La Luna, I have dreams about you.

Serious, super burrito post-wine tour on a picnic bench right now dreams.

    Carnitas taco on the side.

    Those kind of dreams.

    You know.

I'm only reviewing the little taqueria in the back.  Best kept secret in Napa Valley.  All the locals come here for a great, cheap taco fix.

Apparently the tour companies are aware of this place now as I saw a limo pull up to the front.

Don't expect high class and fancy tables.  You are ordering in the back of a tiny grocery store.  There are picnic tables outside, that's it.  If you're ok with that, settle in for some super yummy TRUE Mexican food.

Carne Asada tacos were nearly perfect.  The super taco comes with meat, cheese, onion, salsa, sour cream, and guac.  Hubby argues that the plain taco, with just meat, onion, and salsa, is superior.  He is wrong.

The only thing that keep it from 5 stars for me is that cantina-style tacos are always served with (and taste best with) a lime.  None were available, unless you wanted to purchase one on the grocery side and cut it yourself.  Boo!

This place is so good, so cheap, and so perfect for soaking up the wine in your belly from your day in Napa. It's actually really good, authentic Mexican food. It's just a little market grocery store, not a restaurant, so don't expect waiters or anything fancy. You go to the taqueria in the back, order, get your food and take it out back to one of the two or three picnic tables. They aren't anything special but are right next to a fenced in vineyard which is still very relaxing and beautiful.. Everything we have had here has been really tasty. They have homemade chips and spicy salsa you can buy separate which we get every time we are here to bring home.  This is a great, cheap option for lunch or dinner while you're in Napa.

I've eaten at La Luna for years and it never disappoints. If I could choose my last meal on Earth, it would be their Carne Asada burrito. I moved to Philly in March, and the only thing I wanted to do on my trip home for a week, was go to La Luna. It was amazing as always.

Discovered this hidden gem on the way back home after a day of wine tasting at V.Sattui last year. I'm very selective when it comes to tacos, and so, the fact that I've been coming here since last year says a lot.

    I normally order the tacos:
    Carnitas tacos
    Chicken tacos
    Steak tacos

You cannot go wrong with either. All the meats are tender, and well seasoned. I love the spice in the sauce, which adds a nice touch of flavor.

    Overall:
Of course, I'm coming back for more, and willing to make that drive to Rutherford just for the tacos.

Additional note: Picnic tables are conveniently located in the front and back of the store. All the better to enjoy your food right then and there with your favorite beverage.

Boyfriend recommended this place for lunch while I was on break at work, so I stopped by. There was plenty of parking space in the lot behind the building, and as I walked inside I saw that it is really a market, like a grocery store, kind of.

I walked to the back and looked at the menu and decided to order a carnitas torta. It was amazingly delicious, the pork was tender, guacamole was delicious, bread was really good too. The people working there were also very nice and dealt with my noobness. I didn't know when or where to pay but they kind of explained the process to me. Everything was also decently priced, completely affordable. You can even buy a huge bag of freshly made tortilla chips for somewhere around $3.

The only thing that peeved me a little bit, which is why I gave it four instead of five stars, is the amount of time I had to wait for my food to be ready. The poor guy who was cooking seemed to be going as fast as he could, but having only one person make all the food slowed down the process a bit... I only had half an hour for lunch, and it took five minutes to drive there, I waited for my food, and by the time I drove back I had to get back to work and couldn't eat it, which was super lame. I was one grumpy girl by the end of the work day!

This little irk aside, I love this place and definitely want to try everything on the menu.

Best Mexican food I have had in years!!

    Fast, cheap, amazing food=5 stars

We got the quesadilla with Carne asada, burrito with shredded pork, and a mixed plate of meats.

The portions are enormous. The food is made fresh in front of you.

This place is for: locals, tourists that want low key good food without the snooty napa attitude. If you want to buy some beer eith your meal.

This place is NOT for: snooty napa types that expect fancy service, an extensive wine lost, and indoor seating.

By far the best food I've had Napa (I know, hard to believe).  I brought out of town guests who turned their nose up at just about every place we went.  When they saw this market, I thought they were going to revolt and fly home.  However, they ate every bite.  One of my guests even refused to share her food after agreeing to split a carnitas taco.  It's not to be missed.

We just did a little stop by to see what all the good words are about. The store reminds me of a little corner store you might find in Mexico. With some authentic spices, and even cookware.
We didn't intend on eating anything. We just wanted to "check it out."
Little did we know the smell of fresh food wafting through the air would lure us into a taste. My husband ordered us a couple of tacos to try. We sat out at the front bench, and found they were delicious! We ordered 1 carnitas and 1 carne asada. What a delicious delight. They were perfectly seasoned and the salsa was fresh and delicious. Our little appetizer before going off to our picnic!

    I am reviewer #33.

Prior to me there were 17 5-stars, 10 4-stars, 4 3-stars and 1 lonely 1-star review. Was he stoned? Did he go to the same place I did? Duuuuuuude, what gives? Taco Bell is better? Are you stoned? It's a grocery store.

The one-star review aside this place is freaking-awesome. Awesome I tell you. Wanna know why?

The staff is chill. We rolled in around 11:15 a.m. They stop making the breakfast burrito at 10:00 a.m. My wife asked nicely if they would make here a breakfast burrito and boo-yeah, no worries. Not even any hesitation. Just a "no problem, would you like ham,. bacon or chourice?"

    The food is insane.
ATTACK OF THE HUGE MONSTER SIZE BURRITOS!
And fresh. So fresh I almost slapped it. No, really, there was a dude chopping up cilatro and making salsa. The burrito itself had to be 10 inches long, 6 incehs wide and 3 inches high. Packed full of fresh, good food.

They make their own nacho chips. Right there! Not greasy. Not too salty. Just full of flavor and with a side order of awesome.

A 12 ounce Diet Coke in a can for $0.68. Sixty-eight cents. LOVE IT.

One downside, they close at 6:00 p.m. Uggh.

    Plenty of parking around back.

And, by the way, I was not imbibing along the wine trail. So Mr. 1-star review, hush. This place is muy bueno.

    Legit quesadillas!

Pretty confident this is a little known secret... one I learned from a local.  Head to the back of the market and wait to order your legit quesadilla.  Not quite sure what the heck M.D. is talkin' about in his review - but as you can tell from the majority of other reviews... it's good.  Or you can wait the 45 minutes for a table at the Rutherford Grill and pay through the nose. ;)

    Two words: carnitas burrito.

This place is a shining star for locals in the otherwise tourist-oriented world that is Napa Valley. It is rare to feel a strong loyalty to a business, yet La Luna has achieved this feat.

Who would have thought that one of the best burritos on the planet would come out of Rutherford, CA.  My boyfriend is from the Napa Valley and this 4th we celebrated by leaving our favorite windy city to do some wine tasting, BBQ'ing and R&R in the warm sun.

After a morning/afternoon of visiting wineries, we were both starving and in need of some good grubbage. He took me to his favorite childhood taqueria, La Luna Taqueria. I was a little skeptical since it was in the back of a little grocery store but those thoughts were quickly proved misguided.

We split a chicken super burrito because he assured me they were huge (he was right). It was EPIC!! I have no idea what made it so good...maybe it was the tender roasted chicken, the crispy crunchy lettuce, or the delicious pinto beans. Whatever it was it works. I left completely satisfied and wanting much, much more.

This place is utterly awful, the great reviews here must be the result of too much wine tasting coupled with a lack of alternatives... oh wait, there's at least a dozen great taquerias in the valley... this just isn't one of them.

It's a typical roadside mexican convenience store with a mediocre (at best) taco counter in it, if this gets 5 starts from people I wonder what would earn one star?  Are there no decent Mexican restaurants where the reviewers here are from?  Trust me there's TONS of better mexican places than this in the valley.  Tacos La Playita, Taqueria Tres Hermanos, Tacos Michoacan, Villa Corona (thought it's not really mexican food IMO) hell even the 7 or 8 taco trucks that roam around the city of Napa are better than this.  Shoot, I'd hit taco bell long before going back to this place, my food was that bad.

I normally give a spot 3 tries before I decide it's no good.  This place was so awful that once was one too many for me.

I was famished when we made the mistake of pulling in.  I ordered 3 tacos al pastor, and suffice it to say I was still hungry when I left because I could barely choke down one of the awful things.  Only good manners prevented me from spitting it out towards the end.  It was absolutely the greasiest, most flavorless pastor I've ever had, yet most of it was burnt so it was also crunchy and dry at the same time.  Did I mention flavorless?  An embarrassing overabundance of hot sauce did nothing to cover the fact that the meat was just plain not good.

There's very little seating so we got to "enjoy" our meal perched on a curb in the parking lot, how classy.  I wonder if they've heard of picnic tables?  There's a handy spot where 5 or 6 of these confusing contraptions could be erected, but instead there's just garbage cans, gravel and Corona caps strewn about in the dirt.  Nice.

Trust me, skip this place and just go across the street to Rutherford Grill and wait for a table.  The food there is AWESOME, not to mention consistent, I've eaten there at least 15 times and it's always good.  There's a reason you have to wait 45 minutes for a table at Rutherford Grill, not a shill, I don't have anything to do with them other than appreciate how bad they make the competition look.

3.5 stars. This is a similar review like I did for azteca market.  I think in my opinon, this place is a little bit better, it's hidden away but there's no place to sit which is why we end up at azteca market but then again you can just go outside sit on the curb and eat next to the pretty grape vines.

carne asada super burrito- can't go wrong.  I DO remember this though- it's GOOD.

    WAY better than villa corona.

Let's start with the bad, because,  well,  there is literally only one thing that fits in that category ... the al pastor. Its not terrible but I've had much better elsewhere in the valley.

Everything else is fantastic!  Having worked across the street,  this place was a staplse lunchtime spot and the line out the door attests to it. The tortas are AMAZING! I was not a big torta fan until trying La Luna's but they changed my mind completely. The burritos are big and packed full of everything you could want in a burrito. The quesadillas are thick and way more filling than you might imagine. Seafood from a convenience store?  A little sketcht sounding, I agree, but the camarones a la Diabla are as fresh as can be. Nothing on the menu is bad so give everything a try.

Admittedly, I'm here on a foodie vacation. Admittedly, I've been out wine tasting all day. Admittedly, I'm buzzed. Admittedly, this is the best f*cking Mexican food I've had in a very long time.

After visiting three wineries, our driver took us here on his recommendation for a casual meal before our next destination. We ordered two carne asada Super Burritos and the third person ordered pork and carne asada tacos. The carne asada burrito was amazing -- the steak had a crispy charred flavor that was amazing inside the handmade tortilla with homemade salsa, rich sour cream, and fresh guacamole. I could eat about five more of these burritos today if I really put my mind to it, and not because I want to stuff myself, but because they are that good.

Don't miss this place in the Napa Valley. It's not fancy, it doesn't raise your credentials as a foodie, but it will knock your socks off.

This place is great!... for Napa. Good prices, decent mexican food...for Napa. My tacos al pastor were a little left for wanting, overwhelmed with spices to mask the quality of the meat. I've had tastier fast food at El Pueblo. It's a good fall back if you can't get a table at Rutherford Grill and you're really hungry. There's also a Dean and Deluca Market up the street for a quick bite to eat.
If you honestly think this is the best Mexican food in California, you've probably been eating at Taco Bell.

Not only does La Luna possibly have the best Mexican food in all of Napa Valley...it might be the best in all of Northern California.

    There, I said it.

I seem to also notice that the good Mexican places up here tend to be associated with markets. They also tend to be less expensive when inside of a market. Why this is, one could speculate, but what I do know is, La Luna is fantastic and kicks behind and takes names.

Back in September, after lunch when we were full, my dad and I stopped here and each got a taco...ya know...just to squeeze in a taste before continuing the journey. Very impressed after 2-3 bites of Carne Asada goodness.  We resolved to return for an actual lunch next time.

Such an occassion presented itself recently, so after a 3 hour visit at Rudd Winery (review forthcoming), we made our way to La Luna. The place is clean, it's a fairly decent sized market. It seems out of place in some sense for an area like Napa but in a sense it's a welcome and inexpensive respite from the delicious yet pricey (and perhaps stuffy at times) haute-cuisine you come to expect from wine country.

At it's heart, it's a Mexican market - they sell milk, pastries, calling cards, everything you'd expect. There isn't much in the way of seating but there are 3 tables outside in the front, one in the back - nice to have at least something.

But it's truly about the food here.

La Luna is no frills, simple, delicious Mexican food that is just quality - quality from the outside with a delicious, slightly grilled chewy tortilla - to the inside with fresh grilled meat and cilantro, onion.  All is created fresh there, as you'd hope, and there is plenty of salsa available for purchase if you'd like to take home a container of one of the various flavors with various degrees of spiciness. The guacamole is top notch and they are generous with it. They will make you a burrito with no rice or beans too ;)

The meat is the real star here - the carne asada is grilled right there behind the counter and smells of joy and wonder emanate forth with heavenly aroma. Even the boiled chicken (I universally prefer pollo asado) was good.  The Al Pastor was amazing, and the carnitas was right up there with the best: tender, juicy and not very fatty tasting at all (reality may be different).

Lunch for 3 for $25 in Napa? You heard it here. Had to get a t-shirt too. Had to.

Andy M.'s picture really tells it all - you can essentially sit in the back parking lot (or crouch, whatever) of this place and will be separated by merely a chain link fence from rows and rows of what are undoubtedly among the most prized vineyards in the world - vines whose roots extend down into that legendary "Rutherford Dust."

To me that really epitomizes the experience of being at this place - you've stepped into what is a very familiar, rather typical looking mundane convenience store setting and then you head out the back door toward their one picnic table...you are immediately reminded of where you are. Then you take a bite of your food, experience the quality and are reminded again. You're temporarily stuck in this paradox - between simple yet delicious food from a market, and the luxury and opulence associated with the culture of the region.

If for no other reason, this place is worth experiencing.

The ladies at the Conn Creek tasting room recommended La Luna to us for a quick bite to eat and I was grateful!

La Luna is a cute little market with a taqueria in the back. I got a veggie super burrito and it was delicious! Fresh cilantro, sour cream, guac, pinto beans (that's the only type they have), tomatoes, letttuce - YUM.

Definitely recommend it if you need some quick (and cheap) food to fill your stomach during a day of wine tasting. Probably the best deal you'll get in the Napa Valley!

I came across La Luna Market while looking to buy a french baguette. Taking a turn at the Rutherford grill, there was La Luna on the right side of the street. While the closest thing they had to a baguette was sliced bread, tortillas and Mexican pan, La Luna had the most extensive Mexican food selection I've seen around... better than any place I've been to in the Mission.

While I was searching the aisles I kept going back to items to see what they were...fig and persimmon preserves, spices, baking ingredients, dried goods a ton of things I've never seen before. I was in a rush, so only had a glimpse at the burrito counter in the back...which from what I'm hearing has the best burritos around (they were even highlighted in Travel and Leisure Magazine!).

I'm headed back for a Burrito and stocking up the pantry with buys from La Luna.

Added plus, they have parking lot around back.

Wow, a taqueria inside a meat market?!? thank you baby jesus for this glorious moment!!!

I have always had good luck with places like this, and La Luna pretty much proves my point. I mean, you can shop for milk, eggs, buy freshly made salsa, and still get an amazing burrito too??? La Luna is pretty legit.

I tried the Carne Asada Super Burrito and it conquered mee :/ I tried my hardest to fill every space in my belly with this delicious delicious portion meat, sour cream, beans, and guacamole wrapped in a tortilla! but failed. A co worker of mine ordered the Al pastor and assured me that it was pretty damn amazing as well.

But can La luna get any better? yes! they also have Tortas, Tacos and quesadillas as well and according to the people standing in line, they are all pretty awesome! and Huge Portions!  And to top it off you sit outside in the parking lot to eat and have an amazing view of wine country!

    Thank you La Luna!

Finding cheap, yet delicious food in Napa is liking finding a needle in a hay factory.

Fortunately, a (positive) result of the huge social class divide is La Luna. On the outside is an unassuming market. On the inside are some fantabulous burritos, tortas and tacos. Catholic or Vegetarian? Looks like they have a cool meatless menu just in time for Lent.  This place beats out any taco truck you might find in the area.

If filling up on hearty Mexican fare wasn't enough, check out the fresh salsas and other goodies stocked on the store shelves. Delicious.

Bottom line: If you've guzzled you're funds away on some primo booze, come to La Luna and eat to your hearts content.

Long ago when I worked/lived on that side of the hill, this was a 2 or 3 time a week stop for me, and it was always for the salami with jalapeno quesadillas although their quesadilla suizas were pretty mean too - those had my heart.

now with being gone for several years, I find myself occasionally having to work back over in that neck of the woods, and instead of hitting up any other place -- where do I go?

that's right - la luna.  Why?  cause it doesn't get any better than that.

I know, when you first walk in, it seems a little bitch sketchy, the wine is like 8 years old and covered in dust and spiderwebs on the bottom shelf, and you are thinking.. but Rutherford Grill is just across the street..

just go with it - and stay, and order yourself some of the most amazing mexican food you will ever have.

ps - the 'elegant' dining picnic table outside is excellent for people watching as well.

If it were based on food alone 5 stars is in order...this place is a hole in the wall type of place about a mile from the Robert Mondavi winery...excellent food, lots of flavor and good prices to boot. It is a Mexican market so no eating places inside, but has picnic tables with benches outside. The Carne asada sandwich and burrito were really good. Nice place to take a lunch after a day of wine tasting.

Consistently my favorite burrito spot, though admittedly that's partially due to the pain in the ass for me to get there (when I worked in St. Helena it was 30 min run round trip with traffic, now that I work down valley it's 45+ min). Still, definitely worth it. Pretty damn good salsa as well.

You'll definitely look like a local if you stop here wine tasting rather than some shitty tourist spot.

This place rivals South San Francisco and LA for good authentic Mexican fare. That is from the real tacos (read - two mini corn tortillas, carne asada, cilantro, onions, and hot sauce) all the way to the California grown super burritos with the typical "aftermath" but damn it is sooo good going down. (the real burrito aficionados will know what I mean by "aftermath")

The carne asada was perfectly carmelized and assembled with care. The only thing keep it from 5 star territory was the lack of heat in the hot sauce, a lime, and radish.

Otherwise this is a GREAT place especially if you are tired of the typical $100 lunches in the froo-froo places in The Valley. It was so good we went twice. This is were real people get real food.

I love the tacos, freshly grilled meat with onion, cilantro and hot sauce on two soft corn tortillas.  Simple but good!

When in Napa Valley, and in need of great Mexican food at a bargain price, La Luna is the place to go.

Authentic Mexican food by authentic Mexicans. Perhaps the only deal you'll find in Napa.

Being from Texas I am always looking for a good taco.  I mean come on Texas makes the best tacos ever!  or do they?  This small Mexican market does a mean taco.  comparable to some of the legendary taco stands of Texas.  I would pass this tiny market daily and never wondered in until a friend pushed me to go.  I was a little skeptical because who goes to napa to eat a taco?  I thought I love to dine and to waste one of my many meals on a taco stand in Napa no less was just a waste of time, but i was wrong!  I would consider this a must stop for any person in napa/rutherford area.  forget spending 50 bucks on lunch when you can spend 5 and have an even more amazing meal.  ok its not rutherford grill or le toque (which ironically is right across the street) but if your looking for something off the beaten track of napa's many luxurious eateries la luna is a dont miss.

It's a market, it's a taqueria, it's everything you need! Excellent tacos and burritos. Wonderful selection of corner store goods and Latin stuffs. Everyone who works here is friendly to boot.

This place rocks, nice little gem hidden among the expensive food of Rutherford, right across the street from Rubicon Estate and just opposite the street of Rutherford Grille, great food for a super price, $5-$7 for most of the burritos, quesadilas, etc.  Very tasty, and very convenient.

On top of being a great local source for limited grocery items, La Luna has a tasty food station in the back.  They sell an assortment of Mexican dishes, which can be created with a variety of meats.  The carnitas is the best!  Everything is delicious and reasonably priced.
