I used to come here on Sundays when El Patio was closed. Wasnt there some connection with this place and El Patio, like the chef came from there? Not sure but anyways. I like this place a lot. They have good service and some tasty food. My husband and I have stoppped by just for a drink there a few times. Unlike El Patio they have a proper bar with stools so you can sit down (no disrespect to El Patio or anything:).

My family and I have eaten at La Casita for years. Of course, over time, prices have gone up, and I think the food quality isn't as good as it used be, hence I'm only giving it three stars. Service isn't the best, especially when they are super busy. However, this is the only place I know that serves menudo (tripe & hominy) daily. That's great stuff.
OK..I am biased...Very much so...
I LOVE Mexican food for one..and second.....this place gave me one of my first jobs when I was in HS.
It is family owned...and operated, and I think has been here for...over 30+ years! Don't quote me on that, but.....I remembering coming here in the 70's as a kid with my family when it was a drive up, window ONLY!
Aside from that...My last meal before I shipped to Japan in (a LONG time ago!) was here...and then, after a 20+ year absence I came back, and honestly..the food is still the same.....!
The bar is GREAT! The service was very good, (yes, I ran into people who kept looking at me, saying.."I know you...where do i know you from??" as they worked with me back in the day.....
And the food..People..the FOOD ROCKS!
I missed it sooo much....and used to discuss it's merits with people I met world wide....
prices have come up..as would be expected...but...consistantly, everything is as it was in 1985 when I sat down in dress blues, had a beer, and chili Colorado and said good byes to my co-workers and friends.....
If you like Mexican food..it is worth a trip to come in, sit down, tuck in...and enjoy yourself.
(As long as it is not a Friday night when the wait is 1+ hours) But I hear that if you tip the Host a $20, he can get you to the head of the line...(I used to charge $5 back in the day, but.,...WTF..Inflation, ya know???) LOL

My favorite Mexican restaurant. but I'm biased. Like a handful of other yelpers, this is the place I went growing up. And not much has changed. Same decor since the 80s (although they upgraded to the white tile on the walls in the 90s...)
I recommend heading over to the bar if there's a long wait. Who doesn't need a little divy-esque experience every now and then? It's super tiny with two televisions for sports watching. Usually the bar is filled with regulars, which makes for great people watching. When I went, a few were sluring a bit, but having a good time, which made for a more interesting adventure. Someone bought the bar a round, and who can not have a good time when that happens?
The bartender was great. Super fast and friendly. You can even order food at the bar, and they they give you chips and salsa while you wait. I have no idea what the deep red (w/o chunks) salsa is called, but it's awesome. Not too spicy, but really flavorful.
Once you're seated (or ordering at the bar) make sure you get a bowl of the chicken and rice soup. It is delicious. Probably my favorite soup in the world. A tomato/chicken broth base, with shredded chicken, broken rice, and some secret seasoning (probably S&P). It still tastes excellent after all these years! I highly recommend adding a few of their chips into the soup... get them slightly soggy and gobble them up. that's probably another childhood throwback.
I also think they have the best tacos around. There's something about the cheese on top and the big slide of tomato on the inside. Most other tacos are super greasy. Not these ones. They are just crisp and flavorful. I always opt for the #5 combo: beef enchilada and taco, and I pay extra for chicken on the taco. And they don't completely drown the enchiladas in sauce. I love their sauce, but like to actually taste the other flavors of the meal; something other restaurants don't let me enjoy. The plate is served extra hot with really good refried beans, and fluffy/tasty/tomatoy rice.
My friend ordered the chili verde and was a little sad that it matched to the description: pork with green chilies. He was hoping for a green chili sauce. He still gobbled it up and said it was good.
Dinners are typically under $10 apiece. We had two dinners and two drinks for under $40 (including tip).
First things first: why are those women's pictures up for this restaurant? That's weird.
Anyhow, this is by no means the "best Mexican restaurant" I've been to, but it does have a charm to it in the old, 70s-style residence that houses the restaurant (complete with a full bar full of locals who acted like regulars).
Our server was great, and seemed to man the whole dining area on his own. We started with the much-talked-about chicken and rice soup. It consisted of chicken, rice, and salty chicken broth--not bad, but sort of bland. We tried the pork tamale, cheese enchiladas, tostada, chimichanga, and rice and beans between us. The standout for me was the chimichanga and the beans (which I don't even normally like). The cheese enchis had onions in them, which was weird to me, and their red sauce lacked spice and flavor.
A big plus is their HUGE portions! We easily had enough to take home for another meal later. Their salsa is pretty good too (but again, could've been spicier).
Lots of people were ordering their "famous" soup to-go--probably a great remedy for colds and the freezing winter weather.
The lack of flavor is what turns me off; everything tasted sort of bland and greasy (well, the grease is to be expected).
My quest for great Mexican food in Fremont continues....

today is the third time I've been here, and have not been disappointed any of those times. I ordered a lunch of the Camarones a la Casita--shrimp in a great kicked up sauce served with rice, beans, and a choice of flour or corn tortillas. While the sauce had some fire in it, this did not overpower the flavor of the shrimp. I also like the scalloped potato dish with plenty of cheese and chilies--I need to order that again at some point. I can't really compare this to La Pinata because it seems like the dishes at both establishments are different. Overall, great quality; this Yelper will be back for sure!

This is my favorite mexican restaurant.
I absolutely LOVE their pork tamales! They are the best. The sauce that comes on it is so gOOd too. Definately add the chicken and rice soup to your meal for $1 extra. Mmm.. yummy. Their 2-3 item combos are a good deal around $10 comes with rice and refried beans. Their rice is cooked to perfection and flavorful. They sprinkle cheese on the refried beans too.
Chile Rellenos and cheese enchiladas are good too.
I've had the steak fajitas before and it was blah. Not very flavorful. Comes as a thin piece of steak whole. You cut it up yourself.
The ambiance is nice and cozy. Decent sized restaurant. Not a taqueria. The even have sports bar area by the entrance thats always packed.
This place seems to have gone downhill a bit. :(
I remember the chips and salsa being really good here...but when I went today, the chips were cold and almost stale. One thing hasn't changed though, the chicken rice soup is SO GOOD. I get it every time. It comes in either a cup or bowl size. The "cup" portion is plenty, it actually comes in a fairly big bowl. The "bowl" portion is ridiculously large...it's only $1 extra, but could feed like 3 people.
I find the food average. I've had the enchiladas, tamales, and quesadillas and nothing has really impressed me. Also, for some reason, I find the meat here to be a little questionable. If I go again with coworkers, I'll probably just stick to chips and chicken rice soup.

Driving to this restaurant was slightly confusing at first because #1: there was a fair going on down the street and some roads were blocked off and #2: Fremont Blvd turns into Washington and the restaurant suddenly disappeared! The outside of the restaurant is very traditional looking and because of the blinds, you can't really peek into the interior which also explains the slightly dim lighting.
We got there on a Sunday afternoon around 1 p.m. and the restaurant was 75% full. Once you enter, there's a semi-enclosed bar on your right.
A server immediately brought out a basket of warm tortilla chips and mildy spicy salsa. The chips were very crunchy and the salsa was delicious, not too spicy not too bland. Not long after, the waitress came out and I ordered an Enchilada/Flautas Combination ($8.75).
After about 20 minutes (a bit longer than desired but reasonable considering how packed the restaurant was), my piping hot plate came out. Every item on my plate was topped with cheese, just the way my lactose tolerant body likes it. Normally I love refried beans but these were too dry and I didn't even eat half of the portion. Portions were huge by the way (I only finished half my plate and still felt like a beached whale). The one beef enchilada sauce was unique and full of flavor, not spicy. There were two beef flautas were very crunchy and unlike many other flautas I've had, they weren't oily at all. The rice was moist and mixed with shredded cheese (instead of topped).
Bathrooms were not particularly the cleanest but I didn't expect them to be. I'd make a return visit if I was in the area and if I'm extremely famished! When it comes to Mexican food, I take pride in paying the least amount possible!
**UPDATED 2/23/08: Went here on a Saturday night with about 9 other friends and the wait took FOREVER! It was so bumpin' there. I was so hungry that I ate an entire basket of chips by myself and the salsa was super spicy. For my main dish, I got the seafood enchiladas and I enjoyed it a lot. There is definitely more shrimp than fish in it but the green sauce is refreshing. The beans and rice were also well cooked this time... much better than my last visit. I changed my rating from 3 to 4 because it was good and you can definitely tell by the large crowds.

THE BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT WITHOUT A DOUBT. I have been going for YEARS (too many to remember) and have yet to find a better salsa, group of people and warm atmosphere.. no one compares and trust me Ive been to a lot of Mexican restaurants... we're always curious if anyone comes close and hold La Casita up as the one to beat, have YET to find anyone.... now if I could only figure out the sauce recipe! ;) The nachos w/ enchilada sauce is the best, the enchilada sauce is the best I have had and both salsas (req. both kinds - the blended version is a bit spicier and yummy). All around you cant go wrong... also the new seafood soup is the best thing during a cold night! I love everything here and have had almost every dish. ENJOY!
The food is good here. Less pricier than Los Charros in Mtn. View for the Combo Plates - $9.95 as opposed to $13.95 at Los Charros. I ordered a chicken tamale and flauta but they gave me beef. Good thing that I'm also a beef eater and hungry that night for I would have been a little PO'd. My food was delicious, could not finish so I brought it home. Chips and salsa are good. If you order a salad to go with your meal, make sure to ask for light salad dressing or else they will drench your salad in it!

Great restaurant and Great Service!!! I visited the restaurant for the first time last month. Since then I have been back 3 times. I recommend this restaurant to any one who loves mexican food and a good margarita. Try the fish tacos. They rock!!!!! I just wish they would remodel the dining room. It looks like it hasn't been done for many years.
A great authentic Mexican restaurant. Family owned and operated since FOREVER. I've been going to the Fremont location since I was a little one and now I bring my little kids there too. The food is amazing... you cannot go wrong with anything you order. I especially love the La Casita burrito and the Chile Verde Conqueso....... OMG, just talking about it makes my mouth water!!! Worth the drive from where ever you are in the Bay Area. (BTW, Arturo even gave us the secret family recipe to the chicken and rice soup.... TO DIE FOR!)
Pretty decent mexican place. The restaurant is pretty cute, with all the murals on the walls. They have really good margaritas here, especially the top-shelf "Cadillac" margaritas. I really like their chips and salsa, I can eat buckets of them, and often eat too much that I have to take most of my entree home. Not that I wouldn't anyway, since their portions are very generous, even without any chips I still could not finish a whole entree. I really like their chipotle chicken quesadillas...they put so much chicken in there, it's yummy....the sauce is pretty good too. Their chicken soup is much better than at El Patio's.
They seem to be pretty busy on the weekends for dinner, but the service is usually pretty good. I haven't found too many mexican places that are as good as the ones I've been to in the south bay, but this is pretty good for a local joint.
This is probably one of Fremont's oldest sit down Mexican Restaurants so it is very established in it's neighborhood, servicing mostly Irvington and Mission districts. The food is okay and the menu has been updated over the years to reflect certain trends but i seem to keep on ordering the same few things, and am rarely disappointed.
Ordered the menudo today, a little hungover from Superbowl weekend, and it hit the spot. Not the best in the area but definitely not bad, generous small bowl and it's on their regular menu (some places only offer it on weekends). I've also ordered their enchiladas verde and they are very good. Chicken enchiladas in a tangy tomatillo sauce with salsa and sour cream, good rice and refried beans and its on like Donkey Kong.
I stick to Bohemias and Pacificos here cause the margaritas are too sweet and artificial tasting for me, though they are very popular. The bar area actually is its own entity, with some serious old school drinkers chillin and playin dice.

I have been coming to La Casita for over ten years. While in high school and junior high I had nearly EVERY dinner for my birthday at this place. Considering this I have basically grown up seeing the same boys/men bussing tables, seating people and taking orders. As I have had a few different mishaps here, (I have called ahead for a reservation for my birthdays and come twice and the tables were not ready and infact, the place was packed so it was tough to get everyone seated,) I still will rate this place a 5.
There has never been a mexican restaurant that could beat La Casita's soup... nor can they beat their enchiladas. I literally would DIE if this place EVER went out of business. I absolutely love this place... right when I walk in the door I'm always greeted with a smile, the salsa is THE BEST, the soup is TO DIE for and the enchiladas, rice and beans are always ON HIT. :]
I've tried numerous Mexican restaurants and NOTHING HAS EVER COMPARED.
Lastly, I would like to address all the complaints about the "grumpy old man", as I will agree that he is not ALWAYS the friendliest, I would say he always knows exactly what I want when I come in and he is always happy when I see him, although he is VERY busy, he is happy. So maybe if you would be a little more cheerful he might give you the same back... just a thought.

Four stars...but slightly below La Pinata in my book.
This was my favorite place in Fremont in 2001 and 2002, but has gradually gone downhill (though just slightly). The food is pretty good. But as the "old man" as people call him gets older, the service and attitude continues to get worse. A simple cheese enchilada and beef taco with beans and rice is always a good choice. The soup is really good, too, as are the salads (I like the bleu cheese dressing, and the fact the salads are always nice and cold). Also great chips and salsa, and very good frozen midori margarita. Don't miss it!
The old man...well...think "soup nazi" of mexican food. Yeah, he's rude, but it's all part of the experience. I try to make this place a fairly regular stop in my mexican food circuit. I like the atmosphere inside of a convered house. I like the fact it is family run (not a chain). But La Pinata's food is comparable, and the service there is much better (though it doesn't feel like "home").

I think I'm giving this place 5 stars based more on sentimentality than food.
To be honest, I don't know what authentic Mexican food is. This place, however, seems to be a pretty good definition. What I like is the lack of frou-frouness. The food is simple, hearty and flavorful. This is probably one of the only places that my entire family can agree upon - that commends 5 stars.
We like the combos. My brother usually inhales the 2-3 combo whlie mom & I are stuffed after the single item. Dad usually gets the leftovers. Their rice and chicken soup is the BOMB. I would definitely pay the extra $1 and add the soup to your combo. Whenever I'm sick, I crave this stuff..
What's also good is their garlic shrimp dish. I don't remember the name. Again, it's VERY hearty so I recommend going in hungry or skipping the chips.
Ambiance-wise, La Casita serves everyone. It's darkly lit with wooden tables and booths appropriate for couples & families. There are also larger tables in the back as well as the ability to, I believe, reserve the back room.
I know the server that is mentioned...but he doesn't seem grumpy to me, just busy. I don't ever recall having bad service.

First let me just say that my mother's tacos, enchiladas, and tamales can't be beat...from the Mexican Mama herself, no restaurant can compare.
OK, got that compliment out of the way. On to the review. Hubby and I have been to this establishment many times, with friends and on our own. Went last night as I got home late (thanks, BART) and didn't want to cook. If this had been our first time at La Casita, we would not have returned. While the food was great, the service was terrible...and we've had this guy before and not had it this bad.
I've read the comments here about the angry old man...some of you may be confusing him for a server; that is a terrible assumption...he is an order taker, not a server...big difference. My hubby likes to call him Alfredo, an order taker he had worked with a few years ago.
The very tasty carne asada Top Shelf burrito is supposed to come with mole sauce and cheese on top. It didn't. When he was about 1/3 of the way through, we realized this (we were both very tired) and he asked the guy if he could get the mole sauce; to which he replied, "you want the sauce?"...well, yes!! we want the sauce. My Stringer special was exactly how it should be, full of garlic, sizeable shrimp, and onions and bells in a buttery sauce...there goes the diet. Well, at least the entire meal wasn't ruined.
But, on top of the burrito incident, we sat for more than 15 minutes without a refill on his water or an offer for another beer, while my soda was refilled promptly by the busboy. By the way, it was 8:45pm when we went in, took about 5 mins for a table to be ready, and by the time our meal came, 6 tables were open and no one was waiting. Our order taker seemed more busy bussing tables than taking care of his patrons, one of whom was especially thirsty.
[While the service this time was horrible, we left a 10% tip because it is the right thing to do...they do pay tax on their SALES, so you really shouldn't leave a ZERO.]

We live right around the corner from la Casita, so we probably get food for take out more than we actually go in and sit down. The menu is pretty much like any other Mexican food that you can find and most mexican restaurants. I highly recommend the Chicken & Rice soup....it is really really good. As another reviewer commented, I do have pity on you if you get the "Grumpy Old Man" as your waiter. We have had him a few times, you can sure tell when he is not having a good day. Please dont let that detract from going there, they do have tasty food. Oh, getting a refill on your drinks can take time....so be patient
"What do we want?"
Chips and Salsa!!!
"Where should we get it?"
LA CASITA
The chips are fresh and crispy. Salsa has a great flavor, though I like it a little more thick. Their salsa is like "Pico de Gallo" meets V8 tomatoe juice. Haven't you ever gone to a salsa bar at a taqueria and mixed the pico de gallo with some of the other salsas? Yeah you have.. don't lie. Well, this is just like that but better.
I am so glad I found this place on jatbar.com. It is sometimes too hard to find a place that yelp reviewers can come to an agreement on, so jatbar is usually my comparison.
The plates were large and yummy. The chicken fajitas came with the largest chicken breast I have ever received at a restaurant. It came whole, so you had to cut it yourself, but it was just right. The flour tortillas were so so, but I would order the dish again. My bf had the combo platter, and he loved it.
It may not be the best all around Mexican food in the Bay, but it meets the good and worth coming back criteria.

I've been going to La Casita for over 7 years and it is still the same as I can remember! From the family style services and food, everything about this place is great.
It is a very small restaurant, and considering that there are really no good authentic Mexican restaurants in Fremont, this is one of the cutest and all around best offered.
Food selection is great..theres a huge variety. The only thing is that prices have def. increased within the last few years..
The tomato rice soup is their signature soup. Pretty tasty!
Pros:
+ authentic
+ family style environment
+ the chips and salsa are amazing! still the best I've had
+ decent prices
+ great decor and environment. outside is really cute, too!
+ bonus points: bar area for those who like beer
Cons:
- prices have gone up a little..but still decent!
- furniture is getting a little worn down.. hah
La Casita is the best sit down Mexican restaurant in Fremont hands down. The soup is legendary and well worth the price of an entree itself. The wait staff has been largely the same for years and yes the Old Man can be frustrating at times and has his moments but only on rare occasions. The Fajitas are excellent but I think their signature plate is their red and green enchiladas which are excellent. Green enchiladas , enchiladas "suizas" or "verde" are hard to find and good ones are even harder to find and this place has the best ones in the area.

La Casita is just okay in my book. The food is okay...too big of portions of mostly sloppy beans and rice. I do have admit their chicken/rice soup is tasty! The ambiance is crap. The place is always dirty! The service seems to be an afterthought most of the time.
I cannot understand why it is always crowded. I, too, have been waited on by the grumpy old man that other reviewers have mentioned. Put him out to pasture...he is bad for business.
The drinks are good. Strong and kind of pricey (IMO). After discovering Tia Juana's (which is right down the street by the Fremont/Washington mess), I don't bother with La Casita. Their food is consistently outstanding and the service is always friendly and attentive.
I hate to slam any restaurant in Fremont that is NOT a chain or Chinese buffet, but this one is WAAAAAY overrated!
Update: 1/6/08
Surprising how many people rate this the best sit-down Mexican in Fremont. Of course, that's not saying much.
This place serves mundane and standard Mexican food. Other than the chicken and rice soup, there is little different here from any other Mexican restaurant.
The service is hit-and-miss. The chips are too thick. The interior walls need to be sandblasted to get the thick accumulation of grease and food particles off it them.
We go there because it is close to our home. Since Tia Juana's closed, there is no decent Mexican place to go to. La Pinata is not even an option. It is way worse than La Casita. I guess I'm going to have to start checking out the Taco Trucks if I want to get some good Mexican food.
After reading reviews for both La Casita and La Pinata and seeing a Mexican restaurant that served very good food close, I guess Fremont gets the restaurants they deserve. Too bad.

I really enjoyed the super burrito (when they say super they mean super) and the chicken and rice soup is a must.
However, service was mediocre at best--the food took a long time, and when we asked for salsa we didn't get it until we were almost done eating.
La Casita ain't got no competition! Hands down the best mexican food around. I always order the Burrito - Enchilada dinner with beans and rice and shredded beef. Always. I spent a year in Spain and when I came back, what did I eat that first night you ask? La Casita. Oh sweet La Casita. The rice and beans are perfect, hands down. And the sauce they cook the shredded beef in... jesus, so good. And the enchilada sauce... i go here at least once a month and order extra so i can take it back to san francisco with me.
On a side note, they seem to have a nice tequila selection and their margaritas are good. The chicken rice soup is killer, but i just can't eat that much so i never order it. And their waiters are fabulous. especially the one guy who has ended up my waiter lately. always smiling and nice.
My favorite mexican restaurant in Fremont is La Casita; however, I can't say why, it just seems the most authentic. When we have a craving for fajitas, this is the place to go. The combo fajitas (chicken, steak, shrimp) are the best deal. Compared to fajitas at chain restaurants like Chili's, you get a bigger portion & is a good value. The service is impersonal most of the time but I don't know many Mexican restaurants that are any different so I overlook it.
Went to this place for a party last night and it was pretty good. I ordered the fajitas with chicken, steak, and garlicky shrimp. YUMMY!! The atmosphere was nice and the staff was pleasant.
My only real complaint was portion size. I ordered fajitas and they handed me a tortilla warmer that I was supposed to share with someone on the other side of the table. Then inside they had included only 6 tortillas for us to share. I had lots of meat and not enough to put it in. They gave me very little condiments to garnish my fajitas with also.
Other than that is was a great dining experience. The chips were crunchy and good. The margarita I ordered was heavenly and they made us feel very welcome.
I would go there again, but probably not order the same thing.
I agree with Shari; there are better places you can go to for Mexican food. To be honest, I don't think its very good, though some of coworkers might think so.... i guess that's why I only go there during group lunches. It always smells like lemon lysol when we arrive.
Classic Fremont fare. The chicken soup is a trademark, and deservedly so. Nice, homey broth with tons of chicken and rice. Very generous portions. The green salad that comes with a lot of meals is fresh and crisp. Service is attentive and reasonably friendly. The only drawback is it gets pretty packed on Friday and Saturday nites. However, an excellent choice for lunch.
I've been going to La Casita on and off over the years. The food is so-so, but beyond the food, I want to comment on the awful service that we received last week. Our waiter, an older guy, who seemed like he didn't want to be there and/or needed to retire, was so rude. He asked us if we wanted soup or salad, but it wasn't included with the meal. Usually, waiters ask if we want to add a salad, but he made it sound like it was included. Also, he didn't ask me what type of meat I wanted for my enchilada. After he took my order, I realized that he hadn't asked, so after he went to the kitchen to place the order, I had to stop him and ask if I had a choice. When he brought our food, he threw (placed) our plates on the table and roughly gave the tortilla warmer to my aunt. He never refilled our drinks or came back to ask us if we wanted anything else. In fact, when he brought the bill, he didn't thank us. Although I've gone to La Casita over the years, I won't go back again. The food is okay, but not worth the bad service.

La Casita has been one of my favorite Mexican restaurants for years. I always get the chicken chimichanga plate and it's wonderful every time. The rice and beans can make or break a Mexican restaurant for me and their's are perfect. My favorite thing about La Casita is their guacamole. It's a little pricey, but I always get it to go with my chips cause it's the best guac I've ever had. Whenever I make a 7 layer dip, I pick up a pint of their guacamole and a big bag of chips (and they give you the chips for free when you buy a pint of guac).

i got the super burrito with shredded beef and enchilada sauce. that sauce made the burrito. it was enormous. the cadillac margarita wasn't too bad either. pretty manly margarita if you ask me. the burrito though wasn't amazing, but the atmosphere is great and the service is solid. thats why its 4 stars and not tres.
