La Costa hit la spot!
It was cold and rainy outside and the la costa waiter brought me warm chips and salsa and bean dip to heat me up. Yummy. I ordered the vegi enchiladas, but I got so much more! It came with white rice and veggies and a heaping cup of beans. This place does NOT skimp on portion sizes. The enchiladas were slightly greasy for my taste, but had firm vegetables (green pepper, red pepper, onions, celery), which I consider a must. They were excellent--some kind of cheese gravy topping added a lot of flavor. The food wasn't especially spicy, so it seems like a lot of people would enjoy. Can't wait to repeat!
It took us a while to find a really good mexican restaurant in the area. Coming from So Calif we were a little spoiled, but when we found La Costa we were happy. The food is fantastic, so much flavor.
We like to go on a friday to listen to the Mariachis.
La Costa is a great place to go get a cold beer and a ton of food. This isn't my favorite Mexican joint but it is worth a try. I wouldn't be surprised if it became your favorite.
I haven't stepped foot in La Costa since high school. What I remembered most about this establishment was you are given refried beans with your chips and salsa. I haven't been to another restaurant that does that.
Cut to six years later and I'm at La Costa with two of my co-workers for Friday night drinks and dinner. As soon as I walk in it al comes back to me: the pink walls and the paintings of parrots holding beer bottles. This place hasn't changed but its a good thing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
One thing I did forget was how extensive the menu was. There is your usual Mexican fare but there are a variety of ways you can get it meaning you have to decide between plenty of meat options. There is even tongue offered which I rarely find. Amongst all the meat, there is a small vegetarian menu. I went with the vegetarian chimicaga. My co-workers are regulars here and got the enchiladas and a small margarita which was huge.
Our food arrives and my dinner is massive. Just how I like it. Alongside my chimichanga is white rice with carrots, peas, and lima beans mixed in, and whole beans. I cut through the chimichanga and it is pipping hot. Vegetables come tumbling out and I can't wait to try a bit. After a cool down I take a forkful and yummy! This is like a vegetable stuffed burrito deep fried to perfection. The veggie rice compliments the whole beans well.
A nice compliment to our dinner was the mariachi band playing in the attached dinner area.
Even though I did attempt to eat my entire entree, I had to throw in the towel and request a to go box. There was just too much food to devour in one sitting. But that is always a good thing.
Prices? Awesome. Food? Pretty good. Service? HORRENDOUS.
Sadly, I don't go here anymore because of the service alone.

This place is a hidden gem. That's all I'm saying 'cause I don't want everyone to start coming… Read more »
**The best Mexican food to be found in the greater Seattle area, hands down.** This is one of two mexican restaurants I will go to. The other one is in Ballard: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Everything I've had here has been very tasty. The margaritas are huge, and very well made. Please however be aware that this is Cal-Mex. I only make the distinction because I'm from Texas, and really prefer Tex-Mex. (Which you cannot find anywhere in Western Washington.) The differences are usually subtle, but for those in the know, they are very telling. I'm particularly fond of the Chile Colorado, and the Carne Asada.
Other people have complained about the service, and I will say it's very hit or miss. If you know which server to ask for, you'll get what I consider to be the very best service you've ever had anywhere, in all your days. I'd tell you who that is, but this is the one time where I'll be stingy with my knowledge. There have been a couple of occasions that I've been here where my regular server wasn't working, and the service was very slow. It was still good, but *very* slow. The restaurant was not busy enough for the service to be that slow.
The prices are quite reasonable for what you're getting. I've never felt bad about spending money here, and I've never left hungry. The portions are large, and they use quality ingredients.
One last note: If you happen to be from Texas or New Mexico, do not order Sopapillas here expecting to get a light, hollow, fully, fried object of awesome that you only put honey on. This is a mental disconnect I've had with *every* mexican restaurant I've been to in Washington State. From what I can tell, they make wedges of flour tortilla, and deep-fry them. Then they add cinnamon-sugar, honey, chocolate sprinkles and whipped cream. Some places add icecream. This is horrifying to me in general, and I while I suppose that my expectation could be wrong, this has always hurt my feelings. It's like going to buy a Mustang, and getting a Pinto.

Some of the best Mexican food around. The prices are really good for the amount of food you get. The service wasn't bad but the place was pretty dirty.
This place absolutely kicks ass! I got the borrego, and it was excellent; it was much better than Azteca, more food, and around the same price. This place replaced Circo Circo for me; but the food and service is EXCELLENT! Lots of food for the money, and dispite the location's unsafe feeling; this is totally a family enviorment!
This is by far the BEST Mexican food ever! They serve the best chips with beans and salsa and their drinks are powerful; you definitely get what you pay for. You will always have leftovers...even if you think you can eat it all, you won't be able to.
I recommend the pollo fundido...oh god, my mouth is watering thinking about it!
My favorite Mexican Restaurant! Huge, delicious portions. Plan to eat half and take the other half for lunch the next day.
This place is really down-home authentic. Always full. I'm a fan of the Spanish-music jukebox.
I love that you get beans and salsa to dip your chips. I love the buckets of Coronitas. Great, friendly service. Most of the servers have been there for years (as long as I've been going there).
Unless I'm in the mood for a taco wagon, or high-end gourmet Mexican food, this is the ONLY Mexican place I eat at. YUMMMMM!!!
This is the kind of place that when you are about 15 miles into a bike ride you start dreaming about. First you think about the warm chips and the staple salsa and beans. Then you try and decide what off the giant menu will fill you up. The atmosphere is cheerful but they are not covering up bad food with glitz. I would venture on the other end of things. No glitz needed when the food fills you up and tastes good .
The bartenders margarita's of the large size are the way to go. Tasty tasty stuff I tell yah. I like the cold shrimp with cucumbers, tomatoes and jalapeo peppers.
One thing that I LOVE about this place, when your food is done. You get it. No putting one persons food under a heatlamp so you can both dine together. That just washes out the good the cook can do. As someone who cooks I would rather see fresh hot food as orders come in and food goes out. Also the size of the fajitas makes it hard to carry out all the food you get. Well to be honest all the dishes are this way. Just way more then you think you should eat but they serve it to you anyways.
Eat as much as you can and enjoy the leftovers. Be careful ordering your first few times unless you can put away food with the best of them. I have never made it through an entree, let alone apps too.
So I'm in Ellensburg having dinner with my parents at some random Mexican restaurant when I start talking to the waiter at length. After hearing that we lived in Burien, he asked, "So you go to La Costa?"
I'd honestly never heard of the place. After coming back home, I looked it up and went there for dinner.
I don't know how I never knew about this place before! When you hear of a Mexican joint in a run-down strip mall, you normally don't think "quality" but this place was unspeakably awesome. The hostess and the servers were all super friendly, the food was hot, the chips were warm and the portions were freakin' huge. There's really nothing not to like unless you count the Christian bookstore two doors down (which has since been closed!).
I'm a regular!
I've been coming here since I was like 16yrs old. The staff that worked there then are still there now....only older...and some have had babies. It is so warm and inviting. They are not overly friendly or fake whatsoever. One thing I love is that they totally read you so if you aren't feeling sociable and small talky, they let you be. If you are friendly, they'll get to know you. Just sort of depends on what mood YOU are in. I like.
The service is really good but they get swamped after 6pmish Thur., Fr., Sat., and Sun. It is a hole in the wall so be prepared if coming during this time to be cramped in the front waiting for 30 min. It's a teeny place with a lot of character and charm.
To be honest, I've taken every person I know here(save for one or two Ballard peeps that haven't made the journey south). It's the kind of place that you will want to come back to and if your first experience here was not awesome, I suggest you give it one more try. Everyone deserves a second chance and La Costa is a great example of why.
I struggled in finding decent Mex in the Pac Northwest. I now have eaten at La Costa 4 times, and each time has been consistently good. Service is great, and you really get a great value here
So this place definitely isn't as good as Mexican food you'll find in the southwest but it's pretty darn tasty. For what I've had in the Seattle area, it's awesome. The portions are *huge* on most items so be prepared to have to-go boxes. I got a Chalupa combo (though the shells were hard and I've always had soft-shelled chalupas which kind of made me angry but whatever) and the chalupas were bigger than the to go boxes. I probably could have had 3-4 meals out of what was on my plate.
The service seems pretty good and speedy. People may not come back and ask if anything is okay but your drink is always full and your waiter is frequently nearby.
Oh and what amused me is if you don't like Mexican food but end up at this place they have a small "USA menu" on the back that includes a cheeseburger and the like.
The menu is extensive and can be a bit confusing but teh food makes it worth it.
Well Thank you SO much Yelpers The Food was Great very big portions and the price was great the Carne Asada is what my husband and I always order and it was very good the place is kind hidden but what i see is Spanish people eat here so I consider that as a thumb's Up all by itself and we have been going to Viva Mexico Restaurant in West Seattle for years but the price kept going up and the food was getting worse depending on what day you go and that is what inspired me to look into finding another Mexican spot close to home and I did Thanks Much to the people that came to http://Yelp.com and shared their experience at La Costa
I have been going here since I was a kid. I'm now 35 w/kids of my own. Love it. It has never changed (ok, it was expanded years back) but has always kept people coming in & the food is great. Drinks are good as well. Mariachi on the weekends - love it, except sometimes when it's right in your ear. My kids love the beans they serve w/chips & salsa. Chips are just used to shovel beans in your face & can apparently be reused (note to kids - gross!) . A favorite. Got a sitter? Go here!
This place makes great food! A wonderful little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant that you will enjoy any day of the week. The burritos are great and the people here are very friendly.
Very disappointed. My co-worker told me this place is great. I tried it out and it was a slight step above my Azteca experience. I don't know... maybe it's because i'm from southern california and have tasted some amazing mexican food, but this stuff was absolutely TERRIBLE!
Great authentic mexican food!
