So sad to learn today (8 April) that the brothers have closed the College Ave. site.

This was my go-to Mexican food in the neighborhood, always fresh and good-tasting, and their salsas were crisp and interesting. I'm going to miss the favorite quesadilla they made for me, with black beans on the inside.,

After yoga on Saturday afternoon I had a serious craving for some fish tacos. I found this place after strolling up and down the block on such a beautiful day.

As soon as I saw the fish taco sign from outside the door, I flew in.
YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They actually deep fried some salmon :) The tacos were great!!! Excellent in taste and in size. They topped it off with this great mango salsa that was to die for. YUMMY...I can still taste it.

One con about the place would be the chips.  BOOO...tasted as if the chips were from Costco. I could pass on the chips and that was unfortunate because the variety of salsa's they had was excellent!!!!

I have never left this place in anything but a happy mood.

I go here quite often. It makes some of the best food in the area. The burritos are all great and come in worldly flavors (they have a thai burrito for example that's really good!) You really can't go wrong with any burrito from this place. The ingredients are all very fresh and great!

My favorite thing off of the menu is the Nachos Grandes! A huge heap of nachos normally reserved for appetizers but I always get it as my main course. I usually ask for it with the steak and it's really great! The salsas they out on it are fantastic and once again all of the veggies make your stomach oh so jolly!

The salsa bar is also great. They have some of the most flavorful salsas I've ever had (in the US). and the chips are great too.

The servers are all really nice and pretty fast. There is also plenty of room to sit. I've never had a problem with that. And they are great to go too! I will often call in so the food is ready when I get there.

This is a great place to head to if you're in the mood for some great Mexican!

I hate it when confronted with bad Mexican food.

Weffy ordered himself a chicken enhchilada platter and while it looked pretty and inviting, all strewn with chips, he had to unravel the enchiladas to avoid the chocolate sauce on top.  I know it's supposed to be mole, but trust me: It might've been Hershey's.  And, then he finds all that's inside is a mess of plain chicken pieces.  No onion.  No cheese.  No cilantro.  No beans.  No sauce.  No good.

My fish tacos weren't much better.  Platter was also festooned with chips, perhaps partying things up, but there was no disguising that these were salmon tacos and that was just plain weird.  Fish tacos should be made with white fish not pink fish.

The salsa bar yielded oddly uninteresting salsas meaning that there was litttle table-side remedy for Mexican food gone wrong.  The whole meal was just chock-full of off-flavors.

A sign on the walls say they won best burrito surveys in some past years.  No awards recently though, and I'd say there's a reason for that.  The owner walked by and asked if everything was good; I felt guilty nodding my head in the affirmative when it wasn't what I was feelin'.

Not bad, not bad. I came here after meeting with a friend on a week night. I wanted a quiet place to eat and hoped that an empty place would mean quick service as well.

I walked up and down the street and decided on this place. Despite only have a mom and two kids as customers, I found the two employees polite and friendly. I took a minute or so to order and proceeded to have a chicken burrito and a bottled Pepsi.

The service WAS quick as by the time I had paid and was preparing to open the bottle, the burrito was done. I realize there was no one else waiting, but wow, that was quick. I carefully popped open the top and sat down to eat.

The burrito was decent, nothing amazing. I enjoyed it after not having had a burrito for a while, but it's nothing to write home about. It was perfectly adequate with rice, chicken, beans and cheese. There was a little salsa, but unfortunately a downside was that the ingredients were not spread out to give me a nice good spread of ingredients in a burrito. Whatever, it's not the end of the world.

It was quiet on this week night, and for that I was glad. If you go, I encourage you to at least throw out your trash and put the basket on top of the trash can, because it's a sit down fast food and not a full service place. I watched as the mom and her two kids finished and trooped out, leaving behind their trash. Their choice, but they didn't appear to be in any rush and I really don't see why people are so lazy. However, this meant that pretty much as soon as they were out of sight, an employee came out and cleaned up, which was appropriate because no other customers came in while I was there.

It's close to BART and Berkeley's campus and I imagine students will easily find people they know or at least be able to watch out for them from inside. It's not an amazing Mexican place but I've had FAR worse food in college areas.

I used to go here a lot when I worked close by, so being I was in the neighborhood and had a craving for there Thai burrito I decided to swing by.

I'm not really big on Mexican food but this is an exception. It's a little whole in the wall restaurant located off of College Ave,your typical Mexican authentic decor ,bright colors, Terra cot ta tiles , Mexican tile work on the walls, and  with a huge blackboard hanging from the sealing, over the register, with there menu chalkboard written in fun, bright colors.Though there menu is anything but typical.

They have a multitude of a selection to choose from everything from Thai Burritos with peanut sauce, Pesto burritos with pesto sauce spinage ect... Oriental burritos, curry burritos. Vegetarian burritos, fish tacos... Just to name a few. They use all fresh quality ingredients with no lard or grease.

The owners and staff have always been exceptionally friendly. One of the owner's even used to bring out special dishes out for me to try, that they don't serve usually, and  they were unbelievably delicious.

I got my usual order of the Thai wrap in a whole wheat tortilla, black beans,no rice, salsa fresca and chicken which is  served with a side of tortilla chips and salsa. My burrito was good, not as flavorful as I remember, I think it could have used a little more peanut sauce but other than that burrito texture was chewy and tasty, black beans great , salsa fresca was incredibly fresh and full of flavor.

Service is still extremely friendly. It was early and I was the only one there so they were especially attentative ,took time to bring me my food with big sincere smiles and ask if I needed anything

Overall food was not phenomenal, but definitely fresh and satisfying .They are a little pricey and I do believe have raised there prices over the last year. Other than that, the service was - as always above and beyond exceptional, something rare in these little places...

I'm told that in the beginning god created the heavens and the earth. And for 6 more days god created a bunch of other pretty important stuff.  And between then and now some other things happened.

But frankly, I haven't been too impressed with much of god's handywork lately until discovering La Cascada's eggplant salsa.

Oh my, god...if you DID inspire this stuff you DESERVE all that praise you are getting.  If someone told me that you are working through the owner and he is your instrument on earth, then, yeah, i might trust in you and all your holy goodness.

Because EGGPLANT SALSA has made a freaking BELIEVER out of me!!!!! PRAISE JESUS, MOHAMMED, AND YOUR OTHER PROPHET MOHAMMED (i think that's the owner of La Cascada's name)

I cannot get enough of this stuff.  I'm working a 1/2 a tub a day habit! I'll eat it on pretty much anything - eggs, toast, lentils, beans, cucumber slices...OMG it's AMAZING on cucumber slices!!!  It combines all that is good and holy about Mexican and Mediterranean food.  Smoky, tangy, sweet, salty...I may not speak in tongues, but my tongue wants to speak...It is thicker than regular salsa so you can spread it, dip it, use it as a filling. I can't say enough about it.

But OH (and this is how I know there are powerful forces of good at work here) it has 15 CALORIES PER SERVING!!!! Even half a tub at a time is only about 150.  Thank you god, thank you thank you thank you.

You can buy your own tub (do NOT expect to share mine) at the College location or at various chi-chi stores around town. I'm getting my fix at Elephant Pharm these days because for some silly reason they don't sell it at the DT Berkeley La Cascada which is a block away from my office. But the nice man there said he thought they might start.  If I am a good girl and I pray very hard, will it happen?

oh - if you are expecting a review of burritos go elsewhere. i care not for burritos.

    Okay, seriously...WTF.

I should've trusted my gut instinct and gone to Gordo's a couple of doors down.  Instead, I wandered in here...lured in by the cozier atmosphere (Gordo's is pretty bare bones).  Honestly, the atmosphere was cool.  Complete with a walk-up order counter, open kitchen (so you can see them making your food fresh, supposedly), and awesome mural spanning the entire wall of the restaurant designed to look and feel like the courtyard/patio of a Mexican Hacienda.

I had a hard time choosing what to eat, and so I got down on my knees and prayed to the lord almighty for a sign that might help me choose a worthy meal.  I arose and lo!  There before my eyes, on the opposite wall of the mural is the biggest banner I've ever seen inside of a restaurant.  It reads in big bold red letters: "VOTED BEST BURRITO IN THE EAST BAY".

OH REALLY, FOOL!  Voted best by whom!?  Your employees?  The restaurant owner!?  The society of upper-class white yuppie hipsters?

My burrito was absolutely -terrible-!  Who cares if it was the size of my head...a big pile of crap the size of my head that's called a burrito is still a big pile of crap.  And that's what my food may as well have been.  The burrito was bursting at the seams with flavorless dried up gristly chicken, poorly wrapped, and they used some kind of cheap powder-mix tasting guac (which I had to pay extra for).  Top that off with the fact that some of the beans in the burrito were undercooked.  I dissected it with a fork and managed to salvage a few pieces of food, but it was a lost cause.  I had hoped to dig out some food with my chips, but EVEN THE CHIPS SUCKED.  They tasted like straight from a bag Tostitos. After a few more minutes of fruitless attempts to fill up here, I wandered out dissatisfied, hungry, and most of all, cheated.

ALSO: No Mexican coke.  Shame on you guys.  You can buy it in bulk at Costco now, so there is NO excuse.

I really wanted to rip that lousy "best burrito" banner down on my way out the door and burn it on the sidewalk out front.  Thanks a lot.  Guess I'll go to Gordo's next time.  I gave back a star because of the kickass mural.  That's about all that's going for the place.

First, let me alert you to my bias: I am born and raised Los Angeles. My primary food group is "burrito." Visiting the bay area, all of my friends say "oh man! watch out! there's no good mexican food up there!" I was a little worried, but not frantic.

La Cascada is good mexican food. They do have the "best burrito in Berkeley" sign up, and sure it's from years ago, but that's okay. My boyfriend and I were visiting friends in the area and the Cal campus- on our way out we decided to stop for some breakfast. Seeing "BREAKFAST BURRITO" on the window, we were sold.

I liked mine better than his. They had a green salsa that was...fizzy. Fizzy salsa is not something we had ever experienced before. The soyrizo my boyfriend had made him sick to his stomach about half way through the burrito, but I'm not sure I want to pin that completely on the food. (We had "road trip belly"- pretty messed up, haha.) They were both pretty bland, but not the worst thing we've ever eaten. We really loved their chips, too!

The employees inside were great! NICE and efficient and suuuuper fast. For that, 3 stars.

And, if I lived over there, I'd probably go in again.

Eh. For a while I didn't make the connection that the La Cascada down on Center/Oxford/Shattuck and this one were really the same. I actually like the one in downtown Berkeley more. They had a pretty good carnitas burrito in that location.

However, the college location isn't as good in my opinion. Its hard to describe, but the burrito tasted "flat". It didn't have the distinct feeling of multiple ingredients working together per bite to make a delicious combination of flavor. I can't really narrow it down, but if I had to make a guess, I would say that the carnitas weren't nearly as flavorful as they needed to be to bring the burrito alive.

Instead of coming to here, you would be better served visiting Gordo's a couple of stores down. They have good prices and their carnitas burrito is consistently delicious.

Right before entering Gordo for the bajillionth time to eat a greasilla, a woman stopped me and the notorious Nick H. and recommended La Cascada, saying it was much better.  We're down to listen to the homies so we decided to give it a shot.

Completely empty when we arrived, there was a speckling of other patrons by the time we left.  The inside is tastefully muralized to look like a hacienda in Mexico or Argentina or something.

We ordered a chile relleno and a fish taco to share, the bill was something like $17.  Both were pretty good, not unbelievable, but better than the Berkeley average.  Well, the fish taco did feature mango salsa, so that's a whole star right there.  But I've had it up to here with so-called Mexican restaurants only serving tacos and burritos.  Maybe I WANT some chile rellenos or a tamale or a fish taco.  In fact, these items are my favorites and if you don't carry them I am angry with you.

There, I've said it.  Burrito shops can kiss my wannabe Mexican culata.

I didn't visit this location, but instead their booth at a Farmer's Market.

Ordered the Picante Burrito, and my dude, the Curry Vegetarian. Both burritos were about the size of my lower arm.

Did not finish it all at once, but was able to devour it slowly throughout the day. Yes, it was that good. I'm not a very big girl or anything - I'm not used to those kind of food portions. But dammit that burrito was pretty awesome.

The Curry one was okay, but I liked mine best. And he liked his best. Yeauhh.

Price was reasonable, I think like $6.50.

La Cascada's juicy steak burrito makes Chipotle's taste like dried-dog-shit-in-a-wrap. I'll admit, the platter next to the cashier is a smart move on their part to woo customers in to make obligated purchases, but who doesn't love free samples?!

One thing though, customers are limited to two tiny cups of salsa, which is definitely not enough for the burrito and the chips (which, btw, come with your order). Then again, the salsa's self-serve so...

Carnitas seemed to be the only good thing on the menu. It was good! But not the best. I dislike how the carnitas wasn't shredded enough. It made it difficult to eat daintily. It served as 2 meals though so yays.

The promotion "50% off Burritos today only" totally worked on me. I wouldn't have bothered to step in here otherwise. And I won't return here unless prompted to by another promotion. Only had to pay $3.50 for a burrito...two meals for $3.50!? It was awesome.

Go here if you're hungry and on your way to BART. This place is not a "destination" just a place to go to if convenient.

That was a big damn quesadilla.  I mean, it was huge.  My co-worker took me here for dinner here and I swear, I didn't know how she was going to finish it (she ended up bringing a generous half home).

As for me, my tostada salad was tasty.  I ended up bringing leftovers for the bf.  I almost didn't...it was really good and I was hungry, and I found myself plowing throw it with great ease.

Good prices.  I'd go back if I in the neighborhood.

ps. I found the horchata a bit on the thick side - if you like it more watery, get lots of ice.

A friend of mine brought me here for an early supper, after having booked them to cater a few of her work events.

The food was nothing short of spectacular. I wasn't expecting to have the opportunity to be adventurous, so my initial order was a chicken burrito. All the flavors were spot-on and more than I had anticipated. The chicken was tender and juicy and savory, the pico de gallo was fresh and added great texture to the filling.

The manager, however, managed to talk us into trying his new quinoa salad, and that was the true star of the show. Red quinoa nicely tricked out with spices, nuts, raisins, peas, carrots, caramelized onions and cooked in pomegranate and orange juices. A marvelous bouquet of tastes!

Very very impressive. I am an immediate fan.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good this place was! Had to grab a quick dinner so my friends and I stopped here.

The place was pretty empty, but I'm not sure why! It's a really cute and very clean place. The cashier was very nice and service was quick. I ordered a Seafood Burrito with prawns and it was delicious! I was surprised at how big the prawns were inside - I was half expecting the small shrimp meat that usually comes with shrimp burritos at other Mexican places. The shrimp was really big, plump and tasty and it also came with a tasty corn/tomatillo salsa.

Overall, great burrito! It cost about $8, which I think is a decent price for a good (and filling) shrimp burrito. And it came with chips and salsa too.

Would definitely come here again! :)

So much better than Cancun. They just lowered their prices too! It's 4.99 for most of the burritos. But it seems like they raised the prices on the wraps up to 7.99, so the lesson is get a burrito and not a wrap. I especially like the vegetarian burrito. It's so delicious and will definitely fill you up.

The fish tacos are tasty (we had them a while back) but I really can't justify eating salmon, even "wild salmon", or any fish, for that matter, at this point. What a convoluted sentence. I meant to say, don't eat fish and get the veggie burrito instead. The two workers here are very coordinated and if you come on Sunday afternoons you can always see one guy making chile rellenos. I haven't tried them yet, but I definitely want to one day, maybe after a big hike!

The decor in this place is also great and the location is nice.

Yelp actually led me to a mexican spot several  doors down, but the line was out the door. Still feeling like mexican, I decided to give this place a shot. Upon entering I noticed a huge banner on the wall stating they had been voted best burrito in the bay for several years. I believe it was 05,06,07. Something like that, wouldn't you rather want that hanging in the window?

Anyhow... I ordered a my burrito with carnitas and a cheese quesadilla for the little guy. Prices were a lot higher that the place down the street which makes me wonder if that's why everyone was down there. I paid about $13 for the everything including a fountain soda. Wanted to try their tacos, but it was $3 each. WOWSERS!

If I'm in the area again, I'll probably give the place down the street a shot. Food here was decent, but pricey!

Not really comparable to Gordos. Under no circumstance consider ordering a non-buritto here. Their meets just can't hold up without support, and their plates have some... um.. bizarre flavor choices. I ordered the enchilada here and it tasted like someone dumped a tub of sweet n low into the sauce.

The fish burritos aren't that bad, and are the sole thing keeping me from giving them the 1-star treatment.

Great tasty burritos. I ordered the standard chicken burrito, (but sans cheese to keep just some of the fat off), black beans.

Yummy yummy yummy.  The salsa they put in was very flavorful, not overpowering, nor that spicy but an excellent complement to the meat and black beans and rice inside. The flour tortilla was warm and hey.. what's this??  a bit flakey (in a good way) too!  I'll definitely be back!

My wife ordered the curry chicken wrap.  mildly spiced for this Chinese palate, and worth ordering again.

The horchata (rice drink) was good as well. service was fast and personable.  The green sauce is very good, and the chips, oh my.. excellent.

I guess the East Bay Express was right.. This is certainly one of the better burrito spots in the East Bay.   In my book this beats out Gordos (for burritos), and Hi-Tech Burrito (if any are still around..).

Gordos still is better for tacos, but that's another review..

Another Yelp letdown. This was a highly rated restaurant on the website, so I pestered my friends to join me on my adventure to La Cascada, however, the experience was less than amazing.

It was freezing cold on our trip there, so we were nice and hungry. I ordered an original burrito, which I thought was good, but not excellent or anything. The mix of novel ingredients, such as squash was interesting, though. It was also neat that it was in a spinach tortilla. One of my friends ordered a fajita plate, but received a fajita wrap instead, which she liked. My other friend got enchiladas, I believe, but she didn't like it much.

Overall, the experience was alright, but underwhelming. The order mixup was a bit odd, too. Service was OK, but nothing to rave about. I'd have liked more chips. Hmmm, now that I think about it, maybe I was just in a bad mood =(

We went to Ici after, which was definitely the highlight of the evening.

I love the nachos!  I get it vegetarian these days, but that doesn't take away from the fact that nachos are a shared affair here. I can never eat the whole thing by myself, so I usually split it with a friend. The salsas are great. I always load up on all the varieties to have with my nachos.

They also sell tubs of their salsa at Berkeley Bowl and the Whole Foods in Berkeley. The eggplant salsa is incredible. I'm addicted.

We went to La Cascada with high hopes of having a great, greasy Mexican meal before going to see a movie across the street.  Sure, we got there 10 minutes before closing...but we figured we'd order simple, scarf, and bail.

As it was finally our turn in line, the lady at the register gave us a hasty "Whaddaya want?" and then proceeded to go fill someone's drink. I'm ok with asking us to be concise, but asking and then turning away?

We then ordered and she asked if we wanted that to go.  We asked if we could eat in (which seems reasonable, seeing as she was implying a choice).  She explained that they were closing in 5 minutes (which was 5 minutes before their official closing time).  We accepted it to go.

She had ordered a lime fresca, and the cash register lady (quickly becoming our nemesis) said "oh, let me get you that horchata".  Horchata is a milky Mexican drink, not a lime juice.  However, this women apparently didn't know the difference (even though they serve both) and proceeded to serve some lime fresca.

Her burrito arrived first.  It was rather unimpressive...dry (no sour creme) and bland.  My quesadilla was better...lots of cheese and grease and salsa and guac.  It was nowhere near the best I've had, but it was a reasonable meal.  We were quickly run out, as the bitchy woman we had dealt with was ready to go back to her crappy apartment and waste her life away being evil.

The bottom line: hit-or-miss Mexican food with crappy service.  Spend your 10 minutes here waiting in line for Ici Ice Cream instead.

For a place I frequent so . . . frequently, I would expect to have a more insightful review.  I'm here often enough that I probably qualify as a regular - at least twice a month, and often weekly.  It's always burritos - chicken, beef, chile relleno - and they're always good.  But they never quite hit a high note for me, as an El Farolito or Cancun (SF) burrito does.

I haven't been able to pinpoint the weakness.  The beans and tortillas are fine, so that's not it.  It's either the salsas that come in the burrito, or the meats.  The steak is a little bland - maybe that's it.  I tend to think it's the salsa - there is a tang to it that does not sit well with me.  This is surprising, because their "outboard" salsas, in the salsa bar, are terrific.  The La Cascada signature salsa is delicious, as are the various types they sell at Whole Foods.  But the ones that come automatically in the burritos aren't quite there.

They're good, and absolutely worth a try, but I find that Las Palmas down the road is closer to my idea of what a burrito should be, and I think my days as a regular are waning.  Of the places on College - Cascada, Las Palmas, Cactus, Gordo, and Burrito Shop - this is a solid number two.  Gordo is overrated, Cactus is wildly overrated, and Burrito Shop is just bad.

I'm a fan, and for my relatively small stomach, I'm a happy camper. But my (male) roommates' gustatory experiences are usually not satisfactory, especially not for the price.

I have loved everything I've eaten (the bean/rice/cheese veggie and the salmon fish tacos), but living around the corner has not been particularly healthy for my wallet, and if I go with my roommates they have to snack beforehand.

Cascada is around the corner from my apartment and the proportions are perfect for smaller folk like myself, but it's pretty easy to find a cheaper (saltier) burrito that's more filling closer to campus.

The mango salsa is pretty awesome, though.

My friend and I had planned to go eat "out somewhere" so we decided to go on a search for Mexican Food. She recommended that we go to this place on College called Gordo's. However, once we got there.... Gordo's was nowhere in sight. Feeling a bit let down, we decided to get dinner at La Cascada. Good food, plenty of seats, catchy Latin music. The food was a bit pricey for my taste but the quality and quantity of the food makes it worthwhile. !!!!The portions where massive!!!! If you get the nachos or a torpedo its best to just split it. Trust me.... there's enough for two people.

p.s. We assumed that La Cascada had, in fact, replaced Gordo's.... However, a couple of days later as I was on my way back from Safeway I looked out the window of the 51 and saw gordo's.

The burritos here aren't very good. I had one standard super burrito and it was ok to eat. The chicken wasn't very flavorful, the wrap tasted bad, and the fillings wer ok. I could finish my burrito but I certainly didn't enjoy it.

A lot of my friends loved this place, but I really just think it is normal slightly americanized mexican food. Go here for quick food to go and their fresh salsa bar is pretty tasty, but it is just average in my book. Their burritos are the way to go in my book and there is always seating open usually. For parking, park across the street in the rockridge bart station lot. It's free and easy ha

Ordered a chicken burrito, got a steak one instead. No big deal, but they didn't even ask if I wanted sour cream or guacamole or what kind of salsa, and the burrito tasted bland. Later in the day I had the worst case of Montezuma's revenge, needless to say it ruined my evening. Thanks a lot!

Tastes healthier than your traditional mexican -- baked tortilla chips instead of fried and very lean carnitas (I like my carnitas crispy and a little bit fatty).  The enchilada sauce was not as tasty as other places I've been to, but wasn't bad.  Nachos were good, but not amazing.  I'm a bigger fan of Gordo...

Maybe we caught La Cascada on an off day? The chicken fajita burrito tasted antiseptic, where the sauce had a weird soapy flavor. The salmon fish taco was decent, but nothing really to write home about. The worst were the chips. Are they not made in the restaurant? We weren't given chips right away with the meal, so assumed they didn't come with. Instead, ordered an extra batch only to discover that we had a few more baskets coming. This would have been welcome if they were freshly fried, but alas, they were some store-bought affairs.

Yay for yummy wild salmon burritos, and huge/delicious quesadillas!  I wish it were open late.  FRIENDLY service.  Horchata is not as good as their other things.

Also as par for the course in Elmwood/Rockridge, expect some raucous youngsters, whose presence may overpower this delightful little restaurant.

Tasty burrito place with lots of menu options.  Two or three doors down from Gordo's which is also tasty, but simpler.

I like to think I know my burritos pretty well, having been to burrito shacks all up and down California. They claim they're the best burrito in the east bay, but not having eaten any other burrito there, I can't support or refute that claim. I do know that they're carnitas burrito is mighty f*cking tasty though. Look for their little mini stand at the Lake Merritt farmer's market too.
