everyone else's conversation.
If you want a really well prepared and presented dinner in Augusta, this is the place to go. -

Wow! Great food. Fine dining experience. Love the charm that the building provides. The service was lovely as well.
We had smoked ostrich and it blew me and my husband away. We had a full meal and everything was amazing. Creative menu.
Wonderful place to celebrate. -

Without a doubt, the best restaurant in Augusta. Very upscale, you actually get sorbet before the main course. You can wear a shirt and slacks. I would not recommend jeans or t-shirts. This is the ideal place for a romantic dinner.
Wine list is exceptional, has been commended by Wine Spectator (only one other Augusta restaurant, Augustino's, has had this honor. The ambiance is wonderful and elegant in an old Victorian house in downtown Augusta. Their bar area (great selection of aged Scotch) is also a tapas restaurant called Veritas, but this review is for the full restaurant.
The menu is quite eclectic, hard to describe what type of food, perhaps New American or French Fusion. Wait staff is always outstanding and they know how to pair wine with the food that also takes into consideration your budget and wine preferences.
The best fish (sea bass) I've ever had was a special here, Chef Heinz can't put it on the menu because he can't always get the proper quality. There is a nanosecond between an underdone and overdone fish and almost all restaurants in Augusta overcook fish. Not at La Maison, the bass was moist and had the perfect consistency and flavor.
On the normal menu, I usually have the duck or lamb only because I love these two meats so much and Chef Heinz does them so well. The duck is Maple Leaf Farm Duck Breast, cooked crisp, with Grand Marnier sauce and dried cherry rice pilaf. The lamb is Rack of Lamb, with apricot teriyaki glaze, multi-grain rice blend. A specialty is an ostrich filet that I have heard nothing but good things about. I have had the Smoked Ostrich Carpaccio with arugula, vine-ripe tomato, Parmigiana Regiano shavings, misted with truffle oil and it is excellent.
They also offer buffalo and antelope if you are so inclined, along with filet mignon, salmon and veal. The Lobster Bisque is devine, as is the Mussels Poulette appetizer. The Creme Brulee and Chocolate Chili are both incredible desserts. Bottom line is you can't go wrong here.Listed in: Augusta Real Best Restaurants

Wow, one of the best restaurant I ever had. And simply the best in Augusta. The Kangaroo staket and smoked ostrich meat are good. The desserts are phenomenal. Chocolate Chili is so unique that it's invented right in the restaurant by the chef.

What an awesome experience! La Maison is located in Olde Towne Augusta, in a big old house. It is very pretty. The service and the food are exceptional. The kind of service where they bring you a new fork for every new plate of food!
We (my husband and I) went with the 7course tasting dinner. Honestly we were both worried at first that the "slightly smaller portions" would leave us hungry in the end, but as it turns out the courses were perfectly portioned and left us very satisfied without feeling heavy.
We chose the antelope and austrich dishes among others, since we'd never experienced those meats and my absolute favorite dish was the ostrich carpaccio. It blew us away, it was so good!
The drinks were great, too. Their wine selection is enormous and able to meet even the pickiest wine taste. If you are not a scotch guy, my husband says to steer clear of attempting your taste buds on a 30 dollar shot of 21 year old scotch. Although he said it was good he couldn't finish it. :)
Definitely one of the best meals we have experienced around the country!
PS. They're only open 6pm-9:30pm. -

One of top two meals in my entire life! EVERYTHING was perfection...including the fact that I even got to meet the chef while he was outside picking rosemary from his herb garden. If your in Augusta this place is a MUST!

Very up-scale and fairly expensive (see web site for menus), but the food and the ambiance are great. Service is excellent and the wine list is top notch. Dress up a little so you don't feel out of place, though I think you could get by in jeans at the tapas bar... :-)
4:30-6 only tapas, 6 - "untill" dinner and/or tapas. -

Our favorite place for tapas and wine in the area and a truly rare find in Augusta. Chef Heinz and his wife have both been there every time we go and are so welcoming and personable. The lounge/living room is perfect for more casual evenings and they always have an excellent selection of wines that aren't over priced. I've never had a dish that wasn't perfect. Ostrich carpaccio, tuna tartar, lamb chops, she crab soup... it's hard to go wrong!

Absolutely wonderful. My parents are on the picky side and really love their fine dining, so this was their choice for dinner following my white coat ceremony. This restaurant reminded me a bit of Elizabeth's on 37th in Savannah and it was easily just as good. In fact, I'd say La Maison could hold it's own in just about any major city.
The menu is interesting, specializing in game. A few notables: Ostrich, antelope, and buffalo. The wine list was similarly impressive. Lots of special occasion wines and even a few very rare old Burgundies.
I had the 4 course "light dinner," which offers a soup, sorbet, appetizer (as your entree), and a little dessert sampler. If you're a lighter eater like me, this is definitely the way to go! You get to try a bunch of things and it costs less than one of the entrees on its own. For the heavier eaters, there's a similar 7 course dinner for um.. a bit more.
From what our party had, here are a few must tries: Ostrich, Lobster Bisque, Tuna Nachos, Chocolate Mousse cake. That antelope also looked incredibly good. Maybe I'll have the occasion to try that when I get my MD (haha). -

Yes you can get by in jeans (nice jeans with a nice top) at the tapas bar! I visited from Boston this weekend and I was VERY impressed. If this lounge were in Boston it would charge 2-3x the price and be mobbed. We had ravioli, crabmeat tower, ostrich, bruschetta, lamb chops - all delicious - and for dessert I had the chocolate chili which I think I had dreams about last night. My friends had the mousse cake which they reported to be excellent, I didn't try it because I didn't want anything interfering with the dessert orgasm I was having. They had piano music, wine specials and a nice, relaxed atmosphere (yay couches!!!)... I don't give 5 stars a lot but this place totally deserves it.

Went there with a group of about 30 people for a special event. The staff were so slow it was pathetic. Two hours to get to the entree and then they just stood around waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting. People began to drift out.
We finally asked if they planned to do coffee and desert (since we knew it had been paid for by the sponsors) and the waiter mumbled something about not having much. We decided to wait them out, and it was over thirty minutes later that the coffee appeared. By this time only six or so of us remained, and the staff mumbled something about dessert being ready in another half an hour. I am not convinced they had any desert, and by that time we'd been there going on four hours so we left.
Looking back I can't remember if the food was edible or not, but the service, and the attitude (it's prepaid for a group, we can do what we want and they are stuck with us) turned me off so much that I'll never go back. -

My parents and I went here for my 21st birthday a couple years ago. I felt so special when they came out with a glass of champagne (my first legal glass) and a birthday dessert. That wasn't the best part of the meal though. I loved their food and the fact that I had an opportunity to dress up a little bit. I still remember the experience 2 and a half years later and would definitely return to the restaurant.
