Got my hair done today at La Gugu.
This is my 1st time of going there, and I chose Barry to do my hair. He's very friendly and asked what i'm looking for. Seriously I dare not to go for a new, crazy hair style, and I asked him not to do layers on my hair coz i was scared to look like a light bulb (that's my imagination of getting a super-layered hair) . And Barry gave me some suggestions which didnt sound too extreme, and alright, i gave it a shot and listened to him.
And wow, I was surprised how it turned out! My hair has volume, and it looks fresh! (plus i'm happy tht he told me how to volumize my hair daily ! )
I will def. go back to La Gugu next time!
*it only accepts debit card
I know it's scary to try out a new salon, but trust me.
I've been going to La GuGu for about 3-4 years now. At first, I was a little discourage to try out a new place. Once I was in the hands of Barry (Art Director), everything was smooth sailing from that point on.
He's up to date with the lastest style and able to understand what you're looking for. If you don't believe me, give him a try! Won't be disappointed.
I can't speak for the other Stylist, but Barry hasn't disappointed me yet.
I have been to Barry for a long time. I have gone to different places in between, but Barry's always been my go-to guy. Sherry wasn't kidding when she said Barry hooks it up to get you laid if you go there. Girls like my hair style when I get a cut from Barry.
But no one is perfect. I have brought friends to Barry before, and they are mostly girls. He doesn't tend to really listen, so if you go there to get a VERY specific look, you might not get it. He is good at making you look good when you are not really set on something particular. My ex-girlfriend is white and has curly/wavy hair. He straightened it out before cutting it, and it looked great right after, but after she washed it at home, the cut is totally different since the hair curled back up.
On top of that, it is kinda pricey sometimes if you just want to maintain the shape of your haircut, not to do anything big to it. So I usually go to Barry once in a couple of months, and I just get my trims here and there in between.
Overall, it's a nice place to go, and Barry is super nice. He likes to chat.
I've been getting my haircut with Barry here for a few years now. I like how they shampoo and wash your hair first making my hair nice and soft for the haircut. But I don't like it when some of the guys that wash your hair start giving you head/scalp massages. I always felt like they weren't qualified to do that. It hurts too!
Barry usually does a good job cutting my hair and putting in the time and effort. Even if there are customers waiting for him, he doesn't rush to finish with you. The only down side is that they don't keep to your appointment time very well. Me, being punctual, it can be annoying to have to wait. Usually, they charge me $50 for my haircut. Also, be aware that they only accept cash or debit card. Using a credit card will incur additional fees. I agree with Jeannie in that they double charged my debit card as well. The first swipe didn't go through so they swiped it again, but when I checked my bank statement, it went through twice. They were unwilling to refund me and told me to deal with my bank which irritated me. I had to file a bank claim and it took me 2 months to get my $50 back! That is bad customer service!
La Gu Gu Salon is one of my favorites to go to. The girls there are super friendly and they spend a lot of time on your hair.
They are a little pricy ~$50-$60 for a haircut but they take care of what you need!
I came with so many split ends and I came here, she literally sat down and worked on my split ends strand by strand. (luckily i don't have a lot of hair!!)
Every time I leave, I leave with my hair so soft and so voluminous!
Some guys travel from Japan with instructions of, "Barry, make me look good." Barry may be successful if you like high-maintenance styles that require various hair dyes, perms, and products. He kept insisting it despite my preference to avoid damaging my hair and repeating history.
He might be good at cutting hair for men, but not for women unless you want to spend $50 (without tip) for a typical Chinese style of thinning out your hair until it shapes your head like a light bulb. Yes, this is the Chinese definition of layering without volume.
I would rather pay $100 in SF for a quality low-maintenance cut from a Korean stylist that gives my hair a style to frame my face appropriately even though I'm Chinese. It shows the skills of the stylist without a reliance on gimmicks.
There is ample parking and shopping for food nearby in the plaza. The service is fine, but I probably wouldn't come back here since I've had better cuts. Plus, Barry isn't very social unless you initiate the conversation and carry it.
Without this place I would not get laid....
well that's a bit extreme, but they definitely give you a do that turns heads.
Barry with his magnificent Edward Scissorhands style - a dry cut with hair flying everywhere and there is this other guy that stands there and watches Barry work, which is a bit creepy, but he makes up for it when he washes your hair and gives you one of the best scalp massages I have had outside of Asia.
I didn't even have to direct Barry he did what he does and gave me the uber sexy hair that I have always wanted. They may come at you with offers of perms and extensions, if that is your thing then go for it. They will give you that funkay asian style that you strive for. As for me, I keep it simple and get compliments on my hair often.
I also like Berry's design, he's very patiently listening to and discuss with me about the style that I am looking for, so I want to give 3.5 start (not sure how to, somebody tells me? Thanks)
10/10/08 - Lowering my rating for La GuGu since my visit 2 weeks ago led to a haircut that didn't reflect the picture I showed the hairdresser Barry and they doublecharged me. The thing that irked me about the latter is that they are well-aware of the problem and warned me about it. So, if they know about it,why not fix it. Instead, they've inconvenienced me - the customer - to make multiple calls to my bank to file a claim. Ugh! Bad customer service!

Finally, a good Asian hair dresser who knows how to handle my limpy, thin Asian hair! Yes!!!!!… Read more »
I love Barry! He has always done an awesome job and another friend was the one who actually referred me to him and sees him regularily.
Barry is great. He's also very honest with what works and what will not. I never have to worry. I just leave it up to him and he cuts it dry and my hair looks great everytime I walk out of the salon.
He doesn't do anything to damage your hair.
I love the scalp massages when they wash your hair and that they don't push on products. I like the pricing, parking and setting up an appointment is quick and easy.
I brought my little sister-in-law and he did an awesome job with her too. She was very impressed!
I totally don't agree with the previous comment. I usually go to Amy, the woman who charges less for pretty much the same quality (stopped going to her b/c she was getting a little careless). Thought that MAYBE since Barry charged more that he would actually be better. I brought my sister here to cut and curl her hair and Barry COMPLETELY screwed it up. Not only that he was the so called "ART DIRECTOR". He made the initial mistake of putting smaller curls in the wrong place on the bangs and the mistakes got worse. He ended up trying to cover it up by blow-drying it out. Clearly DOESN'T deserve the $155 he charged. Not a professional stylist that I had in mind. We left down $155 for completely screwed up curls that completely were in the wrong place and also a cut that totally didn't go with the style of the curls. To top that all off we now have to curl it at home to rectify the issue. Wouldn't recommend going here at all. Rather Focus Beauty Center in Fremont...which has really impressed me overall.
