This place is great. In a time when Mexican food is not often considered synonymous with "healthy"  Flor de Loto comes to the rescue and returns Mexican food to its original healthy roots. The staff is very friendly and the place is cozy. I usually go there for breakfast once in a while, I get the "Chorizo" with black beans and rice..the red salsa is good..kicked down with wheat tortillas and a jamaica drink..we are good to go!

Flor de Loto is definitely a gem to the community. I wish I had one here in Venice where I live.

When I heard about a Mexican vegetarian restaurant in Huntington Park , I just couldn't believe it. There are very few vege options in this area, so I had to go. The restaurant itself is not very impressive, but the menu is pretty big. My biggest problem with the food is that most of it has cheese, cream or eggs, which means that there are very few vegan options. Still, being able to eat something that is both Mexican and vegan is pretty crazy. My family is from Jalisco, so many of the items on the menu are not familiar to me. I've been here several times with my family because it's so close to South Central, but the food isn't really isn't that great. It's just okay. I've had the Mole, Enchipotladas, Chile Relleno con Verduras, and the Clayuda con Soyrizo (minus the cheese). The Enchipotladas were decent, but the rice was super dry and the beans lacked flavor. Mexicans should know how to make good beans! The Chile Relleno was good, but without cheese, which I can't eat anyhow, it just wasn't the same.  The Clayuda was huge, but weird. It's almost like a quesadilla, but comes in a thin, hard, flat bread that is not a flour tortilla. Again, this normally comes with cheese and cream, but I got it without these and it was just okay. It consisted mostly of chopped iceberg lettuce, soyrizo, and dry rice.
I've come for the buffet on Sundays, but since everything has eggs and cheese and cream on it I had to limit myself to about  three items, which defeats the purpose of a buffet.
The pineapple and parsley drink is amazing! It's super refreshing and is offered as part of the buffet. All of their fresh juices and aguas are good.
If you are vegetarian and looking for something that's not Thai, I say go here. My mom, who is not vege, likes the food. If you're vegan and want to try some good Soy Chicken Mole, try this place, but don't mix your mole into the rice 'cause you will have wasted all that good sauce!
I really wish the food here was better because I can't always ask my mom to cook vegan for me! If my mom can make good vegan food, then a restaurant should be able to! The dishes here are all very "home-made" like, but lack the outstanding flavors of my mother's cooking. Seriously, Mexican food should never be bland.

Let me start by saying ALL YOU CAN EAT MEXICAN VEGETARIAN BRUNCH $9

My friends and I had a wonderful brunch at an absolute gem of a place called La Flor De Loto in Huntington Park.  Bring a newspaper and prepare to relax because you will have a lot of eating to do.

I had been here once before and had struck up a conversation with the co owner Martha Villanueava.  I recognized her as soon as we walked in the door.  She owns a drapery business in Highland Park as well and she told me that between the two endeavors she rarely sleeps.  You would have never guessed it with the brunch lay out. When I explained to her that I was writing a review for my webpage on yelp (she didn't know what yelp was) she asked how she could help.  She lifted all the lids on all the entrees for me so that I could get a nice shot of each, Then she took off back to the affairs of the kitchen and left me and my party to eat.
I began with the brocolli, it was covered in melted cheese and had an herbal, slightly sweet flavor.  The brocolli was a little al dente but the florrettes were fine, hey it's all you can eat, ditch the stalks. I also sampled the chile relleno, a very untraditional version, where the egg forms a tortilla stuffed with the chile and beans, its on this plate with taquitos, a rice similar to bulgar wheat, black beans, chayote squash layered with riccotta cheese, and a fabulous lasagna,http://i191.photobucke... on this next plate is more stuff from the last plate just neater but with a wonderful spicy "chicken" curry dish http://i191.photobucke.... To wash it down there is an assortment of four drinks to choose from.  One was the standard Horchata, next a very sweet and delicious Jamaica, then there was a tart mixture of cranberry and pomegranite juice, and finally a pineapple juice drink with parsley (perhaps a new scoops flavor for Tai). Once I was totally relleno myself it was time for dessert. FLAN http://i191.photobucke... totally delicious FLAN. Also a bread pudding type cake.  The top was dry but the bottom was that yummy moist bread pudding consistency and then there are these funny cookies that look heavy but weigh next to nothing.  I believe they had coconut in them.  There was a fantastic looking Tirimisu taunting us from the counter, but alas that wasn't part of the brunch either.

Be prepared for loud dance type music playing which doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but if you are into moving your bod, you might enjoy it.  Bring a couple of bucks because both times I was there, a man came out and played guitar and sang a soulful mexican ballad or two and he does come around to collect.  He is tasteful and doesn't stay too long, perhaps one or two songs and then he is gone. Check out the pics below to get a feel for the place and to see your's truly doing his best Huell Howser with the lovely Martha V, overseer along with Constantino of this fine establishment.

Treat Yourself, Go To La Flor De Loto.

One of the very few veggie options in the area. That alone deserves a big thumbs up. The restaurant specializes in dishes from Oaxaca, Mexico. The owners are very friendly and will answer any questions about the menu. They have a daily special which is roughly $6.50 that includes an entree (3  or 4 choices daily), rice and beans, salad, an agua drink (horchata, jamaica, tamarindo, pina con perejil), and a dessert. Plus they have sunday buffets! Highlights for me are Enchipotladas, Enchiladas Suizas, the Mushroom Ceviche, the Clayuda and the Potato stuffed with Picadillo.

So far, so good.  I had the fish, and really liked it.  The "ceviche" is really good, as are the beans.  This is a real nice place, and feel lucky to have it in the area.  It's probably the only Mexican vege restaurant in America that does this style of cuisine.

I suppose I should try the brunch, because I was not too thrilled with my meal (nor was my mom).  I work in Boyle Heights, so I figured I'd venture out to HP for some vegetarian Mexican.  I ordered the crepes with cheese, fried plantains and a pineapple/cucumber juice.  I really enjoyed the juice; very refreshing.  But, unfortunately, I found the meal to be quite bland.  The black beans were good - a tiny bit salty, but good.  The crepes had this red sauce that was barely noticeable and I didn't care too much for the "quesillon" they use.  The plantains were okay - nothing like Bossa Nova.  I'm a huge fan of plantains, but I really didn't care for the cream that they come with - a bit too sweet.  So, considering I live about 35 miles away from LA, I doubt I'll ever make it to their brunch.  The juice was great, but the meal left me wanting more.  On a good note, the staff was great and very amicable!
