This place is awesomepants!

Try the sandwiches or the crepes.  Totally dope.  Desserts are chill, and the drinks are good.  Got an oldschool atmosphere, everythings the same as when it opened in the seventies, even the bartender.

Try it out.

Oh La Frite, you were my only option when I needed nourishment before heading to a movie at the ArcLight.  We were short on time and needed to sit down and eat immediately.  I am not really a fan of any of the places in the Sherman Oaks Galleria, so we basically stopped at the first, closest place we saw, La Frite.

I am going to go ahead and guess that this place was IT in the 80s, too bad that decade is dead and buried.  Now it's almost 2010 and nothing in here seems to have changed.  Apparently that's charming.  I dunno.  Maybe I am missing something.  I had their chopped salad and Onion Soup.  As far as Onion soup went, it was pretty alright, but if you put enough cheese on anything it's going to be decent.  Their salad was, uh, green?  I dunno, I have had salads where I knew I'd have to go back.  Here I just knew I had to eat it so I would not gom on disgusting popcorn at the movies.

My boyfriend had Angel Hair Pasta with Spicy Sausage.  It was ok, nothing to write home about though.  Maybe we should have gone with a special, but neither of us had the time to sit around for something like that.  I'm guessing this is generally a 3 star restaurant that caters to older locals that refuse to move out of their own comfort zone.  Once all the baby boomers die, so will this place.

An absolute perfect place for a date! Totally cute with all the little lights. Be sure to get a patio table because it gets a little loud inside.

The place is to resemble a French cafe. I'm not too sure why the place is called "the fry" but that's beyond me. Having considering that, the portions are what you might find customary in European cuisine. This ain't no Claim Jumper portions here people. It's just the right amount. However you might feel a little gypped over getting the coke. For $2.75 they bring a tiny 8oz bottle.

The food is wonderful though. Serves fresh baked bread with butter in the beginning. I had the Chicken Cordon Bleu, while my friend had to Shrimp and Lobster Ravioli; both of which were really tasty. The chicken is less on the batter than most typical ones you'd find like Mimi's. But the chicken was very tender and the cheese was very gooey which makes everything happy! And make sure you get the "Pommes Frites" as those are really good as well.

Service was good but we could have been paid a little more attention. The server came just enough times to keep everything in order but couldn't get her when I needed to flag her down. I guess it's because we were at the corner table outside where there wasn't as many people as inside. All good though.

Definitely check out. And bring a date!

i'm surprised la frite doesn't have a better rating.  i love this restaurant and i've been coming here for years.  i love the ambiance, i feel like i'm in europe or in a tiny cafe in some cool new york neighborhood.  the food is so delicious, there's always a good crowd in here (good people watching, too), and it's a great location on the boulevard.  they have a ton of stuff on their menu - everything from salads (their house dressing is really good), to burgers (with yummy pomme frites!), to fish (halibut=awesome) to crepes (need i say more?).  don't be upset if your server isn't the sweetest or most attentive, but i think that's what adds to the charm of this place.  the servers don't need to kiss your butt because everything else makes up for it.

go enjoy la frite if you're looking for a european laid back experience or if you like crepes - who doesn't like crepes??

Once upon a time , I thought that La Frite was a "fancy" place. This was mostly when I was little, growing up near Woodland Hills, and my friend's parents would get dressed up and go to that other La Frite on their date night. Then I'd go home and my parents would be microwaving dinner whie wearing wrangler jeans and In-And-Out Burger shirts.

Enough reminiscing.

My boyfriend and I are looking for a great place to eat. We're going all over the valley looking for a place with a decent dining room that isn't too noisy, good quality food, and $$ prices. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it has to be better than the places we've been going.

The highlights of our trip to La Frite include catching a mosquito hawk on our table under a ketchup bottle.

Then, there was the incident with my BF ordering me a souffle for dessert 10 minutes after we sat down, only to have the server forget to put the order in, and bring me a sundae instead, without saying a word. He either really thought I wanted a sundae or ...? When we told him "souffle" not "sundae" he said he'd have them whip one up really fast. I specifically said if it's going to take awhile, a slice of chocolate cake would be just fine. Server replied "I'll have him do it the fast way."

What he brought out to the table reminded me in texture and appearance of a mushroom. Nothing about it was appetizing, it was simultaneously chewy, spongy and gelatinous. To add disgust to, well, disgusting, the chocolate sauce they served with the souffle was Hershey's Syrup. Like, $1.99 at the supermarket, runny, brown plastic squeeze bottle Hershey's Syrup.

The rest of the food, well, wasn't memorable. I had some fish, which had a few bones in it, and some veggies and some mashed potatoes. I remember thinking it was odd to see Shrimp Satay on the menu at a place that is supposed to be French.

While we were there, our waiter had two large parties and another small table. It was clearly too much for him, as I mentioned above. I can't help but wonder why, when I called ahead for a reservation, they didn't ask me to come a little later. Basically half the place cleared out around the time my Hershey's mushroom souffle showed up.

Now I understand why my parents never went out to eat- I could have made myself a sundae at home with Hershey's syrup and avoided the bugs!

This is a somewhat upscale french restaurant that that does not work too had at being French.

French Fry review:

They serve very thin and fresh shoestring fries with a small amount of skin.  The fries needed a considerable amount of salt.  Overall pretty good but $4.25 for a very small portion.

The soups were awesome. After that not so much.

the arctic char didn't seem all that fresh and i did not dig the sauce (or gravy?) on top of it. the duck was better. everything was ok, but the food was not the type of quality it should have been given the price of the bill.

We had an amazing Easter brunch at La Frite. For only $22 we had all you can drink mimosas, a starter (soup, cheese & fruit plate, or melon with port wine), freshly baked croissants (plain, chocolate or almond) & an entree ( we all had the eggs benedict).  I recommend sitting outside, you get to enjoy the nice sunny weather.

The escargots have a wonderful garlic-buttery-goodness to them, the open-face burgers are super savory, and the fries are lick-your-fingers yummy.  Also, you've gotta love a place that doesn't rush you one little bit during a two-hour lunch nor raise an eyebrow when you order several extremely fruity midday cocktails.  La Frite is consistently good and, overall, a real gem an independent neighborhood eaterie.

I usually don't go to the Valley to eat, but met up with some friends who live in the area and they suggested La Frite as the venue.  I probably would have drove right by without the GPS as it's just a small little place amongst the endless store fronts on Ventura Blvd.

So we ordered  up some apps, salads and entrees and everything was okay, but nothing made my taste buds want to say "Ooh la la".  Everything actually tasted a little over-seasoned IMO...just a bit too garlicky and saltier than it needed to be.  Their menu is mostly French as you would assume, but they've got lots of other things as well and daily specials too.

The restaurant itself is cozy, but the lighting was a bit dingy.  The decor seemed a bit dated as well, but it works if you like the whole old neighborhood joint kind of theme.  As for service, it was on par for LA. Our server would come around once in awhile, but there were times where we were left looking around for someone.  I've had better, but I've had worse as well.

So La Frite is a decent place to get some eats if you live in the area, but I'll definitely be sticking to the French places on my side of the hill.

Uh oh...Is La Frite trying survive this recession by going cheap on the quality of my favorite dish?...rack of lamb

The meat was definitely not good quality as it was quite chewy.  I was very disappointed since I am a regular here.

I am downgrading La Frite to 3 stars until they improve the quality of lamb they serve.

Tried the following at this restaurant:

Veggie Quiche (Flavorful & Tasty!)
Grilled Salmon (Well cooked and topped off with a tasty creamy sauce)
Burgers (Get it cooked medium or medium well. Otherwise, it'll be too rare and the meat will be hard to chew.  Also, recommend getting the broiled potatoes as a side.)

Overall the food is pretty tasty and the portion is hearty.

Service: Lackluster and unattentive. Order take-out and enjoy your meal at home instead.

Well if you want to leave a restaurant without feeling like someone has to roll you out maybe this place is not for you.

All I can say is yum, yum, and yum.  Probably not the place you want to go if you are on a diet, the place itself is candle lit and cozy like a little bistro in Paris, but the portions are lets say very "American".

Went there yesterday with my boyfriend and his parents. Thank God, I was not paying.

When my boyfriend's parents said we would be eating at a French restaurant, all I could think of was arrogant waiters, tense environment, and high prices. Actually, only of those three were right. Don't be perturbed if you see it from the outside as it looks old and dirty. If you actually settle yourself inside, it quickly develops a very comforting "no-frills"  vintage feel that allows you to relax and enjoy your food at peace.

Not feeling very hungry and not wanting his parents to spend too much I ordered the Pesto Mushroom Ravioli appetizer which at $8.50 was one of the cheapest meals on the menu. It was decorated with fresh basil and tomatos which made it smell, look, and taste absolutely delicious! And as for La Frite's namesake, I could not help but steal my boyfriend's fries from his plate! They were cut shoestring style and fried to a golden brown, crispy perfection. I also enjoyed their complementary hot bread basket, and before I even tasted it I knew it was going to be good. Not by the smell, not by the look, but by the sound of the crust. Mmmm..

Would I go back? Oh, most definitely! But only if someone else pays again! ;)

My experience with La Frite is generally pleasant. I like independent feel of this small restaurant: it's like a cheerful little reminder that small business owners aren't a dying breed, and definitely a breath of fresh air next to the conglomerate hell of the Galleria down the street.

They carry a decent selection of wines, and the wine of the month we tried was cheap and not repulsive, so we bought the whole bottle. Something like Fat Cat or Cat's Ass or something.

Like the delicate flower I am, I decided to delve straight into the spicy sausages, which were amazing, and my boyfriend opted for a seafood-noodle dish, which was also pleasant. I wouldn't die over it, but in general it was palatable, and I would definitely gorge myself on their delightfully spicy seasoned, heartburn-inducing sausages again. I wasn't able to finish my plate, but since we were off to another activity and not able to carry the rest out, I sadly left my sausages as they lay after I mangled them.

The lighting is very low, and sets the type of almost-romantic cheesy dining mood that I go for. I was extremely claustrophobic, however. There were pie racks in the middle of the dining room, which is basically on top of the kitchen, and tables floating around randomly without structure, which makes me uneasy. But that's because I'm awkward and strange, not necessarily the fault of La Frite. Our server was a happy young woman who appeared stoned for most of the night, but she did a good job so I commend her on her ability to multitask, if that's the case. She also continued cyphening wine down my throat, so kudos for that as well.

Overall, ok. We'll probably be back, but I don't plan to frequent.

Oh La Frite, how do I love thee?  Lemme count the ways....

I have very fond memories while dining at La Frite.  My grandparents and I would go on dinner dates all the time:

My grandmother would get drunk off a glass of Chianti while my grandfather ordered a Stoli with only 3 rocks and 3 olives.  Since my grandpa passed, now it's just me and granny...

Both me and granny always order different entrees when we come and everything is DELICIOUS.  Hands down the best salmon EVER.

It can get a little crowded at times because it's such a teeney restaurant, but it's totally worth it.  Great for small birthday parties, parties of one or a romantic date.  Even the Valet guy is NICE- he always remembers my grandma and asks about her day!

Compared to a few years ago, the service can be hit or miss.  But the quaintness, fond memories and HIGH quality food all than make up for this loophole.

This is my favorite 2 Star French Restaurant!
Let's be real, it's not a cozy, swank place...if you drive here from anywhere outside the valley, you're not gonna be able to wonder if you should have opted for somewhere else.  The food is not really creative, the wine selection is anemic, and the prices suggest a level of pride I don't seem to appreciate. But!  I can WALK here and that makes all the difference.

It's a great place to wander into when I'm not in the mood for driving and it's one of the few non-franchise places close enough to do just that.  I've compelled friends to meet me here many times (always with a sigh from them), but they seem to make do perfectly fine.  The key is to NOT come here for the food...bring company.

One more word of caution...try to sit outside.  I never dine in doors here because if it's fish night, you'll definately know!  There is one exception to all of this though...I do enjoy the Baked Brie.  It's a good place to lounge on a weekend afternoon with Brie, a little fruit and a bottle of wine.

Mmm i love this place. It's right down the street from my dad's so i can walk there to burn off the calories that i'm about to put back on when i get there.
The food can be pricey, depending on what you get, but it's french and delicious so it's expected. I'm okay with it.
I love the look and feel of this place. It's so cozy. i feel like i'm eating in an old cottage in France or something. And the service is great.
Practically everything on the menu is delicious. The creme brulee and crepes are to die for. They are a must.

TERRIBLE.  I can't believe someone else ate here on the same day I did (1/26/08) and had such a drastically different experience.  "The best service"?  HA!  The service I had was ATROCIOUS.

Example: I ordered the brunch, which includes a croissant and orange juice.  The waitress never brought my croissant; I had to ask the hostess for it.  And more than halfway through the meal, I finally asked the waitress for my orange juice.  Here's what happened.

WAITRESS:  Oh, you want orange juice?
ME:  It comes with the brunch, right?
WAITRESS:  Yeah... I just didn't know you wanted it.

What?  You have to specifically ask for every item that's supposed to come with your order?  Ridiculous!

I would Yelp about this place based on the piss-poor service alone, but the food is also terrible.  I don't understand why all these reviewers loved it so much.  Is it that living in LA has lowered their standards so much that a lame, soggy ham sandwich can pass for a croque monsieur?

You know a place is great when the only thing I could find remotely wrong  was the paper doily lining the plate under my scrumptious and quivering souffle was upside down!

Go there.  Go now.  Go often!

The restaurant, which has been there some 35 years, is as comfortable as your favorite slippers but luckily is considerably more appetizing.  The crowd on this particular Saturday at around 8 was a nice mix of Sherman Oaks regulars, a few hipsters, a well-behaved youngster here and there and a smattering of Hollywood types.

We were greeted by the host manager who, aside from being very accommodating to our request for a table a bit further from the door, was just pretty darn easy on the eyes.  He worked the room and the door with equal aplomb.

Nikkie, our server, what a find!  Funny, outgoing, great sales technique (she talked the two-top next to us in to having THREE desserts) and genuinely wiling to share the gems and bombs on the menu.

And it is quite a menu.  It's nice to see a menu with a range of selections in a variety of sizes and prices.  You could, for example, have a fabulous dinner with a salad, omelet, and a glass of house wine and slide out for under $20.  Nice to see in a town of $20 apps.

We passed up apps, drawn by the lure of the towering souffles we had observed flowing from the kitchen.  I opted for the Mussels Marieniere poached in a light wine and cream broth with onions.  They are quite possibly the best mussels I've ever eaten.  I devoured bite after succulent bite, savoring the fresh, slightly earthy essence.  One could also make the case that the entree was just an excuse to have a go at the incredible pommes frites.  About the diameter of a chopstick and perfectly crispy and yes, straight from the fryer to my mouth.  Add in a side of tart mayonnaise and the experience left me picking the last crumbs from the dish.

My partner Alex was sold on the Halibut served grilled and topped with a mound of sauteed fennel.  Crispy snap peas and silky mashed potatoes rounded off the excellent special of the night.  He too had a tough time pushing away in order to save room for dessert.

Ah dessert!  Despite Nikkie's cheerful hard sell of the fruit tart (which looked amazing at the next table by the way) we were laser focused in our quest for a chocolate souffle and crepes Suzette.   As is typical souffles take 20 minutes which gave us a few minutes to strike up a conversation with the couple next door celebrating their anniversary.  And to enjoy the last of a respectable Mouton Cadet.  The wine list isn't going to thrill a budding oenophile, however the prices are very reasonable and there are enough interesting selections to satisfy everyone at the table.

By the way, the deserts?  Divine!  The souffle was perfectly baked into an airy tower of mouth pleasing fluffiness, the chocolate syrup (which should have been warmed) drizzled through the center ratcheted the richness up to the next level and with the addition of freshly whipped cream on the side?  I can't believe I ate the whole thing.  I got exactly one taste of Alex's crepes Suzette and can vouch that they were delicious with a classic balance of sweet, sour and astringency from the sauteed citrus peel.  Light, slightly springy crepes carried the sauce admirably and the combination left him sated and ready for next time.

Have fun!  Tell Nikkie hi and be sure to order a French Martini.

This place is *not* expensive. It's about average price for great french faire.

I really enjoy the food here, everything is prepared very well and tastes very fresh. Their bread is really delicious, especially when you make little sandwiches with the duck pate. The salads are gigantic and the dressings are spot on. I've eaten here several times now and have been happy each time. I've tried the steak w/ frites, beef bourguignon , sampled the osso bucco and also had a la frite burger. All delicious.

Service at dinner is pretty goodt despite some of the other reviews here.

I've only been here a few times and always get the same style food.  Crepes..  They're good, a bit on the smaller side which may be okay for the ladies, but I find I need more when I leave.  Good, but pricey Martini's.  Heck, the whole joint is pricey.  Service has always be So-So, but in fairness, it's always been busy.  I say that since I dunno how to weigh that with this place.

It's a little french bistro.  What else can I say..   They have lot parking, but it's Valet only.  Personally, Valet doesn't touch my car so I park on ventura and walk.  That is on the rare occasion I do come here.

I tried this place with some friends because it was rated fairly high in some local dining guides. From the outside there is not a lot to distinguish this place as a great restaurant and once you step inside you are still not sure if you've made the right decision or not. The decor looks like it must have been a very charming and almost elegant place back in the 70's or 80's. Even the menu selections seem like they came from a French bistro of the same era (i.e. trout almandine, chicken Cordon Bleu, etc.). The staff were very friendly and helpful when we ordered which was encouraging. However, even when the food arrived I still wasn't sure how it was going to taste. Luckily this is when we started becoming impressed rather quickly. Starting with the baked brie and the mushroom ravioli that were instantly devoured by the group and getting better from there.

For an entree I had ordered the chicken crepe expecting it to be like the savory crepe's I've had at the stand at the L.A. Farmer's Market and at a famous crepe place in SFO and even like the ones I've had at crepe stands in Paris which are thin and wrapped up into a pocket like shape. However this dish came out in a very hot oval baking dish that was still bubbling. The crepe itself was just ok but the chicken and cheese and sauce were absolutely incredible. Huge chunks of white breast meat were constantly fished out of this lake of delicious melted goo. It was one of the tastiest things I had ever put in my mouth. All my friends confirmed that their entrees were also great. In fairness, I went back to this restaurant a couple weeks later and the chicken crepe dish was still great but not quite as spectacular as the first time.

Like some others have commented, the service was slow at times and yet they always seemed to make up for it with friendliness and cheerfulness. This restaurant also attracts a very eclectic clientele and they filled up quite quickly both times so I recommend a reservation during prime hours. The space is crowded and when we looked around we were surprised to find a mix of young couples, elderly folks dressed in suits, families, business people and even a few young hipsters sprinkled in. I guess it makes sense for a "neighborhood" restaurant in Sherman Oaks.

After driving around for a bit to find some fish for my friend The Fred-man's appetite, we decided to  eat here. Walking it the ambiance reminded me of France being that it was a French restaurant. The mood was perfect and quaint, the  waitress was overwhelmed but courteous when see served us.

I ordered the liver with bacon and grilled onions, a side of mash potatoes, carrots and zucchini came with my meal. As an appetizer we ordered the french fries which were delicious! Once my meal arrived I was in heaven, every item on my plate was superb. (That's saying much since I only like my carrots raw). I grew up liking liver (an acquired taste I know) and this was wonderful. I shall return!

There are two types of people in this world, those who hate liver and onions and those who order it if they happen to be at a place that has it on it's menu.

If you are the latter, go to La Frite.  They have a killer plate of it with tons of onions and BACON. mmmmm bacon.

Everything at La Frite is tasty, the staff is friendly but the place is small, so it looses a star for being cramped and being stuck in the 70's on decor.

La Frite is cute, but I am disappointed by the ratio of deliciousness to dollars, at least as part of the lunchtime crowd.  For lunch I opt instead for La Pergola next door.

Still, French is a nice change of pace.

Really?!? La Frite translates into "the chip" in English, and clearly I must have a chip on my shoulder. I expected it to be so much better than it actually was. Bland-o-rino food and completely  dated interior that lacked any sense of vintage nostalgia or charm.

La Frite is a constant on my list of favorite restaurants in the valley. The tarragon dressing on the Du Cafe salad is something I have been addicted to for years. Their bread is always warm and good. Everyone I've taken there has loved their food. There is something on the menu for everyone's taste and appetite. Not great wine by the glass, but you usually can't have everything. I love the creme brulee too.

I have been eating at this restaurant since I was in the womb.  Before my parents had a refrigerator in the 70s, they ate at La Frite, then called "Yellowfingers," almost nightly.  Perhaps that is why I have insatiable cravings for their chicken crepe casseroles--beautifully folded and baked into a delectable white wine cream sauce--and their chopped steaks--perfectly seasoned, high quality ground sirloin (it really tastes like "chopped steak!) topped generously with melted swiss cheese and your choice of gourmet condiments (bacon? spinach? sauteed mushrooms? poached egg? the list goes on!).  AND, not to forget their traditionally executed French salads--always fresh, always tossed in a lovely wooden bowl, the perfect ration of the best tarragon vinaigrette you've tasted this side of Paris.

I can safely say that La Frite never fails me--the food and service are always consistent, and you know you are in for a delicious, relaxing, and more importantly, unprententious, time.  It's a true vestige of the classy and chic vibe that Sherman Oaks used to have before it became filled with mini-Gallerias.

Order a side of the tarragon vinaigrette for your matchstick frites, you will not be sorry!  And, the chocolate souffle is a perfect way to end a meal--but you need to order it well in advance of finishing your meal.

Le Frite is not bad and not great, it's just OK. It does feel very French inside and the service was fast and friendly. I'd try it again. I heard the Crogue Monsieur is great and haven't had the crepes yet. Try the spicy lentil carrot soup!

The place has a nice decor, but as another yelper so eloquently put "the ratio of deliciousness to dollars" is not close to being there.  Stopped by mostly because it was the first good-looking restaurant we saw on our way back from an event at the Skirball. We ordered escargot, Chinese chicken salad, and a strawberry/banana crepe. Sounds weird for two people, I know, but hey - my wife just wanted a crepe.
The following would be my ratings of each Escargot 3.0, Salad 3.5, Crepe 2.5. The crepe, unfortunately, was simple cooked strawberries and bananas in a crepe wrap. Honestly, where is the love? Heck, even I could have done that! Now, I have to admit, we weren't looking to spend a lot and had we been, there would have been a lot more choices. Nevertheless, what's up with $12 for a cheeseburger?
The server, by the way, was sarcastic and not that attentive, but this is a French restaurant, after all.
Useful information - no beer on tap, no discovercard.

My first review on Yelp and like another reviewer of this restaurant, the experience was so bad, I had to create an account and post immediately.

My girlfriend and I chose La Frite as a spontaneous choice for dinner.  Over the years, we've driven past it so many times.  Tonight, the sign and outside decor were very charming and drew us in.

Well, the charm quickly ended as soon as we sat down.  Our server took 15 minutes just to greet us with "hello, what would you like to drink".  She was a young lady who kept speaking to a minimum.  She was more of an order taker and not a waitress.  Brought the wrong soup and she tried to tell me that I was wrong.

The French Onion Soup and Ratatouille were the 2 best things we had.  Our main courses were the Croque Monsieur (ham and cheese sandwich) and Quiche Loraine.  They both fell flat.  The ham on my sandwich was sad and old, with no taste.  My 5 year old niece made a better quiche.  The fries were so plain and tasteless.  My exact words "In & Out has better fries".

I ordered the souffle at the same time I ordered dinner (because we all know it takes 20 minutes to make).  It came out 20 minutes AFTER we finished our dinner.  IT WAS DISGUSTING.  Think wet toilet paper with chocolate.  Obviously, didn't eat more than the first bite.

We spent over an hour and a half of our Sunday night at this restaurant and spent $60.  Will never go back, the restaurant is very ARROGANT.  Unfortunately, La Frite promotes that very French reputation...

Definitely above par food for the luxurious SF valley.  Veggie Calzone incredible. My first calzone ever and it was amazing.  Not sure what style of cuisine La Frite achieves to be, but most everything is fantastic.  Dessert should not be passed up.
