UCSD put us up in the full suites here during our interview days. It was such a beautiful location, right next to the thrashing blue sea...too bad I had barely any time to enjoy the view, much less head to the beach. Plus, it rained on day three :(
Like another interviewee mentioned, it felt like we were living in opulence. The room came with two queen sized beds (my first time sleeping in a queen sized bed alone!), a large roll-out futon in the living room, two TVs, a microwave, a refrigerator, a stove, a balcony, a bathroom with a tub and a shower, a pack of delicious complimentary cookies...it was more spacious than my apartment. I guess it was part of the wooing stage!
But, it was not all happy happy utopia. When we set up our third roommate's futon, I found this stain on a sheet. It looked like a pizza stain or something--really gross.
Then, our room turned out to be "haunted." Several times during the night, the alarm radio turned on and off, causing a bleary-eyed me to start in bewilderment at the loud country music. In the morning my roommate asked me if it really happened. "Was I dreaming?" "No you were not," I told her.
She mentioned that the lights kept coming on and off during the night...at first she thought it was me, but then she realized that it was her light that was doing so by itself.
Besides the haunting, we also suffered from a difficult sink. It was impossible to control and I required a towel (for grip) to turn it off. The facilities in the suite were obviously quite old. Even the TV was hard to use.
We had complimentary Continental breakfast, but like my dear warned, "Continental breakfast" is another way to say COLD breakfast. Bagels, pre-packaged muffins, and the like...but at least they had Tazo Tea!
That being said, the service was absolutely splendid. The directions the front guy dude gave me regarding how to get to my room completely blew past my mind (it's like a maze really), but he was really nice. However, I cannot give 4 stars to a hotel in which internet is inaccessible! (Besides at the "Rooftop")

You pay for the view. The hotel rooms/amenities are not classy. Bathrooms are old. ELEVATORS especially to UPPER FLOORS CONSISTENTLY DID NOT OPERATE; STAFF reiterated the CONSTANT problems with the elevators. We had to take the long flight of stairs. JOANNA, the MANAGER, LACKED HONESTY, CLASS, AND MORALS. JOANNA, MANAGER OF LA JOLLA COVE SUITES, IS EXTREMELY DISRESPECTFUL, DISHONEST, AND UNPROFESSIONAL. The owner needs to find a PROFESSIONAL MANAGER WHO WILL TREAT THEIR CUSTOMERS WITH RESPECT & PROFESSIONALISM & DIGNITY. JOANNA LACKS THE FINESSE REQUIRED TO RUN AN ESTABLISHMENT IN LA JOLLA. JOANNA SHOULD BRING HER POOR AND UNPROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE TO MOTEL 6 INSTEAD WHERE HER TYPE BELONGS.
La Jolla Cove Suites has two key qualities that a New Yorker like myself can certainly appreciate: budget room rates and location, location, location.
I'll admit I was skeptical when my boyfriend suggested a hotel in La Jolla for our last night in San Diego. But when he told me the room was $128 on a Saturday night, I packed both of our bags and grabbed the bus schedule.
I was even more surprised to find its location was comparable to a room overlooking Central Park (and you won't find a room there for under $400). La Jolla Cove Suites is directly across the street from the infamous cove it is named for. A five-step walk from your room gives you a front-row view of the beach, the cove, the mountains, and one of the most therapeudic sunsets I've ever witnessed. The free continental breakfast is served on the rooftop (which makes it easier to digest the stale bagels, although coming from bagel-land I suppose I am a tough critic).
Other positives are the lit, heated pool that stays open until nine p.m. and the friendly front-desk staff.
Keep in mind, however, that the old saying rings true: you get what you pay for. If you're looking for spa amenities, a concierge and top-notch dining, this may not be the place for you. Our room was small--about a third of the size of my 300-sq-foot studio-- and the woman at check-in couldn't tell me how much a cab to the airport costs).
Luckily, I was in no rush to leave.

Perfect location - right on the beach in La Jolla, steps from the Village. Incredibly convenient for family, because you can rent suites that have full kitchens. If you are going to a wedding at the more expensive La Valencia Hotel next door, it's a more budget-conscious alternative. $15 a night to park. Pool seemed nice.
However - budget is budget. The rooms look like they haven't been renovated since the 70s. The set up of many of the rooms is odd (e.g., doors open to block hallways, hard to reach refrigerators). The bedding is very scratchy and thin, and the mattresses are old. No room service, no computer access (the wireless didn't work).
If you want budget and location, go for it. But expect to get what you pay for - don't be surprised.

All four stars for the view alone. My wife and I had our wedding reception on the roof of this place five wonderful years ago. We had a massive bar (duh), some amazing BBQ (yes, at our wedding) and a great live band. Those elements, combined with the breathtaking view, made for a fantastic kick-off for what's turned out to be the best decision I've ever made.
At the time, the event staff was headed by a real kook (she's subsequently left), and my understanding is that they've restaffed that office with some folks who know a little more about taking care of business.

When they say double-occupancy, even a newborn counts as an additional person...well no wonder...I'm assuming these are all efficiency units with kitchens...Since we were in situations with a lot of guests coming to visit, we were in 1 bedroom suites, a 2-bedroom suite and when we could not get 3 nights in a row in the same suites, the folks were offered the top cove of suites that overlook the water.
Each of our rooms had fantastic views. But if you're hoping to get room service and wireless Internet, don't expect too much. We ended up having delivery from several restaurants.
As for wireless, you have to be on the rooftop deck of the main building to get a connection. Oh, and a decent continental spread on the rooftop deck. But you're locked out when the clock hits 10am.
Very friendly and helpful staff although our night-time greeter had to have the same information repeated to him by myself, the S.0., the parents, 2 of the night security guards and 2 of the night staff - our folks had checked in for us since our flight was so delayed...we just needed help bringing the luggage up.
Having said that...the staff was very accommodating of our requests and needs.

It has been a while since I stayed at the La Jolla Cove Suites, but I was pleasantly surprised by this little hotel. The Suites are in the best location. They are right in front of Prospect park and you have the most perfect view of the La Jolla Cove from the hotel, but this ain't no La Valencia. The rooms due show their age and that wouldn't be such a bad thing if they hotel wasn't so pricey. Also, the Cove doesn't have a room service and what is a hotel without room service???
Luckily, there lots of excellent restaurants just steps away. But the Suites do have a complimentary continental breakfast that is served on the roof top. The food was pretty bland ( I saw a lot of crusty bread and stale bear claws) but the view from the roof top is one of the bests in the La Jolla. In fact, I highly recommend visiting the hotel to check out the roof because it makes for a great venue to host parties or weddings.
The La Jolla Cove Suites may be an eye soar in the Jewell, but it is hard to notice the hotel's broken down structure when looking at the gorgeous view from the roof top.

I urge you to boycott La Jolla Cove Suites, as well as the nearby Shell Beach Guest Apartments. This company is responsible for the biggest and longest lasting historic preservation disaster in San Diego: The "demolition by neglect" of La Jolla's oldest buildings next door, the Red Roost and the Red Rest. Abandoned for decades in hopes they would just go away and be forgotten, these 1894 buildings, on the National Register of Historic Places for ages, have been terribly mistreated. If a suite in the cinder-block building can rent for $600 per night, can you imagine the literally millions of dollar that this spiteful family has lost over the years just to keep the selfish vision of their ancestor alive. I'm shocked that UCSD would patronize them, and I hope anyone thinking of staying here would inform themselves of this situation. San Diego/La Jolla has hundreds of nice places to stay without insulting our history and keeping this illegal situation going since the 1980s. If only the City has the decency to enforce the law on them.
I'm quite fond of La Jolla and drive the hour for day visits quite often, especially during the summer. This review is about my May 2006 trip for Mother''s Day with my then four-year-old daughter. To this day, if you ask her about La Jolla and the whole weekend she remembers it all and she had the time of her life. Considering all we did was go to the beach and hang out at the hotel, I'd say it was a hit.
I have little extra money so this weekend stay was a huge splurge for me. That said, I did utilize one of their specials, which was two nights for $449 (or something like that) and it included tickets to the Birch Aquarium, two canoe or bike tour tickets, the sand pail filled with goodies for my girl, and the continental breakfast that all guests receive. We ended up not using the extra bike tour tickets seeing as how my daughter was too young (and not interested at all), but they subtracted that amount from the package total.
I gave four stars for two reasons: The check-in ordeal I went through and that the pool was not heated. I realize it's warm in Southern California, but in May a pool is definitely not warm enough without heating.
Now, the check-in. Woah boy, I was ready to clobber someone, really. If i wasn't so determined to treat my girl to a wonderful vacation, albeit short, I would've left and driven home. I had called a few times prior to our stay, when I made the reservation and then to follow up due to my not having a credit card and paying in cash. I made sure I had the rules down pat, that I had the exact amount they needed for the room stay plus any possible deposit and was fully prepared to pay it all up front. The downside of refraining from credit cards (for my financial health) but I'm somewhat used to it. When I got there, the woman that was helping me looked at me like I was on crack after I responded to her "credit card?" with my "no, but I have the amount due plus deposit". You'd think i had horns or something. "no ma'am we take credit cards for deposit, and you can pay cash when you leave:.
Aaaaaaaugh!!! I made my extra calls and arrangements ahead of time for this specific reason. So i was ready. Eventually I wore her and her associate down until they called in a manager who then promptly told them I was correct, just take my money, give receipt and let me go. Luckily for them I had no further issues with the stay at all.
Handing over a huge chunk of money for two days worth of stay hurt, but I felt the room was worth it, if not for the view alone. Then there's the park and beach right across the street and the ability to just run up there to eat lunch or take a break from the beach without having to travel too far. Such a treat to just cross the street to the our favorite beach instead of driving around for ten minutes looking for parking.
I loved the decor of the room! Instead of old frumpy florals, ritzy froo froo furniture, our suite had a more modern style and bold colors to it (see photos). The package we purchased was for the One Bedroom Suite which was perfect for my daughter and I since we just shared the Queen bed in the bedroom. It also came with sleeper sofa which we never used but I threatened to kick my girl out onto it if she didn't stop punching me in her sleep. Additionally, there was a fully equipped kitchenette which we used to make cocoa and heat up some meals. Having the fridge and such was nice because i was able to bring some snacks and meals to enjoy in the hotel This helped me save money in order to splurge in the other restaurants in La Jolla.
Our view from the balcony was amazing and just what I was looking for. The view from on top of the hotel where we enjoyed our continental breakfast was astounding. The breakfast itself wasn't bad, much better than some you'd find at Holiday inn, but at the same time, with their room prices you'd think they'd step it up a bit and add custom omelets or something (I say omelets but I don't even eat those...I'm more of a French toast or pancake type). Juice was fresh, bonus!
The suite was clean, shower and bathroom as well, and the air conditioning worked flawlessly. Also, there was a safe in the bedroom closet, something that wasn't expected but I used for an extra sense of safety.
Wifi was kinda spotty. i was able to get it in some areas of my suite but not all. Not a huge issue since I only wanted it to upload pictures as I removed them from my camera card but it would've nice to use it more. The front desk did let me know it was available constantly upstairs where the breakfast was but that was pointless for me since I would only be online after my daughter was asleep.
I WILL stay at La Jolla Cove Suites again, i know it. At least that's what I keep telling myself. My daughter asks about it all the time and I look forward to the day I can afford it again. The little bits of annoyances were not enough to damper our trip nor keep me from wanting to return.

Location Location Location... this place has it. On the water across from the marine reserve in La Jolla you might think you are in for a treat.
WRONG.
After navigating through reception with the googly botox eyed, chestily over-enhanced, ultra excited 55 yr old staff, who after ascertaining that I was on business and maybe a little pleasure (giggle giggle tee-hee tee-hee) and who, after I asked for two keys winked at me and said knowingly: "oooh two keys you know, just in case right?" Yes... two keys... just in case my stupid A** loses one, not so you and I can um... uh.... ascertain why you can't blink effectively...
But of course what I was to find out was this: the room was too small for any kind of fun having (wink wink nudge nudge). I tripped over the bed just trying to get into my room, which overlooked the parking lot and the tiny pool, which also overlooked the parking lot. Then I decided to simultaneously take a shower, urinate in the toilet and brush my teeth, all because the bathroom was so small that it was all right there, with one foot in the shower (that's all that fit!) and the toilet and sink so close , why not multitask? After I realized I had no air conditioning, I settled in to watch some TV, oops my TV was say the size of an ipod, but with less interest. To top it off the room cost $150.
I'd say skip it.

I will start by saying that the reason I give La Jolla Cove Suites 5 stars is because they delivered 5 star customer service. We had our daughter's destination wedding on the roof. This included having over 100 guests stay at the hotel. We could not have been more pleased with the amazing customer service from the sales staff. (Thanks Joy and Tracey!!!!). In addition, the view and accessibility to the cove and Prospect was a huge hit for our guests (something for everybody!) Although not a so-called "5 star resort" all of the rooms were super clean and the grounds were immaculate. (You won't find a view this beautiful anywhere in So Cal. with the ability to accommodate over 200 people!) The suites provided plenty of room for families and the kitchens were a huge help. La Jolla Coves Suites offers an amazing view and awesome accommodations at a tremendous value. We highly recommend La Jolla Cove Suites for any function and can't wait to go back for a vacation. Thanks again for helping make our daughter's wedding a huge success!
I have been coming here for over 6 years. One must understand that the view is the main thing that you are paying for. Sure the interior decorating isn't great. There are plenty of places in the gaslamp district where it is much more congested with better amenities. However, I have always gone during the "value season" and stayed no more than 2 nights. So I may understand if people have paid a huge premium on their stay. I also always got ocean front rooms everytime. I didn't care about the air-conditioning because I left the windows open. Who wouldn't want the ocean breeze? The furniture is ok, they weren't leather or anything, but it definately wasn't dirty or anything of the sort. The staff has always been professional, you could tell the front desk were college students or in that age group up front. The power went out once and theyh got it fixed in literally 15 minutes at 12 o'clock at night. I loved the pool and jacuzzi. The location is near everything you need. I also talked to many couples that were stayed in the rooms next to us and everyone of them loved it as well. I live in Orange County so I just come down here when i want to get away for the weekend. If you want to be near the party where you don't want to drive or get a cab, go into the gas lamp district and pay more. If you want a gorgeous view with the ocean breeze and want to relax you should pick this place.
