I used to go to this place at least once a month for lunch cause their specials were just out of this world ... entree, rice, beans AND a beer for $3.99 - I mean come on, who does this?!?
Whether it's a chicken or beef or pork entree or even the mofongo itself, I've mostly had great tasting meals here for a ridiculously low price.
If you're up in the Heights, check it out.
This place is nice if you are in the neighborhood.
It's huge with beautiful stairs leading to the second floor. There are tons of artwork hung on the walls. It's also got a bar which gets packed very quickly at night .
I have been there many times and they defiantly have the best mofongo that I have ever ate. It was perfectly seasoned and purely delicious. It was presented lovely as well. [I make sure it is presented infront of me everytime I dine there :] I also liked their ox tail dish. I did not know what it was at first and my friend told me it was ox tail after and I freaked out. But hey, when I actually ate it, it was delicious.
For dessert, I have only tried their Tres Leche. It was decent but I had better. The portion was perfect for the main course but I felt like they could have given me more cake! I guess they were trying to help my figure.
The only problem with this restaurant was that food takes forever to come. One time I drank 3 pina coloda's while waiting.
Overall, this place is good. You can get a very delicious meal in about 25 dollars.
I first learned about mofongo when I became obsessed with green plantains and my Dominican friend told me to try it out. Unfortunately, it was years later when I actually ate mofongo-the first time was at Marisco Centro up the block from casa del mofongo.
So I ate here yesterday with my friend. It was a Tuesday and pretty crowded. Music is loud and the lights are dim, I saw families, dates and singles eating. And the Food? Talk about an extensive menu! So many mofongs to choose from as well as other Dominican items.
We asked for a drink menu and the waiter said there is none and that they can make any drink. I ordered a pina colada and my friend got a long island iced tea. We ordered mofongo con chicarron and de penil to split. The mofongo itself is kinda dry but it comes with this amazing garlic sauce that you can pour all over it. The mofongo has bits of pork in it and if you cannot eat pork you must tell the waiter when you order. The pernil and chicharron was on the side of the plate-generous hunks I must say that are perfect. Chicharron was nice and crispy and pernil was nice and juicy. I was unable to finish my dish and mofongo is not a good dish to doggie bag because each time you reheat it, it dries out.
I can't wait to come back and order more mofongo and try mangu! Mmmm!!!!
I love this place. Great take out, nice people, nice atmosphere for dining in, giant portions. The whole grilled chicken is very tasty, and only $8.17 with rice and beans. The stewed oxtail also rocks, same price. They seem to be open pretty late too, and the kitchen just keeps going.
Well while watching the Dominican Channel they announce this amazing culture filled restaurant. So the next time I was in the area,I just had to come check it out. There is just something about that giantic pilon in front of the restaurant that captures you.
This is the type of place that reminds you of you're culture or when you're too far from home.
My only regret was coming here and not ordering some mofongo, that's like going to a red lobster and not ordering seafood. It just feels plain wrong.Instead ,I ordered chicharones de pollo y arroz. But I promise you that I will return and I am dying to taste a mofongo de longaniza.
Unlike the other reviews,I came here on a wednesday afternoon so there wasnt any loud music or louds crowds. It was a pretty calm and pleasant experience, not only for dominicans but for anyone of any culture.Come and expand your hispanic taste buds. You'll love our dominican flavor!!!!!!!!
Everything I've tried here has been very good. My bf is Dominican and loved it, but complained it was too loud! Yes, it is a very loud atmosphere with music, but it's fun.
I'm going to have to say Tipico in Washington Heights is better. The mofongo there is more moist and the sauce is more flavorful. Not to mention, Tipico is much cheaper.

LOVE ME SOME MOFONGO!!!!...The give huge portions and the place is fun. Don't go if you are looking… Read more »
I love this place. I always have the mofongo and there's only been one time when I didn't like it.
In the evening expect the music to be loud and every single television to be on a sporting event.
Later in the evening expect the music to be LOUDER and every single TV still tuned into some sport recap.
In the afternoon for lunch? The music is turned down, but there's still sports.
The service is kinda slow so if you're in a rush, forget it, but it's a nice addition to Guashington Heights... mang.
So I'm not into mofongo at aaall- so why check out this establishment? Ye ask....'cause my brother loooves mofongo & I had to oblige.
He & his date said the mofongo was 'aaaight'.
I ordered the carne guisada with rice & beans (my fav latin dish to order at any 'spanish' food place) & my b/f ordered the chicharron de pollo.
My food wasn't bad, I've had better- portions were decent. The b/f said his food was good & he was full at the end of it all (which says a lot, 'cause he has a 'hearty' appetite, to say the least).
I found the place to be a little too loud (read: volume fit for a club) for a place where you go to have dinner & possibly, maaaybe want to have a convo with your group- but hey, it's the Heights- what do you expect? It's always party time everywhere & anywhere around there, no matter what's going on.
$80 total w/tip for 4 people w/alcohol included, not bad at all for a 1st time visit to try out the joint.
Would I go back? Probably not- I know I can get the same exact order for almost 1/2 the price somewhere else.
I've been here twice. On weekend nights its packed to a point that severely hinders service. I also went during a week night and the service was better and faster. Other than the mofongos, the menu lacks variety. The ambiance is nice, and the prices are indicative of this (when compared to other restaurants in the area).
LCDM... ook i found out about this place thru a commercial in " Supercanal caribe" hehe a dominican channel. So since my dear mom is a fan of mofongo i decided to take her here, for Dominican mothers day! Not to mention the ride on a Saturday night from Brooklyn to the heightz and my moms slow pace walking. Cuz like a good latina she walks moving her hips side to side. In this case causing some delays in her steps lol. So it took cuz about and hr and a half do to the changes in the subways. Anyhow when we got there the music was great... the decor nicer than average. and well we got seated next 2 the bar... and where the music seems to be the loudest. which meant scream ur lungs out or learn some sign language. Anyhow the service was nice and fast. WE both had pork mofongo with shrimps in red sauce. IT WAS DELISHH!! Must go back but not on a weekend is a bit 2 much for me!
**Ohh and the restaurant has 2 levels... the bathroom is a bit small but clean... The place is huge and even though there were a lot of people still didnt seem crowded... tables are a good distance away from each other which is good!! Many friends that have gone to LCDM always give it 2 thumps up!! :-)
ive never eaten in there. i just go in to get rice beans and a whole chicken for only $8.13 now thats wassup (before it used to only be $6 until the word got out) . ive done that about 6 times but the last time they gave me a dry ass chicken! the whole damn this was dry!
-1 star! dry chicken
-1star my sister said the waiters are usually bitter and rude
other than that it always looks poppin and busy inside happy faces
So after my sister was raving about having mofongo every day in Puerto Rico, I decided it was my mission to find some during my stay in NYC. Luckily, my cousin's bf lived in Washington Heights and knew of a place down the street. I ordered the monfongo w/beef. My cousin had mofongo w/chicken and her bf had it with pork. The beef was okay but a bit too chewy. I liked the pork better and the chicken was flavorful. I had nothing to compare the mofongo, but if you ask me, it was rather a bit dry. Also, it was rather too loud to have a conversation, but they had the Lakers vs Nuggets game on which was a plus. I ordered "una mas para llevar" so that I can bring some home to my sister but the waiter did not place my order.
La Casa De el Mofongo, The first in NYC, guachinton Jeits area..Well well, i got pictures with the big pilon (the thing to mash the plantains) outside the place.
The Place: Always crowded and looks disorganized but its not. Lots of workers (were is the resection) moving about their business. Decor is good, based on Dominican history and folklore.
The Food: Great food but sometimes slow service. The place is always packed and i can see why it might take a while, but sometimes they over do it. Mofongos (mashed plantains with garlic, pepper and oil formed into a ball with whatever you want inside). I personally ordered the shrimp and it was delicious. Been there like 4 times and the food is always good.
Drinks: have you ever had a presidente beer with a wedding dress Vestida de novia like in DR). AHHHHHH you have to come here, at least when i got it it was all dressed in white and you could drink it from one shot...Bar is open until 4am and they do karaoke some nights.
The bad, no coat check for winter days and no parking.....
Jesus santisimo! You guys are missing out on one the best places to get your Mofongo on! If you don't know what Mofongo is here's a concise definition. It's a traditional Dominican dish (also popular in Puerto Rico) of fried mashed plantains, pork, and garlic. It's usually round, hard on the outside and soft on the inside.
First let me give you the one big selling point. The kitchen is open 24/7! That's right! And the bar closes at 4AM. The place is located near the main artery of Washington Heights (181st Street) on St. Nick Ave. The retaurant itself is beautiful. As a dominican-american I was wowed by the beautiful mix of artwork, among them Taino paintings and period pieces. They had this really cool portrait with all the Dominican presidents as well as the founding fathers of Dominican Independence. The bar area is to the right when you walk in. You've got some flat screens scattered about which is a godsend for all the Baseball-philes that frequent the spot. There's plenty of seating as well.
In terms of food you get to choose from like 15 different ingredients to add to your mofongo. Honestly, I had a hard time deciding. It's a long list. You just don't know what to pick. I mean you have shrimp, longaniza (sausage), salami, cheese, chicken, steak...all inside the mofongo. It's all tasty! They give sauce on the side to keep the mashed plantains from drying up which keeps your mofongo moist. Nothing fancy...more like a gravy or stew than a sauce. It's served to you in one of those old-school wooden garlic presses that looks like a goblet. You can add a side or salad to it if you wish. And make sure you wash it down with a cold Presidente!. God, those tasty, chilled Presidentes! There is just no substitute!
They also have other meals typical of Dominican restaurants including peppered and rib-eye steak, rice and beans, yucca, lobster, etc. The prices are comfortable. The decor is perfect. The bar is always fun! Plus they've got nightly salsa, merengue, and bachata!
Ok, I can understand where the gripes are coming from on slow service, but I think Casa de Mofongo is a great go-to choice for tasty and reasonable food in a fun atmosphere. The decor is nicer than average. The bar is always hoppin' and the music is great. If you're not in a rush, and want to hang out with friends, grab a bite and/or have a few drinks this is a great place.
Also, personally, I really like the mofongo here. It's never dried out, as it can be in many places. There is a wide variety of topping choices, and lots more to offer on the menu for those who aren't fans of mofongo. I got mofongo con arenque (herring) this evening and it was delicious, but I did already have a craving for arenque. My BF went more traditional and had the chicharron. Also good, though heavy of course. We all had a couple of Presidentes as the perfect compliment to a good meal.
I may have kind of simple tastes, but really what more do you need?
I have to tell you a little story of my visit here.
I'm Peruvian and my fiance is Dominican. I'm somewhat hooked on Dominican food.
We were referred to LCDM by a friend.
I was craving Mofongo.....My fiance had mentioned to me that they only serve Mofongo in the morning. I was so upset to hear this.
I went ahead and entered the Restaurants' to-go area and order some pernil with moro. I waved a lady down and asked "Do you make Mofongo at this time (5pm)?" she replied, "pero mija, si esta es LA CASA DE MOFONGO!",,,,,, WAS I AN AIRHEAD!?! LOL!
Any-who- I must admit that the food (to-go) was good... They gave us a HUGE portion.
I'm heading out there tonight with my air-headed fiance ( that I LOVE SO MUCH), for dinner and will be ordering Mofongo... ;o)
This place in AWSOME!!.. im dominican my self i i just love being around my people. and not only that the service it great and faster than most resturant. I went when i was pregnant. luckuly i went at night time around 11:30ish and the music was blasting.... and the place was so nice i just got up and stared to dance ... (& i was an angry pregnant women through most my pregnancy) that place is the best... i go almost every week with my friends and husband! i love it!!
Disclaimer: Through Yelp previous reviews I learned what I was in for before coming to this place.
I give it a five because I avoided all of the cons people talk about in their reviews. Some stated that the mofongo wasn't their forte, well I gave them the benefit of the doubt and decided to try it, keeping a safety net of course I order the plain one, accompanied with half chicken (gloriously tasting chicken) and avocado salad. Everything was delicious, the service ... well I had had better but it was good. I took my best friend with me we both ate a lot the bill was surprisingly $18 which was probably half of what the actual order was worth (what can I say nothing like being a LADY, if you know what I mean).
After dinner we headed to the bar area, it was CROWED! Great drinks, Lots of attention (got to love Dominican men). Also great music but not enough space to enjoy it. NO COAT CHECK AT THE BAR, OMG... I could do without not being able to move among people as long as I don't have to hold my coat in my hands because leaving it on is out of the question. So if you are not a lady, when you go to the bar area make arrangements to have a table, not that you need to seat it's so you have a place where to put your jacket, (ladies you don't need to worry about this guys will wrestle so you take their seat.)
Over all the place was great, food is delicious and the bar has a phenomenal atmosphere.
reluctant at first considering it is in the heights...lol no offense!
but surprisingly i was kinda impressed, cute ambiance, walking in at 4am still alil tipsy after a night out with the girls, my friend who lives in the heights suggested it...so we went, we had mangu...didnt get to try the mofongo, but i really did like it, idk if its cuz u like anything at that time of the hr or what...but i did enjoy, i will def come back try some other dishes.
1 dislike, is the crowd of young guys 'chillin' outside, thats kinda annoying...
Heard good things from the reviews of this place and some folks, i hear, loves Mofongo. Have to say... I'm not a big fan. My Mofongo Con Longaniza (longaniza mofongo) was over cooked. Just didn't hit the spot for me. And with my native diet (Filipino), you'd think I'd love the grease. But sadly, I was disappointed. The atmosphere of the place seems pretty cool... very local, very community-like. Just not going back for the food.
La Casa Del Mofongo is one of the many new places coming to the heights. I was actually headed to one of the other restaurants but could not find parking anywhere. On my way back home I came across this place. It seemed nice inside and had a nice size Professional Latin crowd. It took a while to get a seat but that's not their fault. But the hour wait for the food was their fault. My Fiance would agree with a previous post regarding the Mofongo not being all that, they did name the place mofongo it should be good. But everything else I ordered was very good. the Starters we ordered as well as my steak was great.
food is inconsistent, sometimes good sometimes horrible. i think they change the cook more often than the toilet paper. if your looking for a loud n busy spot this is the place to be. dont come around 4am if your sober, youll want to pull your hair out. great decor for the neighborhood tho. oh and dont expect the staff to speak too much english.
It took them forever to bring us our order. No, I didn't get mofongo [don't ask me why]. My food was really good though. I just hated to wait for so long.
