This the awesomest beach! My favorite. Good crowd, but doesn't get over crowded, great surfing. Good people.
They have surf shops that rent boards if you're learning. Lots of volleyball games and jogging. Some BBQ's, but they have a rule against fire on the sand. They even have a parking lot! :-)
Great surf too. :-)

If you want to find yourself in the San Diego you expect out of a tourist book, then the La Jolla Shores is in. Filled with tourists spotted from the surrounding hotels, the Shores is always packed to the brim during the summer months with vacationers, while during the remaining sunny days of fall, filled with local students. It's a beginning spot for surfing, so people aren't going to yell at you if you run them over in the waves.
Though parking can be a struggle, it's easier to just
In wandering we happened upon this beach and oh mah gawd is it beautiful at sunset!!! Of course parking is a beezy but what do you expect?
I really want to cayak and check out the underwater habitat, because I've heard it's phenomenal. There are firepits, but good luck laying claim on one if you aren't there at the crack of dawn!
I'd say this is a lot more family-friendly of a beach and is a lot more calm. There is also a really nice bike/running path that I'll too have to check out one of these days...In due time I suppose.

If perfection had a picture in the dictionarly, this beach would be it. From the meticulously manicured greens with bbq pits, to clean bathrooms, to the sprawling beach with great sand opening up to a warm water ocean.. Who could ask for more. Turn around and you see beautiful mountains and cute cottages and homes splattered around the place. Eye candy everywhere... I haven't been to a beach this great since I was in Hawaii. I sat back and enjoyed a full glass of Chimay (FYI, you are not supposed to have alcohol or glass containers at the beach, so you have to be discreet) and watched the sunset. After one Sunset at La Jolla Shores my life is definitely more complete. On a practical side, there is also plenty of parking... I can't say enough good things. Definitely worht a visit. If you can, watch the sunset. I guarantee it will be unforgettable.

This beach is witness to a beautiful creation, whether you believe in that or not. Somebody had to manufacture gorgeous lawns, beachy sand, the wall, the lifeguard tower, the giant playground, the warm water, great waves, slow tide, easy parking (unless you go at peak times, duh), nice locals, rich homeless people, nice benches, mellow fish, lots of kids, and cloud cover til noon!
I had a wild hair up my boot yesterday and decided to take the fam out there today. It turned out to be a wonderful time, we even got to invite some neighbors that ended up making the trip. I packed some lunches and drinks and we was on our way! Found front row parking (I know I always mention that and it is important to me whether I'm with kids or without) and lathered up the sunscreen on everyone. I always miss a few spots and get funky tan lines. Fun.
This time, I brought my small shovel so we could dig to China. We almost made it, but it was high tide so we succumbed to the ocean and turned it into our own giant jacuzzi. My son was rad and started doing backflips down the mountain of sand into his newly excavated pool. I'm glad he didn't break his neck.
Anyways, the only downfall of this picturesque spot of our city is that they don't have showers - unless you sneak onto hotel property...
Make it a day and rent a Kayak at one of the many rental spots down the street. If you bring a group here anytime for a party or something, send someone early to secure an area. Wisdom.

It's almost impossible to find the parking spot from noon till six pm, no matter what day of the week. There are lots of people all the time.
Although it's a great place for kayaking, surfing and snorkeling.

i have a weakness for beaches... esp in the evening, but who doesn't?
you can do whatever you want but you can't get me to open up when you take me to the beach. i become extremely vulnerable and i lose a side of me and will literally shut you out... so bring on the wine, and maybe ill open up a can of worms.. :)
anyways... SD... is thee place for beaches.... and la jolla shores is definitely one of them. ive been here 2x. one late in the evening around 10 and another when it was really crowded, 2ish. this is definitely not the place to come during the day time because they have all these kayak races going on, and other aquatic sports...i swear, its absolutely a mad zoo... take it up aother notch, and you visit the shores around 10. not only are you in for a treat but they even have swings so you can get your chilldhood side in you....and if you're lucky, you can probably get on them!
i have to admit, parking is a bit hectic... and remember to read the signs... its kinda confusing. lots of 15min zones, reg meters and while others dont even have signs... although, i do have a secret getaway, this place isn't all that bad ...

Beautiful, big beach but crowded with tourist! Parking is always a frustrating experience here. Once on the beach though the water is very clear, there is hardly any seaweed and the sand is soft. This is where a lot of people do their kayaking and snorkeling it seems. I'm told it's a great place to learn how to surf because the waves are small and people are friendly.
La Jolla Shores is THE quintessential Fantastic SoCal beach!
The sand is clean and light and the location is on a spacious stretch of pristine coastline. It has well-maintained restrooms and showers, warm water for most of the year, and is also wheelchair accessible. Add to that, the surfing here rocks for just about any level. Sure the lineup gets crowded, but the paddle out is easy and if you give it time you'll get a wave. It's also cool that the break is deep enough so that it cooks here on just about any tide!
I do want to send special recognition out to the lifeguard professionals at La Jolla Shores. In addition to being expert swimmers and highly qualified water and first aid rescuers, they also have to manage and interact with a broad range of people. That said, some beachgoers can be totally clueless and sometimes downright ungracious toward the duties of these well-trained safety individuals. Over the past few months surfing here, I have observed just a few of the following interactions between people and the lifeguards:
Clueless Beachgoer #1- "Excuse me, lifeguard, would you mind watching my kids while I run to get sandwiches?" "No?!" Well, what else is it that you do?"
Clueless Beachgoer #2-"Get off me man! I'm not littering, cigarette butts are biodegradable!"
Clueless Beachgoers #'s 3 & 4- Two girls on body boards, last week, after getting caught in a rip current, pulled out way past the break, and having been towed back to shore by a lifeguard on a jet ski, "That was fun! Let's head out again and hitch another ride back!"
So here's to the start of yet another terrific summer people! Go out there and enjoy the beach! If you have a chance, wave "Hi" and say "Thanks" to the water safety professionals who are watching out for you, whether you know it or not, at La Jolla Shores! They, and this beach, truly Rock Awesomely!

Here's our typical progression of going to La Jolla Shores.
We're amped up to go because your friends are gonna be there, there's tons of people there, and you know it's a great place to chill and enjoy yourself.
By the time we get there, you realize that parking sucks, the crowds (unless you're there to meet people) actually prevents us from enjoying the beach, and if we wanted to use a fire pit, we would have had to show up before the sun peeks it's head above the horizon.
Finally when we get home, you realize we could have gone to Del Mar, PB or OB; where it's more pleasant to people watch.
So why go here? Location. Aside from parking, if you want to get your tan on and maybe dip in the water for a little, this place isn't bad. Just be prepared to walk a ways to your car.

This beach is always crowded!! I rarely ever come here except for late night bonfires when parking is always a plenty. Head over to the cheese shop get yourself a sandwhich and sit on the beach and enjoy!
Breathtaking beauty.
For the amount of ppl coming through this place, it is kept really clean. No trash on beach. Water is crystal clear. A lot to see and do. There's so much wildlife all around you from seals to birds to hermit crabs. It's amazing climbing cliffs and rocks. The view you get is awesome. I wish I had a wet suit and some goggles to check out other sea creatures on the deeper end of the water. Many activities to choose from: kayak, surf, scuba, bbq, hike, shop.
However, there isn't a lot of beach area for lounging. It comes in small areas due to the natural rocks and cliffs that surround it. The sand is somewhat on the course side.
After lounging on the beach, you can hit downtown La Jolla and enjoy all the shops and coffee/froyo places. I LOVE THIS PLACE!
No NorCal beach can compare.
I love this beach!!! So far this is the cleanest beach I've ever been to in the state of Cali besides Hawaii of course! It was pretty pack but not pack to the point where you can't sit.. We did go on a saturday so I can't say much. The water is clean and nice. The waves isn't has hard or big, but later in the evening it got a bit big and hard but it's okay.. I love soft small waves I'm more relax :) I usually freak out when I go out far but for some reason here I'm not I went out pretty far and It was just perfect.. I guess because it was clean and I was able to see whats in the water LOL.. We BBQ relax, chill, talked.. It was just perfect!! But they need more bathrooms tho the lines were super long only 4 were working outta 6.. I saw a lot of people kayaking, surfing, and snorkeling pretty awesome.. Maybe next time when I come back here I'll do one of that :)
Parking was BADDDDDDDDD. You will just need to find street parking. Everyone has their own short cut going into the place. I turned onto something something Ono from La Jolla Shore Road. also note that when if you don't care about the scenary driving down La Jolla Shore Road, there is a little short cut that go right pass Birch Aquarium. I used to drive the UCSD SIO (Scripps Institute Of Oceanography) shuttle and that's how we get down to the UCSD SIO pier.
Now there are the grass area and the beach area. There are fire rings for bonfire in the beach area; and in the grass area, there are some BBQ charcoal stove. Bring your own tent because you will find your 100$ tent is well worth it... (well, of course you go to the beach often enough).
Big winds out there the day I went, but you might want to consult other posts on surf level, wind speed, or weather in that area.
****WARNING****
Here's a Facebook '25 Random Things You Don't Know About Me' moment.
I don't like sand. I mean, why is so nice to lay out at the beach, but it sucks so badly to have sand in your bed? It's coarse and annoying and...well, sandy. It gets everywhere, especially in your swimsuit and that's not fun.
That being said, I love La Jolla Shores beach. It's the quintessential Southern California beach. From the water all you can see is golden sand, swaying palm trees, craggy hills and the very expensive homes of the ultra-riche. Out there in the surf you're transported away from the world and riding a wave while looking in at this view is absolutely spectacular! I can't think of a more scenic place to surf.
I'm slowly getting geared up for long days at the beach. I just bought a surfboard and wetsuit and Astrid and I just got beach chairs and towels for relaxing in the sun, soaking up the rays and reading a good book or listening to some great music.
The people watching at La Jolla Shores is awesome! On any given day you'll find:
1. Nouveaux-Riche people walking their crazed Maltese/ Shih Tzu/ Pomeranian/ Poodle
2. Families with screaming children heading out for a day in the sun
3. Alien SCUBA divers shuffling across the beach in their gear
4. Severely hungover UCSD students
5. Hoards of loud seagulls that steal your lunch
6. Leathery-skinned elderly people
You'll definitely find me out here this summer, slowly working my way toward melanoma. Hopefully I'll be a better surfer by then!

An amazing beach for sunset wading and sand castle crushing. This beach is delightfully devoid of the sheer mountains of fly attracting seaweed that PB and Windansea tend to have. Overall: my favorite La Jolla Beach, despite the fact that it is too far for me to walk there.

Oh La Lolla shores, how do i miss the days.
The days of being able to dawn patrol your lovely ankle snapper, but fun breaks before any boogeyboarders or kayak-ers tried to muscle in on the territory. Not that I am any great savant status genius when it comes to surfing mind you, It's just that there are days when you can hunt for parking for an hour, and of course the whole beach is lined up pismo beach umbrella style with beached white whales of all points foreign.
I love shores for it's convenience, meaning the ability to still get some good easy sets in before work on a weekday, and it gets my four stars for nostalgia. I, like so many others, learned the basic ways of the water here. Shores is great during off season, but from may 15th to September 15th, I will not go after 9 am.

Oh, beach.
I never appreciated you while I had you. I never understood how important you were in my life, and how I would miss you so! The days of teenage driving, of meeting friends on your strands, and then spending hours doing nothing but enjoying life!.. Where have those times gone?.. Why must you remain the same while so many of us must change?
I miss you. Terribly.

The Shores is definitely one of the prettiest beaches in the San Diego area! It's great for bonfires, picnics, barbeques, kayaking, and just lounging around. It's the quintessential California beach. You can even spot some little sharks in the water, if you're lucky (tiny sharks that won't hurt you)!!
The downer is that it gets super crowded once the weather gets warmer...but there is plenty of parking in the big (free) lot or on the residential streets around the beach :)
A very crowded beach. Parking in the beach residential area can be tricky sometimes and fender-bender prone but its to be expected around the beach areas. Waves are usually perfect for body boarding as well.
I love this beach. There is a huge parking lot that quickly fills up so get there early (along with the scuba divers) or head over around noon when they are finishing up their diving adventures.
This place has it all, there is a kids play area, grassy area for BBQ's and parties, a long shoreline and a slowly sloping shore that is great for beginning divers. The bathrooms are brand new and well maintained (this is LJ after all!). Shower area also available to use to rinse off after a dip in the Pacific.
There are local surf shops and stores to browse in for those tourists as well. You can snorkel, surf (not the best place to catch waves), kayak, scuba dive and swim here. I love this place!

LOVE THIS BEACH! This has been one of my favorite beaches around San Diego since I was a kid. Really clean, family friendly and lots of cool little shops and restaurants near by. The scenery is amazing! A great place to go on a date. Bring a picnic and your set :)
Parking isn't too bad as long as you get there early in the morning or later in the day around 4-5.

The rating for this beach will have to vary depending on what you actually want to do here.
If you come down with your family and just want to have a nice beach day I'm sure it's probably a 4, because you can hang out in the shallow waters or throw a frisbee or get tan then head over to Jeff's around the corner for some hamburgers and hotdogs. You might even wanna check out the view over top of the cliffs if you haven't already. It's a place for ucsd vegetation study i believe? (correct me if i'm wrong) but its got an awesome view if you can find the secret road that let's you in ;-)
If you came down here to surf...you probably can find somewhere better to do it. This is a tourist trap beach and the water isn't ideal. It's always got seaweed on the sand and in the white wash. in which case this beach gets a 2 star rating.
If you came down here just to hang out with your friends and bbq then have a bonfire at night it's a really chill beach that everyone seems to love coming to. And at nighttime you can't see the seaweed anymore so it's not distracting and you'll probably have a really fun time. In this case it'll probably get a 4 star rating as well.
Overall 3 star beach.

I love coming to this beach! I have a two year old so I need a fun, safe place. We have a little secret spot here, not going to share with you, I can lay and get a tan while my son builds sandcastles and swims in the calm water. Its like our own private beach where we come and feel like we have traveled far for a vacation, when its just 10 minutes away!
In the weekend there's some local activities, a local band/group, lemonade and hot dog stands. Someone always has a volleyball game going on. Kites flying in the wind, the kayaks and snorkelers out in the ocean.
I must admit, I purchased a snorkeling set and have been out a few times, it is a little difficult with the water splashing all around you, but once you get to the calm waters its easier.
Yes parking is a pain in the butt, it can be hard if you get there at the wrong time. So get there early, or late (like someone said) if not be patient, or last time we invited my bro in law and he said he found a parking lot place, he paid $10. Only flaw!

Shores. Nice beach. Big free parking lot (though it does get full during peak hours) plus street parking. If you have a big group, come early and stake out some space.
There's a grass area with small charcoal grills, and there's a small playground area for kids.
For some reason, the main restrooms were closed when I last visited (5/28/2008). Not a huge deal, because additional facilities were available about 150 yards south.
A little windy/chilly the day I visited, but the weather is usually pretty great. People say it only rains five days a year in SD... lies! But SD weather is indeed usually good.

Grass meets beach. Great for picnics, bonfires and large get-togethers. We have a lot of UCSD functions here because of the large parking lot, GRASS, bonfire pits, BBQ's, soft sand and convenience from the campus. We've even set up a slack-line between two trees with no problems.
If I were alone or in a small group, I would not come to this beach as it is a bit too crowded. Skimboarding and surfing are decent, but nothing special; either too calm or too rough.

Actually a 3.5
The place is pretty much always crowded during the summer but is a pretty fun beach.
it is perfect to go running since it is so flat and pretty long. However, this can be difficult when it is packed. Also, parking can be tricky, but if you drive up into the neighborhoods you can usaully find some street parking.
I went "surfing" for the first time here and it was super chill, which I loved. No one likes to be yelled at by the diehards, especially when you're not sure what you are doing. Lots o beginners though so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for experts.

My favourite all around beach next to the Bu. I love that after a morning of surfing, I can skate down the boardwalk & up to the shops for a bite to eat or take a gander at some bikinis. The lifeguards set up a flag defining a section for surfers & waders, which is nice so that my friends who don't surf can frolic. And I love that you can go rent a kayak and go paddling around the kelp forests, then jump out of the kayak to snorkel with the leopard sharks. There are also diving outfits at the cove so you can get your certification on & go find Nemo.
The lineup is also girl friendly as the shore is home to the girls surfing school, Surf Diva. So wahines can own and stoke each other out....you hear a lot of woohoo-ing for sure!
Parking gets really hectic in the summer so you have to get there early otherwise prepare to trek a few blocks down from the surrounding neighborhood. Driving in & out of the cove is absolutely stunning. You drive into this gem of a beach and it still takes your breath away when you leave it.

As a nerd who lived in SD for college, my advice: skip class more often and go here.
Man, I miss this beach. Great any time of the year. Spring's the best b/c it's starting to warm up and not everyone's there yet. It's packed in the summer but I always found a place to throw down a towel. I'm strictly a sunbather (nap in the daytime with sunshine? heck yes!) but apparently surfing's great there too.
There are pits for bonfires, but claim one early because they're all taken by nightfall. Or, do as my friends and I did: stay around like vultures and swoop in when a party leaves theirs. A lot of college orgs arrange bonfires, so it can get crowded at night in the fall. The parking lot is ok or there's street parking. Good luck trying to park in the summer, I take the bus then. Plus, the lot actually closes at night; once, a security guard actually checked on us to make sure we were leaving.

I love the beach, especially during the summer.
What can be better than:
The smell of sunscreen and tanning oil.
Sound of waves crashing onto the beach.
Fresh, salty ocean air blowing in your face.
Crystal blue skies and planes flying overhead.
Getting sand blown in your mouth and then crunching the little grains.
The hot sand burning your feet while trying to seek refuge on a blanket.
The little flies that hover over the seaweed and irritate the hell out of you.
Watching the babies get their little diapers filled with water and then have their tush get exposed.
Never underestimate the power of the Pacific....
Trying to bodyboard and getting pulled into rough waves and running into surfers and pissing them off.
Having cold, hard waves hit you and getting slammed into the sand bar.
Getting bruises and rashes, and having your ribs hurt the following morning.
A lifeguard swimming out to inform you that you're caught in a rip current.
Nailing your timing and feel like you're one with nature while riding a strong wave all the way to shore...
What a blast...

My favorite beach to take visitors to other than Mission Beach. I didn't believe the little girl I nannied for when she told me she snorkeled here, but sure enough, there is plenty to see in the cove. Definitely a fun place for an underwater camera.
There's not a ton of actual beach to "beach" on, but there are grassy areas above for laying out and having a sand-free picnic, and there are a few trees scattered about for shade if needed, so the trade-off is rather comparable at least.
Tip: carpool (parking sucks) and bring your own food/drinks if you can. Those shops in La Jolla didn't get to where they are by giving people a cheap lunch special.

The Shores is my favorite beach in San Diego, hands down.
I went through a crazy long-board stage in my early 20's. Sometimes, I'd be in the water twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the evening. I'm gonna sound like a total hippie here, but water IS life and it's really an amazing feeling being "one" with the ocean. Try doing an "evening session" sometime...you're in the water, chillin' on your board as the bright, orangish sun disappears into the vast pacific. Gives me chills just thinking about it.
Unfortunately, these kind of surf spots are few-and-far between in Dego. Try going to the Cliffs, PB, or Windansea sometime; You'd find the amount of testosterone in the water would make even Barry Bond's giant, melon-shaped head spin. So many "bros" with bad attitudes and frosted tips infiltrate the waters and take all of the soul out of the time-honored sport.
La Jolla Shores is a completely different story. The surfer "bro-brah" types would never be caught dead at a place like The Shores. It's typically reserved for beginners and old dudes. I don't care, I'd rather hang out with a fat 55 year-old guy and catch 3-footers than some 22 year-old punk-ass from PB any day.
If you're into soul surfing, but not into getting sucker-punched by a guy driving a lifted Ford F-350 with "back-off" mud-flaps, than La Jolla Shores is the place for you.

Growing up, this was one of my favorite spots to chill out with family and friends.
Parking is a pain in the royal ass during peak seasons. The folks from Arizona aka "Zonies" will invade so plan accordingly.
Go to the Cove to hang with the snobs or head down to the Shores and hang with the slobs.
Like a bucket of fried chicken, La Jolla Shores will always have a special place in my heart.

My favorite San Diego beach...
Yes, parking can be difficult but not if you don't go there when the tourists and everyone else does (holidays, weekends... Hell, holiday weekends.).
The waves aren't really that big but it does have its moments. I really favor this beach because it's just down the way from Scripps and I keep thinking in the back of my mind that if they keep an eye in particular on any beach, it would be this one. Heck, even the kelp doesn't pile up too bad there. The seafloor is smooth, sandy and even and the water is about as clear as anywhere else in San Diego.
There is a house there that was revamped just a few years ago. It is the 1st house just North of the park/lot itself. I shall own you someday for I covet you in ways that are shameless and unhealthy... You tease me with your luscious beach-frontage and promises of BBQ... Ah, yes... someday mine you shall be!!!

I was here in the summer, on a beauuutiful sunny Saturday with just enough clouds to make the temperature PERFECT... The beach really does look like what you'd expect from a San Diego beach - postcard reality, if you will.
This beach has massive potential for great ocean fun, which we would have had if it wasn't for the bazillion people per square inch of sand, and if I didn't swim out pretty far into the ocean and a friendly kayaker didn't paddle up to tell me that some man was seriously hurt by a sting ray earlier that same day.
Maybe it's less treacherous on a weekday...

This place is awesome! Great place to have a picnic too! It can get a bit crowded and the downfall is the parking. You may have to walk a ways to get down to the beach, but it is so worth it. There are nice views and along the way you can see these maginificent houses on your way there.
I learned how to bodyboard here for the first time and I went everyday during the summer a few years ago. This is definitely a place you can chill out at and have some icecream and go for a nice swim! =)
