La Cocina was a surprise. Truth or Consequences is a small burg, not the kind of place you'd move to if your food needs include sushi or late night tapas. We ate here last time I was in T or C because it was recommended by the nice lady at the local visitor center.
First thing is - the food is huge, and cheap. While their menu does include a $25 Porterhouse, most of their plates are around $6-7.
I ordered a grilled chicken burrito. A platter sized monster, swimming in green chilies, this was a real treat. It's basic Southwestern Mexican food for an American palate. The tamales here are excellent too - no skimping on the spice in their shredded beef.
The sopapillas here are the size of your head - a half order of two could easily feed four people.
They also have "American" food on their menu, and their fried chicken was mentioned to me as being very good, but I didn't try it. They cut and age their own meat here, which is a plus, and the staff is really attentive and nice. -

I remember how great this place used to be. I used to walk there before I could drive just for the sopa-pillows when it was on third and date streets. When they opened their new location it was exciting and the food was great. I have been there twice in 2010 when I go back home. Both times were very disappointing.
The last time was December 29th and the food took forever to come out. It had to be at least 35 minutes. When it came out it was all cold and we had to send two entrees back because they were cooked incorrectly. My compuesta was cold and the sopapilla seemed to be stale. When we wanted to leave we could not find our server or any employee anywhere. There was only us and one other table there. We eventually left cash on the table for what we thought would cover the tab and walked out.
The one positive thing is that this meal was allot better than the last time I came. All I can say is that I won't be going back and that really hurts because this was once one of my favorite places to go. -

Like other reviews for this place that are floating around, I found the steak to be large and seasoned well. Now, if it had just been delivered to me in under 30-40 minutes (at our table) and still hot, it would have been even better. Hot onion rings and an $8 salad that wasn't swimming in dressing would have been really great as well.
If you even think of ordering the child's taco with fries, walk over to a nearby table and have a local pimp-slap you back to your senses. When it hit the table it was only barely warm like the fries, but it had sat on the counter for so long in its own grease that I couldn't even pick it up - the bottom half of the shell was just mush. I did taste it though and it was the nastiest thing I'd eaten on this trip.
Eating at this place depends on getting seated. The girl at the counter (Tuesday - not packed) took down the names of the two groups of people on either side of us to get seated and only the decency of a fellow diner allowed us to get on the list. This inattentiveness doesn't seem to stop at the front desk either. We were seated at a table that was dripping wet from the sloppy bus towel that was laying on the next booth over. A handful of paper towels cleaned up most of it and we were able to keep things from floating off of the table.
I gave this place two stars because the air conditioner worked well and the beer that my wife ordered was cold. If you feel like your wallet needs to be lightened by about three $20 bills - go for it.
My wife and I like to try local places like this, but with the slim pickin's in TorC, we might just stop in Socorro next time so we can eat at the Black Dog.
