How is this not one of the best coffee houses you'll pop into in the area?  Answer: There is no way it is not, it is awesome and you love it just as much as me!

Great caffeine concoctions, lots of seating, floor to ceiling windows give it a cool ambiance looking out on to the rather quiet street, and great service!  Yup, this is your place, you're welcome!

    NO BATHROOM.

This review is not typical. I had to use the restroom upon arrival so when they told me there wasn't one I didn't order.

I was waiting for someone for a business meeting and already uncomfortable.

The space is just an open room which mean it was freezing in the entire room on a cold day. Counter on one side and uncomfortable patrons on the other side almost like we were in a fleeting staring competition with each other.

The seating is SO awkward. One long wooden bench which is incredibly smooth and slippery, especially for woman wearing skirts, runs along the longer wall. The asymmetrical shaped tables made it impossible to get positioned gracefully. If you don't sit in the slippery wooden bench there are small wooden stools that move around. But their proportion compared to the bench was off - they were much lower and seemed more like they were for children than adults.

The person I was waiting for ordered a coffee which came in a very nice cup, albeit one of the smallest cups I've ever seen. He also appeared hunched over and moved around a lot because of the awkward seating.

It smelled good, and I wish I could have tasted it, but the no bathroom concept in a cafe that serves coffee wasn't what I bargained for.

To-go seemed to be the option of choice for most people who came in - and the to-go cups seemed like a better deal from the size.

I'm not sure who the designer of this place was, but I'm guessing its someone who worked on the set of Alice In Wonderland because everything was so out of proportion to everything else within this small space.(ie: larger to-go cups compared to small stay-in tea cups / wooden bench compared to movable stools / unused open space compared to available seating / serving beverages with no bathroom)

    Staff seemed friendly though.

It's not that I don't love the place, I do. They make solid lattes and I've taken home their beans many a time with great satisfaction. It's just not Joe's. There, I said it.

On the up side though, the staff is always wonderful, equipped with a hottie barista (is that ok to call a man?) and I admit I do love the warm vibe with the dark wood panels and charming indigo and white coffee cups. Defiantly a place you want to take your coffee to stay. :)

    Cash only!

Garbage. Don't have anything, not even soy, for vegans. How can a coffee shop in NYC not accommodate non-dairy drinkers???

Also, I've had the coffee black before. Bitter, not rich and flavorful=bad roasts and/or bad baristas?

I found this place after getting off from Chamber St. station in the early afternoon (around 1 pm on a weekday) looking for a place to hangout while waiting in between meetings. The place is very cute, comfy and not overly crowded. The ambience is nice. I agree with the other reviewers on  the simplicity, which I think contribute to their service being very quick. They have no coffee menu, but I think they make most of the regular coffee and espresso drinks.

I got a cup of delicious latte poured with latte art. It was aromatic without being overly bitter and my skim milk microfoam was as fine as it should be. I would definitely come back for more caffeine fix here.

They also have a small selection of bakery including a soho glob look a like which I'm looking forward to trying the next time I have a chance to stop by.

Alright, so this place deserves at least 4 stars if we are talking solely about the coffee quality. I must admit, the coffee here is good. Not good enough to get over the insanely  pretentious attitude given by all of the barista's. I did not appreciate it. I don't think its worth going to because of the attitude. However, if you just want a really good americano, then take a quick stop and try to vacate as quickly as possible, the hipsters might get you lol

Loved the location, decor.  Very quick service and despite an insanely long line I did not feel like I was treated like a herd of cattle (ahem, STARBUCKS). Also like that they put out a plate and spoon for each person to stir their drinks with. Very cool spot.  I imagine myself spending a lot of time here..that is if I didn't live in California.

I LOVE La Colombe.  This is easily the best quality coffee I have had in New York, and without any of those fancy (and overwrought) Clover machines that Starbucks is rolling out and a few other coffee shops have (from before Starbucks bought the Clover manufacturer).

The best part (other than the deliciousness) is the simplicity and price. Everything is either $2.50 or $3, and comes in one (very generous) size. They don't do anything flavored or special, but they will make anything black (drip or espresso) or with milk (latte, etc) with great skill. Their iced coffee (drip + 2 shots of espresso) and iced americano (4 shots of espresso!) are absolutely killer, and despite being strong are smooth enough that I happily drink them black. Despite what some have said I thought they had soy milk, but I guess I was wrong. It's likely that they don't have anything with which to foam it separately from the milk as such a small operation.

Beans are similarly cheap (less than $15 for a normal size bag if I recall) and knock the socks off of what you're going to get at Starbucks, except perhaps for one or two specialty seasonal blends.

Decor is simple and quaint (I love brick walls) but to be truthful the seats are rather uncomfortable though they are made out of high quality wood.

I wouldn't bother with the baked goods, they're nothing to write home about.

I came here today because I had heard a few good things.  That and well Yelpers like the place, so it *must* be good.  What's more I had already exhausted all primo espresso in Tribeca.  Perhaps years ago!

So I rode my fixed gear along Church and locked up outside.  Upon walking up to the place, I liked the building.  The logo, the entrance.  All sexy.

I also liked the space itself, very open, very slick.  Tables are really nice.  I also noticed they hit all the hot points for guilty manhattanites.  Must be organic, must be free trade, must give lip service to the poor people of the world we exploit!  So there is a picture of a favela on the wall which I find incongruent, and disengenuous.  But I digress...

I'm here for the espresso right, so I order one up.   Single shot or double?  Ummm... oh I think, that's original.  Quizzical look.  Usually only b or c-list places ask that question.  I know I know.  Picky.  Yeah, I'll have a double ristretto though, please.

Ristretto means restricted, it means they pull the shot for a short period of time.  It doesn't run as long, less watery, sharper taste.  Creamy.  That's what I like.

That's what this was not.  It was watery, and frankly tasted slightly burnt.  I felt like I was getting an amateur shot from Starbucks, not as bad as a deli espresso but still.

At this point a discussion on cup-quality, and barrista insider secrets might be due, but the truth is I don't know what the gurus know.  I don't know what the regional barrista champion (RBC) barristas do to tune the machine, adjust the dials, change the humidity setting, or otherwise perfect the perfection.  I just know they do.  And I know how good it tastes.  I look for the crema on top, I look for some color striations in the brown and tan colors on top of the shot.

All these good things were missing, and frankly I am tempted to say...
Torrefaction = fail.  But I won't go that far.  The space is super super cute, and stylish, the people are their sexy Tribeca selves, and being superficial, I'll give them a few points for trying.

A latte (they use organic milk) and a flaky almond croissant from La Colombe is IMHO a  heavenly way to start the day.  When trekking into the city, I make sure to stay at a hotel nearby just so I can stop by in the morning (and afternoon) for my brew.

Friendly baristas who make fantastic lattes.   Just as wonderful as the Philly Rittenhouse Sqaure location which started my love affair with La Colombe.

I try to stop in here whenever I'm anywhere near Tribeca.  My rating is based solely on their coffee and iced coffee.  The coffee is always fresh.  Their use of only organic milk demonstrates La Colombe's dedication to high quality ingredients.  I wouldn't let the lack of drink menu scare you off as the baristas are extremely pleasant and friendly.

$2 for a coffee and $2.50 for an Iced Coffee is an excellent value for the high quality product.

Seriously? They don't stock soy milk? I left my paid-for Americano sitting on the counter and left in shock after the guy who made it unapologetically told me, "We don't stock soy milk," without making eye contact. At this point and in this part of the country not stocking soy milk at a coffee shop is just making a point to be antagonistic to those who avoid dairy for medical or ethical reasons. I guess the lactose intolerance issue hasn't come up because mostly white people patronize and work in this place.

La Colombe Torrefaction has an 'Apple Store' aesthetic. It's empty.

Tribeca post doesn't even have a menu. Two heavy, steal, serious looking espresso machines are the center of the place.

That says all. Once you walk into the place, you get the feeling. You better not order 'peppermint mocha latte' or 'gingerbread spicy cappuccino' stuff. You don't know the price of the cup, either. Don't ask. Just pay what they tell you. Be cool. It's not more expensive than Starbucks anyway.

Only simple, serious, fairly treated coffee is served here. No fancy, complicated names to order, nor bagels nor sandwiches nor soup. Coffee will tell you who they are.

Macchiato and latte are easy to start.

Firm milk frost and white bubbles of fresh espresso form a crust. Bitter sweet, full crusty texture is always a good sign. Sometimes this crust is more enjoyable than coffee drink itself. That playful interaction between the top surface of coffee and your tongue brings... Um...Safistaction.

Even though you're a coffee connoisseur who can distinguish  particular taste of particular region beans, don't try to show the talent off here. They do not label coffee where it comes from. It's only by their own roasting process. They give little attention to where beans come from, but to what beans have become in their hands. Roasting is everything. Like Helen Keller became an amazing person in Sullivan's hands. 'Torrefaction' in the name means roasting.

La Colombe is a child of two friends from Seattle, the city of caffeine; One from Washington State and one from France. Perfect mom and dad for a wonderful coffee child.

Its first coffee post is in Rittenhouse square in Philadelphia, where luxury shopping brands, old-money hotels, and modern sophistication meet. It tucked in on the corner. Very low-key presence, but vibrant enough. I loved this colorful mosaic table with a dove there. You can notice some of their coffee cups have dove figures, as well. 'Colombe' means dove in French, so it's inevitable you will see doves everywhere.

Even though I appreciate La Colombe for as it is, I can't help to compare it to others. Recently, New York has become 'California' in terms of coffee drinking. Little artisan coffee places popped up East, West Villages or near colleges. Only Columbia doesn't have a decent one yet and I do not understand why.

So let's try, in a very non-professional way.

La Colombe Torrefaction isn't claustrophobic as Abraco, nor it has a neighbor-friendly-loud quality of Joe the Art of Coffee. Also it's not crowded like Third Rail Coffee, but it's not as pretty as Stumptown. Think Coffee can't just a match either, La Colombe is more for grown-ups with style. However, it's not as scientific as Blue Bottle Coffee. Or does is refuse to do that? Fika, well, you can't beat those cute Swedish boys serving you. Ninth Street Espresso could come very close in terms of spaciousness. Gimme! Coffee seems more fast moving than La Colombe. . Cafe Grumpy...Still no one can't beat that Brooklynite's free spirit or organized rawness, to my humble opinion.

It seems like these names are becoming personal statements, too."I'm Cafe Grumpy kinda girl" or "I only drink Abraco" or "Who goes to Think Coffee?"

Coffee is a daily thing, and drinking action usually takes places in your turf, you don't drink coffee with strangers, coffee drinking usually being accompanied with your thoughts. It's personal and you want to identify this repetitive experience with somewhere you can identify with, whether it's Third Rail or La Colombe. To me, Colombe is a quite competitive contender.

    Coffee is personal.

...I know it's not professional sociological assessment. But who cares? It's my cup of coffee.

The coffee is always perfect here and served with just the right level of decorum and respect that a good cup of coffee deserves. Don't come here if you drink coffee purely for survival or you want to collect points so you can get an extra soy shot in your venti mocha the next time you swing by.

This is the place for you if you want to savor your coffee and drink it from a cup and saucer, if you like to see a smiling face at the counter but not engage in ridiculous chitchat if you don't feel like it, if you want to sit with a friend and chat or read the paper without listening to a canned soundtrack where the album playing is conveniently sold at the counter or promoted on a screen right above your face. In short, it's a classy joint for classy coffee drinkers.

My favorite hidden coffee jem. The location is much better than the Lafayette spot. It is not crowded and the attention to detail is better.

If you are shopping in SoHo then I would recommend the dreaded walk across Canal to get to this place. Just close your mind to buying an original, genuine Louey Vutton for $50 as you make your way and you will be rewarded.

    I don't understand.

    Really, I don't.

Best coffee shop in New York?

    What?

Is it the cute French-looking cups?

The smooth yet bold taste the coffee had?

The frothy foam that shows a rich meld of white and brown, illustrated with latte art? The leaf or the apple it shows?

No... can't be all that, because they were all perfect.

    ....

    I GOT IT!

It's the lack of menus! There's NO menu! People have to just walk up and order what their heart desires.

And I went for just a cappuccino.

And good lord... the best cappuccino I've had in a long while, and I felt like a king!

Best coffee in New York? Damn, don't be no Scrooge.

    It's the best in AMERICA!

What...? Gotta be nice to those Italians!

I cannot stress the importance of getting out during your lunch hour and walking around. In an attempt to get out of the office and unwind for an hour i stumbled upon this TREASURE!
I am, for lack of a better word, a coffee FIEND. My starbucks card has my name on it... and I am likely to be there several times a day. I dont think its the best stuff on the planet but it certainly satisfies the need for a "hit". know what i mean?
Now COLOMBE is the Mecca for espresso. When you first walk in you can smell the caramel notes from a good quality shot of espresso. So good that a long pulled shot of espresso and its creamy froth on top is all i need to escape.
The staff is always awesome and they are quite talented the way they pour the heated milk into cutey designs. Almost too pretty to drink... ALMOST.

I'm not a big coffee person but I love coming here for my mochas.  I can just tell that this is a haven for coffee, latte and espresso drinkers.  Maybe La Columbe will convert me to a coffee drinker?

It's such a treat coming here for breakfast.  It makes your morning at work more pleasurable :-) I absolutely love their pastries, especially their almond croissant, so rich in flavor yet delicate in texture.  I heard they recently changed vendors so I have yet to try their new pastries.

i went to the church street location on 3/29 around 4/5 pm.
i ordered a latte and watched the girl making one on their great faema e61. what a f'''''g disgusting mess!!!
the barista unlocked the portafilter, knocked out the puck and put it straight under the chute of the grinder. no cleaning, no wiping dry!! ???
with all the residual grounds from the previous shot still sticking to the rim of the portafilter she locked it back in the grouphead. i watched her doing that one shot after the other, maybe 5 shots before i had enough and moved on. the latte was bad, i had only a few sips coz i needed a coffee but did not finish it.

Consider this a 4.5 stars.  I love the coffee and they may well have the best or second-best cappuccino in the city.  (Hint: it's the milk.)  For me, this is just the right kind of vibe-- not snooty, not too crowded (only about 6 tables), and really wonderful pastries (like olive oil cake, my favorite) to go with the coffee.  I have to pause for a second to acknowledge there's no wi-fi-- and that's probably the only thing that keeps me from going there every day.  But there are outlets, and I've gotten a lot of good work done there so... maybe it would disrupt the balance somehow if they did.

No doubt, a treasured neighborhood gem, worthy of pilgrimage.

The place hits the mark on so many different levels.  Great vibe from the minute you walk in.  Friendly baristas.  Great espresso drinks.  Wonderful presentation.

I had almost given up hope of ever finding a decent latte in New York.  Then I did what I usually do in cases like this... I went on Yelp.  Guided by my fellow Yelpers, I geared up for the twenty block walk in the 5 degree wind chill.  It was worth every bone chilling step.

I went fairly early on a Sunday morning and there was no crowd and plenty of open tables.  These people are purists... no menu, no convoluted malt shop drinks... just order what you want so long as it's an espresso, cappuccino or latte.  I ordered my cappuccino, enjoyed an incredible almond cake pastry (just like the kind my fantasy Italian grandmother would make) and opened the Sunday Times to the Travel section.  Can't think of a better way to spend a morning in New York.

Do you believe in love at first sight? Or, should I walk by again?

Didn't do it for you, huh? Never worked for me, either! :)   Rather than relying on tired one-liners, witty introductions, or rehearsed routines, I believe it helps simply to put one's best foot forward. Coffee is my drink of choice when it comes to liquid fortification for, business, negotiations.

I am NOT a morning person, and on one dreary day recently was struggling to convince a colleague in another line of business to support my business plan. As his phone rang, I realized that I needed a strong cup of Joe to help me focus. We agreed to defer the discussion for another hour as I rushed outside to find a suitable ally. Walking past the ubiquitous Badbucks (with gratitude for their public restrooms), I reached a cafe that serves drinks made from beans roasted by artisanal coffee roaster, La Colombe.

Proving, yet again, that the best things in life are simple, La Colombe serves only five blends of coffee by the pound and does away with frills, syrups or other unnecessary add-ins in their hot or iced coffee drinks. However, it executes on the basics really well and has delicious coffee and espresso drinks. Their baristas are the most artistic that I've come across and it would be hard for anyone to contend this assertion. Skeptics may take note of their artwork from the "gallery" in this link, and forever hold their peace. http://www.lacolombe.c...

The cafe serves baked goods from Petrossian and indeed the monstrous double chocolate cookies are a delight, as noted in an earlier review (http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) Colleagues who work in the neighborhood also swear by the Apricot Pistachio croissants.

La Colombe's main market is wholesale. They use the cafes to showcase their outstanding product. However, you will not find La Colombe in retail outlets, such as Whole Foods, as they want to exercise complete control over the freshness of their product. This laser focus on quality has led La Colombe to being the coffee of choice for the Top rated restaurants. Hey, if they are good enough for Jean Georges, Danny Meyer, Le Bernardin, Stephen Starr, Tom Colicchio, Daniel, Le Bec Fin (and almost the entire list of upscale Philly restaurants), they certainly are good enough for me!

Yes, the store is somewhat minimalist in decor with a wooden bench and wooden chairs and tables to seat ~ 20 customers, but keep in mind that you are here primarily to drink an excellent cup of coffee or the silkiest cappuccino imaginable, in fine china as opposed to in disposable cups.

Sadly, despite my caffeine fortification, I got no traction in my negotiations. Life, after all is not a Bollywood movie with a contrived happy ending (who doesn't love them?). However, I was more disappointed at not being able to help out the snarkiest connoisseur imaginable of foamy cappuccino, who apparently was driving round the cafe in circles searching for a parking spot.  As he was there on my strong endorsement, perhaps more so on account of the gravitational pull of another educated cappuccino lover, my heart goes out to him at seeing the fallen foam in his cup. But, hey, the cup doesn't always runneth over. Particularly, if the coffee is amazing :)

I love love love this place. Such good espresso-based drinks! Their drip coffee is pretty good too, but I'm not much of a fan of drip coffee when I can get my favorite cafe latte in the city. Seriously delicious. I buy their beans & make La Colombe lattes at home, but I can't make the nice designs in the foam the way they do.

Also, very friendly staff. The manager has donated carafes of coffee for events for the nonprofit art space I work for a few times. He's usually at their newer location on Lafayette so I visited there recently, it doesn't look the same, though it also has nice wood detailing.

I toyed with 4 and then settled on 5, feeling that 4 was a little too coy, making you wonder what it would take for that extra star.  Enough of the coquette, you get all 5 La Colombe!

It's a cafe, so let's just deal with the coffee upfront: superb.  It was the perfect blend of nuttiness without veering into burnt, slightly sweet and balanced, beautifully made with a fern in the milk.  The cups are lovely, well balanced and beautifully presented.

The space itself is really lovely; it's a corner spot with high ceilings so it's very open and light with decent people watching without feeling cold or stark or exposed.  The furnishings are understated, nicely designed; I would have wished for more seating but perhaps that would have cramped the space a bit too much.  Everything here is very streamlined but in a warm and cozy way, nothing extraneous.

The barista was really divine, a good balance of expertise and graciousness.  Are we so ruined by crappy Whole Foods' cashiers and Kinko's counterpeople that anyone who says thank you in this city makes us fall on our knees and wrap ourselves around that person's feet in gratitude?  I just called a barista "divine"...I think I have the New York consumer's version of "beaten wife syndrome.

I don't know if you would feel comfortable settling down in this place for hours to write your thesis but there are other places for that.  The comfortable refinement of La Colombe will keep you coming back and lingering.

Fresh from Philadelphia, where it is a beloved institution, La Colombe Torrefaction has opened its doors here in NYC, in a beautiful TriBeCa building.  I've spent hours upon hours in the one in the city of Brotherly Love, and it is one of the things I missed most when I moved to NYC.  I visited today for a cappuccino, and all the old memories came flooding back - wonderful coffee, great pastries, real china cups, good service, and the relaxed and bohemian atmosphere.  La Colombe routinely makes those "that's the best cappuccino I've ever had"s over and over again, and the one I had today was the same.  Maybe because La Colombe roasts its own coffee (and available for take-away purchase, whole-bean or ground) and my favorite barista from Philly is now living in NY and working there.

I had a delicious almond croissant, and the cappuccino was fantastic.  I couldn't imagine a better one, only ones that are on par with it, and it's a welcome addition to NYC.  It's one of those places you hope doesn't get too crowded, since there aren't a billion tables, because you always want room there for you!  So, please, rush to La Colombe for a relaxing cup of coffee, but make sure you leave a seat there for me, okay?

    Dear Sunday,

Friday and Saturday may have cornered the market in my alcohol consumption. But, you are inextricably linked with my caffeine, no, my La Colombe consumption and keep me conscious for the long week ahead. For that, you should be proud.

    Your friend,
    Chris

No need to go to Philly just to get lbs of this great coffee now!

I usually just get their drip coffee - their Corsica blend is smooth, nutty, dark and strong but not overly bitter or acidic. At the cafe, the baristas will make pretty designs with your foam if you order a cappucino/latte. :)
